This is a well written and enjoyable memoir of a family that moved lock, stock, and barrel from the Eastern US (Washington DC area) to Montana. Nancy Quinn tells the story in sweet anecdotes and in a journal keeping form. It was lovely to see a family removed from their former creature comforts and start life in the mountain, the cold and the wildlife.

Once you have read this book, you realize that you can admire the pioneer spirit of this family. Their willingness to learn how to handle every n

Engaging chronicle of a family retiring from military life to move to rural Montana and brave the extreme weather and live a "Mountain life". This is a wonderful recounting, humorous and warm, filled with antedotes of the challenges and hardships, yet peppered with heartwarming stories of adapting to the new environment. Nancy Quinn writes her stories as if you are sitting together and with a clever voice she draws a clear picture of everyday life. This is real life, not legendary, but the rich ...more

I have not read many memoirs but was recommended this book, so I thought I would give it a go. I was so glad that I did.
Living in the city I have always envied people who live in the country and all the open space they have. This book tells the author’s story from city to country girl and the daily struggle she had to go through to make her house her home. From building her home to scaring cougars, this story had all the excitement of a fictional adventure story. There was never a dull passage i

I loved this book, the adventers of Nancy Quinn moving to Montana with her husband and two girls. From things that go bump in the dark to seeing cows and other beautiful animals visiting once in awhile.
Very Adventurous. Funny in parts and in sometimes we wondering if I could have done what Nancy and her family has done. Bravo Nancy Quinn your book was marvelous and a great read for all

Living in the west is a wildlife artist and authors dream. I felt compelled to share the adventures my family encountered residing on a rural mountainside, after we left the comfort and convenience of our life in the nations capitol. The events are true, though names, dates, and some locations were intentionally blurred for privacy reason. There is a message which is reflected in the cover photo of the rainbow, which I think represents hope. This is a recurring theme throughout the book, along w ...more

Nancy Quinn has an easy to read, almost conversational, anecdotal style of writing that makes it seem as if you are sitting down with her over a cup of coffee, listening to the latest adventures of her family, dogs, horses, or the numerous animal visitors that frequent their mountain property. Written with warmth and humor, you will find yourself moving effortlessly from chapter to chapter as Nancy, her husband, Bill, and their two daughters face one new challenge and adventure after another; an ...more
