I’ve had mixed results with Bridget Essex’s novels, especially her books on knights from another world. I rated “Knight to Remember” and it’s sequel “Date Knight” 3* each – meh. But I enjoyed a couple of her werewolf books very much, giving one 4* and another 5*. So…having discovered “A Dark and Stormy Knight” was released on Audible two weeks ago, and with the Kindle version being part of Kindle Unlimited and therefore the Audible book is only $1.99…I went back to Essex’s world(s) of Knights.
Wow. So very glad I did!
This is the best book by Essex I’ve read (she’s prolific and I haven’t yet read them all….but now I think I will)!
The character of Charaxus from “Date Knight” returns and is given her own story, along with her earthly soul-mate Mara. The first two knight books felt very YA (especially the first one). I felt like I was reading the diary of a 16yo who desperately was dreaming of a life of love and adventure, but really was too young to understand love and who had an adolescent’s simplistic view of adventure.
In this book, the MCs are adults. We learn the backstories for Mara and Charaxus, and we are horrified by how families can treat their children, and how friends can betray. If you’ve read any of Essex’s blog writings, you’ll suspect that much of Mara’s story is based upon her own sufferings. In the author’s note at the end of the book she confirms this.
The book did annoy me greatly during the “but we have to break up because I’m not ready to commit to love and might get hurt” scene, but it’s the only weakness in an otherwise fantastic book. There are a couple of delicious steamy scenes, but the book is really a love story. Not just love between the MCs, but allowing oneself to let go of past pains and regrets….to accept and love yourself. Only then can you fully love another.
The MCs in “A Dark and Stormy Knight” are far more developed than were Holly and Virago, the author’s writing is far more…mature?...expressive?....certainly wonderful, and the narrator….OMG OMG….Maria Marquis is the perfect voice for this story, and is far superior to the narrator of the first two knight books!
This is actually the second book Maria Marquis has narrated for Bridget Essex…and I REALLY hope this won’t be the last!
Highly recommended and I’ll enjoy relistening to this book: 5*!

When there was action and the plot actually moved forward, it was great. Terrific premise, but way too much repetition and internal dialog. This could have been 5 stars if tightened up a bit ... or a lot.

5 Stars! 4 stars for the book + 1 star for the narrator, Maria Marquis.
This is the first book I've read by Essex. Well, second. I started reading Under Her Spell, which is a prequel to her Knights series, but I got bored and DNF. I may go back.
This is an entertaining, romantic, action packed story with very likeable MCs - Mara, an artist living in Buffalo and Charaxus, a Knight from another world as well as the cast of secondary characters including Mara's huge, great dog. You can tell this was a very personal story for the author (even without reading the author's note at the end. Which BTW was included in the audible book). At one point I had to stop listening to the book - it was so heartbreaking to listen to Mara recalling her youth that I finished the chapter on my own. This made this modern day variation of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" more than just a romantic fantasy.
The narrator certainly added to my enjoyment of the book. She really doesn't just read, but acts however not over acts. At the beginning, you can almost hear her amusement in her voice as Mara describes her eclectic friends/neighbors.
My favorite character? Cecile. I can't decide - whether I want to be like her or to be her friend.

Holy moly! This was insane stunning.
As the story progressed my heart was breaking and I cried with them, for them. I growled, I screamed and I could feel the adrenaline rush. This was insane but it felt as if everything happened to me. The two damaged heroines are amazing, strong, compassionate and resilient. They capture my heart from the start. When all is on the line, will their bond, their love survive a raging storm that surrounded them or will everything remains a dream? It's a very gripping love story. All the actions vividly portrayed, the characters well developed, the descriptions are excellent done and the story line is powerful. The author has her own uniqueness and talent to keep her readers spellbound. She is the master of this genre. I was entranced by this story and it kept me away from all the daily troubles for hours. This is a must read and not only for the lovers of this genre.

Book 4 in the series. It works stand alone, but does have a character from a previous book, but we get to know her so well in this one.
Charaxus is from the knight world of Agrotera, she ends up in Buffalo USA after events of book 3. Meeting painter artist Mara.
Both women have dreamed of eachother since they we're children. They both have damaged souls from their dysfunctional families and have suffered abuse and loneliness.
This one really hit a close note to home for me, and would anyone who has felt the sting of rejection, abuse and betrayal from family, friends, and communities that we trusted who were meant to protect us, and failed. Only to blame us for that, too.
The authors note at the end was especially poiniant, and raw. Plus her words of encouragement to us who have been broken but still manage to be courageous in our own ways.

I always find it interesting how a book can inspire strong feelings in people. I definitely had some strong feelings concerning Mara's parents... disgust being the top one. People who treat their own children like that, are simply pathetic, and I feel very sorry that anyone ever has to deal with a parent like that.
This was a great book. I absolutely love Bridget's knight series, I've read them all, loved them all, and this continues here. Charaxus was a very interesting character. I could never decide exactly how I felt about her in the last book. She seemed very complex, and this books further proves that she is. Behind that hard exterior is a lot of compassion and love. I would say she's my favorite, but it started with Virago, and I just can't move past her... but Charaxus is close. I like her personality a lot and she wears black, that's always a plus!
I hope to hear more about Mara and Charaxus in future books!

A fantastic book with a heart wrenching story
This books is absolutely phenomenal and the story is so sad, you just want to reach through the pages and hug the characters.
Everyone deserves to find that one person that loves them but what if you have only met that person in your dreams. That's what has happened for Mara, she has endured a childhood that no one should and the only thing that makes her feel better is knowing that she will find love in her dream, the same dream she has had her entire life. Until her dream becomes a reality and she tries to keep her heart intact.
This book is a part of a series and doesn't need to be read in any order, but I would highly recommend reading the other knight books.
Kudos to an amazing author on a job well done!!

Good book
I liKed this book. I like that we finally got a story on the cold, aloof Charaxus where we learn her history. I always knew there would be a good, well bad, backstory.

The author have the ideas and they're good but her writing style doesn't connect with me
I gave this book four stars for the plot it's good, solid but the Author in my opinion doesn't bring it across. She continuously repeats herself chapter after chapter I want developments, I want the mush and the angst but stop repeating the character name five times per paragraph, stop repeating they've been hurt we know move on from there.
Chara is supposed to be a bad ass Queens knight yet you've barely had her face off against anyone you could've dived into that plot, Mara could've went to her world even just to help, what became of the parents? What happened when Chara went back? How did she get back to Mara? There is so much left unsaid with your writing and it's absolutely annoying. So despite having the plots I could've thoroughly enjoyed I doubt I'll be buying anymore of your books which is disappointing because I would've enjoyed them having written better

Charaxus of Arktos by way of Furo ends up in Brooklyn; found by Mara. I do believe I'd enjoyed the book better if all of the emotional angst were dialogue between characters. That's just me. The mental back "should I or shouldn't I" was draining. I wanted, no needed, Charaxus & Mara to speak their truths and love to each other instead of reading what may or may not have transpired at faces I couldn't see.
Did Charaxus go home & what was the outcome? And, based on the other books about knights traveling through portals, I didn't understand why it took Charaxus months to return (in her amour).
When it's all said and done, I enjoyed the secondary characters because their dialogue described them.
If you like reading about women knights, read this book.

I have almost stopped wondering why I enjoy this series and just started to enjoy it. Knights are not usually my thing: the whole idea made me roll my eyes a bit when an earlier book in this series was selected by a book club I'm part of for their monthly selection. But… these have become some of my most enjoyed books lately. The depth of the love Bridget Essex shows in these books feels so real and deep to me. And… she manages to combine the mundane, everyday world with the world of these knights and their magic (and the separations of being from different worlds) into compelling, loving, and ultimately joyful books. The only sad thing for me about finishing this book is that it puts me one book closer to running out of books in this series.

If you like (sometimes cheesy) lesbian romance novels sparking with chemistry and flaunting wish fulfillment in all the best ways, this is for you. You're into fantasy? Here, have a sexy lesbian knight who'll sweep you off your feet with her smoldering eyes and dark past. You want to relate to the main character? Here, take this family-oriented artist who's also had a dark past but is working through her issues. You want it to be hot but also with lots of feelings? Oh yeah. You've got it. For me, this has the best love scene from Essex.
If you want an urban fantasy to make your world a little more magical, a little more uplifting and hopeful, read this. It's good for the soul.

Magical!
This is a very well written tale with well developed characters and an engrossing storyline. Our past influences who we are in the here and now. Sometimes, all a person has is a dream to sustain them as they face day to day life. What happens when you come face to face with that dream? What would you do to have that dream become your reality? And what if that dream challenged everything you believed? This book explores these ideas. If you believe that dreams can come true, be sure to add this book to your must-read list.

Fantastic story
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt for Charaxus in the previous book in this saga and desperately wanted to know more about her. She seemed so complex and in so much pain. I'm so glad she got her own back story. Her and mara suffered so much in their respective lives that seeing them both come together was so beautiful. They were so strong and powerful. The only downside was I wished it was longer as I loved them both and the worlds they came from. Also the after word by Bridget was equally beautiful and brought a tear to my eye.

It’s over already?
While I would have preferred more of Holly’s story, and was grumpy coming into this book as a stand-alone, the story quickly brought me out of my funk.
I love the MC and her paramour is an amazingly complicated woman who I am glad for a redemption after her seeming betrayal and death in the previous books. If I have one complaint its that the timeline is so crunched. Magic and love combined are great but I’d like to see more relationship building!

Not bad it just didn’t have any character development or anything that would make this seem more then a sketch. The writing id good but the story is to short to actually develop the way it needs to.
Lovers from different reality’s. One is a knight who doesn’t say much and the other a painter who seems braver then the knight.

Just loved this
I am so happy to get Charaxus' story after the previous stories. Holly was right about her. She is an amazing woman with a horrific past. Mara has had a similar past of abuse and hate. I felt for them both and their fateful love was breathtaking. I loved the ending as well.

Your dream becomes a reality!
What happens when your out walking your dog and your dog starts pulling you to the river and you see a body in the water. There is slight hesitant before you plunge into the water to save the person, but when you lift up the head you're staring at the dream girl of your childhood. So starts a new chapter in Mara's life. Enjoy!

This is a really enjoyable but thought provoking series. Bridget Essex has a wonderful imagination that can weave hard issues with exciting characters. I love all her writing but this one brought light to the darkness.

1st read: I had to go back and revisit this story because I forgot how great this was. And forgot I even actually didn't review this one.
2nd read: I revisited this series this past week, and I forgot how amazing the world-building was in the series. Can we ever get the Queen of this other fantastical world a wife or lover? Give her some healing. Maybe she could have some love of her own fall through the sky and accidentally on top of her.
Firstly, it's fantasy and build-up is a huge part of that character growth, and so that is important before the hot stuff.
Secondly, I would've liked to see more fight scenes in this. To see more tension. More dread, like the thought that you can die by the hands of an enemies sword and never be able to tell someone you love, how much you really loved them. Then to describe what a stabbing pain, followed by enormous burning and hot feeling as it leaves a hole in the side, what it could feel like, then how it could feel as the world goes dark. Something more dramatic and real like that would've been a nice touch. Fantasy elements were cool, drama was good, action wasn't too bad looking back but could've been more like I said, a bit more dark and to describe what that world of swords and daggers and spears could feel like.

From what I've read of this series so far, which is all but the last as far as I know, this entry is emotionally the deepest, most compelling, and arguably sexiest. Mara is so wonderful and her urge to create resonates very deeply with me. I've been lucky in my life where my family and friends at least tolerate if not celebrate what I am. The tale told in here of being abandoned for being LGBTQA is a sadly common story even today when acceptance and support is growing by leaps and bounds. The pain the two main women go through is excruciating, but at least they find each other after a lifetime of dreaming of one another. They find home in the other's heart and that's just beautiful. This one continues the events from Date Knight and I can't help but wonder where the next one will tie in. There are a lot of side character lady knights who still need love. With each short story I'm drawn more and more into Agrotera and I can't wait to see how it will continue to grow.

I read a ton of lesbian romance novels this year. I have no idea why. All of them were of decidedly average quality, and most of them mesh together in my memory. I read at least 1/4 by this one author, though, and most of hers center on supernatural stuff.
This series I read mostly last year. The first one, A Knight To Remember, I enjoyed, and the sequel I actually enjoyed more. Then I think there was a third one I can barely remember? And then this one. Which I basically skimmed through. This one was my least favorite of the series.
I honestly don't even feel like I can be bothered to get into details. It wasn't terrible, it just... wasn't that great. The one sex scene was OK I guess.

Unfulfilled
I was really looking forward to Charaxus's story and I have to say I was kind of let down. She's a big and bad knight who you really don't get to spend much time with and I still don't feel like we got that in this book. There wasn't much build up between them, granted I'm all for instant connections, but I still want something between them to grab onto, unlike the other Knight books where's there's a bit more development between the characters. And the ending just left many things unsaid and a bit lacking. What happened in Agrotera? What happens with them? Just seemed a bit rushed. I love the Knight books and just wished Charaxus' would have lived up to my expectations of her image.

Great
I never thought I wanted the “evil queen” to find someone.... then again I discovered that’s there’s a whole other side to her and I truly loved it. The story is pretty great and Ms Essex is amazing at bringing her characters to life, despite the fantasy element to it. Can’t wait for the next!!

Another homerun
Bridget hit another homerun with this one. I love the storyline. These two women were perfect for each other. Thank you Bridget for another great read. Definitely recommend this book.

I've got a bone to pick with the author.
Okay, so this is part of the "Knight" series, right?
The prequel novellas, has a couple where one has black hair and the other has red hair.
The main couple, from novella 1 and 2, one has black hair and the other has red hair.
And, the couple in this novella, novella number 3, one has black hair and the other has red hair.
Now. I can forgive the fact that half of each couple has black hair -- dark coloured hair is pretty common. It can come in a bunch of different shades and textures.
But. The fact that half of each couple has red hair (maybe even curly/wavy hair? can't remember) is ridiculous. It isn't even a common hair colour! And like, if you got all three couples in the same room, they'd be photo-copies of each other. Because they all exist in the same universe, and will probably all be together at some point. I hate it. I hate it so much.
Holy shit it's so stupid.
But. Anyway.
The novella is pretty charming, I dig the supporting cast. I actually think I like them better than the main couple. The dramatic "tension" (such as it is) just comes off as melodramatic - I'm not referring to the fact that both women have some serious emotional baggage, that was actually pretty interesting - I mean the whole "should I go with her, should she stay with me, which world will we stay in??"
(Spoilers from this point on, can't be bothered to spoiler-cut it, you've been warned)
After so many of the previous novellas, which center around this drama EXACTLY, it's getting kind of old. Especially how by the end of it, just like the DJ x Merc couple, it isn't really solved.
Oh, also, again -- this novella's mere existence spoils the fact that the knight character survives the events of the previous novella. And nothing is really solved or settled by the end of it, which makes the whole thing feel kinda pointless.
I filed this under "technically romance" because the main couple didn't really grab me. They function off the "I HAVE JUST MET YOU AND I LOVE YOU" principal -- justified by the fact that they've been dreaming about each other their entire lives (for... reasons that are never really explained). I dunno.
I dig the soul-mates trope in fic, usually, but I just didn't feel it with this story. I do like how the part where they're like "holy shit this is the moment that was the dream, WHAT DO", but, otherwise, it was just a lot of sex and I LOVEEEEE YOUUUUU because.... dreams....? Meh. *shrugs*
So... yeah... I think that's all of this series that's been published so far? I'll def keep an eye out for future installments, but I'm starting to get a feeling that they'll remain unstasifying as long as they remain in this brief, episodic format. =/
