Leadership & Strategy Lessons from Alexander the Great by business strategist Leandro P. Martino is not only the quintessential guide to a quintessential leader, but also a necessary exploration of the characteristics that made him so. Unmatched after more than two thousand years, Alexander the Great remains an unsurpassed example of strength and leadership. Far from becoming obsolete in modern times, most of Alexander's traits and behaviors have become increasingly relevant to anyone in a leadership position, including politicians, military officers and those in corporate business and non-profit organizations. Throughout this book, Martino celebrates the warrior, the king, and the history of the commander who was worshipped as a god during his own life, and shows how his leadership skills and strategies apply to modern life. By providing specific, detailed examples from Alexander the Great's life and military campaigns, the author shows how to identify and use the most effective sources of power according to current leadership theories. This book is a must read for anyone who aspires to excellence as a leader in their field or profession.
Had this book on the shelf for some time. Had looked at it and was put off by allot of pictures of battle formations, my first impression was that it would be a book mainly about military tactics. But I was wrong and the tactics that were included was very interesting. Plowed through it in two days, very entertaining and hard to put down.
The book is not linear in time but jumps between many different events if they are inline with the chapter topic such as strategy, negotiations, reputation, incentives etc. Great book if you want a modern adaptation of ancient lessons in leadership with some modern examples to prove some points. The author, Leandro Martino, shows us that the ancient worlds military campaigns is in great respects parallel to our times corporations and Alexander the Great's character and example of much use to business leaders of today, and have been as he shows in his book.
Read it if you have an interest in both ancient history and modern leadership.
