About the author

Suchitra Bhattacharya

Her writing focuses on contemporary social issues. She is a perceptive observer of the changing urban milieu and her writing closely examines the contemporary Bengali middle class. Crisis in human relationships and the changing values of the present era along with degeneration of the moral fibre of the society in the backdrop of globalisation and consumerism are depicted in her prose. Exploitations and sufferings of women regardless of their social or economic identities find a distinct voice in her writing. While she is famous for her writing on women's issues, she does not consider herself as a feminist. She took up many odd jobs in her early youth and finally joined the public service which she left in 2004 to become a fulltime writer. Her long career is reflected in many of her stories and novels.

Over the past two decades, Suchitra has written about 24 novels and a large number of short stories in different leading Bangla literary magazines. Some of her acclaimed novels are Kachher Manush (Close to Me), Dahan (The Burning), Kacher Dewal(The Wall Of Glass), Hemonter Pakhi(Bird of Autumn), Neel Ghurni, Aleek Shukh(Heavenly happiness), Gabhir Ashukh (A Grave Illness), Uro Megh(Flying Cloud), Chhera Taar, Alochhaya(Shadows Of Light), Anyo Basanto(Another Spring), Parabas, Palabar Path Nei, Aami Raikishori, Rangin Pritibi and Jalchhobi among others. Her novels and short stories have been translated into many Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English. She also writes novels and short stories for children. Her novel Dahan was made into a movie by famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.

After long time I read a Bengali book.
Honestly, while scrolling through thousands of books in a library, I suddenly saw the title of the book, and it was enough to convince me to read the book.
This is a very short read and if you're an avid reader it will hardly two days to complete reading this book.
Mitin Mashi was traveling Kulu- Manali with her family and in a hotel she found a pendrive, and with that the story starts!
The story will lead through the missing of very famous paintings from the museum and it will also lead the search of those painting with police officers along with the help of Mitin mashi.
I really loved how the author used humour in the story through some little conversations and the way the author created the plots and story line is just amazing!
If you're a travel freak or simple love mysterious story then you will love this book!

Mitin aka Pragnya Paromita Mukherjee of Third Eye Detective Agency is now in Kullu with her family for the Dussehra vacation. Partho, her husband, and son, Bumbum are accompanied by Mitin's sister, Saheli, her husband, Aboni and her daughter, Tupur, who is also Mitin's assistant in all her sleuthing ventures.

Unable to get accommodation in the valley, Partho, with the help of their local driver, Tinku Singh, hires two rooms in a well furnished cottage, on the outskirts of Kullu. That night Mitin's son Bumbum finds a pendrive in the drawer of the computer table kept in the room.

Curious Mitin and Tupur, on checking the contents, find photographs of original paintings of the controversial artist, Nicholas Roerich, in the pendrive. That very night they also overhear a heated exchange between Bibhob Sharma, the owner of the cottage, and Baijnath Rai, a local painter. On enquiry the next morning, Mitin learns that Baijnath was commissioned by two visitors (who had incidentally put up in the same room in which Mitin and family are now staying), to paint three of Roerich's paintings for a promised amount which was not fully paid to him.

That evening, Mitin unexpectedly meets Baijnath in the Dussehra fair in Kullu. On striking up a conversation, Mitin further learns that Baijnath was asked to make copies of Roerich's original paintings. The next day Mitin along with her family makes a detour to Nicholas Roerich's Art Gallery in Naggor, on the way to Manali.

However, on reaching, they find the Gallery closed for the day as there has been a break in and an investigation is in progress. Mitin introduces herself to the investigation in-charge, DSP Ashutosh Shah, handing over the pendrive and explaining how she has got hold of it. She also shows the content of the drive to Shah and the Gallery Manager, Kishanlal Duggar, requesting the latter to recheck the paintings displayed on the first floor where the break in has taken place.

To Duggar's added consternation, three of Roerich's paintings are found to have been replaced by copies. He requests Mitin to carry on a parallel investigation for expeditious closure of the matter. Mitin agrees.

A chase follows from Naggor to Kullu to Manali to Manikaran Sahab and back to Kullu, to nab the culprits.

The USP of this detective story is weaving in the historical artist Nicholas Roerich and his Art Gallery into the plot. Roerich had spent years before his death in the valley and is still respected by the locals. The author also gives detailed descriptions of the scenic beauty of the valley and other touristy spots located around wherein the adventurous chase to catch the art thieves are set in.

The book is available on Amazon and its audio version, an engrossing presentation, can be heard on Thriller Land on YouTube.
