In this gentle yet suspenseful story, three adventurous little ducklings wander away from their barnyard home and unwittingly avoid disaster after disaster until they eventually return to the nest, where their mother takes them under her wing for a nap.
Ron Roy has been writing books for children since 1974. He is the author of dozens of books, including the popular A to Z Mysteries®, Calendar Mysteries, and Capital Mysteries. When not working on a new book, Ron likes to teach tricks to his dog Pal, play poker with friends, travel, and read thrilling mystery books.
This is one of my favorite story time books ---- the three little ducks walked right in front of the big red bull...…. the three little ducks always avoid disaster when they notice something..... "Look" said the first little duck. "Grasshoppers" said the second little duck. "Let's get them" said the third little duck. And so it goes until they are right in front of ………….
Completely oblivious to the ever-present danger, three ducklings venture out for a thrill-a-minute adventure. It's a sweet, and charming tale that may enthrall the youngest listeners, and bore the older ones. Paul Galdone's artwork is, as always, a treat.
Three ducklings go awandering in and out of trouble in this barnyatd story from a bygone era. Published in 1979, the illustrations by the talented Paul Galdone looked older than that. Interesting observation - This is by Ron Roy who would later go on to write A to Z Mysteries.
Genre: Fantasy Awards: None Audience: Ages 4-6 A. This book is animal fantasy because the main characters are animals who talk and act like humans. B. The author implores the reader to suspend their disbelief when the story first starts with the talking ducks interacting with the angry bull. C. The setting is magic in the real world because the ducks and all the animals are in the "real" world interacting with each other in human-like ways. D. The theme of this book is that children can go on adventures by themself and survive for a little bit but they always find their way back to their mother or gardian.
I haven't read this with a child, so my rating may change.
I'm surprised that the mother duck wasn't immensely relieved when her three ducklings returned home safe and sound. She would have been aware of the dangers even though her little ones were oblivious.
Summary: Blind luck protects three little ducks when they venture out of the barnyard.
Three little ducks wander away from their mom and almost get eaten by a bull, some foxes, a hawk, and a snake. They return home safely to their mom. The ducks never realize the danger they are in but their actions, usually a distraction of some sort, saves their lives.
Good book for preschool story time as the students can guess which animal danger is next. "and then went wandering on through the woods, RIGHT IN FRONT OF..." (answer is on the next page).

A cute story of some ducklings who chose to venture off to explore and not knowing that they were one step too near to the danger that lurks just around the corner. A sweet book although I don't know whether the message would be good for those parents who like to mention that everything is either good or bad with nothing in between. Perhaps in the end it will be a much better beginning book to explain why one shouldn't lean upon chance luck when one ventures out.
The illustrations are beautiful and help to make the book what it is. Just a nice simple book to relax with and fall into the pictures.
A childhood favorite that I had forgotten, serendipitously rediscovered on a shelf at the library. My impression now is that these ducks are particularly foolhardy, but as a kid I loved this. Excellent pictures!
Very cute story. The three ducks face imminent danger time and again but escape through various lucky chances. The only problem I have with this story is that the the mother looks more like a goose than a duck.
Reminds me of It Could've Been Worse by A.H. Benjamin, except that the ducks had a much better day than the mouse. There's an interesting subtext to both stories, though, that danger is around every corner and it's pretty much by luck that we survive. I wonder if kids ever pick up on that?
three ducks have a few close calls while out for the day. galdone pictures. opportunities for children to guess what is around the corner. may be fun for readaloud despite book's smaller size.
