Fantastic Pirate fun. My kids loved the pattern in this book and quickly worked out what Captain Sneer 'really' wanted. They wanted to read it time and time again and they found the illustrations captivating with their intimate detail and infectious characters. ...more

I love this book! The text has a rollicking rhythm and rhyme that hilariously subverts reader expectations until the very end. There are surprises to be had at the turn of every page.

The illustrations are absolutely perfect for the swashbuckling tale - wonderfully earthy full paged pictures (think 'Pirates of the Caribbean' rather than Disney's 'Hook') yet with a luminescence that glitters like the elusive gold. Evans has used pencil, watercolour and gouache to create this effect. With the Capt

Captain Sneer, The Buccaneer is one of my favorite picture books of the year.

This highly original pirate story has the bossy, boastful Captain Sneer at center stage. But behind the scenes, this buccaneer just wants his mummy. And while he may talk a tough talk, he's really quite scared of pirate-y things. With perfect pacing, well thought out transitions between pages and a never-saw-that-coming ending, this wonderful story keeps young readers guessing (and laughing) until the very last page.

A great swashbuckling tale to make little ones laugh out loud. Like many preschoolers I know, Captain Sneer likes to think he's rough and tough, but the life of a pirate isn't always easy. Kids love to see through his boasting and figure out what he really wants. Great rhyming text from Penny Morrison and rich, luscious illustrations from Gabriel Evans. Recommended. ...more

Captain Sneer the Buccaneer is a great story written by Penny Morrison and Illustrated by Gabriel Evans. It is a fun book about a pirate trying to be brave while looking for gold. It is well-written, rhymes and uses anticipation very well. However I felt the book was spoiled by the dark illustrations which didn't reflect the light-hearted nature of the writing. The illustrations were well-drawn but the colouring was gloomy. At the critical moment of the story the details in the picture are almos ...more

Captain Sneer the Buccaneer is brave and bold and on the look out for gold or so he claims. For all his boasting Captain Sneer might not be all that he appears.
This delightful picture book got my five-year-old chanting, “Captain Sneer the Buccaneer” all evening.
Penny Morrison has written a captivating picture book. Its fun, playful rhymes keep you guessing and wanting to turn the page to see if the Captain will indeed call for his mummy!
With lots of pirate talk and beautiful pictures by Gabrie

How clever is Penny Morrison to write a rhyming picture book that also has a brilliant story? I love the layering in this book. How Captain Sneer tries to act like a big tough pirate but really he just wants his mummy. Small children will love joining in with the repetitive ARRH! And it's a rare picture book that has a really satisfying twist at the end. This one managed to do this and be heart-warming to boot! ...more

My son likes this book and has his own copy signed by the illustrator Gabriel Evans who signed it in person at a book launch. Great pirate story for kids.
