Raiders and Blockaders is a collection of articles by three authors (prominent Civil War naval historian William N. Still, Jr. foremost) that cover a wide-ranging list of subjects. Among the topics of the articles are ironclads and officers of both sides, the blockade, Confederate commerce raiders, and even a literary charletan.
The articles are all relatively short, and mostly don't go into too much depth as a result. They are easy and pleasant reads, though, and provide a good primer on Civil War naval topics. There are some rather esoteric subjects covered among the articles, as well, so even experienced readers on the subject will find some things of interest.
As a retired naval officer and historian I was hoping for much more from this book. It was not bad but there was no original material or in depth research. All of the articles it contained were reprints of various authors from older editions of Civil War magazines. Well worth the time spent to read if you are just filling time. Like as not you will not learn much new.
