Katie MacAlister

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

If someone asked me why I like Katie MacAlister's 'Aisling Grey/Dragon' series, it would be hard to come up with just one reason. There's hot dragon sex, there's comedy, humor and silliness, there's a demon masquerading as a Newfoundland dog, there's mystery and treachery, and did I mention the hot dragon sex?

Mayling is a doppelganger. She was created by a pact between her 'sister' the naiad Cyrene and the Demon Lord Magoth. Cyrene sacrificed her common sense (and boy does she give airhead a new meaning) and Magoth gets a bound servant who can access the 'between'. To further confuse things, Mayling is apparently the mate of Gabriel, the wyvern of the Silver Dragons. Confusing because the silver dragons were cursed to be without real human mates. But apparently since Mayling isn't a 'real' human, the curse is circumvented! Which should be good except now Magoth is insisting that Mayling become his consort!! There's alot more goings-on that you'll just have to read about yourself.

If sexy paranormals with all the above ingredients sound good to you...definitely get yourself started on this rollicking series by Katie MacAlister.

Argh. I don't know what is going on with Katie MacAlister but I once again got to the end of her book and turned the last page - realized the story was ending and said WTF? I think my issue here is that this book really can't be read alone and honestly - there is no resolutions here - just a furthering of the plot. I suspect the next book will have more meat in the story - but as for this one - it was all filler - building for the next book.

I am not sure why that bothers me - I think it's been too long since I read the first one now and I have a hard time remembering what I found so compelling about Gabriel and May at this point. There are a lot of details that I think will end up being important in books 3 (and perhaps book 4 if MacAlister goes there) but how do you hold on to them for a year when the next book comes out? I mean, really - a girl can go through a lot of books in a year - and remembering what color dragon somebody was in a shadow realm when the next book finally gets released is a bit of a challenge.

I think ideally I would wait until all the books were out and read them in order once they are all published - but at this point I am half way through and I have the third book in my hot little hands - so I will read on (cuz Katie MacAlister is always fun no matter what) and hope that if there is a 4th book I retain a few details of the first three and enjoy it.

Up In Smoke is technically book 2 in the Silver Dragon series. However, the series works a lot better if you read the 4-part Aisling Grey series first as Aisling and her mate, Drake show up a TON in the Silver Dragon series.

I liked Up In Smoke, but much less than previous books. It might be that I just don't like May (the "heroine") as much as I liked Aisling from the first series. But, since I very much enjoy the world, I shall continue reading it.

I've learned from the author's website that there will be at least two more books in the "dragon septs" novels, however there isn't any information as to the title or the next book let alone it's publication date. *sigh* Oh well.

Right. I should probably mention that I would definitely categorize these books as light romance/fantasy. They're very easy reads and the actual sex scenes are also light and glossed over - no heavy erotica in these books at all. They're definitely humorous and though they deal with the Underworld and dragons, etc, they're really not "dark" fantasy.

Similar series:

- Glory St. Clair series by Gerry Bartlett (light PNR w/vampires)
- Accidental Witch Trilogy & Triplet Witch Trilogy by Annette Blair (light PNR w/witches)
- Fred the Mermaid series by Maryjanice Davidson (light PNR w/mermaid)
- Queen Betsy series also by Maryjanice Davidson (light PNR, vamps)
- Dead End Dating series by Kimberly Raye (light PNR, vamps)
- *Immortally Sexy series by Stephanie Rowe (light PNR, demon, dragons, magic)

While this second book didn't grab me like the first one did, it was still enjoyable. May's life is way more screwed up than Aisling's ever was - it's kinda fun to see what MacAlister can come up with :)

She ends up being Magoth's consort in order to get out of Abbadon and back to Gabriel, along with Magoth whose powers are minimal in our world, but Magoth is just a side plot that doesn't pop up again until the very end. The real story here is about the dragon heart shards that are housed in phylacteries and the mysterious and powerful dragon who can find May in the Shadow World. It's densely plotted for a paranormal romance, it's dark, it's turbulent, it's steamy, and I love May.

This second of MacAlister's Silver Dragon series is a delightful continuation of the first book. This story picks up one month after the last book finished on a cliffhanger.

May, the doppelganger mate of the Silver dragon's leader Gabriel, has been stuck in Abaddon (Hell) with Magoth, the demon lord, for almost 6 weeks trying to keep from becoming his Consort. She is in this mess because she disobeyed a direct order from Magoth to keep from giving a Silver dragon valued treasure to him thus being punished into her current predicament. She misses Gabriel so much but is confident he is working on getting her out of there somehow.

Gabriel, May's mate, comes up with a plan with the help of the former demon prince Aisling (yes, a female can be a prince in Hell) to free May.

In typical MacAlister style, this is a hysterical story of how May gets out of Abaddon but, at a huge price. There is the usual intrigue and conspiracies of the dragon septs to deal with as well with three dragon leadership positions in question. There are two quasi-challenges for May Gabriel has to fend off. Add in the fact that Aisling, mate to another dragon sept leader, is pregnant and being coddled to her last nerve by Drake and the reader will end up laughing through most of the book.

I enjoyed this sexy addition to the Silver Dragons series. Paranormal romance, urban fantasy and dragon genre fans should as well. While this can be read as a stand alone, don't. Your enjoyment will be greater if read in order.

Written in the first person from May's point of view. Sadly, I've picked up this book numerous times and put it down again. I just can't get into this particular story. (It's number two in a trilogy.) I can't get a clear picture of the H/h in my mind from the writing and feel the chemistry in the romance is missing. The many side characters and sub plots are messing with my brain. I usually love this author's different writing style, but I had to draw a line and DNF. Sorry.

The scenes that made me snort with laughter…

Aisling in the kitchen after getting a muscle cramp. Gabriel prodding her belly convinced she’s going into labor. Drake roaring at him to keep his damn hands off his mate. The whole house in a uproar with Istvàn wanting to boil water and Pàl bolting out of the house to get the midwife. All the while Aisling trying to tell them without much success that they’re over reacting. It was funny thinking of Jim as the squeamish type wanting to leave the scene to avoid the “baby juice, blood and guck”. Considering he’s a centuries old demon, he’s must of seen it all at some point. {snicker}

In the clothing shop in Paris with May on the mobile phone with Cyrene. Who informs her twin that because May is a mate to Gabriel, she must be mate to Kostya. And she being very attentive looking after this very needy dragon for the 6 weeks Mays been gone.

Thank you so much for hooking these two ( an airhead & control freak ) up. It’s so much fun seeing Kostya tortured like this. I dare say it won’t last for long as Cy will probably get distracted by some other needy/insane dragon.

Sally, Sally, Sally… for some reason I got it in my head that she was the 20 something version of Dolores Umbridge of Harry Potter ilk, puke pink pepto bismal outfit - attitude and all. Ha!

I loved Katie's knowledge of surfer speak 101. I snorted with laughter and lost my place so often I had to read that passage in the book twice. It was just so gnarly dude!!

Katie's really got me shaking my head over Magoth buck naked in a church fountain getting randy with a statue. I guess if he doesn’t have powers to create havoc, then the next best thing would be to cause wide spread disgust (ie thumbing your nose at the court of divine blood). Either that, or he’s up to something and Katie's going to spring it on us in book 3.

I loved all the dragon sex scenes between Gabriel and May. Especially that one with the gold dust and Gab trying, but without much success, at foreplay. As for May, I think she should just give into the shard and become a dragon for the time being. Who knows the key to her being freed from Magoth might be in turning into a dragon and braking the bond he has over her. I’ve heard Katie state several times dragons cannot be minions of demon lords.

Now what's up with this white dragon that’s also an archmage…. Hummmm interesting…. Or being white and therefore ouroboros without a sept? Even more interesting….. So who can he be? Baltic, Constantine Norka, some other ancient dragon or Dr. Kostich. And why is he helping Fiat - trying to kill off all the other wyverns?

Oh man, I’m going to burst from curiosity/frustration before November 2009 gets here!!!

I want so badly to like Katie MacAllister's world, but for some reason, this story and Playing with Fire both fell short. Every plot point seemed to need further development. The story-telling strikes me as shallow with respect to details. And the jealousy that exists between the dragons gets very tiresome. A little show of testosterone is great, but MacAllister makes it a major plot point. The fact that no one seems to respect a couple's pairing only serves to undermine the idea that the couple actually belong together. Also, May is STILL harboring jealous feelings toward Aisling, regardless of the solidity of Aisling and Drake's relationship and the certainty of Gabriel's feelings.

In addition, I feel as though there's too much going on: the civil unrest within specific septs, the wars between the septs, Cy's problems with Neptune, May's issues with Magoth, the irritating presence of Sally, the dragon heart shards, the mysterious dragon on the sidelines, plus Gabriel and May's relationship and all the complications therein...

Perhaps if MacAllister focused on only a few of these elements, she could create a tighter, more coherent story. As is, almost every aspect of the tale seems forced. Good premise, but lacking in real follow-through.

A lot of people who enjoyed the Guardian series have had trouble with this one, so I still want to read You Slay Me and see if Gabriel and May are the real problems here.

*Inhalt:*

Reihe:
Dragon Love - Feuer und Flamme für diesen Mann
Dragon Love - Manche lieben's heiß
Dragon Love - Rendezvous am Höllentor
Dragon Love - Höllische Hochzeitsglocken

Silver Dragons – Ein brandheißes Date
Silver Dragons – Viel Rauch um Nichts
Silver Dragons – Drachen lieben heißer

Light Dragons – Drache wider Willen (erscheint im Januar 2013)
Light Dragons – Eine feurige Angelegenheit (erscheint im Juli 2013)
...?

May has been trapped as a demon lord's consort in Abaddon, striving to win her freedom to return to Gabriel. When they are finally reunited, a mysterious dragon who can enter the shadow world along with intrigues in the blue and red septs threaten any chance for a happily ever after.

So close to a happy ending, but then one last twist has to crop up... I suppose I'm definitely not used to these story arcs with multiple issues coming up before we get a happily ever after, but I think I do find them a little annoying. It did take me a while to read this one, but once I finally sat down and dug into it it was a lot more interesting. Gabriel is definitely a better hero than Drake is (less authoritarian), and there's a lot going on.

MacAlister's books are always fun. May gets sprung from Abaddon, and as always has plenty to keep her busy. Her twin has decided she is the mate to Gabriel's slightly evil brother, the battle for the blue dragons is still going on, the wyvern of the red dragons is being held prisoner in Abaddon, and May winds up with one of five shards of the original dragon heart using her as its vessel.

But as with the last one, the ending seems abrupt, like the whole Silver Dragon series was written in one chunk, and then chopped into bits by editors. Wrap up your story lines in each book, leaving some threads dangling and the overall major plot line running.

Up to her usual standards, a quick and fun read. I took a writing seminar once where the instructor said that one way that you have a great story is to ask yourself if your characters would want to hurt you if they came to life and met you. I honestly think that in MacAlister's case, May would definitely want to do her bodily harm. Plot twist after plot twist occurs. More about the world is revealed. Jim the demon in Newfoundland form is in the book.

Good solid read, but read the Aisling Grey and first Silver Dragons book before reading this book (unless you already have).

May and Gabriel, the doppelganger and dragon duo, are back with problems from a demon lord and several dragons.

I think it comes down to my not liking May and Gabriel as much as Aisling and Drake. A & D make a few cameos, which reminded me that I'd like to be reading this from their p.o.v. I had read about half before thanksgiving break and left it at my apartment for the week; that says it all.

I will say that there is a hilarious bit with Pal. Also - Cyrene wasn't so annoying this time around.

For those of you who read, Katie MacAlister, you won't be disappointed. I think I like May and Gabriel better than Aisling and Drake. I like both series a lot but May is less whiney than Aisling was. It is okay to complain and be bitchy occasionaly but honestly a herione that just constantly does that even in "funny" manner gets boring after a while. I like this world too and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Per usual, this book is hysterical. I love that MacAlister can be funny and still have a serious plot. I've enjoyed all these books since the beginning of the Aisling Grey series, and this was no exception. Her characters are believable, the plots are intriguing, and the conversations will make you laugh.

This book has fun, quirky characters and tons of action. If I had one complaint it might be that there was almost TOO MUCH action, and not enough character development. Overall, an enjoyable, escapist read.

Somehow too much and too little at the same time. Plot twists are all good and dandy, and constant action is mighty fine too, and yet humor is stale, with exception of the cursed penis. That's just atrocious. Even demon dog Jim is fails.
But I shall persevere.

I had such high hopes for the second Silver Dragons book. The first one was decent and kept me entertained. This one, not so much. And the reason for that is rather simple. This is one of those stories where a lot of little frivolous stuff happens but the plot doesn't feel like it's moving.

This sort of storytelling is frustrating! I want plot developement not ample amounts of stalling. So initially May is in the demon world with Magoth, then she gets saved, as we all knew she would. Things do not go off without a hitch though because this is a book! Plus things are tricky due to all the demon stuff.

Treading carefully with the inhabitants of Abaddon, May then makes a big oopsie that changes things greatly while at a dragon meeting. Due to said oopsie, the heroine starts to loose herself and then a whole bunch of dramatic crap appears along with a ridiculous amount of sex scenes.

In the Green Dragons novels I thought Gabriel was an okay guy, but now that I am reading his Silver Dragons books I can't help but feel that he is a rather weak character. I do not get the allure! The supposed 'love' and romance in Up in Smoke felt dull and flat. There was no sexual tension or genuine sweetness that tugged on my emotions. Also, the pet name 'Little Bird' is absolutely terrible! You think a dude as old as Gabriel could come up with a better one than that but apparently not!

Then just for funsies MacAlister decides to add in Cyrene moments. I had originally thought there could be no one else more irritating than Jim. I was wrong! Cyrene is the WORST character to read about. She is not a funny side character, merely an annoyance. I can't stand her and her stupidity! The fact that she likes to blame others for her neglect irks me to the nth degree.

Now there are a few interesting or amusing things that happen in the book but they do not happen as frequently as I would like them to. This second story feels like it's just a bunch of filler. It's basically a buildup story so that the last Silver Dragons book finishes with a bang! Too bad that all that buildup made this one pretty crappy.

At this point in time I will just be happy when I finish this septs tale. May and Gabriel bore me. Their schoomzy love fest makes me cringe. I like cheese just as much as the anyone else but this is too sappy for my liking! Thank goodness for the Aisling and Drake cameos! I might have lost my mind if it hadn't been for their part in the story. I will be a wonder if I can finish this series with my sanity intact. Fingers crossed!

Whew! Buckle up for a ride. This book is perfect illustration of the mayhem that Katie often complains of happening in her brain. As May and Gabriel's story continues, there are so many twists and turns and complications in trying to deal with demons and dragons and even Neptune that I gave up trying to sort it all out in my mind and just went along for the ride. I don't know how Katie manages to create such vivid characters and worlds and keep all the "rules" and details straight. Even the characters span multiple books and I keep thinking, "who is this person? Haven't I seen them in another book/story before?" Alas, I can't find a character cheat sheet anywhere for Katie's books but if I start rereading them all, it might be worth creating one so I can truly appreciate all the connections and continuations. All that aside, May is such a fabulous and complex character who is doing the best she can to figure out who she is and how to get the life she wants (and deserves!). This book was enjoyable from first page to last. But be warned that if you're reading this trilogy, you'll want all 3 when you start. Books 1 and 2 each end with so many more questions and complications . . . and I can't wait to see how she resolves everything in book 3 to give May and Gabriel their happily ever after that they so richly deserve!

Just Too Quirky
So, thanks to the cliffhanger at the end of book one, I decided to go straight into this one, book two in the series. I've now officially discovered what my limit is for over-the-top quirkiness, because I reached it about halfway thru this book. Yikes! Honestly, I don't think it's the story as much as it is the narrator. I'm completely over these voicings--this is actually a rare example where I might have enjoyed reading the text better than listening to the audio. For example, the character Jim (a demon in a big Newffie dog's body) is a total hoot, but his voice is just cringe-worthy.

If you're like me, and you enjoyed the first book enough to go on to the second, do yourself a favor and don't do them back to back. Enjoy another book or two by different authors before you come back to this series. I think you'll enjoy it better. If you can't stand a little dose of insanity in your paranormal romance, well, this probably isn't the one for you then.

more like 3.25 stars!

it's a continuation of where we left off, and though i like the first book better, this book is not bad at all. but for some reason, i just got bored by it? i'm not sure why, I struggled to finish the last half of the book, and I only finished to put down that I finished the book.

maybe i felt that gabriel and may were getting repetitive? or that I didn't really care for the whole may becoming a dragon with the shard sub-plot? something seemed lackluster that made me not as interested in the story. which is sad because i love finishing series and seeing stuff to the end but i don't think i will proceed to read the next book.

Really entertaining. Much better if you read the first few with Aisling Grey. Much funnier. I wish the dragon mates got more of a chance to engage in trouble solving together without having the dragons hovering everywhere. I get the passion scenes, but the women bring powers of their own. They should get to play and get messy with danger too. Silver dragons more sexual than green dragons sexy and funny. I will read the rest and see…
