I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. And I’m sorry – but it’s about to get REAL HONEST. I read a ton, and I’ve only ever given a review this bad to two other books. The story as described in the blurb was not played out in this book. Maybe that's the description of what the entire series will be? Much more time was spent with the main character having "episodes" of various kinds. The plot had extreme promise. The main character killed it. She’s whiny and immature, and for some reason when she laughs too hard, she always hyperventilates, and either her ex or her new crush has to hold her on his lap and softly talk her through re-controlling her breathing like a little kid, then there’s a whole aftermath of needing an ice pack, and some pain reliever, and plenty of rest. One episode of laughing, and she’s out of commission for a few hours. And the laughing/hyperventilating has nothing to do with the plot. She also can’t decide if she’s a sultry temptress who uses the f-word a lot or a fragile flirt who says things like “this sucks dishwater” and “crap on a cracker”. One character apparently turns British a third of the way through the book. He starts using words like “mates” and “bloke” and starts a lot of sentences with “Blooming!” and “Smashing!” He didn’t talk like that at all in the beginning.
Plot holes abound. There is a former special ops guy tracking Alexis and trying to covertly communicate with her, but apparently he’s lost all of his special training because he just finds himself foiled at every turn. The police found the listening devices! Now what do I do? When he tells her they need to meet, she tells him she has company, come on over. He walks in, they speak, she leaves the room and he wonders off to mingle with the house party (all dudes, actually the police - he's not supposed to know), does not talk to Alexis, she goes to bed, the next morning, everyone is like, I guess he stayed the night too, we didn’t see him leave. And… he’s downstairs making pancakes (?!). Then it skips to a different day. During this same fake house party, everyone was surprised to see a strange woman at the door, she walks in, hugs one of the detectives, he calls her by name, and then it’s like she never existed. We don’t know why she showed up, how she got there (because everyone else had to be buzzed in or have the gate code), or where she went.
Most of the book is spent rambling around a creepy mansion with ghosts with an army of detectives and police from various agencies and her new crush the District Attorney (boss on her internship), and every time things get really serious, they also call the best friend (also a guy) and the ex (a med student) to come over too. So every time she laughs too hard, gets overrun with emotion, or gets attacked by a ghost, doctor boy has to come bring his medical bag and give her a full exam (in the living room with all the detectives and police chilling out, and the new crush holding her) And despite these scenarios this is not one of those weird multi-sided romance books. It’s just supposed to be a mystery. But unfortunately all of her special needs and flirtation and all this ridiculous fawning over her completely overtake the story. Literally, there are no other women in the story for about 95% of the book.
AND - it doesn't end. It's not even like a cliffhanger... it just stops in the middle of something, no resolution to anything. I will NOT be reading more of the series. The author says in the acknowledgments that the story is based on actual family lore and legend she was told. That is fantastic - if the story were more about that, it would have been great. If the author reads this, please know that the lore and legend part was really cool. It just didn't make up enough of the story.
