This is not one of those books that you read straight through, cover to cover. It is more of a reference book and an interesting one at that. This book is extremely helpful in tree care situations. Any good Arborist will have read, or at least have heard of this book. This book is all about the organisms that provide some of the very basic needs for human survival, but it isn't just for nature nerds and Arborists. Trees almost always increase property value by substantial amounts in every region of the country and proper care of those trees secures your investments. The way Alex Shigo almost personifies trees and their anatomy encourages careful care of trees. Good reference book to have around.

A fundamental treatise for anyone looking to understand that which is beneath the bark, especially those beginning their study of tree structure and how trees decay. This was the book that solidified my career journey in the formative years. I treasure my signed copy. Thank you, Dr. Shigo, you are missed but never forgotten.

Grammatical/editing issues here and there. Personifiying trees way too much for a book that's meant to be more scientific.
