About the author

Donna Levin is an almost-San Francisco native, since she was born in Oakland. She’s the author of four previous novels, *Extraordinary Means*, *California Street*, *There’s More Than One Way Home*, and *He Could Be Another Bill Gates*, as well as two books on the craft of writing, *Get That Novel Started* and *Get That Novel Written*. Her papers are part of the Howard Gotlieb Research Center at Boston University, and the California State Library’s collection of California novels. On April 23, 2024, Skyhorse Publishing published her latest novel, The Talking Stick.

Io l'ho letto per lavoro non certo per scrivere un romanzo. Ma credo sia un testo che vada letto da tutti quelli che hanno una passione per la narrativa perché è pieno di informazioni e spunti intelligenti. Spiega molte cose pratiche sulla costruzione di un libro: come creare un personaggio, come lavorare sulla trama, la revisione, la riscrittura. È fatto bene, diviso in capitoli, ricco di esempi e i piacevole lettura. Consigliato.

Fondamentale se si vuole scrivere un romanzo. Chiaro, pieno di esempi letterari (occhio agli spoiler, anche se penso che un aspirante scrittore dovrebbe aver già letto Anna Karenina) e di esercizi molto utili.

Un libro semplice e ricco di esempi fatti di estratti ripresi da romanzi classici e moderni del mondo della letteratura, che accompagnano il lettore verso un apprendimento veloce ed efficace.

Utile sia a scrittori alle prime armi, che vogliono muovere i primi passi nel mondo della scrittura e a scrittori che, invece, sono già praticanti e vogliono continuare ad apprendere e migliorare il proprio lavoro e il proprio stile con nuove conoscenze, tecniche e consigli di un’insegnante esperta.

Mi aspettavo qualche esercizio in più, un intrattenimento maggiore, ma sono rimasta comunque soddisfatta dalla lettura, che si è rivelata nettamente preziosa!

The follow up book to get that novel started - this goes into the technical aspects of crafting a novel in a little more depth. It had sections of developing character, style and plot. Again, it's so well written that it's a joy to read. The advice is gives - having written several novels now and having a clearer understanding of what she's talking about - is spot on. This book gives great advice on rewriting your novel and working those drafts to perfection. There are also lots of examples from fiction to help you really grasp what the writer is trying to say. This, is a good book, people!

If you are attempting your first novel or your twenty first, this book will guide you through the process and motivate your every step. Her examples are clear and her exercises helpful. The author is a writing instructor and novelist who knows what it takes to write to be published. It won't tell you how to get published, but you will have written a novel that has a great chance of being picked up if you follow her instructions.

I manuali di Dino Audino Editore sono uno più bello dell'altro e ce n'è davvero per tutti i gusti.
"Scrivere un romanzo" di Donna Levin è sicuramente una buona guida sopratutto per coloro che si affacciano al mondo della scrittura per la prima volta, ma anche un buon ripasso per chi invece scrive già da tempo.

È il libro che cercavo!
Ho sempre scritto a tempo perso, solo per me stessa: mi piace abbastanza il mio stile, ma non sono mai riuscita ad uscire dai ristretti confini dei racconti brevi.
Cercavo un libro che mi aiutasse a esaminare cos'è un romanzo e come si struttura un trama, e alla fine ho trovato questo libro!

Davvero interessante: l'autrice spazia su tutti gli elementi del romanzo, parla dello stile, della costruzione della trama sia in termini microscopici che macroscopici, il tutto con un tono informale e un atteggiamento propositivo e incoraggiante.

Se mai dovessi scoprire che qualcuno vicino a me si sta appassionando alla scrittura, saprò che libro regalargli!

This book goes into great detail about various aspects of writing that first time writers will definitely need help with when writing a novel. Each chapter has easy to understand language and most include helpful exercises at the end to help you along your writing journey
