This is a tough one to rate and review. I’ve reworked this review a couple of times… here’s my best shot at reviewing...

During the first 30% of this book I was engaged with a number of things. I like the charity work our main gal does, love her siblings, was intrigued by some magic and overall felt like maybe there was something here. That was before I read for the fifth time (the author even tells you how many times they’ve shown up in case you lost count) about the crows. I get when you want

I'm sorry I couldn't make it past this point, but the characters and the narration had more angst than all of my four years of high school combined.

The sad thing is that this story really did have potential. It's nothing that the YA genre hasn't seen before, but it's something that, if the writing was better, could really break into the YA market. I think that's what the author was trying to do - relate to her young audience by giving the characters severe attitude problems. While the

First of all, I want to thank the author for stopping me from getting into a reading slump with a previous book that I read and did not like. So thank you for that!

This book was so intriguing and I found myself reading half of it in a span of a day and a couple of others, that's how into it I was!! I loved Alexa as a character, especially when she finally was able to stand up to her grandmother (of whom I still don't know what to feel about her). I felt like she did mature a little throughout t

Piercing the Veil (The Crusaders #1) by Nicole L. Taylor

Alexa lives with a very controlling Grandmother and her siblings. She just graduated and wants to live her own life, and get away from her dominating grandmother. Then strange events occurs, and she is about to find out she is the reason why. She knows she has special abilities (telepathy and empathy) but finds they are not the only abilities she has. She seeks out answers from her Grandmother but find she has secrets, the entire family is

This very intense, dark story will appeal to fans of classic Gothic literature (like me!). I was drawn in from page one, as Alexa's anxiety made me feel her own sense of foreboding and fear. While I could picture this as a black and white film in the Hitchcock tradition, I enjoyed the humorous and sarcastic moments, which brought the reality of the 'here' and 'now' back to Alexa's portrayal of life in her isolated world. Demons, secrets, betrayal - classic psychological terror on an engaging lev ...more

** I received an advance copy of this book and I am reviewing it voluntarily. I’m totally going to buy the next one, though. :) **

“Piercing the Veil” was fun to read. I enjoyed the world Taylor created around Alexa Moore, a young woman who, like most 18-year-olds, wishes for change, but doesn’t quite get what she bargained for. We all know (or will soon know) what it feels like to be on the edge of adulthood and think that you need to change yourself in order to start your adult life. When those

This is a fantastic first book by the author. The writing is wonderful and fast-paced. The Prologue was awesome and a little dark. The following story-line is both interesting and exciting and suited to its YA category. I found the characters well-rounded and real. They show real depth in their development which I like in a book. Overall this was a great read!

This book took a bit to hook me, but it did. While I really liked the prologue, it was the first few following chapters that were slow.
Overall, once it picked up and the plot was moving, it was a solid read.
I'll be watching this author and picking up more of her work.

Good read.

This was an interesting book. It was not predictable in its premise and kept me turning the page to find out what's next. Looking forward to the next book.

This review was very difficult for me to write. The most frustrating thing about this book was that it has SERIOUS potential. I could see this as easily being a hit -- one of those *ohmigoshIcan'twaitforthenextone* books. The author has an undeniable talent for writing.

I normally read the sample on Amazon before agreeing to read the entire book. I ignored my rule this time because after reading only the first few pages of the prologue, I was hooked. My excitement at possibly finding an awesome n

I’m not a reader of fantasy. “Piercing the Veil” was in fact the first book of that genre that I ever read, and I must admit: I approached it with a good amount of skepticism, unsure how the story about discovering magical abilities, places and people would unfold. I was taken by surprise then when I realized that this book at its core is really a coming-of-age story, and it’s so beautifully written that my skepticism flew right out the window.

The main character (MC) Alexa could be summed up wi

I loved it! Completely and utterly loved it! I raced through it and lived every moment and then poof it was over.... I have a love / hate relationship with books that leave me hanging at the end. Hate them because they are over and I have to wait for more but love them because it means they are not over yet.

The characters were not only believable but well thought out and constructed. The plot moved along nicely and didn't leave to many gaping holes which was amazing. Honestly I cannot wait unti

This book was a little slow to start for me, but once I was in the story, I was in for the big ride. The style of writing is very well crafted, with beautiful descriptions that help you get into the scenes instantly. You feel like you’re with the characters, which is always a good sign. Speaking of characters, the main protagonists of this book were very well written, and very different from one another; Alexa was a strong character, and her two mal

I really really enjoyed this book! I cannot wait for the next one! I love the bond between Alexa and her brother and cousins. I also enjoyed all of the twists and turns that the book took and am excited to see what becomes of Alexa and her family in the next book.

I really like this book and all, but the ending literally just made me so angry. I can get over all of the other crap in it and I even enjoyed it even though it took me a while to get into. But the ending killed me.

This was an amazing book, by a fantastic author. The story is exciting, unique, and fast paced. Alexa is strong, sweet, and brave which just adds to the plot. I can not wait until the second book comes out!

I received an advance copy, and I am voluntarily reviewing the book.

Piercing the Veil by Nicole L. Taylor is the first book in The Crusaders Series. The story begins on sixteen year old Alexander’s, or Alexa as she prefers, college graduation day. Young and brilliant, Alexa is ready to leave her small-town home in Maine to find her place in the world; but, her grandmother has other ideas about that. Alexa and brother Serge as well as her two cousins James and Natasha have always been under a ti

This book is quite a page turner. It was definitely not quite what I anticipated, but it was really great nonetheless. I loved Alexa's character. I love the name Alexa! For a debut, it truly a fantastic break into a new book world that has not been visited by many yet. It was not what I expected. In a very good way.

I must admit that it did take me a while to get into this book, but once I

An awesome book!
It took me a while to read it at the beginning, but then I simply couldn't stop reading!
It's a magical young adult book, which can be read by not only young adults :) I really enjoyed it!
Alexa had a very unpleasant experience in relationships and she don't trust people from the first sight..but not all people are the same ;)
What I loved the most was this telepathic communication between Alexa and her brother!
I hope there will be one more book to read!!!!
Thank you for this gorgeou

It’s the little things that matter.

Piercing the Veil has a classic plot: a coming-of-age Lost Princess, complete with family secrets, mysterious powers, and a forbidden first romance. Nicole L. Taylor wraps all of this together with a pinch of darkness and some serious geeking out over Shakespeare. When the plot got going, I was happy to be swept along for the ride.

Unfortunately, it’s the little things that matter. Things like the inconsistent italicisation of pop culture references, or the miss

I enjoyed this book because of all the mystery and family secrets as well as the magical and paranormal parts. I really liked Alexa because of how strong she is even with all these secrets and changes going on, she still manages to keep herself together and not fall to shit. The fact that she has a dark backstory makes her all the more intriguing. The romance between Alexa and Roman I could d

A very well-written romantic fantasy for a YA or NA audience. The prose was clean and elegant; the characters well developed; the world wonderfully built. I loved the familial relationships between Alexa, Serge, Natasha and James, the parade of hot guys after Alexa, and the devious grandmother raising her army of powerful grandchildren with Alexa as the crown jewel. However, Gran doesn't count on Alexa growing to be more powerful than she can handle.

My feelings on this book went up and down. I had a hard time getting into it at the beginning, and it felt kind of slow to get moving. I was almost ready to give up when it suddenly turned around – and then it was impossible to put down. The main character had grown on me at that point, and I could really feel myself relating to her and the struggles she was going through trying to understand all these changes and new information coming into her life. I enjoyed this book but it ends rather abruptly. You have to get the next book to continue the story. That is right a cliffhanger I dislike getting a book that doesn't give some type of closure. This book leaves so many questions. Buy at your own risk. I am annoyed right now so I may not get the next book.

I received a copy of 'Piercing the Veil' by, Nicole Taylor from a Goidreads Giveaway.

I was very pleased with Piercing the Veil, the story reminded me a bit of the Twilight series (minus vampires and plus mages). It kept me intrigued the whole way through. This is the first time I've started a series that was new and had to wait for the next book, I will definitely pick it up when it comes out!

Thank You Nicole Taylor and Goodreads for giving me the opportunity to read this great book and discover

I had no idea this was already out when I requested this from Netgalley but I was given it in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this. It was a nice edition to the YA genre (mages instead of vampires, zombies, et al) and it was a quick read. While most of the story goes along quickly I feel like something was missing at the end that didn't wrap up the events of the book (my fault if this is part of a series) and left a whole host of unanswered questions in regards to the mystery surrounding a
