In a world increasingly dominated by fast food, The Pleasures of Slow Food celebrates heritage recipes, artisan traditions, and the rapid evolution of a movement to make good food a part of everyday life. Slow Food is defined by how it s if it s allowed to ripen before it s harvested, prepared by hand and enjoyed among friends, it s Slow Food. It s a philosophy, a way to farm, a way to cook...a way to live. It s also the name of a 65,000-strong international movement, numbering among its members some of the most distinguished names in the food world. The Pleasures of Slow Food showcases over 60 recipes from the world s most innovative chefs for dishes that feature local handmade ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Premier food writer Corby Kummer also profiles Slow Food s luminaries, such as Italian cheese maker Roberto Rubino and Canadian Karl Kaiser, who makes sweet ice-wine. Pairing fantastic recipes with engaging stories, The Pleasures of Slow Food brings the best of the food world to the kitchen table.
"Slow Foods are mainly peasant foods -- dishes and ingredients that have been prepared the same way for centuries. They are time tasted. They spring directly from regional cultures and cuisines. The change from a disposable society to a sustainable one begins with the first bite. If you care about these things and all their implications, you will want to savor The Pleasures of Slow Food."
This book goes into the history of the Slow Food Movement as well as offering 40 recipes for some of the best food in the world. It honors the handcrafted traditions of passionate food producers and chefs. This is how food was meant to be. Real food using the best ingredients that have been grown or raised as it was done before all these insane methods of adding pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, etc. There are resources at the back of the book. Many of the recipes would accommodate vegetarian or vegan tastes naturally.
The Pesto Alla Genovese and the Tortilla Soup with Pasilla Chilies, Fresh Cheese and Avocado are sublime. It doesn't get much better than this. If you can slow down and spend some time cooking, you will be rewarded with sumptuous food for the body and soul.
This is one to cook from cover to back and with a little luck, that's what I hope to do.
Really fantastic collection of stories of the people currently making the slow food movement possible. Wine, salt, fish, meat, and cheese are included. Also includes some great photography and recipes.
I started reading through this when I was tabling for Slow Food at and event and think that Corby Kummer does a good job of explaining the movement. The photos and recipes are beautiful as well.
