This edition of the NIV is good for first-timers since its very readable and the New Testament is the best place to start. I would move on to an edition with a formal equivalence approach when study and memorisation come into play.

The problem with NIV is that certain passages concerning faith and works are conveniently translated so you won't notice the problems they create for Sola Fide. So while I'd recommend NIV for its readability, its very much a Protestant translation.
