A camera can’t steal your soul—but a demon can! Mark Yarren suspects a demon has found a way around the spell his great-grandfather cast to prevent demons sucking souls through the camera’s lens. Digital photography dangerously omits the silver wash that was photography’s century-old defence against Hell.
Mark is Hollywood royalty, descended from the early Hollywood stars: the studio bosses and directors, the producers and actresses. Now he lives alone in his palatial Beverly Hills estate.
Well, not quite alone.
Clancy Ramirez is back! She’s tried life in New York, in Iceland, and in Hawaii, but she missed California. She missed the grumbling roar of the San Andreas Fault with its leagues-deep molten geology. Clancy is a geomage and she can make the earth shake—or grow still. But California isn’t her territory. She has no place intruding or tapping its energy.
But a demon shackled for a century is breaking free, and Collegium rules, old heartaches and strained family loyalties will break, too.

*** I've curated my bookshelf to share books which I hope readers of Caldryn Parliament will enjoy. With the older books, please be aware that they are a product of their times and read with care.
I love the fact that I can read this series out of order. There are a couple characters from book 1 but this story is centered around a new set of characters living in LA. I really enjoyed these characters and got sucked into their lives. I loved how sweet Clancy is but her brother seems to be self centered and spoiled. Although, I do like that the books have different MCs, I think I would enjoy reading more books with Clancy and Mark.
I really liked reading about Clancy and Mark's characters in Hollywood Demon, the latest instalment in the Collegium series by author Jenny Schwartz. Clancy and Mark's rekindled friendship from years past, and newly simmering attraction mixed with their joint efforts to eradicate the mysterious demon were entertaining from the start. A few curly moments and surprises in the story along with some twists that were attention grabbing. Appearances from characters in previous books in the Collegium series added a few more memorable moments in an already entertaining story. A story that was enjoyable from one page to the next. Disgraced and dismissed due to circumstances beyond her control, Clancy Ramirez left the Collegium and her career behind for the solace of her home in Hollywood, California. She can control herself long enough not to overstep the rules of the territory, can’t she? That promise waivers when she’s barely stepped on home turf and senses a demon lurking near the front gates. Duty bound to follow its trail, Clancy runs into her old teenage crush, missing the demon by seconds. She soon learns Mark, whilst not strong enough magically to control the demon, has crossed paths with it before – in the accident that took his fiancée’s life. When Clancy discovers the truth behind the accident, she understand Mark’s obsession with trapping the demon, but a man with very little powers of his own and a geomage who can’t control her magical strength have little chance of capturing a high level and very powerful demon, one that believes manipulating Clancy and Mark all but guarantees its freedom. And it will use anyone and anything to get what it wants.
Now I’m not a geomage, but I am an earth sign and I found it quite eerie in the first couple of chapters to discover how similar Clancy was to myself – to the point where I wondered if there was a hidden camera around. Not that I’m going to admit to which aspects of Clancy’s personality traits I claimed. J What I will admit to is how much I loved the story and the characters. Flawed, yet humble and caring, I loved the family dynamics played out between Clancy and her brother, the geomage in charge of California. Once again, Ms Schwartz made me change my mind regarding how I felt about certain characters, especially when Clancy literally ran into her teenage crush, Mark. I love the way both Clancy and Mark faced their personal demons to claim their true selves.
Clancy Ramirez is a geomage, but her power works shamanistically - more from intuition, than science. That matters, because the quantitative markers are different, and the mastery is system specific.
Her brother, Jeremy, excels at the scientific approach and has been lauded for the same; which has made him an a$$.
Mark Yarren is a more traditional magic user, but, it’s not his generation to shine. That doesn’t mean his magical instincts are less, just that his access to power is constrained. His great-great-grandfather came up with a protection spell that has held demonic possession at bay for nearly a century. But time isn’t static, and neither are demons.
Unfortunately, because of Mark’s low magic level, and the smugness that has pervaded the Collegium, his concerns about an active demonic presence in Los Angeles has been ignored. Clancy is with Mark when the demon manifests, and realizes he is onto something.
It takes far too long to garner the attention they need, and for the experts to heed his warnings; and, even when they arrive, they are so slow on the uptake. But, eventually, they become convinced.
Clancy and Mark are largely on their own in dealing with the problem and complications, but at least they learn to work together. And that makes all the difference.
Hollywood Demon is the sixth book in The Collegium Series by Jenny Schwartz. With this series, I discovered a fun, fast-moving mix of urban fantasy, romance, and action, set in a world where supernatural beings - from demon hunters to dragon knights - live alongside humans. Over the seven books, you meet a wide range of characters, each with their own quirks, loyalties, and love stories, all tied together by the mysterious and sometimes politically messy Collegium. There are magical battles and plenty of supernatural drama, but the heart of the stories lies in the relationships - friendships, romances, and even the rivalries - and the way trust and betrayal shape them. The Collegium itself is a great backdrop, acting as both a safe haven and a source of trouble. Each book has its own self-contained adventure and romance, but they all connect to paint a bigger picture of a world that keeps expanding. Perfect for readers who like their fantasy worlds bustling with magic, danger, and a touch of sass. Happy Reading…
While this is a stand-alone story, and only one I've read, it is entertaining, loving, exciting and a great read. Clancy and Mark seem to be a great couple with all the ties and baggage of family. Trying to live life to be whole, healthy and happy, all while trying to let family do the same, and still "stepping" on toes. I liked this story, storyline, and the writing. May need to start at the beginning though😊
Sometimes your belief is all you have and Mark had to go it alone for many years. Clancy came home defeated but right away she felt connected to Mark and her belief in herself grew. Lots of emotions are played out in this story of family drama and a demon who's figured out a way around the spell keeping them out of the human realm.
This novel deals overwhelmingly with new characters and magic, so is okay to read first if you didn’t start at the beginning of the series. Family dynamics and the ways we limit ourselves are the central themes, while the plot involves danger, betrayal, and romance. Fun modern day fantasy.
This series is all pretty bad (I like later Jenny Schwartz books much better), but this one is the worst. Clancy is pretty drippy; geo-mage power is terribly described (still have no idea what or how it works); the romance is forced; and no one seems to learn anything.
I enjoyed this book, just as I did the previous ones in the series. Having read the previous ones did make this one more enjoyable but I think it could also be read as a standalone.
Have I mentioned that I love discovering all of these new people with each installment? I also love how each one seems to cover a different kind of magic. It's been fun reading this world!
