Why oh why do people have to ruin a perfectly good vamp novel by sticking sparkly Twilight shit in it???? I loved the world that was created and the mystery of who kidnapped and tortured the MC, but ..... what's with this "be still my beating heart" bullshit?

Survivor is the third instalment in Amanda Pillar’s Graced series and is another fast chapter within the series.
Human guard Billie Young is a survivor. After being kidnapped by two vampires, her throat slit and then left for dead, Billie miraculously survived but six months later she is still scarred--emotionally and physically--from the attack. Distrustful as a result of what she endured, Billie is determined to find her attackers and bring them to justice. Vere Radcliffe is a vampire and a spy. Returning from a year abroad, Vere is tasked by his King to investigate a string of attacks on humans, something he quickly connects to the alluring human guard Vere has recently met. As their two investigations overlap, Vere and Billie must quickly discover who the culprit is as those who attacked have Billie in their sights once again and this time she won’t get away alive.
After reading the previous story Captive which was clearly a novella, I headed into Survivor anticipating a full length novel, but Survivor is more of a novella than a full length novel also, although it’s set after the events of Graced rather than before like Captive which was a prequel. That being said, Survivor is a fast novel and a very quick read. I felt the story as a little too rushed than I would have preferred but I felt the storyline itself was interesting.
Survivor introduces readers to Billie and Vere, two new characters we have yet to meet. Billie is a human woman who was recently the victim of an attack that almost cost her her life while Vere is a vampire able to pass easily as a human and who is a spy for the King. Vere was somewhat softer than any of the other vampires we’ve previously met and was quite smitten with Billie as soon as he met her.
It was sweet seeing their relationship develop normally; coffee date, dinner---it was quite down to earth even as Pillar moved them swiftly due to the shortness of the story. I liked that Vere didn’t see humans as cattle and wanted to free the slaves. It made his attraction to Billie more believable and understandable.
Easy to read, Survivor was a decent inclusion in the series. I’m ready to read the next instalment straight away to see what Amanda Pillar does next.

Graced-ful
I love these books. I like the fact that they are companion books so you meet some of the same characters in the original setting but get involved in someone else's life. Follow Billie throughout her life as a city guard ..it's ups and downs dealing with attackers, vampires and the king

I loved this more than the first novel. The writing is smart, sexy, and focuses on a damaged, broken survivor of an attack. She is so determined to overcome and work with her disablement that I overlook the similarities between this and the other one I read.

A very enjoyable but short read that was both original and exciting. I liked the characters and the overall storyline. Though I didn’t realise it was book 3 in a series, I was able to read this one without feeling like I’ve missed something (can be read alone!)

Survivor is the second novella released in Amanda Pillar's Graced universe (following on from the original novel, Graced, and a previous novella, Captive). The world of the Graced books is dark fantasy/urban fantasy/paranormal romance; it is populated by humans, Graced (humans with psychic abilities), vampires and weres, all living in a complex society.
Survivor takes the focus away from the Graced, and is centred instead upon the City Guard of Pinton (who are mostly human) and their interactions with vampires. Specifically, we follow Billie Young, a Guard who was captured, tortured and left for dead by unknown vampires. By chance, she survived, albeit scarred and with injuries which have left her physically disabled and in chronic pain. As she discovers that her abduction was only one of a series of such incidents in Pinton, her path crosses with that of Vere Radcliffe, vampire and King's spy. As they both investigate the crimes, their paths are drawn together in more ways than one.
I absolutely adore the Graced universe, and I believe that the world Pillar has created is one that is unique and fascinating, even when it draws on well-worn tropes. This novella doesn't expand overmuch on the universe as established throughout the previous instalments, but for those who have read the previous novel and novella, you will find as much to enjoy here as you did in both of them. I was particularly pleased by the appearance of several characters from the previous works, most particularly by Alice the human coroner, who remains one of my favourite characters.
Billie, to me, was the most interesting viewpoint character. She deals with physical limitations and chronic pain due to the injuries she sustained during her abduction, and yet she still continues to try to do her job as a Guard. Of particular note to me as a reader and person who deals with a chronic pain condition, Pillar never presented Billie as any kind of "inspiration porn" or someone to be pitied, but simply as someone who was trying to live her life as she wanted.
Vere is the other viewpoint character, and for me, he didn't come across quite as strongly as Billie (which may, of course, have a lot to do with my own personal empathy and resonance with Billie). I was interested in learning more about his story, especially his work as a spy, and found that this novella didn't delve as deeply as I would have liked into this. This, of course, is likely due simply to the length constraints of working in the novella form, and I hope that we'll get to see more of Vere and his story in future instalments. I especially liked the fact that Vere in particular, never pitied Billie for her injury or pain, but always let her take the path (literally and figuratively) that she wanted to - I wish there were more relationships in fiction like this that dealt with disabilities and chronic illnesses.

As with Vere's story, I found myself wanting more of both of these story threads. The romance moved just that little bit faster that I would have liked as a reader, and the mystery felt as though it was solved just that little bit too easily. Again, this is likely just a result of the format, and not any real criticism of the work. Both storylines are resolved in a satisfying manner, despite the rushed nature of it.
There is one aspect to the storyline late in the novella which some readers may find problematic (I don't want to go into specifics, but I does relate to the trope of magical cures). For me, it wasn't a problem, specifically because of the general attitudes that Pillar has written in her characters in relation to how they deal with disability and chronic illness (and it's also made clear that the cure wasn't necessarily the intended effect). It's worth noting, however, since some readers may want to steer clear because of specific issues with reading that kind of storyline, no matter how well written).
Overall, my main complaint with Survivor is the same as what I had for Captive, in that I wish that it had been expanded into a full novel, simply because I would have liked more time in this world, and specifically with Billie and Vere. If you haven't read Graced and Captive, I believe that you could easily read Survivor on its own, since it deals with vampire tropes that many readers of speculative fiction won't have any issue with, but I believe that in order to get more enjoyment out of it, you would do well to read the previous two instalments first. Pillar, an award-winning editor, has created a fascinating urban fantasy world in the Graced universe, and I hope that her fiction starts to get the attention that it richly deserves.

Survivor is the second of Amanda Pillar's Graced novellas to come out this year. The prequel novella, Captive, didn't quite work for me but Survivor hit all the right notes.
As the title suggests, Billie is a survivor--a fighter and an optimist, though the latter is somewhat subsumed by her grouchiness towards Vere. Her attackers left her with plenty of scars and a limp that gives her chronic pain. While she's determined not to let this slow her down, she's still sensible about the limitations it puts on her life. Billie has stepped away from active duty on the City Guard, realising that her injuries would put a partner at potential risk, but that doesn't stop her from seeking out the culprits responsible for the attack.
It's Billie's stubborn independence that attracts Vere to her in the first place. The way he follows her around at first could seem patronising or puppyish, but it never comes across that way. Instead, Vere's curiosity and respect for Billie shines through. He is genuinely considerate, though how he managed to develop that quality in his family remains a mystery. In fact, given Vere's colouring and weak vampire traits, I found myself wondering whether there was more to Vere's background than the story revealed.
I don't usually get along with serial novellas, finding they don't have enough space to properly deal with all the elements they're juggling. I never felt that way with Survivor. It is set in the same city as Graced and several minor characters make reappearances. However, both Billie and Vere are new characters and their story stands on its own. There are one or two places where repercussions from Graced can be seen--which was something I loved. But overall, Survivor makes a reasonably good introduction to the world and is littered with characters I'm looking forward to learning more about (the captain of the city guard springs to mind).
The romance between Billie and Vere was sweet and balanced nicely with the investigation elements. Sex took place off-screen, making it a good story for readers who find that uncomfortable.
There was one or two aspects of the ending I found a bit disappointing, but they are difficult to discuss without spoilers.
However, overall, I very much enjoyed Survivor and hope to see more stories set in this world.

Pillar once again has written an enthralling novella within the 'Graced' series.
Romance, murder, spies and politics collide in this supernatural world that Pillar has crafted so perfectly.
Our main protagonist is Billie; a human city guard who is impacted in her day to day life by her permanent injuries resulting from her kidnapping and attempted murder. However, she is not a cripple who is reliant on those around her. Billie is a strong resilient character and it is refreshing that Pillar does not portray her as a damsel in distress.
We then meet our second protagonist Vere, a high born vampire who also happens to be a spy for the King Johan, also a vampire. Vere is an intriguing character and the reader is instantly smitten with him.
Although this book is only the length of a novella, Vere's courting of Billie does not feel rushed and the reader is left satisfied with the pace of the romance.
Vere's life as a spy is not discussed in detail throughout the novella, however, this provides further opportunity for Pillar to create a prequel novella on this character.
The plot continues at a steady pace throughout ensuring the reader turns page after page with anticipation.
Readers will be left wanting more long after they have turned the final page.

I really enjoyed this book. Amanda Pillar has done a fabulous job with this very interesting and well put together story. When you have a number vampires in a story, and a couple of them are intent on killing people, it definitely makes for a great reading. The characters are great and I certainly enjoyed the plot from start to finish. Billy would no doubt be kicking herself for taking a shortcut through the alley after leaving the pub. Being snatched by a vampire certainly isn’t on anyone’s wish list, especially now that she has a broken hip and left arm. Getting stabbed in the throat and thrown in the river wasn’t the best outcome. Billie was lucky that someone was able to pluck her out of the water and get her to the hospital in time. It took her a few months to get back to work, however it is going to take her a while to get over the physical and mental scars from being kidnapped by a couple of vampires. Billie meets Vere Radcliff at his father’s house when she is delivering a letter, and she is quite taken with how good looking he is. Although Billie doesn’t think she would have much of a chance with him being an Aristo. She would probably run for the hills if she knew he was a vampire, however because his mum wasn’t one, he has much lighter eyes than a normal vampire. So she is quite surprised when he invites her to coffee, and even more surprised when he kisses her afterwards. Dr Alice Reive arrives at Billies work with a file showing another female has died with exactly the same injuries as Billie received. King Johan wants Vere to look into the recent murder of the girl and find the Vampires responsible, and take care of them for good. It’s always exciting to find a new Author that entertains you, and I certainly will be looking for more from this Author in the future.

Billie, a Pinton City Guard was kidnapped by a pair of vampires who broke her right hip/thigh and her left arm. When they went to dispose of her they took her to the Thyme, slit her throat, and threw her in. If it weren't for a garbage scow worker hearing her scream and fall into the water, they would have succeeded. 6 months after being in the hospital, she was saddled with a desk job because her leg had started healing before they dumped her. Her regular position was to go after rogue vampires. Her boss had her deliver an official letter from the king to the house of an Aristo.
She met the annoying Vere at the stairs to the home, and he wouldn't leave her alone and insisted on following her home. She did not let him. but he found her constantly and took her for coffee and dinner, which was really breakfast for others because she worked the night shift. All vampires had eyes that were shades of purple, so she trusted Vere to help her find the vamps that tried to kill her.
Was it smart or safe to trust a stranger after her ordeal? you have to read this novella to find out.
She met the annoying Vere at the stairs to the home, and he wouldn't leave her alone and insisted on following her home. She did not let him. but he found her constantly and took her for coffee and dinner, which was really breakfast for others because she worked the night shift. Billie, a young woman, had been kidnapped and tortured by vampires. She still bears the scars of that. She gets moved to desk duty where she ends up having to take an official letter to the home of a vampire which is about the last thing in the world she wants to do.
Another character is Vera Radcliffe, a vampire and one she will have to deal with. This all makes for a fairly promising start to a series.
Another character is Vera Radcliffe, a vampire and one she will have to deal with. This all makes for a fairly promising start to a series.

A surprisingly good and exciting read for a such short novel. I was enjoying it so much I didn't want to reach the end so quick. I wanted more!! The plot had plenty of scope for it to extend into a longer story. I loved all the suspense and romance.
The Graced series is proving to be a very enjoyable and addictive series!

This novella, set in the Graced world, is another great outing from writer Amanda Pillar. If you like a strong heroine, vampires, action and romance, you won't be let down. Technically this book follows the novel 'Graced' but you could easily read it first if you'd like to try a novella size sample of Pillar's writing. Enjoyed!

Cracking read
Another great story in Pillar's genre-bending Graced series, which mixes a bit of fantasy, a bit of dystopia and a bit of paranormal romance into something really interesting. Awesome world-building, sassy characters and snappy dialogue.

This was a great addition to the Graced world. The characters are so likable and I often forget they are fictional, they seem so real. I did not want it to end and can't wait to find out what happens in Pillar's next Graced story.
