“A sense of duty is useful in work but offensive in personal relations. People wish to be liked, not to be endured with patient resignation.” Bertrand Russell

Book 1: Miss Darcy’s New Companion: in the Jane Austen Inspired Novellas Collection:

This was a cute, clean, short story about a Wetherspoon family with eleven children and turbulent roller coaster finances. At the present time… finances were down, thus, forcing his children into service. Lucy Wetherspoon became a paid companion to Miss Geor

There were echoes of other stories for me as I read another “companion to Miss Darcy” tale. (I had recently read two other such tales.) Then there is Jane Eyre, a governess who falls in love with a rich man of society, a man who is thought to be destined to wed another, which came to mind as I read this novella. In the JAFF library there is a tale of the sins (how-be-it different sins) of the fathers, which is brought to mind in this tale as we read how both Alexander Farrington, The Ea

Ms Darcy's companion

Wonderful continuation of P&P, but the emphasis is on Ms Darcy and her new companion. We see how this lady try's to get Georgiana to come out of her shell. She's with her at all the social events and as such is thrown into a sphere that she once was in but left because of loss of fortune. The story progresses with some angst but is in the end full of romance. Delightful story. A definite must read.

Miss Darcy's New Companion is the first book in the Jane Austen Sequel books, a Pride and Prejudice Variation by the incomparable Cheryl Bolen.

The story begins when the newly wed couple Mr Darcy and Lizzy Bennet are preparing to go on their wedding journey. They have hired a companion for Darcy's young sister Georgiana. The woman in question is Miss Lucy Weatherspoon, the second eldest daughter of 10 unmarried children from the Weatherspoon family. The children have all been separated while thei

This fun novella is the first in a series of Pride and Prejudice variations. It’s been years since I read Pride and Prejudice, but I watch the A&E, Colin Firth version of it about once a year. It’s one of my favorites. Cheryl Bolen is an excellent regency storyteller with a historical voice and cadence that complements Jane Austen’s.

This story is filled with wonderful details that kept the political and social mores of the period real for me. Where else can I get a sweet romance along with

I always enjoy a story from Cheryl Bolen’s. Her writing style exemplifies proper form of address among Polite Society druing the Regency era. Her descriptive scenes actually transport me back in time.

The sensibility of young women, their innocence and proper decorous upbringing is well-defined, making it quite believable when even with a construed slight indiscretion a woman or man can find themselves obliged to marry, even though the young woman is still an innocent. They may even find themselv

The newlywed Darcys are preparing to take a wedding trip. Elizabeth has been talking with Miss Lucy Wetherspoon, age 25, who is being considered as a companion to Miss Georgiana Darcy, age 16.

Lucy’s father was a scholar at Oxford, but he did not have a head for money and ended up involved in some bad investments. As it happens, Lucy had been jilted which is why she is still single. Lucy has been very well educated by her father and even speaks six different languages.

The newlywed Darcy’s are off on their extended honeymoon and Georgiana is being well cared for by staff and the newest member of the household Miss Lucy Wetherspoon. Lucy was raised with wealth long gone and serving as the companion to Georgiana is no discomfort as it provides her with a fresh student to share the world with and most importantly a room and bed of her own. What Lucy never expected was the neighbor Alexander Farrington, the Earl of Fane to become so distracting.

Lovely to follow Elizabeth and Darcy after Pride and Prejudice ends. This novella is about Miss Darcy and her new companion after the newlyweds leave for Italy. It's a well told story of improper matches falling in love, and the road to that happening. Ms Bolen weaves a fun tale in the Austin format, not disappointed at all and now on to the next in this short series.
