Wow, what a surprise! Super-emotional, oh-so-hot and gorgeously romantic, this book absolutely captivated me and I loved every moment of it!

5 stars!

This is my first read by Beverly Preston, and I loved it! Her writing is emotive and descriptive without being overly sappy, and she sucked me right into the story. I feel like I’ve been on a journey, and I read this book in one sitting unable to put it down. This is book #2 in the Beyond the Preston Family series, but it’s easily a standalone. Obviously I haven’t read any of the other books and I was able to follow along fine – though I’m now adding all of the earlier books to my tbr because I want more!!

Hope Tidwell is a successful, independent and single-minded career woman. Her enviable job as a sommelier sees her travelling the world tasting wine and negotiating big-budget deals. Her itinerant lifestyle leaves her no time for a relationship – not that she wants one – and she has a collection of men around the world that she calls up whenever she’s in town for no-strings, guilt-free sex. She’s living her dream.

Antonio Giovanni is one of Hope’s hook ups, and the one she feels the strongest connection with. He is a winemaker at his family’s vineyard in the rolling hills of Tuscany, and through their years together they have become great friends as well as lovers – but neither of them have ever tried (or given any indication of wanting to try) for anything more.

For most people, relationships were as natural as breathing, on the contrary, Hope and Antonio were two players who mastered in the art of seduction and the fear of emotional intimacy.

I admit that the beginning of this book took me on a bit of a ride that I was in no way prepared for. I was expecting one thing and got something completely different, but OMG did it set up for something truly special! The feels were intense as we get got to know Hope and see her deal with some huge shifts in her life, and when she finds herself at rock bottom, she finds the strength to pick herself up and start over – in Italy and right near Antonio.

OMG, this love story is beautiful! Hope is understandably scared of a relationship, but she finds herself drawn in by Antonio and the bond that they have always shared. Of course he’s gorgeous, successful and sexy as all hell, but more than that he is her rock, and somebody that she knows she can open up to and depend upon. And amidst banter filled teasing, sweet and romantic moments, soul-baring conversations and passionate encounters, the man who has loved her secretly for years sets about breaking down her walls.

“Having feelings isn’t a weakness. It just means you’re human.”
“I know,” she lied, averting her gaze to the window.
“You don’t fool me, Hope.” He curled his finger beneath her chin, bringing her focus back to him. “This is the best I’ve ever had…the best I’ve ever felt in my life.”

Antonio is a bit of an alpha, but he’s also gentle, understanding, loving and affectionate and I just adored the way he cared for and supported Hope. He knows her so well, knows exactly what she can handle and what she isn’t ready for yet, and even though the book is written in entirely in her POV, I could see everything that he was feeling. The way he treated Hope, the way he spoke to her, and the way he wore his heart on his sleeve for her absolutely melted me. And holy hell, the man is hot! He is perfect!

“You need to trust me, bella.”
“I do trust you, Antonio.”
“I want you to trust in this. In us.” Antonio took her hand and placed it on his beating chest. He laid his palm over her heart. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Hope has been through a lot in her life, with more challenges to come, and her fear of love, intimacy, and losing control of her carefully ordered life are very real. But having said that, there is no angst or stupid drama in this book. Of course there’s some drama, but it fits the story, and makes sense. There are challenges that need to be overcome, and the drama that comes with that all ties in to the character development and is honest, realistic and emotional. I could understand where both Hope and Antonio were at and I never got annoyed or wanted to smack anybody (and that is, sadly, a rare thing!). Hope’s journey is beautifully written, and I could feel and empathise with everything that she was going through, and I just loved her as a character. And her and Antonio together were something truly special.

I feel like I was taken on a journey with Hope’s story and I finished this book with a massive smile on my face. I laughed, I cried (OMG, did I cry!), and I fell in mad love, easily lost in the story, and eager to check out more of this author’s work.

5 stars.

I have to admit it took me a little bit to connect with this story. I think because the romance didn't start until around the 40% mark and also the beginning of the story was really heartbreaking. Antonio the hero is amazing. He definitely will make you swoon. Not only is hot, he is so sweet and goes after what he wants. Hope the heroine is strong and very independent. Not usually my type of heroine but the more I read the more I liked her. Overall an enjoyable read.

4 Italian Stars!

What an emotional read! I was shocked and heartbroken over the plot twist, which shall stay a secret from me! You need to FEEL the impact as you are reading.

Believe it or not this was my first book by this author! I'm sure there were spoilers from the other books but I was able to follow along without missing anything. I will for sure be going back and starting at the beginning!

If you are looking for an emotion packed HOT ITALIAN read, look no further! (I kept this review short and to the point, I didn't want to spoil it for anyone, and to talk about the book, I would had to give spoilers.)

I simply adore everything that Ms. Preston writes and I always look forward to new books from her. I can tell you that without a doubt, this book did not disappoint me one single bit.

To be honest, I really thought I knew what I was getting into with this book, at least initially I thought I did. The beginning of the book sets up a very interesting storyline and I was like, “okay, so this is what this book is going to be about.” But I questioned how The Italian would fit into the long term storyline and then boom… in one swift move, Preston pulled the emotional rug out from under me and then it all started to fall into place.

Another beautiful read by Beverly Preston! A heart-felt story like no other. An extraordinary story of love, not only romantic but love of family. I've always admired this author's ability to engage the reader from the first page to the last. This book is no different. She has managed to bump the emotion meter up about 10 NOTCHES!! I could not put this book down. The story is so very captivating. For those of you familiar with the author's work, you will be thrilled with the appearance of characters from previous books. They are wonderfully woven throughout the book that adds such strength to the story. I absolutely loved it!!

An exceptionally well-written story of a couple who called upon each other when the time was right.
Beverly twisted this tale into a love story that hit my soul.
Antonio and Hope are far from perfect but they are perfect together!
A twist here, a turn there and an unexpected adventure brought several shades of tears to my eyes.
What a different kind of ride.
Loved it!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Holding Onto Hope is the second book in Beverly Preston's Beyond The Matthew Family Series. It can be read as a standalone.

Hope Tidwell travels the world looking for the finest wines. She is very dedicated to her job and refuses to let relationships get in the way of her career. She abides by a strict set of rules. No ties. No expectations. No risks. Those rules work just fine for Antonio Giovanni. He is tall dark and handsome. He is also an Italian winemaker. The rules work until one day they don't. Hope's sister asks her to do the one thing she has sworn never to do and she can't say no. Can she? Hope never had any intention of going down this road. But, unanticipated and devastating events throw her life so off course she can't even recognize her world anymore. Will Hope be able to do the one thing that terrifies her the most?

From the first page of this book I was sucked into the world Beverly Preston has created in Holding Onto Hope. I absolutely loved these characters. There are so many feels in this book. I don't think there was an emotion that I didn't feel while reading it. My heart broke. I cheered these characters on. I might have swooned a time or two. It will keep you on your toes and I love when a book has me right there in that most special spot. Antonio is just so .......I'm not even sure what the right word is for him but you will fall in love with him. He's a little alpha and a whole lot of caring. He's got to be one of the most perfect male characters a girl could ever want to read about. He had me from the beginning. Hope though is scared of relationships but Antonio has always been there for her through the years. I loved that they were friends first and seeing Hope's walls falls is just absolutely amazing.

This is my first time reading a book by Beverly Preston but it won't be my last. Holding Onto Hope is more like watching a movie playing in your head than it is a book your reading. You do not want to miss this book. It's absolutely amazing.

Beverly Preston has been one of my favorite authors since day one and her 1st book will always have a special place in my heart and so will all of the Mathews family.
The Italian is another perfection not to be missed. These characters make you fall in love with them since page 1. When Antonio tells Hope "Stay" I swooned right there.
Of course it has heartbreaking and I cried but it's also funny, hot, emotional, romantic and did I say hot?
Hope & Antonio..... I loved their chemistry and their love and how they ended up having their own HEA.
Another fantastic book Beverly.

The Italian was definitely a winner!
The story of Antonio Giovanni and Hope Tidwell deals with the "open" relationship that is shared between the two and the lives that they live and what made them that way!
Antonio is a playboy. He knows how to love them. Leave them. And make them continue to want more. Antonio keeps his feelings and desires to himself because he doesn't want to show any weakness.
Hope has lived he life taking care of her sister, working hard to advance, and keeping her heart under wraps. She has lived through a lot of pain and she is determined to keep everything she loves protected.
When life takes an unexpected turn, Hope is forced to make some changes to her life and change what her life plans were. She begins to think of others and her relationships with others are affected. Hope grows mentally, physically, and it is for the better.

The Italian... It managed to take me through many feelings. I was angry, upset, sad (even had tears!) I became happy when the characters cheered & it was a true feel-good story.
I have to admit that when an author can take me through all of those emotions, and still keep me reading, it is definitely a winner!

Not surprising that "The Italian" would join my list of all time favorites. Beverly Preston has this amazing way of whisking you off to these wonderful places where her stories take place and you get to become part of it all.
The emotions in "The Italian" were so raw and real ... at one point I actually put the book down thinking I couldn't pick it back up... there was no way my just shattered heart could handle one more word of this story. I took a few moments to compose myself and dove back in.
Having read every other book in "The Mathews Family Series" before this, I decided to trust where Beverly Preston was about to take me. I am thankful I did. She wove a beautifully written adventure that completely put my heart back together piece by piece and even added a few to help it grow.
This story is full of emotion ... Full of HOT and steamy ... Full of love and passion ... Full of characters that you would love to be friends with in real life.
I give this read five ginormous juicy stars!

What a heartwarming, emotional and intriguing read.

Once I started this book I could not put it down. I didn't even get out of my jammies all day. :-) Beverly Preston has a way with words that pulls you in and allows you to see her vision clearly.

This is a story about family, trust, love and living a full life. It's about two sisters who were neglected and then abandoned by their mother and how they were affected throughout their lives because of that neglect. It's about a love so strong that it changes the course of one sisters life so completely.
There is so much life and love in this story. I don't want to give any spoilers. Just know you will need your reading nook and some tissues for this fantastic book. I give this one a HUGE FIVE STARS
I was given an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.

This was a very emotional read (heartbreaking in the beginning) and the plot twist surprised me. When I started reading it, I thought I knew what to expect, or at least some possibles scenarios. But I was mistaken!

Although it was a bit cheesy sometimes, I enjoyed it a lot and Hope was a gret heroine, she's strong and very independent and Antonio is a very understanding partner, he will definitely make you swoon ;)

I loved it. The real drama and angst came early in the book. But what followed was by no means boring. Typos galore but the story was well crafted and I was in love with all the characters. There is a small part of the book that involves the extended Matthews family (not including Tracy who figures prominently).

Holding onto Hope is a heartwarming story about love and loss. It’s a true journey in learning to rewrite the plans of your life, realizing we don’t always have the answers, and sometimes we don’t need them. Ms. Preston is a goto author for me. I fell in love with her descriptive writing style in book one. This brood has become to feel like my own family, each installment getting better and better. Through her books I’ve gotten to travel the world, and she’s renewed my hope that good things sometimes do happen to good people.

The whole family is back, but Holding onto Hope focuses on the strikingly independent Master Sommelier Hope Tidwell. She’s a woman with a plan. She knows what she wants and doesn’t need anyone to make her happy, until she does. Tragedy strikes, leaving her numb and her life in upheaval. In walks the sinfully sexy Antonio Giovanni, knocking her world off it’s axis. This is the beautiful love story of two people who realize compromise isn’t always a dirty word. It’s a sweet contemporary romance full of intense attraction and some damn good sexy times. It’s about the strength and the love of family.

"Sometimes, love begins from some of our most difficult of tragedies. I think it’s God’s way of giving us blessings we won’t ever take for granted."

This absolutely gets a five star recommendation from me, as does the entire Mathews Family series. These books are a journey for your soul where the final destination is always love.

Read this book.

Well written. Hope's unexpected emotional struggle is honest with real fears. The storyline has a bit of a twist. Anotonio is gentle, patient, and quiet which doesn't fit with the "playboy" persona portrayed in the beginning of the book. Overall, I enjoyed the story, but I wished for a bit for "angst" and difficulty in Antonio and Hope's relationship. It seemed a bit "easy." I would recommend this book.

Oh my heavens ....I do love The Italian...a.k.a Antonia !
We the readers had the privilege of becoming acquainted with him in JC's story. Antonio is certainly a man you will not soon forget. He is tall, dark , handsome.. that should be enough but now top it with suave, sophisticated and caring . Ms. Preston certainly knows how to write us a leading man.
Hope is a world renowned sommelier . She does not answer to anyone and certainly does not need a man to compete her world, although she doesn't mind if they warm her bed occasionally.
Hope and Antonio's worlds cross paths many times over several years. The days they spend together are always unforgettable , but no ties , no commitment that's their deal . It is what they both want...or is it? Hope is pleasantly surprised that each time she returns to Antonio's family vineyard that he is still an eligible bachelor .
Hope is taken on a journey that she never thought she would find herself traveling. She is a strong independent women never in need of anyone to help her but now Antonio appears when she finds herself in the most need.
Fate has a strange way of bring two souls together when they need it the most!
Loved the story of Hope and Antonio .

Hope Tidwell is all about control. She controls every aspect of her life, especially her dalliances. She’s not a long-term relationship kind of girl because she can’t allow someone else to dictate how to feel, what to want, or what to expect. Since getting herself and her sister, Faith, away from their hellish upbringing and their selfish mother, Hope has done her best to protect her sister from the cruelties of the world and she’s also worked her ass off to not have to rely on someone else, especially a man, for any part of her life. Hope has set clear boundaries in her life, and she refuses to allow anyone to get past her defenses, especially Antonio Giovanni, the tall, dark, and handsome Italian man who she finds herself going back to and giving him her body each time they’re in the same place.

It’s understandable why Hope is the guarded person that she is and the fact that she refuses to go outside her comfort zone allows her to experience life on her terms without anyone letting her down or asking something of her that she can’t give them. But the one person who holds her heart is her sister Faith, and Hope would do absolutely anything for her, which is why Hope finds herself in the situation that she does in the story and the choices she makes leave her in unchartered territory consumed with fear and uncertainty but also experiencing something that she never would have if she hadn’t willingly taken a leap of faith and put her heart in the hands of people who seem to know exactly what Hope needs and who promise to be there every step of the way despite Hope’s trepidations of the future.

Antonio Giovanni appears to be nothing more than a playboy, breaking hearts everywhere he goes, always making himself available for his tri-annual romps with Hope. But Antonio is more than the man his brother and readers perceive him to be, and Beverly Preston does an amazing job of showcasing the man he is truly is when Hope takes a job in his family’s business, and as Antonio transforms Hope’s heart, he also becomes a man who willingly puts himself in a position to get hurt…to fall in love and have his heart broken because the boundaries that were once established no longer matter, which is exactly why every aspect of who Antonio and Hope are to each other scares the hell out of both of them.

Every story that Beverly Preston writes is an emotional journey where deep loss as well as life-changing love abounds. There’s not one of Preston’s stories that I haven’t cried while reading because she has a way of illustrating life’s imperfect moments and making them the deciding factors in the lives of her characters and their futures.

Hope’s journey to recover from her past and heal from her present is not an easy one; in fact, it tears her apart and forces her to lose the one thing that she’s always had to have – control. But what she experiences with Antonio and his family and friends is something that changes every aspect of Hope’s life, and even though it sends her spiraling and makes her question who she is and what she truly wants, the end result may not be what Hope ever intended, but it’s actually the outcome that frees her from the pain and fear that has surrounded her heart for far too long.

This book was beautiful. As with a few of Beverly's previous works in this world, it had the emotional destruction followed by the beautiful healing. I cried and debated just giving up, but in the end it was a beautiful journey and it was worth it to see Hope's ending.

Sometimes you start a book and you think you know where it is going to go. You know who is going to end up with who and the likely how. I SWORE I had it all figured out with this one. I did.

I was wrong.

and then maybe right.  You'll see.

When the curve ball got thrown, my whole idea of where the book was going crashed. I held my hope, but until about 40% in, it could have gone either way.

Hope had such healing to do. So much to come to terms with and to figure out. Then throw Antonio into the mix and he had just as much to let come to the surface. I loved how he treated her during this journey. It was beautiful.

I can't say enough good things. If you want a book that leaves you filled with Hope and love, then read this. It is a journey about being true to yourself and taking a chance. Overcome the hurt and grow from it.
The Synopsis:
No ties.
No expectations.
No risks.

Antonio Giovanni, a fifth-generation winemaker in the rolling hills of Tuscany, is the epitome of temptation. Tall, dark, and handsome with an accent sexy enough to leave a trail of women’s panties in his wake. The man wears charisma like a fine silk suit…flawless and molded to perfection in all the right places, leaving just enough mystery to make you wonder what lies beneath the faultless exterior.

Hope Tidwell, a world-renowned sommelier, is a strong independent woman who fights to have control over every aspect of her life. She makes her own money, her own decisions, her own happiness, and her own mistakes. Her existence doesn’t need to be validated by a man; she refuses to ask for anything except an orgasm, and even those she can manage on her own.

Relationships for most people are as natural as breathing. However, Hope and Antonio are two players who master the art of seduction and the fear of emotional intimacy. When tragedy strikes close to her heart, Hope is fated to do the one thing that terrifies her most.

Destiny reveals the biggest gifts often require the greatest sacrifices.

Beverly Preston deserves a standing ovation. The Italian had me captured from the first page. It was seductive, shocking, promising, witty, and yet so unpredictable! I fell in love with Hope and Antonio. They are alike in more ways than they realize. They have so much love to give, yet are so afraid of commitment. Beverly wrote with so much eloquence. Her words were affecting and appealing with the perfect delivery of each and every significant scene.
Hope Tidwell is focused on one thing, her career. She doesn’t need anyone, especially a man to make her the woman she is. She thinks her life is complete, but that is not the case. A surprise gift appears that she can’t say no to. Hope learns how to be open to love and everything that comes along with it.
Antonio Giovanni has met his match in Hope.. He is hot, a winemaker, and did I mention he has an accent. They have had a strictly sexual agreement for over 5 years, and are satisfied with that (but I’m not ;). When Hope faces a tragedy, Antonio is there for her in so many ways. He is so compassionate and stands by those he cares about. When he comes back into her life, he is definitely surprised. Who knew a surprise could cause so many emotions? He is shocked at her new look and starts thinking about his feelings for Hope. Can he expect her new change? Is it love or lust?
I read this book two times in less than a week because it was just that good. The characters were so fun to read about and be introduced to. I experienced so many feels while reading. I was in tears because of what Hope had to face, but also proud of the way she overcame it. She was always strong and determined, but when she was forced to make tough decisions she went with what she knew was right no matter how tough it was. I loved Antonio from the very beginning.Yes, you will experience some jealousy towards Hope because she gets know this man. He was confident and sexy and always stood up for what he thought was right. It was amazing to read about his relationship with Hope and seeing them have a realization about their true feelings. I definitely had a glass of wine..or two in honor of Hope and Antonio. Cannot wait to read more from Beverly.

Beautifully written book that can be read as a standalone or after it's prequel, but the author did a great job writing this book anyway to make it easy to follow up front. I loved this book, as I do with all the author's other books, but this one throws you for a loop, makes you cry, then makes you feel like everything is going to be absolutely amazing with a few hiccups in between. This book is a "love story" where love is found in the most unlikely places, with emotions that may make you ugly cry, just as a warning. Happy Reading!

This was my first book by Beverly Preston and holy cannoli!!! She did NOT disappoint!

Hope and Faith are sisters. Now all grown up with their demons somewhat behind them, Faith is married to Riley and Hope is a successful sommelier, traveling the world and they all live in Seattle. We meet winemaker Antonio in the beginning of the story and he’s everything a woman would want in a sexy, sensual Italian man. Hope and Antonio have been friends and bedmates for years due to her job and travels and you feel their underlying friendship right from the start.

Now there’s a big moment in this story that just left my jaw hanging and I drove my book sisters crazy with questions. I can’t include even a hint of it here as it’s a spoiler to me. However, once my tears dried and my shock subsided, it really all made sense. And let me just say……I think Samantha and Hope’s mom are two characters that I’ve wanted to throat punch the most out of all the books I’ve read in 2016!!

The gentleness and friendship of Antonio and his family for Hope was a strong thread throughout their story. Hope is so much stronger than she even knew and then with Antonio by her side….there was nothing she couldn’t face because she wouldn’t be facing it alone.

I loved this book. You must read this book. The Italian has ALL the feels and is one of the best books of 2016 for me. Now where can I find Antonio so I can be affectionately be called Bella all day?????

Antonio and Hope will leave your heart happy. I loved this story so much and as a fan of the Mathews Series - we get a few moments with some of our favorite Mathew family members too.

Antonio and Hope have known each other for years, with an on and off relationship that was full of passion whenever the two were in the same country. Hope's last visit with Antonio spurred an offer for her to come to Italy full time and work with Antonio's sister-in-law. Although it's a dream job, she was happy where she was and didn't give it a second thought.

Once home, Hope's world is rocked to the core and the only other person she trusts and can find some peace with is Antonio. As Hope moves to Italy and Antonio finds out her secret (which you'll have to read the book to find out - and boy is it a doozie!) Antonio starts to become more than just a trusted friend, which is a scary proposition for both of them.

This book made my heart soar. It's a good ole fashion love story. Not a lot of angst, but just the growth of two people how find there true self through each other. I adore Beverly and The Italian is definitely a top read for me.

Hope Tidwell was living the life. No strings relationships, a job she loved that included world travel and wine, everything was perfect. Until it wasn’t.

When she accepted her sister’s request, she never imagined how it would change her future forever. Accepting the job offer in Italy is just what she needs to give her new life a fresh start, but that also means seeing one of her lovers for more than a few weeks a year.

The Italian was a sweet contemporary romance packed with emotional moments. I loved the dynamic between Antonio and Hope. Hope was a strong, independent heroine that really shined during those vulnerable moments. And there was not a thing wrong with Antonio. I loved the way he stepped up to the plate. He was so endearing.

This isn’t my first Beverly Preston Read, but after finishing up this one, I had to go back and one-click the books that involve this cast of characters. And that cover. Josh Kloss. Nuff said.

Excellent book. I love the Matthews family. Faith and Hope got a raw deal for a mom. Tracy, Vincent and Antonio are such good characters. This is a great addition to the series. Can't wait for the next one.

Emotional.....heartwrenching......FABULOUS BOOK!!!!

This book sucked me right from the start. I love how Hope is strong and independent. And has such a great relationship with her sister, Faith. I love these two sisters.

Antonio is your HOT HOT Italian! HELLO! He is great! He knows what he wants and will do what he can to get it. Together these two are great. They just mesh so well as a friendship, business relationship, or a hook up or whatever they want to call themselves. (No labels lol)

Things change for Hope in her life and her plans for her future change in a blink of an eye. Antonio is there for her when she needs him the most.

Of course, we get the Matthew's Clan! Love them!

This book made me cry. And I mean I had to stop and put the book down because I got so emotional in reading it. You WILL need Kleenex for this book! It great and loved every word in it!

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of “The Italian” as I am a big fan of Beverly Preston and have read all of her books.

“The Italian” is the second book in the beyond Mathews family, but can be read as a stand-alone.

It is difficult to review without revealing spoilers, but this book is very emotional, particularly when tragedy strikes.

Hope is a strong, independent woman who is offered a job in Italy and rekindles a friendship with Antonio. Antonio is an old friend who doesn't believe in commitment, just like Hope, but when she discloses what has occurred, a budding relationship develops.

Antonio is swoon worthy, understanding and loving.

While reading each page, one can picture themselves in the beautiful setting of Italy.

The first book of Beverly’s, “No More Wasted Time” was always my favorite, but I think “The Italian” has surpassed that title. I didn't want the story to end. Loved the epilogue and I look forward to book 3 in The beyond Mathews family Series.
