A Quiet Flame opens in 1950. I want you to know that this an excellent thriller, which is why you see 5 stars at the top, even though it probably merits only 4.5.
In my GR friend, Matt’s review of Operation Paperclip he notes: “…the Cold War started to change the definition of justice. Sentences were reduced. Nazis who’d been responsible for pain, suffering, and death, ended up serving less time behind bars than some non-violent drug offenders in U.S. prisons today. Many more former Nazis were never tried at all, because of their value in the fight against communism.”
A Quiet Flame is, in part, another aspect of the post-war Nazi diaspora but it is centered in Argentina rather than in the USA.
Our man, Bernie Gunther, finds the post-war very challenging for someone associated with the German side. He is one of several “refugees” arriving in Argentina.* We come to know that country through Gunther’s eyes and experiences. His new employer observes: “Truly, the only safe questions to ask in Argentina are the questions one asks of oneself. That is why there are so many psychoanalysts in this country.”
This is a cautionary comment since Gunther has been hired by Argentina’s secret police to look into the disappearance of a teenager. They do so because Gunther had a high reputation as a detective in Berlin and the government was in possession of his and the Berlin police’s records. There was a case, back in the early 1930s, that involved the death and mutilation of a teenage girl. He was pulled off that case before it was solved because the Nazis took over the government. As he proceeds with his new assignment, we readers are taken on a back and forth journey between these two cases. Gunther may be more world-weary but he is the same dogged pursuer of truth and justice he has always been. He also rarely finds his superiors as interested as he is in such things.
“Unfortunately, nobody wanted me to do what I wanted. What they wanted was for me to do what they wanted. And much as I wished things to be different, I couldn’t see a way around any of this. I did, however, decide to attend to things according to my own idea of precedence." Our same old Bernie will feel the consequences of this. In fact, his approach results in more than one unintended consequence. In looking back on his role in all of that he muses: “I could hardly have risked her disapproval again by telling her I didn’t believe in God any more than I had believed in Adolf Hitler….After what I’d just told her, I needed to win her favor back again. So I nodded and said, ‘Maybe I’ll do that.’ And if there was a God, I figured He’d probably understand. After all, it’s easy to stop believing in God when you’ve stopped believing in anything else. When you’ve stopped believing in yourself.”
To borrow from another culture, this is story follows the Russian matryoshka doll format, as we pull open one character to find a new and surprising character inside. Repeat; find; open; repeat. In the hands of Philip Kerr this isn’t just a thriller formula, but a subtle and nuanced investigation of evil in its many forms. And, in addition to that, we have the sarcastic wit of Gunther that allows him to probe while retaining his sanity.
“Otto Schwarz came to the door to let us in….He was a big man with a belly that looked as if a lot of money had been poured into it….Underneath a swinish nose that was almost divided in two by a thick scar was a nearly invisible toothbrush mustache. That he reminded me of Ernst Rohm, the SA leader, was a first impression---reinforced by the uniform he was wearing, illegally. There had been a ban on Nazi uniforms since June 1930….in a campaign to reduce Nazi terrorism in Berlin….I came to learn not just that Schwarz was an Oberfuhrer in the SA but that this was the equivalent of a brigadier general….I wanted to say I was surprised to find a SA Oberfuhrer at home when there were Communists to lynch and Jewish windows to smash. But since I was about to tell Schwarz that his daughter was dead, I had to make do with an observation about his wearing the uniform of a proscribed organization. Half of the polenta in Berlin would have looked the other way, ignoring it. But then half of the cops in Berlin were Nazis.”
Kerr, as I have noted in other reviews, has elevated this genre. First is that “his” venues are as much characters in many of the stories as any person; second, he (through Gunther) attacks evil as assiduously as gardener attacks invasive plant species. For all the comparisons to other “detectives,” this makes him quite different from most writers of detective fiction.
From what I can determine, the facts involving Argentinian projects, Peronistas, and Nazi refugees are well-researched. The sprinkling of familiar people only adds to tension and drama.
*Many will recall that Argentina was a “haven” for key Nazis who escaped capture.

Λυπάμαι ειλικρινά που δεν είχα διαβάσει ως τώρα κάποιο βιβλίο του Philip Kerr και δεν είχα γνωρίσει τον ντετέκτιβ Μπέρνχαρτ Γκούντερ...Ευτυχώς,ποτέ δεν είναι αργά και έγινε η αρχή!
Έχουν προηγηθεί άλλα 4 ή 5 βιβλία από αυτό(τα οποία ΕΝΝΟΕΙΤΑΙ έχω προσθέσει στη λίστα μου)και δεν μπορώ να συγκρίνω εκείνα με αυτό που διάβασα,αν όμως ακολουθείται το ίδιο μοτίβο -πράγμα που πιστεύω πως γίνεται- τότε μιλάμε για συλλογή διαμαντιών!
Ο Kerr στη "Φλόγα που σιγοκαίει" κατορθώνει να συνδυάσει αριστοτεχνικά τη Γερμανία των αρχών του '30 και την Αργεντινή των αρχών του '50,αναπαριστώντας δύο σημαντικές για την ανθρωπότητα εποχές με λεπτομέρεια έμπειρου ιστορικού και γραφή άξιου λογοτέχνη,μεταπηδώντας από την μία εποχή στην άλλη κρατώντας σφιχτά τον αναγνώστη από το χέρι και μην επιτρέποντάς του να χαλαρώσει την επιφυλακτικότητά του για το τι τον περιμένει στην επόμενη σελίδα.
Ένας ήρωας αντίΝαζί μέσα σε έναν κόσμο όπου ο Ναζισμός είχε ήδη αρχίσει να ανθίζει,ένας ήρωας αντίΝαζί σε μια νέα χώρα,κουβαλώντας στις πλάτες του όλες τις τραγικές μνήμες του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου,μια χώρα που ανακαλύπτει πως μοιάζει μ' εκείνη που άφησε πίσω του περισσότερο απ' όσο ο ίδιος θα 'θελε..Που συνειδητοποιεί πως, μερικές φορές, η ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται και πως δεν είναι τόσο εύκολο να ξεφύγεις από ορισμένες καταστάσεις που σε κυνηγούν άθελά σου. This one isn't quite as tightly plotted or suspenseful as the previous book, though every bit as dark, and relies a bit too much on coincidence to tie some of the plot threads together. Yet the big mystery at the core of the story, with true to life historical underpinnings, remains compelling, as does the setting in a 1950 Buenos Aires rife with Nazi war criminals and a government that's no less twisted. With every book Kerr reveals more of Gunther, here wracked with the guilt of his country's atrocities, laying his soul bare and injecting a deep pathos throughout the series. Kerr's superb Chandleresque wit and cynicism, plus ample hardboiled nuggets of pithy observations continue to make reading every page a pleasure. I'm almost embarrassed at how many lines I highlighted in this book.

Book 5: Bernie Gunther Goes To Argentina (and meets the rich and infamous along the way)
So Bernie's fifth outing followed quickly on the heels of the very excellent return to form of The One from the Other and ended up being the worst of the lot (so far.) This was a direct sequel to the fourth book, the only time that elapsed was the journey across the Atlantic, with Bernie arriving in Buenos Aires alongside his bunk mate Nazi War Criminal Eichmann in the opening chapter. This time he is investigating the horrors of National Socialism transposed to 1950 Argentina in a ludicrous "case" featuring murdered children.
Bernie, at his best, is a great character full of snappy one liners and smart observations but sadly those traits are few and far between in A Quiet Flame; their brief appearances garnering this book an extra star, rescuing it from a mediocre tale filled with Dan Brown-esque endings to chapters such as the ever popular "if only it was that simple," "I think you're about to find out" and "as things turned out I should have stayed." This is not the intelligent thriller writer I've come to expect, what have you done with the real Philip Kerr?
He acknowledges his reading of The Real Odessa as the primary source for his information on Nazism in Argentina and whilst I have no doubts that it's a fascinating and disturbing read I don't think Kerr tried hard enough to turn it in to a Bernie Gunther thriller, disguising his research with a barely readable story filled with exposition and padding it out with a few tedious (and long) chapters of back story of an old murder case set in 1932 Berlin. These flashback scenes allowing Kerr to ladle on the anti-Nazi quips from Gunther, none of them particularly clever or funny and all of them very repetitive.
The use of famous Nazis in the background of Bernie's investigations is a staple of the series but in this one Kerr went too far, featuring prominent roles for 'Angel of Death' Josef Mengele and the Perons, the constant appearances of Evita and the effect of that awful Madonna song from the musical popping in to my head for pages at a time didn't help alleviate my bad feelings towards the book. All of it working in a way that intends to comfort the reader, allowing them a certain smugness in knowing about these 'celebrities' from recent history but for me it was just a cynical and completely unnecessary device; in the same way there was no need for him to basically scream HEY THAT HOLOCAUST THING WAS REALLY BAD, FEEL BAD ABOUT IT PEOPLE!, we know it's bad and by using the sequences he does he's making use of horrifying events from history purely as entertainment whereas in previous Gunther books it was written in such a way that it felt natural and actually horrifying.
Ahh hell maybe I'll take that third star away after all. Get well soon Bernie.
EDIT 14.1.2013: I started the sixth book in the series today and was immediately repulsed by the awful direction Philip Kerr's writing has taken. In the first page some clever German with amazing foresight tells us "mark my words that Hitler is determined to start another war with England and France" and a new low in the Bernie Gunther series is reached. Reading back on ths review I have come to the conclusion that I will read no more of these books, A Quiet Flame will be my last. Philip Kerr should have stayed out of the noir game if this is the best he can do after a 15 year break.

Καλημερούδια και χρόνια πολλά σε όλους!!! Τι πιο ωραίο να ξεκινάω την εβδομάδα μου έχοντας να κάνω κριτική σε ένα βιβλίο που με συντρόφευσε αυτό το Σαβ/κο και κυρίως σε ένα συγγραφέα που η γνωριμία μας ξεκίνησε με τη μορφή κεραυνοβόλου έρωτα στη Μοιραία Πράγα και μετά τη Φλόγα που σιγοκαίει τείνει να μετατραπεί σε ειλικρινή και απεριόριστη αγάπη. Δηλώνω λάτρης των αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων αν και τα είχα αφήσει λίγο στην άκρη τελευταία όμως πραγματικά όμως πραγματικά ο Φίλιπ Κερρ και ο ήρωας Μπέρνι Γκούντερ έχουν κατορθώσει να μπουν ήδη στην καρδιά μου παρόλο που ξεκίνησα την ανάγνωση των περιπετειών του ανάποδα. Φιλιπ Κερρ ένας απίστευτος και μοναδικός γραφιάς που τα βάζω με τον εαυτό μου που δεν τον είχα ανακαλύψει νωρίτερα ο οποίος έχει τη δυνατότητα με την αστείρευτη και δυναμική πένα του να συνδυάζει το μύθο με την ιστορία, μια ιστορία που έπαιξε και θα συνεχίζει να παίζει ρόλο σε ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα. Στη φλόγα που σιγοκλαίει ο Κερρ μεταφέρει τον ήρωα του μακριά από τη Ναζιστική Γερμανία στην Αργεντινή και καλεί τους αναγνώστες του να χορέψουν ένα μοναδικό «λογοτεχνικό» ταγκό που θα σας σαγηνεύσει μέχρι τη τελευταία του σελίδα. Βρισκόμασε στα 1950, ο Δεύτερος Παγκόσμιος πόλεμος έχει πλέον τελειώσει και όσοι από τα παλληκαράκια του Χίτλερ δεν καταδικάστηκαν βρήκαν καταφύγιο στην Αργεντινή δεδομένου ότι η κυβέρνηση, δικτακτορία στην πραγματικότητα του Περόν ευνοούσε όλους εκείνους τους δολοφόνους ανθρώπων και συνειδήσεων να συνεχίσουν αμετανόητοι τη ζωή τους σε μια χώρα μακριά από τη Ναζιστική Γερμανία μεν που δεν ξέφυγε από τις βρωμερές επιπτώσεις της δε. Ανάμεσα σε αυτούς και ο δικός μας Μπέρνι Γκούντερ που μπορεί να υπήρξε αντι-ναζιστής στη χώρα τω Ναζί μια πλεκτάνη όμως εις βάρος του τον αναγκάζει να εγκαταλείψει το Βερολίνο. Ο Κερρ καταφέρνει να συνδέσει αριστοτεχνικά διαμέσου του Γκούντερ δύο εποχές το Βερολίνο του 30, το Βερολίνο των Ναζιστών και την Αργεντινή του 50 που αποτέλεσε καταφύγιο αυτών. Ο Μπέρνι φτάνοντας στην Αργεντινή αναγκάζεται να συμπορευτεί με ανθρώπους που στην πραγματικότητα θα έλεγε κανείς ότι απεχθάνεται σε μια χώρα που τελικά φαίνεται να θυμίζει σε πολλά τη χώρα που άφησε πίσω του. Καταπονημένος και άρρωστος (πάσχει από καρκίνο του θυροειδους) δε σκέφτεται σε καμία περίπτωση ότι η αστυνομική του ιδιότητα θα του ξαναχτυπήσει τη πόρτα όταν του ζητούν να εξιχνιάσει την υπόθεση δολοφονίας μιας έφηβης κοπέλας, μια υπόθεση που παρουσιάζει πολλές ομοιότητες μια αντίστοιχη υπόθεση δολοφονίας που δεν κατάφερε να εξιχνιάσει στο Βερολίνο καθώς το ναζιστικό καθεστώς είχε κάνει τα αδύνατα δυνατά για να τον αποτρέψει. Από εκείνη τη στιγμή μπαίνει το νερό στο αυλάκι συγγραφικά και ο Κερρ ακροβατώντας μεταξύ των δύο εποχών με τρόπο πραγματικά μαεστρικο ενώ για ακόμα μια φορά η ιστορία και τα γεγονότα που σημάδεψαν την ανθρωπότητα αποτελούν τον οδηγό και συνοδοιπόρο του Μπέρνι προς τη διαλεύκανση και αυτού του εγκλήματος.
2 πράγματα παρατηρώ και λατρεύω στα βιβλία του Κερρ. Αρχικά αγαπώ τον κεντρικό του ήρωα. Στην εποχή του Χάρι Χολε του Νεσμπο του Πάτρικ της Λεκμπεργκ δεν ξέρω νομίζω ότι ο Μπέρνι Γκούντερ αποτελεί το δικό μου αγαπημένο αστυνομικό ήρωα άρα τι πιο σημαντική πρώτη ύλη από ένα αγαπητό κεντρικό ήρωα. Αντιναζιστής, κυνικός αλλά και συνάμα ο πιο ανθρώπινος και ρεαλιστικός που ερωτεύεται, παλεύει να ξορκίσει το ίδιο του το παρελθόν δίνει πνοή μέσα από τη διήγηση δια του στόματος του σε κάθε ιστορία του Κερρ δίνοντας στα βιβλία του μια αφηγηματική δύναμη μοναδική. Ενας ένας άνθρωπος οι πηγες του παρελθόντος δε φαίνεται να χουν κλείσει, οι ερινύες να τον καταδιώκουν και ταυτόχρονα να μπορεί να γίνει ο πιο κυνικός αλλά και ρομαντικός άνθρωπος. Το δεύτερο πράγμα που με γοητεύει και το συνάντησα σε όσα βιβλία του έχω διαβάσει ως σήμερα ότι επιλέγει να εξιστορήσει το αστυνομικό μέρος της πλοκής του χρησιμοποιώντας με έξυπνο τρόπο την ίδια την ιστορία αλλά και υπαρκτά πρόσωπα αυτής φέρνοντας έτσι μπροστά στα μάτια των αναγνωστών όλα τα θλιβερά γεγονότα του Δεύτερου Παγκόσμιου πολέμου καθώς και τις συνέπειες αυτου που συνέχισαν να ταλανίζουν για χρόνια αργότερα την Ευρώπη και ολόκληρο τον κόσμο έστω και αν περιγράφοντας όλη αυτή την ανηθικότητα και απανθρωπιά της εποχής δε σου αφήνει την αίσθηση για ένα κόσμο και μια κοινωνία που αλλάζει αλλά αντίστοιχα βυθίζεται στη βρωμιά και τρέφεται από την ασυδοσία αυτών που θέλησαν να γράψουν την ιστορία με αίμα.

Είμαστε στο 1950 κι ο Μπέρνι βρίσκεται στην Αργεντινή. Ο αρχηγός της τοπικής αστυνομίας του ζητά να βοηθήσει στη διαλεύκανση της δολοφονίας μιας έφηβης. Τα στοιχεία θυμίζουν πολύ έντονα 2 υποθέσεις που είχε αναλάβει στο παρελθόν ως ντετέκτιβ στο Βερολίνο, οι οποίες παραμένουν άλυτες. Υπάρχει η υποψία ότι ο δολοφόνος είναι ένας από τους Ναζί που "διέφυγαν" στην Αργεντινή.
Η ιστορία κινείται σε 2 χρόνους παράλληλα•στο τώρα και στο Βερολίνο πριν τον ΒΠΠ. Ο Μπέρνι κυνηγά φαντάσματα του παρελθόντος και έρχεται σε επαφή με άλλους Γερμανούς που κατέφυγαν εκεί για να κρυφτούν σε κοινή θέα.

When I finished 'The One from the Other' (Bernie Günther #4), having also loved the original Berlin trilogy, I wondered if Philip Kerr could keep the extraordinary level of quality going. Sadly, the answer is no. 'A Quiet Flame' (Bernie Günther #5) is fine, just not up to the sky high levels of the previous two novels ('A German Requiem' and 'The One from the Other').
'A Quiet Flame' (Bernie Günther #5) feels as though it was written with less care and attention than the previous four books. The implausibility levels, always high in these books, reach new levels of preposterousness in 'A Quiet Flame'. It’s usually easy to ignore the implausibilities in the Bernie Günther books as they have exciting plots aligned to the superb period detail. The jeopardy in 'A Quiet Flame’ was less tense and the plot less compelling. Factor in Bernie’s love interest, Anna Yagubsky, a naive young fool and one of the most annoying characters to ever appear in a Bernie Günther novel, and sections of the book were actually irksome.
'A Quiet Flame' carries on straight from where 'The One from the Other' left off, with Bernie arriving in Buenos Aires, with a fake Red Cross passport (and accompanied by Eichmann), for a new life. Before you can say "Welcome to Argentina" Bernie has met Juan Perón, and Evita, and then moments later, after a diagnosis of thyroid cancer, the head of the secret police Colonel Montalban has recruited him to investigate the gruesome murder of Greta Wohlauf, a young German-Argentine girl. Montalban believes the murder was committed by one of the thousands of Nazis who had found refuge in Argentina since 1945, and Bernie reluctantly agrees to help.
The murder investigation in Buenos Aires is told concurrently with an earlier, related murder investigation the younger Bernie worked in Berlin 1932. This was was the murder of Anita Schwarz, the disabled daughter of a prominent member of the Nazi SA (the Brown Shirts) who also worked as a prostitute.
The historical context, and insights into day to day life in both Berlin in 1932, and Buenos Aires in 1950, elevate this book. The run up to the 1932 general elections, and the seemingly unstoppable rise of the Nazi Party, is brilliantly evoked. The rise of Nazism has a profound effect on Bernie, who is openly hostile to Nazism and the Nazis within the police, and inevitably his circumstances change significantly throughout the book. As with previous books in this series, even after the war, Bernie cannot move on from the Nazis and the dark legacy of the era remains inescapable in 'A Quiet Flame'
As an aside, I've noticed that in every Bernie Günther book so far Philip Kerr mentions "The Horst Wessel Song", and in particular how much Bernie loathes it. Sure enough, it's in 'A Quiet Flame’. It turns out that the song was written by a Nazi brownshirt, the eponymous Wessell, who died in an altercation with Communists. In 'A Quiet Flame’ we get to discover how Joseph Goebbels, in an attempt to create Nazi martyrs for propaganda purposes, promoted the song which became the anthem of the Nazi Party. With the end of the Nazi regime in May 1945, "The Horst Wessel Song" was banned. The lyrics and tune are now illegal in Germany, with some limited exceptions.

Το 1950, ο Μπέρνχαρντ Γκούντερ, έχοντας δραπετεύσει από το ρωσικό στρατόπεδο συγκέντρωσης όπου ήταν φυλακισμένος, αναγκάζεται να καταφύγει με ψεύτικο όνομα στην Αργεντινή. Μιας που δήλωσε γιατρός, ο ίδιος ο Χουάν Περόν θέλησε να τον δει κι έτσι αναγκάστηκε να αποκαλύψει την πραγματική του ταυτότητα, μπλέκοντας έτσι σε μια συναρπαστική περιπέτεια, μιας και ο αστυνόμος Μονταλμπάν τον ρίχνει σε μια υπόθεση δολοφονίας και εξαφάνισης.
Έχοντας πάψει από την αρχή σχεδόν να ψάχνω με ποια σειρά πρέπει να διαβάσω τα βιβλία με πρωταγωνιστή τον Γκούντερ, επικεντρώνομαι πλέον στην υποβλητική ατμόσφαιρα της εκάστοτε περιοχής που διαλέγει ο συγγραφέας να τοποθετήσει τον ήρωά του και στην εκπληκτική ψυχογράφηση του ήρωα αυτού, που σε κάθε μα κάθε βιβλίο όλο και κάποιο πετραδάκι προστίθεται. Όχι για να τον αλλάξει ή να τον αποπροσανατολίσει αναληθώς στα μάτια του αναγνώστη. Ο Γκούντερ, που παραμένει είρων, πανέξυπνος, φλύαρος και αντιναζιστής, σε αυτό το βιβλίο αρχίζει να έρχεται αντιμέτωπος επιτέλους με τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό, μιας και αναλογίζεται ότι συνολικά έχει σκοτώσει ούτε μια χούφτα ανθρώπους και αυτό μόνο υπό πολύ δύσκολες συνθήκες. Τώρα όμως, σε αυτήν την περιπέτεια που ζει, τα γεγονότα και οι καταστάσεις τον οδηγούν όλο και πιο συχνά να σηκώνει όπλο. Και όχι μόνο αυτό αλλά επιτέλους αρχίζει να νιώθει εκείνη τη φλόγα που σιγοκαίει, τη φλόγα του έρωτα και της αγάπης, πολλά χρόνια μετά τον άδικο θάνατο της συζύγου του από ασθένεια κάπου στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1930.
Δεν ξέρω πού να πρωτοαναφερθώ και τι να πρωτοσχολιάσω. Να κάνω παρατηρήσεις επί της περίπλοκης και πολυεπίπεδης υπόθεσης; Να σχολιάσω τον υπέροχο κόσμο που συγκροτεί ο Φίλιπ Κερ για μια χώρα που υποτίθεται είναι παράδεισος για τους φυγάδες Γερμανούς εγκληματίες πολέμου αλλά κάτι κάτω από την επιφάνεια αυτή αχνοδείχνει ότι εκεί γίνονται τα ίδια και χειρότερα, όχι εν γνώσει τ��ς Αργεντινής; Να συγχαρώ τον συγγραφέα για την εξαιρετική λεπτοδουλειά που έκανε, καταφέρνοντας να περιγράψει ταυτόχρονα μια υπόθεση του Γκούντερ στο Βερολίνο του 1932 και στο Μπουένος Άιρες του 1950, μια υπόθεση που πρέπει να έχει τον ίδιο καταζητούμενο εγκληματία αλλά πώς θα το αποδείξει αυτό ο Γκούντερ;
Τα ιστορικά πρόσωπα, η Ιστορία αυτή καθαυτή, πρωταγωνιστούν σε αυτήν την υπέροχη περιπέτεια, με τον Χουάν Περόν και την Εβίτα να περιγράφονται γλαφυρότατα και η κατάσταση και η θέση της χώρας να αναλύονται διεξοδικά, με καίριες παρατηρήσεις, εν τη ρύμη της ιστορίας και όχι κουραστικά ή εγκυκλοπαιδικά. Μου έκανε εντύπωση το πόσο καλά ξέρει ο Φίλιπ Κερ την ιστορία της δεκαετίας του 1930 και όχι μόνο, γιατί οι παρομοιώσεις του, οι αναφορές του, το χιούμορ του ασχολείται με πρόσωπα της επικαιρότητας! Ο Γιόζεφ Μένγκελε, ο Άντολφ Άιχμαν και ο μηχανικός των στρατοπέδων συγκέντρωσης Χανς Κάιμλερ είναι εδώ, καπνίζουν, ψάχνουν για κοριτσάκια, πειραματίζονται, κρύβονται, ζώντας μια άνετη ζωή, χωρίς να έχουν μετανιώσει στιγμή ούτε για τα εγκλήματά τους ούτε για τις συνέπειες του ναζισμού στον κόσμο.
Στην ιστορία ουσιαστικά έχουμε τέσσερις αφετηρίες: την εξαφάνιση μιας κοπέλας και τον δολοφονικό ακρωτηριασμό μιας άλλης, στοιχεία που παραπέμπουν σε μια αντίστοιχη υπόθεση που είχε ξεκινήσει να διαλευκαίνει ο Γκούντερ το 1932, λίγους μήνες πριν τις κρίσιμες εκλογές του Μαρτίου του 1933, οπότε ο Χίτλερ διορίστηκε πρώτη φορά καγκελάριος. Ανατρίχιασα με την κατηφόρα που ακολουθούσε ο κόσμος εκείνη την εποχή, με τη Δημοκρατία της Βαϊμάρης να φυλλορροεί, με τον Χίτλερ να ανεβαίνει αξιώματα χωρίς κανείς να μπορεί να τον αντιμετωπίσει ουσιαστικά, αντίθετα, ο κόσμος πίστευε στα οράματα, τα ιδανικά και τη δύναμη του εθνικοσοσιαλισμού γιατί η κατάσταση στην πολιτική, κοινωνική και οικονομική ζωή δεν είχε άλλες ελπίδες, δεν μπορούσε να βασιστεί πουθενά αλλού. Έβλεπα τον ναζισμό να έχει εισχωρήσει παντού, σε επιφανείς και μη πολίτες, τον κομμουνισμό και τον σοσιαλισμό να γίνονται θηράματα, το Βερολίνο να γίνεται μια άναρχη, απέραντη πόλη ηδονής (τρομερές οι πληροφορίες στη σελίδα 139). Ο Γκούντερ ήταν τόσο δημοκρατικός που πίστευε ότι έστω και με μικρή διαφορά θα κυριαρχούσε ο σοσιαλισμός. Φευ, οι εκλογές του 1933 ήταν η αρχή του τέλους, ο Χίτλερ κατοικοεδρεύει στην εξουσία, καίει το Ράιχσταγκ, ξαναπάει σε εκλογές τον Οκτώβρη του ίδιου έτους και τα δάκρυα του κόσμου αρχίζουν να κυλούν ματωμένα. Αυτό είχε ως συνέπεια να αλλάξει η ηγεσία της αστυνομίας και να αποπεμφθεί ο Γκούντερ τότε από την υπόθεση, λίγο πριν φτάσει στην τραγική αλήθεια.
Μπουένος Άιρες, 1950. Με μια εκπληκτική δεξιοτεχνία στην αφήγηση, βλέπουμε τον Γκούντερ να αναγκάζεται να αναλάβει την αντίστοιχη υπόθεση στην Αργεντινή, που σημαίνει ότι ίσως ο δολοφόνος να κατέφυγε στη μακρινή αυτή χώρα και να μην άντεξε να σταματήσει το έργο του. Αυτή όμως είναι μόνο η αρχή της πιο μπλεγμένης ιστορίας που ξετύλιξε ποτέ ο αγαπημένος ντετέκτιβ. Γιατί δεν έχουμε μόνο δολοφονία, έχουμε τον θησαυρό των Εβραίων που συγκέντρωσαν οι Ναζί και φυγάδευσαν στην Αργεντινή («Μόντε Κρίστο»), έχουμε τους πέντε σημαντικότερους Αργεντινογερμανούς τραπεζίτες που φυλάνε τα κλειδιά των λογαριασμών σε ελβετικές τράπεζες με δισεκατομμύρια λεφτά να ξεκουράζονται, χρήματα αρπαγμένα από αθώους και δυστυχισμένους ανθρώπους (οι τραπεζίτες ανέλαβαν αυτά τα χρήματα για να χρηματοδοτήσουν από αυτήν την πλευρά του Ατλαντικού τον πόλεμο στην Ευρώπη) έχουμε τον Μένγκελε να συνεχίζει το θεάρεστο έργο του, έχουμε μυστηριώδεις εξαφανίσεις Εβραίων προσφύγων που αναζητούν καταφύγιο στη νότια Αμερική, έχουμε τόσα πολλά ζητήματα που χρησιμοποιεί ο συγγραφέας για να δείξει πως τίποτε δεν άλλαξε, η Ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται και φυσικά όποιος ανακαλύψει καλά κρυμμένα μυστικά πρέπει να πεθάνει. Υπέροχ, διττή πλοκή, που διαδραματίζεται σε δυο κατ’ ουσίαν στον ίδιο βαθμό διεφθαρμένες πόλεις: «...ενώ το Βερολίνο επεδείκνυε ανοιχτά τη φαυλότητα και τη διαφθορά του, το Μπουένος Άιρες έκρυβε την όρεξή του για ακολασία, σα γέρος παπάς που έπινε από ένα μπουκαλάκι χωμένο στην τσέπη του ράσου του» (σελ. 392-393).
Τι κρύβεται λοιπόν πραγματικά πίσω από την υποθεση που ανέλαβε ο Γκούντερ; Γιατί εξαφανίστηκε το ένα κορίτσι και ποιος κατέσφαξε το άλλο και γιατί; Τι ρόλο παίζει σε όλα αυτά η ίδια η Εβίτα Περόν; Τι συμβαίνει στη χώρα που φιλοξενούσε τους εγκληματίες πολέμου και τι σχεδίασαν αυτά τα κτήνη για να περνάνε την ��ρα τους στη μακρινή αυτή χώρα; Τι ζητά αυτή η πανέμορφη κοπέλα που ανέθεσε στον Γκούντερ να ανακαλύψει τους Εβραίους θείους της; Τι είναι οι Οδηγίες 11 και 12; Ποιος κατασκευάζει ένα φράγμα στις πάμπες της Αργεντινής; Θα καταφέρει να βγάλει άκρη ο Γκούντερ και να επιβιώσει; Περίπλοκο, πολυεπίπεδο, χορταστικό μυθιστόρημα που θέλει συγκέντρωση και προσοχή ως το τέλος, όπου οι αποκαλύψεις δε σταματούν ούτε σελίδα!

Τα ιστορικά πρόσωπα, η Ιστορία αυτή καθαυτή, πρωταγωνιστούν σε αυτήν την υπέροχη περιπέτεια, με τον Χουάν Περόν και την Εβίτα να περιγράφονται γλαφυρότατα και η κατάσταση και η θέση της χώρας να αναλύονται διεξοδικά, με καίριες παρατηρήσεις, εν τη ρύμη της ιστορίας και όχι κουραστικά ή εγκυκλοπαιδικά. Μου έκανε εντύπωση το πόσο καλά ξέρει ο Φίλιπ Κερ την ιστορία της δεκαετίας του 1930 και όχι μόνο, γιατί οι παρομοιώσεις του, οι αναφορές του, το χιούμορ του ασχολείται με πρόσωπα της επικαιρότητας! Ο Γιόζεφ Μένγκελε, ο Άντολφ Άιχμαν και ο μηχανικός των στρατοπέδων συγκέντρωσης Χανς Κάιμλερ είναι εδώ, καπνίζουν, ψάχνουν για κοριτσάκια, πειραματίζονται, κρύβονται, ζώντας μια άνετη ζωή, χωρίς να έχουν μετανιώσει στιγμή ούτε για τα εγκλήματά τους ούτε για τις συνέπειες του ναζισμού στον κόσμο.
Στην ιστορία ουσιαστικά έχουμε τέσσερις αφετηρίες: την εξαφάνιση μιας κοπέλας και τον δολοφονικό ακρωτηριασμό μιας άλλης, στοιχεία που παραπέμπουν σε μια αντίστοιχη υπόθεση που είχε ξεκινήσει να διαλευκαίνει ο Γκούντερ το 1932, λίγους μήνες πριν τις κρίσιμες εκλογές του Μαρτίου του 1933, οπότε ο Χίτλερ διορίστηκε πρώτη φορά καγκελάριος. Ανατρίχιασα με την κατηφόρα που ακολουθούσε ο κόσμος εκείνη την εποχή, με τη Δημοκρατία της Βαϊμάρης να φυλλορροεί, με τον Χίτλερ να ανεβαίνει αξιώματα χωρίς κανείς να μπορεί να τον αντιμετωπίσει ουσιαστικά, αντίθετα, ο κόσμος πίστευε στα οράματα, τα ιδανικά και τη δύναμη του εθνικοσοσιαλισμού γιατί η κατάσταση στην πολιτική, κοινωνική και οικονομική ζωή δεν είχε άλλες ελπίδες, δεν μπορούσε να βασιστεί πουθενά αλλού. Έβλεπα τον ναζισμό να έχει εισχωρήσει παντού, σε επιφανείς και μη πολίτες, τον κομμουνισμό και τον σοσιαλισμό να γίνονται θηράματα, το Βερολίνο να γίνεται μια άναρχη, απέραντη πόλη ηδονής (τρομερές οι πληροφορίες στη σελίδα 139). Ο Γκούντερ ήταν τόσο δημοκρατικός που πίστευε ότι έστω και με μικρή διαφορά θα κυριαρχούσε ο σοσιαλισμός. Φευ, οι εκλογές του 1933 ήταν η αρχή του τέλους, ο Χίτλερ κατοικοεδρεύει στην εξουσία, καίει το Ράιχσταγκ, ξαναπάει σε εκλογές τον Οκτώβρη του ίδιου έτους και τα δάκρυα του κόσμου αρχίζουν να κυλούν ματωμένα. Αυτό είχε ως συνέπεια να αλλάξει η ηγεσία της αστυνομίας και να αποπεμφθεί ο Γκούντερ τότε από την υπόθεση, λίγο πριν φτάσει στην τραγική αλήθεια.
Μπουένος Άιρες, 1950. Με μια εκπληκτική δεξιοτεχνία στην αφήγηση, βλέπουμε τον Γκούντερ να αναγκάζεται να αναλάβει την αντίστοιχη υπόθεση στην Αργεντινή, που σημαίνει ότι ίσως ο δολοφόνος να κατέφυγε στη μακρινή αυτή χώρα και να μην άντεξε να σταματήσει το έργο του. Αυτή όμως είναι μόνο η αρχή της πιο μπλεγμένης ιστορίας που ξετύλιξε ποτέ ο αγαπημένος ντετέκτιβ. Γιατί δεν έχουμε μόνο δολοφονία, έχουμε τον θησαυρό των Εβραίων που συγκέντρωσαν οι Ναζί και φυγάδευσαν στην Αργεντινή («Μόντε Κρίστο»), έχουμε τους πέντε σημαντικότερους Αργεντινογερμανούς τραπεζίτες που φυλάνε τα κλειδιά των λογαριασμών σε ελβετικές τράπεζες με δισεκατομμύρια λεφτά να ξεκουράζονται, χρήματα αρπαγμένα από αθώους και δυστυχισμένους ανθρώπους (οι τραπεζίτες ανέλαβαν αυτά τα χρήματα για να χρηματοδοτήσουν από αυτήν την πλευρά του Ατλαντικού τον πόλεμο στην Ευρώπη) έχουμε τον Μένγκελε να συνεχίζει το θεάρεστο έργο του, έχουμε μυστηριώδεις εξαφανίσεις Εβραίων προσφύγων που αναζητούν καταφύγιο στη νότια Αμερική, έχουμε τόσα πολλά ζητήματα που χρησιμοποιεί ο συγγραφέας για να δείξει πως τίποτε δεν άλλαξε, η Ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται και φυσικά όποιος ανακαλύψει καλά κρυμμένα μυστικά πρέπει να πεθάνει. Υπέροχ, διττή πλοκή, που διαδραματίζεται σε δυο κατ’ ουσίαν στον ίδιο βαθμό διεφθαρμένες πόλεις: «...ενώ το Βερολίνο επεδείκνυε ανοιχτά τη φαυλότητα και τη διαφθορά του, το Μπουένος Άιρες έκρυβε την όρεξή του για ακολασία, σα γέρος παπάς που έπινε από ένα μπουκαλάκι χωμένο στην τσέπη του ράσου του» (σελ. 392-393).
Τι κρύβεται λοιπόν πραγματικά πίσω από την υποθεση που ανέλαβε ο Γκούντερ; Γιατί εξαφανίστηκε το ένα κορίτσι και ποιος κατέσφαξε το άλλο και γιατί; Τι ρόλο παίζει σε όλα αυτά η ίδια η Εβίτα Περόν; Τι συμβαίνει στη χώρα που φιλοξενούσε τους εγκληματίες πολέμου και τι σχεδίασαν αυτά τα κτήνη για να περνάνε την ��ρα τους στη μακρινή αυτή χώρα; Τι ζητά αυτή η πανέμορφη κοπέλα που ανέθεσε στον Γκούντερ να ανακαλύψει τους Εβραίους θείους της; Τι είναι οι Οδηγίες 11 και 12; Ποιος κατασκευάζει ένα φράγμα στις πάμπες της Αργεντινής; Θα καταφέρει να βγάλει άκρη ο Γκούντερ και να επιβιώσει; Περίπλοκο, πολυεπίπεδο, χορταστικό μυθιστόρημα που θέλει συγκέντρωση και προσοχή ως το τέλος, όπου οι αποκαλύψεις δε σταματούν ούτε σελίδα!

I have been reading the Bernie Gunther novels slowly over the past few years after first reading BERLIN NOIR which contains the first three in the series. A QUIET FLAME is the fifth book and it finds Bernie in Argentina in 1950 after he is accused of being a Nazi war criminal. In Buenos Aires he tries to start a new life when he is approached by a local policeman, Colonel Montalban, who knew of Bernie's former life as a police detective in Berlin. He asks Bernie to investigate the murder of a teenage girl who was brutally eviscerated after being murdered. The girl was killed in a similar manner as some young women who Bernie investigated in Berlin in 1932. Montalban thinks the killer could be the same person as the killer back in Berlin. Argentina had allowed many Nazis to immigrate there after the war and the killer may be among them. When another teen goes missing, Gunther agrees to slyly question his fellow expatriates in exchange for medical treatment for thyroid cancer. Meanwhile, a young Jewish woman, Anna Yagubsky, begs Gunther to find out what happened to her missing aunt and uncle. All of this leads to some very dark findings by Gunther involving some of the most notorious Nazi war criminals including Mengele and Eichman.
The story is told from two different time periods, Argentina in 1950 and Berlin in 1932 just prior to Hitler being made Chancellor of Germany. This was really a superb post WWII thriller with Gunther being assumed by most to being an amoral racist because of his past in the SS. The novel gave a really unique and intriguing look at the Nazis and their life in Argentina under Peron's rule as well as life in Berlin at the end of the Weimar Republic in 1932. I'll be looking forward to continuing with the remaining books in this series.

Βρισκόμαστε στα 1950, στην Αργεντινή, όπου έχει καταφτάσει σαν εγκληματίας πολέμου, ναι, ο φτωχός σοσιαλδημοκράτης Μπέρνι που απεχθανόταν τον Χίτλερ και τους Ναζί, όπου και προσπαθεί να στρώσει τη ζωή του, 5 χρόνια αφότου ο χορτοφάγος, αντικαπνιστής και φιλόζωος Αδόλφος αυτοκτόνησε μετά από μπούλινγκ των Σοβιετικών.
Ωστόσο, η ζωή δεν είναι ποτέ εύκολη για τον ήρωα του Kerr (αλλιώς, θα είχε πολύ λιγότερα βιβλία η σειρά, κι αυτό σίγουρα δε θα ήταν προς όφελος του αναγνώστη). Αφότου γνωρίσει τον Περόν και την Εβίτα και αφότου εξομολογηθεί στον πρώτο ότι δεν είναι ο διαπρεπής γιατρός με του οποίου το όνομα πάτησε το Αργεντίνικο χώμα... αρχίζει να μπλέκει.
Ένα κορίτσι βρίσκεται άσχημα δολοφονημένο, με τρόπο που θυμίζει πάρα πολύ μια υπόθεση που δεν τον άφησαν να εξιχνιάσει στο βερολίνο του '32, όταν οι Ναζί ανέβαιναν και το χάος ήταν ante portas ου μην και intra.
Κι ο Μπέρνι, ο καλός παλιόφιλος Μπέρνι αρχίζει σαν τίμιο τεριέ να ακολουθεί τη μύτη του και το ένστικτό του, με ένα πείσμα που πάντα, με νομοτελειακή ακρίβεια, τον οδηγεί στην αλήθεια, στον ξυλοδαρμό του, τον παρολίγον θάνατό του και την πύρρεια νίκη που του είναι τόσο γνωστή η πικρή της γεύση.

As a retired History teacher I can only wish that I had known about this amazing series of 'Berlin Noir' Bernie Gunther novels, whilst I was still in post, developing young minds, and opening them to the wonders of historical fiction that is both informative (historically accurate) and that really does illuminate the past in such convincing fashion.

I got this as a giveaway and I'm glad I did because how did Philip Kerr slip under my thriller radar?
Our protagonist here is a private detective by the name of Bernie Gunther, an ex-cop with a wise-cracking, sarcastic sense of humor. It took a little while but once I saw what his personality was like I got more into the book.
An old case from Berlin turns around and bites Bernie in the ass years later in Argentina. The story was interesting and well-written with believable twists and set at a good pace. Bernie is a smart cookie with none of that "I ran and shot from the hip" nonsense.
The author does a fine job of setting up scenes and slowly revealing the clues. Highly recommended to all thriller fans. And you don't need to read the earlier books in this series to enjoy this one. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

I don't read Bernie Gunther novels for any purpose other than to have fun. But A QUIET FLAME introduced me to a new subject, the persecution of Jews by the Peronist government of Argentina. It is a sobering subject, which remains controversial and incompletely documented to this day.
In A QUIET FLAME, Bernie has escaped to Argentina to avoid prosecution for his activities as an SS officer during the war. While in Argentina, he is drafted by the local authorities to investigate the disappearance of the daughter of a wealthy former Nazi who has re-established himself in Peronist Argentina. While pursuing his investigation, Bernie interacts with Eva Peron, Josef Mengele, Adolph Eichmann and other villains of history.
Of course, Bernie falls in love along the way. Predictably, the relationship does not end well for Bernie.
But A QUIET FLAME does end well for Bernie's fans. As one of his fans, I am comforted to know that the series is in the capable and talented hands of Philip Kerr, who continues to grow as a writer.

Αν και μου αρεσει παρα πολυ ο συγγραφεας και ο ηρωας του, σε αυτο το βιβλιο δεν ενθουσιαστηκα. Θεωρω οτι ειναι κατωτερο τον αλλο δυο που εχω διαβασει, χωρις ομως να σημαινει οτι ειναι κακο. Εχοντας διαβασει την τριλογια του Βερολινου τα αλλα φαινονται "λιγα", αν και ειναι αρκετα καλα αν ξεχασεις για λιγο ποιος ειναι ο συγγραφεας και τι αλλο εχει γραψει.

I turned to Bernie Gunther after I had a bit of a disaster with another historical thriller, and once again I got what I expected -- an extremely sophisticated mix of noir and historical fiction, with a lot of social commentary and historical insight.
As in the other Gunther novels, there are parts that are a bit "over the top". For example, it's hard to imagine one rather close-contact scene between Bernie and a famous rock-star politician happening in a real-life private detective's life, even if he is a legend. There are also some amazing coincidences which would make sense only if Argentina had a population of less than a hundred people...
All this is easily forgiven by Bernie Gunther fans. Personally, the only reason I don't get another one right away is because I want to space these gems out.

Una delle migliori puntate della saga di Bernie Gunther. L'ambientazione argentina anni '50 non toglie nulla al consueto pathos ma aggiunge se possibile, una nota ulteriore di drammaticita' grazie alla luce gettata su fatti storici poco conosciuti quanto terribili. Il regime di Juan e Evita Peron, le uccisioni di massa, le torture sistematiche, la dittatura plebiscitaria, tutto e' ben descritto e ambientato con maestria. Anche il tono generale della narrazione e' molto piu' apprezzabile di quello dei libri immediatamente precedenti, grazie a una quanto mai opportuna moderazione dello stile colloquiale di Bernie. Meno battute e piu' riflessioni, il nostro eroe ha smesso di somigliare pericolosamente a un improbabile investigatore privato californiano.

December 20, 2019A book for our times, though it takes place in Argentina in 1950 and Germany, 1932-34. The pre-war environment of Berlin and Germany is painted in such a way as to make me realize how very much like the current US and UK situation it was. The description of the slow but insidious way that evil managed to permeate Germany, once renowned as a land of culture and freedom, reminded me of the slippery path we’re on now, and made me shudder. As usual, Kerr’s understanding of human frailty keeps one reading on, as the ever tightening plot unfolds.

Another tale of Bernie Gunther and as it happens it seems I am reading the series backwards, which does not matter to much as the books can be read in any sequence and are easy to pick up and read as stand alone.
Bernie Gunther arrives in Argentina of the Perones after having escaped Europe with the help of ODESSA, the organisation aimed at helping Nazis escape Europe after the war. As always mr. Kerr does write about some episodes in and around the WWII that are interesting and not all that well known and a post war Argentina with a Juan Peron and his wife Evita running the country gets a fairly dark shadow thrown upon it which does take the fun out of that popular musical of Evita Peron.
Argentina and some of its neighbouring countries are apparent a safe haven for escaped Nazis and as we begin the story one of Bernie's fellow travelers seems to be a certain Mengele, now that name made me sit up and take notice. Gunther gets drawn into an investigation by some important person in the police department, who turns out to be much more, concerning missing girls who were found mutilated at a later date. The interesting fact for Bernie is the fact that he had a similar case working for the Berlin police just before the Nazi putsch. And he never got to finish or close the case.
The story in the book runs on two tracks Berlin just before Germany fell into the hands of the Nazis and Argentina of the dictatorship of Peron. And both have a lot in common, more than one would expect. And Bernie does his job even at his own expense and his own inability to keep his mouth shut at appropriate times.
One of the better parts of the Bernie Gunther books is the history he uses in the stories. This one tells you a lot more about Argentina and the Nazis that lived there and their influence on the South American nations. It leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth the next time you'll see Evita the musical.

While this book is a smoothly written thriller it does leave you with a lot of questions about all those fair haired beautiful women that cheered their South American teams on during the World championship football in Brasil this year. It seems to be almost as scary as the war itself this aftermath in another part of the world.
Great read, intelligent historical thriller that is well worth your time.
Bernie Gunther arrives in Argentina of the Perones after having escaped Europe with the help of ODESSA, the organisation aimed at helping Nazis escape Europe after the war. As always mr. Kerr does write about some episodes in and around the WWII that are interesting and not all that well known and a post war Argentina with a Juan Peron and his wife Evita running the country gets a fairly dark shadow thrown upon it which does take the fun out of that popular musical of Evita Peron.
Argentina and some of its neighbouring countries are apparent a safe haven for escaped Nazis and as we begin the story one of Bernie's fellow travelers seems to be a certain Mengele, now that name made me sit up and take notice. Gunther gets drawn into an investigation by some important person in the police department, who turns out to be much more, concerning missing girls who were found mutilated at a later date. The interesting fact for Bernie is the fact that he had a similar case working for the Berlin police just before the Nazi putsch. And he never got to finish or close the case.
The story in the book runs on two tracks Berlin just before Germany fell into the hands of the Nazis and Argentina of the dictatorship of Peron. And both have a lot in common, more than one would expect. And Bernie does his job even at his own expense and his own inability to keep his mouth shut at appropriate times.
One of the better parts of the Bernie Gunther books is the history he uses in the stories. This one tells you a lot more about Argentina and the Nazis that lived there and their influence on the South American nations. It leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth the next time you'll see Evita the musical.

This is the fifth Bernie Gunther novel. Bernie is an ex-Berlin police detective, ex-PI and ex-member of Himmler’s SS – the last reluctantly. (Bernie was given an offer he couldn’t refuse, but you’ll have to read the series for that story). He is also a very likeable protagonist, reminiscent of Chandler’s Philip Marlowe, even with his Nazi past. In the series the reader meets historical figures and the author chronicles historical events while Bernie solves crimes during these turbulent times.
In A Quiet Flame, it’s 1950 and Bernie, falsely accused of being a war criminal and with several other ex-Nazis – including Adolf Eichmann – is seeking exile in Juan Peron’s Argentina. Looking for work and Argentinean citizenship, Bernie is approached by a local policeman and given another offer he can’t refuse – investigating a series of murders of young girls which is very reminiscent of an unsolved case Gunther worked in Berlin eighteen years earlier. Bernie agrees and soon finds himself involved in the political intrigue of his new home while finding disturbing clues leading him back to his previous case in Germany and his fellow German exiles. This book jumps back in forth in time between 1932 and the 1950’s - all handled very effectively with flashbacks.
Just like the previous books in the series this is an excellent read. You don’t have to read the earlier books in the series to enjoy A Quiet Flame but it sure helps. And my guess is if you do start here, you will want to read the earlier books – the first three are collected under one cover “Berlin Noir”.

Having read three of Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels before I felt very confident I was going to enjoy 'A Quiet Flame'.
It lived up to expectations. Not quite as good as 'Prague Fatale' by the same author but I can't see that being topped.
This time the story is split between the hunt for a child killer in Berlin in 1932 and the search for a missing teen in Buenos Aires eighteen years later.
Gunther is hiding out in Argentina like a lot of his ex-SS colleagues and is roped into working for the secret police there in return for medical treatment.
Needless to say nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted.
I was torn whether to give this a four or five star rating. It's worth more than four but isn't a five. Very enjoyable though!
Eventually I'll end up reading all the stories in this series.

I hate to say it but Philip Kerr has lost his touch. His trilogy "Berlin Noir" stood out for it Raymond Chandler-esque prose. It was tough, hard boiled, and super interesting becaues of the peak behind the scenes setting of Nazi era Germany. But this latest one... I don't know what to say. Its as if he read this fascinating book on Nazis in Argentina and tried to put a mystery into it but really just wanted to tell us what he had researched. There was no tension, no snap, no cynical hard boiled Bernie who learned hard lessons... just lots of exposition about the rumors about what the Nazis and the Argentines conspired to do with a very light story laid on top. I miss Berlin Noir.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this superb series? Bernie is on top form in a tale split between 1932 Berlin and 1950 Buenos Aires. There's plenty of action and the usual heavy dose of sarcasm, cynicism and humour. (A good thing, given the darkness of the plot.)

Καταπληκτικό βιβλίο με απίστευτα ανατριχιαστικό υλικό. Ο Κερ έκανε άλλη μια φορά το θαύμα του και έκανε γνωστό ένα ακόμα τρομακτικό κομμάτι της ναζιστικής ιστορίας. Βερολίνο 1932 και Μπουένος Άιρες 1950. Ο αντισημιτισμός σε Γερμανία αλλά και σε Αργεντινή. Για μένα το καλύτερο βιβλίο της χρονιάς!

3.5 or 4? This is an interesting look at Germany during the rise of Hitler and also of post WWII in Argentina.I was already familiar with the build up to Hitler. Kerr shows the terrible mess Germany was in after WWI. Germany was doomed to experience upheaval, but mass extermination of Jews, disabled people, Gypsies, etc.? How does any civilized country rot from inside so quickly? Kerr shows us some of the reasons, and Bernie carries this as a deep, painful burden. This is a redeeming quality for him.
I was not aware of what was going on in Argentina during and after the war. Unfortunately, Argentina took some very cruel and deadly lessons from the Nazis.
Bernie is a mix of uncouth, sexist thoughts, and sometimes behavior, toward women. This is true in all of the Bernie books I have read (4). He can also be kind and considerate. I do get tired of the quips. Kerr overdoes that and they are rarely as clever as he probably intends.
The character of Anna, the young Jewish woman he helps, is annoying and naive. Walk away, Bernie!! She is just not believable. Her character definitely lost Kerr a star.

My last Bernie Gunther novel. The book for well over half the novel followed two tracks. Argentina, 1950, and Berlin, 1932. Bernie, being former SS, is sort of on the run along with real Nazis who are definitely on the run. Destination: Buenos Aires. Evidently Kerr built much of the novel around a book regarding the escaping Nazis. Cool, Boys of Brazil, Marathon Man, I'm listening. The Argentine interest in fascism, embodied in President Peron and his rock star wife, Evita, is pretty well done, probably because they're offstage most of the novel. Bernie does have one memorable encounter with Evita that I thought was one of the better stretches in the Argentina portion of the book. That said, the Argentina part of the book is collection of tissue-thin improbabilities. What does buoy things along is the Berlin and Munich parts of the story, which occur in 1932. Kerr seems on much surer ground, with the flow of the story and the utter evil the Nazis are portrayed effectively. But this only last so long, and the Argentina part of the story takes over. It's at this point that the reader is introduced to Anna Yagubsky, a beautiful young Jewish/Catholic Argentine lawyer, and Bernie's love interest. She's searching for a missing aunt and uncle, both Jewish. This hints at Peron seeking to be a Hitler mini-me. But that point I had lost interest. Anna Yagubsky is one of the most ridiculous and unbelievable characters I've encountered in some time. The wheels literally fall off this novel with a 100 pages to go. I thought about giving this one star, but the Berlin portions of the novel are excellent.
