Good Morning and Good Night is the personal story of Margaret Brooke - Ranee Margaret of Sarawak. Born Margaret de Windt on October 9th 1849 in Paris. She spent her early years in France, with her parents and great-grandmother, Baroness de Windt, at Chateau d’Epinay-sur-Orge. In 1859, fearing the political situation in France, the family moved to England, where they lived at Blunsdon Hall in Wiltshire. When she was 13 Margaret’s father was killed in a riding accident; this led, some years later, to a visit by Charles Brooke, who had recently become the Rajah of Sarawak - inheriting the title from his uncle James Brooke. This visit was originally made with the prospect of marrying Margaret’s widowed mother. However, Charles, proposed to Margaret and they were married in 1869 when she was 20 years old, he was 40 years old at the time Thus Margaret became the Ranee of Sarawak. Good morning and Good Night tells the story of this marriage and of Margaret’s life in Sarawak where she came to love the country and its people. She writes of how she enjoyed the company of the Malay as well as the English women and of her love for the culture and nature of Sarawak. She talks of her respect for her husband despite the difficulties of the marriage and of her admiration for the way in which he governed his country. The Ranee writes of her family, the tragedy of losing her first three children to cholera when they were very young and when their second family of three sons came along she decided to bring them up in England. This personal story continues with her life in England where she lived into old age.
