A wonderful story of generosity, of diversity, of kindness!
A lonely little girl is living by the sea and her only friends are found things on the beach: shells, sand dollars, hermit crabs—and some whales she has to leave behind every evening. Since the sea was magical, the whales created friends for the little girl, friends with the qualities of the sea creatures, friends who could go home with her at night. Three playful dachshunds to make the girl happy! What a story of generosity, of thoughtfulness, of diversity, of kindness. I’m a long way from being a child, but I loved this "tall tale" and the colorful print words sprinkled throughout were an extra treat. Children can learn all about sea creatures, which are accurately described, and can see that they share qualities with animals and that differences are not as great as they might think. Highly recommended!

This is the tale of a young girl who spends lots of time at the beach. She is lonely because she does not have a friend to play with. She enjoys the sea creatures she encounters, but alas, they cannot come home with her.

The sea creatures, seeing how sad she is, take it upon themselves to create a friend for her. They work together to figure out which sea creature attributes would work best for a land friend. In the end the Dachshund is created.

This author has promise, but this story has the same problem most people who try to write children's books have: it's trite. The story is quite verbose, using little useful dynamic vocabulary which is a must in books for children. The dynamic vocab included in this title are, for the most part, inappropriately used. The use of multi-colored text is a good idea not used wisely: to use the "rainbow" of colors to spell out the word rainbow is a great idea, but children are going to have a really hard time seeing those yellow letters. Also, there seems to be an attempt at giving a bit of info on each sea animal, but there is no consistency; not all animals are represented equally.

The story is beautifully illustrated by Scott Ward.

A good start. This author would find it quite useful to get an editor.

Disappointing

Mostly about sea animals. Tiny bit about dachshunds toward the end. Was very disappointed. Hoped to read about awesomeness of weenie dogs

How Dachshunds Came to Be: A Tall Tale about a Short Long Dog by Kizzie Elizabeth Jones is a mythical story about how Dachshunds were created. The reader is introduced to a little girl who loves to play with her sea creature friends. One day, the girl becomes sad because her friends are preparing to migrate to warmer waters for the winter.

The girl’s sea creature friends decide that since they cannot stay with her, they will create an animal that can. Each friend contributes a personal characteristic to the creature. What magical beast do they create? Dachshunds!

Will the little girl like the Dachshunds? More importantly, will the Dachshunds like her?
I thought this book was a fun read. I do wish that the story would have been a bit longer. I feel that it ended quite abruptly after the girl is gifted the Dachshunds. I would have liked to see more interaction between the girl and her newfound friends.

Additionally, I would have liked to have a little more background information about the little girl. Is she living alone on the beach? What happened to her family? If she has a family, what do they think of the Dachshunds?

Scott Ward’s illustrations are simply delightful! I love his use of vibrant colors. Ward’s depiction of Dachshunds is spot on and I love the characters that he has created. My favorite illustration is the blueprint of the sea creatures. The detail of the illustration blew me away.

Overall, this book will delight animal lovers of all ages.
