In the second book of "Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler" which I won through Goodreads Giveaways Chris Mosquera again ingeniously takes a crime story and flips it as MBA, Law and PhD graduates combine their expertise developing a highly profitable global smuggling and money laundering syndicate to support their philanthropy pursuits.

In this plot which begins in New York in 1978 Damian Garcia after meeting drifter and ex-military soldier Tony Rivers and his cat Riley at Rosie's Sweet Shoppes dec In the second book of "Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler" which I won through Goodreads Giveaways Chris Mosquera again ingeniously takes a crime story and flips it as MBA, Law and PhD graduates combine their expertise developing a highly profitable global smuggling and money laundering syndicate to support their philanthropy pursuits.

In this plot which begins in New York in 1978 Damian Garcia after meeting drifter and ex-military soldier Tony Rivers and his cat Riley at Rosie's Sweet Shoppes decides to expand their product lines to include the finest Thai marijuana and the purest LSD-25 acid which can be converted into Park Roads cigarettes, opium dipped marijuana sticks and Aspirin Acid pills. With organizational assets in their shared brainpower and tight family network, Damian uses Tony's expertise to not only bring back the drugs from Southeast Asia but to help build a long haul transportation company while he works on developing a relationship with the Nations. In return for using the reserve Damian agrees to put money into their programs building hope and their native pride, and in doing so finds a safe haven for his family if O/H Inc comes under attack for any reason.

Yet for all his plans and staying out of the limelight Damian discovers that there is a traitor in their midst, someone who's determined to see him dead so he can take over the organization. The story heats up when Damian and Tony are roughed up and threatened by DEA Commander Christopher as well as later by rogue narcotics cops intent on murdering him until Captain Gray Hawk and the reservation police intervene. With a kill order out on his life, Damian begins to ferret out information on a conniver he once thought of as a friend.

Although the plot focuses for the first part of the book on next steps in the drug smuggling and money-laundering business intensity and suspense heighten when a kill order is put out on Damian's life and he begins to search for clues to their identity, drawing on his connection to mafia Don Mario Anacapri. The concept for this story is innovative, captivating and tense as you wait for Damian and his crew to make a mistake that will bring the legal authorities sniffing around. Although well-written and smoothly paced I did find the dialogue unnatural and hoped for more action although Damian is a firm believer in violence as a last resort; yet that could change with the cliff-hanger at the end.

Infusing the story with high-energy Chris Mosquera has created characters who are multi-faceted and not easily forgotten like Damian Garcia the talented and principled entrepreneur who's smart and friendly but wary and often paranoid. A conscientious family man who's determined to protect those he loves he makes provision for their safety knowing the riskiness of his business. Lori Wilson his wife and an accountant is just as savvy in business but can be devious and dangerous. Tony Rivers is calm and smooth under pressure, able to quickly solve problems before they become an issue. He doesn't take orders well but is trustworthy, understanding the code of silence that's important to the business. Gershwin Grain is the lawyer who's cleverness and over-confidence breeds trouble for he and his family.

I enjoyed "Damian Garcia: PhD Drug Smuggler", a well-researched story that's very detailed and I won't hesitate to look for other books in the saga.

It's the story of a drug smuggling ring run by PHDs. It isn't bad, but it seems to reaching for a 1879's style of sleaze, but is really too PC to get there. ...more
