Hooked

Rate this book
From the author of the On the Line and Fire on Ice hockey romance series comes a sultry novel featuring a brooding NHL player who’s hell on skates—and the no-nonsense woman who forces him to clean up his act.

Miranda: Even though I’m broke, putting myself through college, and working two jobs, I’m trying to make the best of it. Meanwhile, Jake Birch, hockey’s hottest bad boy, lives in a luxury hotel in downtown Chicago—and still complains about every little thing in his penthouse. But after I tell him off, instead of getting me fired, Jake requests me as his personal housekeeper. Then he starts flirting with me. Only I’m not flirting back . . . at least, I’m trying not to. Did I mention that he’s hockey’s hottest bad boy?

Jake: I’ve met the best woman at the worst possible time. Miranda is the fire to my ice—a sexy, charmingly candid spark who breaks down my walls and reminds me what it’s like to feel again. But I’m being forced to date my team owner’s daughter to keep my job, so I can’t be caught with Miranda. Still, we’re getting closer—until Miranda finds out about my “girlfriend.” And that’s not the only secret I’ve been keeping. But Miranda’s the one I want . . . even if she doesn’t believe me.

I don't even know where to begin. Let's just say Hooked really hooked me. It was cute, sexy, and angsty in equal measure.

Miranda Carr and Jake Birch's story is one that you can categorize as a fairytale kind of love story. Miranda is unlike any other girl. She's hardworking and goal-driven. Working in housekeeping at Dupont Tower as well as at Lucky's nightclub while studying at the same time to pursue a business degree is such a tough thing to do. For her, her dreams and ambitions are more important than relationships. Until she met the super hot but grumpy ice hockey player Jake Birch. She wasn't supposed to fall in love with him, but their connection was too strong to deny so it wasn't easy for her to resist him.

I totally loved the chemistry between these two. It was too apparent and strong. There was no moment in this book where I didn't find myself swooning over how cute they are as a couple. Both Jake and Miranda were likable characters and despite some of their flaws, it wasn't difficult for me to connect with them. Jake had issues and personal baggage but he was easily redeemable which I really loved. I also loved the way Miranda cared about Jake and supported him all the way until he was emotionally healed.

The story was well-balanced in a way and the sports aspect was also on-point. Although the romantic development between the characters moved a little faster than I anticipated, it was understandable since the story's pacing was also fast. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves New Adult sports romance!

Sweet, fun and sexy great elements for a great read.
“When I’m with you, everything else melts away. I don’t obsess about hockey or get irritated by anything. There’s just you, and that gorgeous smile I’m hooked on.”

NHL star Jake Birch’s womanizing ways have caught up him and now he’s being strong-armed into dating the owner’s daughter or face the bench and it couldn’t have happened at a more inconvenient time. After too many years of women throwing themselves at him because of his money and star status he’s finally met the one who makes him feel alive, sees through his façade and won’t take his nonsense. Can he be enough for her? Can he convince her to take a chance on them?
“The more I get to know her, the more interested I get. Beneath the sass and spark I like so much, Miranda is a strong, driven woman. Before meeting her, I couldn’t have put into words exactly what I wanted in a woman. I can now, though. I want her.”

Miranda wants nothing to do with men and has one goal and one goal only which has nothing to do with hockey or a sexy bad boy. She’s working hard to put herself through college. But while cleaning Jake’s hotel room she tramples upon his extreme idiosyncrasies and after his complaints roll right off her he calls management… to request her a his own housekeeper and it’s getting hard to ignore him when the delicious man keeps showing up at her place of work, offering to help her with school and showing her how charming he really can be. Can she have a Cinderella happy ending with him?
“Chicago’s star hockey player is going to have a committed relationship with his hotel maid?

I’ve only read one other book by Brenda Rothert but it left a good lasting impression so when I saw this Cinderella + hockey combo it was a no brainer and it certainly delivered. The writing is sound with an effortless flow, great characterization and most of all I loved the sizzling attraction and fun back and forth between Miranda and Jake that had me smiling from the start.
“I guess I kind of needed to know that”—he looks away—“it’s okay for me to fall in love with you.”
“It’s okay to fall in love with me, Jake. I’ll take you and love you back just as you are.”

Even though the banter between Jake and Miranda made me smile in the beginning, it was mostly because of her. Miranda is self-assured, strong, smart and sassy. Those are a lot of “s” words! She didn’t want his money, wasn’t impressed by his fame and didn’t put up with his nonsense. She was really easy to like.

Jake on the other hand didn’t just have his manwhore reputation to contend with, he was obsessive bordering on “you need help buddy!” But once we start to get to know him and the things that drive him, we get to see a completely charming and romantic man with a great heart hidden behind tall and thick walls. I felt his pain and fell for him just like Miranda.

I very much enjoyed Jake’s relentless pursuit of Miranda. It was fun, flirty, sexy and touching and the hockey backdrop gives their story a layer of excitement. As they start to open up and confide in each other, their relationship builds both physically and emotionally. And in Jake’s case, he’s able to face his fears and past with Miranda’s loving support.

Hooked by Brenda Rothert is a standalone contemporary hockey romance told from both points of view with a happy ending. It’s heart melting sweet, swoony, sexy and endearing and left me with a wide smile.

5 hunky hockey hottie ;) stars

Cocky NHL player meets broken, humble woman. What's new under the sun, right? No, wrong. So, so wrong.
Sure, the blurb may sound cliché, but there's nothing unoriginal or boring about this book.

Let's proceed with order:
Jake Birch: at first, he got me curling my nose because he was being super assholish, and got me: "ahem... am I supposed to fall for him?" But then things changed really fast as we got into his mind. I loved how he realized almost immediately that he wanted Miranda and not just in the physical way. Also, we discover many other facets of his personality, namely his soft, broken and altruistic sides. His past story, which we discover only gradually, is a major part of who he is, having shaped the man he's now and having created also some obstacles in their relationship. It was honest, though, without any unnecessary drama-llama. To sum it up, Jake may seem an arrogant asshole, but in truth he's one hell of a book boyfriend, caring, sweet. Sure, he fucks up, but it stems from his inexperience when it comes to committed relationships rather, not from arrogance or mean intentions.

Miranda: she's the kind of heroine you want to be friends with. I simply adored her. Her witty banter with Jake, her sarcasm, her being solidly grounded on Earth. She works two jobs to pay for her tuition and I loved that she was a maid. It made for interesting dynamics with Jake at first. It was like a modern Cinderella tale, if Cinderella didn't put up with any of the Prince's bullshit and was a sarcastic spitfire. She was a highly relatable character, being burned by love and focused on her education rather than on finding her "forever". Sassy, yet sweet.

As a couple, Jake and Miranda are simply outstanding. They are best friends first, but their chemistry is off the charts and we have some really hot moments. . They slip into a relationship kind of naturally, going out on dates, spending time together. And as the story proceeds you can really tell they are made to be together. No one of them is perfect, but they complement each other.

The angst level was really low and the story was highly focused on these two characters and how they got together. The only other significant element was a certain psychotic bitch.

Hailey: now, saying that I loved her would pass as weird. So I'll say that I loved the role she played. Generally speaking, deranged characters are right up my alley, but I haven't read of many "psychotic" females, while have come across plenty of stalkers, maniacs and such of the male gender. Anyway, what was so great about her is that at the beginning you don't realize how crazy she is. Sure, her oral skills leave a lot to be desired and she's a clingy, needy lass, but apart from that I didn't think much of it. Then, as the story progressed, I realized something was not quite right with her. What I appreciated even more was that, when the story finally came to the point that her "relationship" (do not take it literally. If you read the book you'll understand) with Jake came out, Miranda and Jake were already at a point where it was clear that he would never cheat on her, so they resolved things quickly and with maturity (Plus, just gotta love a guy willing to beg on his knees, right?).

All in all, it was a great read. The style if definitely more than good and the dialogues witty and captivating. The characters will sojourn in my heart for a long time and I'll make sure to pick up other books by Brenda Rothert.

P.S.: I don't know why, but with Miranda's economic status and the amazing MTB relationship, it reminded me of The Hurricane by Prescott. Just thought I'd put it out there, in case you wanted to check it out. Although, warning: the plot is completely different, darker and features a fighter, not a NHL player.

***3,75 "Hooked On..." stars***

This is the second book of Brenda Rothert that i have read and sure, it won't be the last....
I enjoyed and this story very much, but to be totally honest with you, there was something that it was bothering me in the story.... Some things were so abrupt and that left me confused at the end...

I needed more explanation and more time for the solutions, i think!!!!
Overall, it was a nice story with great heroes and intriguing plot...
And, hell, there was a cocky, hot hockey player in it and I am such a succer for those kind of guys!!!!

From one hand, we are having Miranda....
She is working her ass off between two jobs as a hotel maid and a bartender, she is going to school and she is sworn away from any kind of relationship with the opposite genre since she had a bad experience in the past...

The poor girl has no time for anything else and one of her bosses are a real asshole toward her...
But i liked her character very much.... She was sassy, opiniated and she didn't tolerate bullshit from noone.
And then one day, Jake Birch stepped into her path and everything turned upside down...

"I get mixed signals from Jake. His words tell me he's not sure about us, but his warm, affectionate gaze tells me he's all in."

From the other hand, we are having Jake...
He is famous, gorgeous, sexy, cocky, arrogant and a little bit of an asshole toward everyone...
He is a hockey player, the star of the league and captain of his team...
Hockey is his biggest love and he is very religious to what he is doing...

He is a player and he doesn't have any steadiness in this area of his life...
He is also having his own problems and secrets that are making him more closed off!!!
For the next six weeks, Jake is about to live in Dupont hotel as his new apartment is under construction and there's a surprise waiting for him... A surprise with beautiful curves, sassy mouth and a maid's uniform....

"With Miranda... it's different. I've never chased a woman the way I feel myself starting to chase her. I have no idea what I want with her, I just know I want it really fucking bad."

Jake and Miranda are starting with the wrong foot but noone can't deny that there is a great attraction between them...

And from that moment, Jake is pushing and Miranda is pushing back, but for how long???
None of them was waiting for the other... but they can't seem to stay away from each other...

But there are some problems that standing between them...

"When I'm with you, everything else melts away. I don't obsess about hockey or get irritated by anything. There's just you, and that gorgeous smile I'm hooked on. I think I could have fun with you anywhere."

Their status for once, Miranda's trusting issues and the results of a past hook-up for Jake with some girl that he shouldn't have got involved....
And now, Jake is forced to date a woman that he doesn't want when for the first time, he actually wants to be with a woman...

So, what will happen with that matter???
Will Miranda and Jake got past everything and get together for good or all these problems will tear them apart???

"Miranda is the light, helping me find strength I never knew I had."

I liked very much Jake and Miranda...
In the beginning, i didn't like the way Jake was handing the matter of Hailey, but i liked his determination in some point. I liked how he opened up to Miranda and when we discovered the other side of him... I liked that he wasn't backing up with Miranda and he was taking his time with her...

As for Miranda, i really admired her for everything she was accomplishing on her own and i liked how proud she were... I liked that she could put Jake in his place and that she opened up her heart to him...
Those two were a great match and i liked them, even though I was having minor problems to be persuaded by some of their actions...

"I've never felt closer to another person. And while it feels amazing, I see what Jake means about it being scary. I feel myself falling hard for him, and I don't want to be cautious about it anymore. Jake's walls were stronger than mine, and if he was willing to break them down for me, I want to give him everything I am in return.
Who am I kidding? I already have."
{Miranda}

"I love you, Miranda. With all of my beat-up, imperfect heart, I love you." {Jake}

As for Hailey??? What can i say about her??? This girl was crazy!!! C-R-A-Z-Y!!!
And I was mad with Jake's coach that he forced him to do something like that!!!

It was wrong from many aspects!!!

****4 STARS****

I think I'm going to have to get into hockey. I never followed it before but if this book is any indication the men alone are worth checking out!!!

I enjoyed this book. Not too much drama but the right amount of chemistry, which is much appreircated.

The plot is simple and expected....poor girl going through college, rich sports play and lots of really hot sex....not to shabby.

Jake loves hockey, it's his life and willing to do anything to keep himself in the game. Too bad for him it involves dating the owner's daughter. He doesn't really care for this but what can he do? Of course he finds someone he really wants to get to know during this time, Miranda. He doesn't want to lose Miranda but he knows she's not up for sharing.

Miranda is a beautiful, confident women who knows where she is going and how to get there. She never expected to me Jake but when she does, she can't deny their connection.

Their relationship progresses in a natural way.

Here's the problem....how is Jake going to play by the rules of hockey when his heart has a different playbook in mind.

He risks losing his girl and his career. Poor baby.

He just wants Miranda to give him another chance and he is willing to give her his heart if she will let him start all over again.

I enjoyed this book. It was fun and sexy and a wee bit spicy. Perfect!!!

Get this book!! It's sweet and a little bit dirty. It's got banter, drama, emotions, and a brooding and moody hero to boot.

This story is about Jake. He's a successful hockey player. He's the Captain of his team and he's dealing with some emotional demons that usually have him acting as more of an A-hole than a gentleman. The heroine is Miranda, a young woman who's working two jobs to make ends meet while putting herself through Business school. She's been burned one too many times and has all but lost faith in mankind.

These characters became friends before becoming lovers. They instinctually knew that this time was different. That their time together was special. And I found the evolution of their relationship beautiful. The author did a great job of throwing in a real wacko to stir the pot, but overall, this story was low on angst and the emphasis was placed on the connection between the characters.

I recommend this story to anyone looking for a sweet and sexy sports romance!

Well... It was cute. It isn't anything I haven't read before, but I found it entertaining.

Sexy, humorous, sweet and enjoyable - but it was lacked something that would have made it different. It gave me 'Maid in Manhattan' vibes :)

I received an ARC from Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It takes a lot for Miranda Carr to balance between studying in College and working two jobs as a hotel housekeeper by day and a bartender at night at the same time. Despite financially struggling, she's optimistic and industrious. She dreams to have a luxurious life and she'll not stop working until she reach her goal. Having a relationship isn't her priority .. at the moment.

Jake Birch is a rich, famous, cocky, and pompous NHL player. While staying on the hotel suite, he's fascinated with Miranda when she called him out about his rudeness. Since then, he requested the hotel management that she's the only one who can clean his room and gets to know her more during their encounters. Their conversations are interesting, witty and sweet, he finds Miranda beautiful inside and out. He worked his way to date her by being charming, nice and thoughtful. It was genuine and he intends to keep her. He just needs to be more open about his own issues and feelings.

Hooked is an addictive and sweet sports romance novel and I'm too hooked to put it down. The characters and their relationship are well developed, the story and little drama is entertaining and the romantic scenes are red-hot. I haven't read anything by Brenda Rothert and I like her writing style. Surely, I'm going to read more of her novels.

It was ok. Sexy, sassy and sweet (toward the end) read.
I don’t want to be a party pooper, but

I would have rated the book higher if the hero wouldn’t had been so a*sholish at the beginning. My vengeful heart didn’t melt even after he miraculously transformed into the nice guy. The heroine was nice, I liked her sass and how hard-working she was.

Safety
Sad and touching storyline about H’s brother.
Cute epilogue.

I miss Brenda Rothert books. Majority, I like her works. And Hooked does not disappoint me. Miss Rothert always have this ability to telling a story with such sweetness. Her characters are so endearing sweet and love able. If you ever see Maid In Manhattan, Hooked is similar to that movie.

Jake is NFL player who falls for his hotel maid. Jake has a past where he lost someone. It makes him closed off. I like Jake. He is not typical brooding man whore hero. He has this sensitive side of him that makes him so vulnerable. And I like my hero vulnerable. I also like how Miss Rothert contrast Miranda world and Jake world. Jake world has all that money and fame and yet its like a empty shell. Meanwhile Miranda world is working class but full of love.

What I wish that can be improved is the plot. I want the plot involving Hailey much more dramatic instead of just side dish of the main story.

Overall I enjoy this book very much.

What can i say? Hooked was an enjoyable reading experience but it probably won't stick with me in all honesty. Both Miranda and Jake left the crazy to other folks, luckily, so their relationship was able to proceed without a whole lot of drama. Miranda managed to endear herself to me by NOT using Jake as a sugar daddy and after reading the "let's get naked" times, I'm more than ready to hunt down my very own NHL player a la Jake. How hard can it be?

Thank you to Brenda Rothert for the ARC, kindly provided by Loveswept Publishing for an honest review

Hooked by Brenda Rothert is such a sweet, endearing, and romantic story that captivates the reader with its character development and its dramatic love story. This story, featuring Jake and Miranda as the protagonists, hit the new adult shelves this upcoming holidays; December 6th!

Like your every-so-often sports story, this one had me hooked! HA HA! Get it? Hooked? Yeah, I know I'm not funny. What is so special about this story though, the story of Miranda and Jake is the instant connection they both have with each other. The story is the same as any other, Miranda is in college and is trying her very best to keep with her classes while still holding two steady jobs. One of them being a maid in a high fancy hotel, while the other job is at a bar. Jake is an NHL player (hockey) and he is trying his best to keep his reputation silent, without any drama, without an involvement of the media, and most of all without being kicked out of the team.

Miranda has a past, (as well-being cliché) she stopped dating due to her previous relationship where the guy she dated, Nick cheated on her. This problem arises towards Miranda and Jake's relationship because of what Jake has to do to stay in the team. (No spoilers, read the story to find out.) Their chemistry though, is very strong and really romantic. You don't expect for Jake to be a romantic when you first encounter his pov in the beginning of the story, but his character development is present and it's an interesting development to witness.

The important point of the story of how Jake has to keep his other relationship a secret really bothers me. Yes, it does bring a sense of drama to the story but even though it is a cliché action, an already told part, there was simply something not entertaining or flowy about the fake relationship. I believe it bothered me the most because when ever his mind came around the idea of telling Miranda about the fake relationship, it wasn't very often. So to the reader, it gives the impression that he doesn't care if he keeps it a secret. I guess that's just something to process...

In general, Branda Rothert did a wonderful job with this story. It's a nice read that I enjoyed 100% reading!

4 Stars. Think Maid in Manhattan but the NHL version (And set in Chicago instead of NYC)

This is my first Brenda Rothert book and wow! I'm thoroughly impressed! I literally just finished this book and I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face. It was such an enjoyable ride, beginning to end and I was hooked! (no pun intended).

The premise intrigued me from the get go. I'm a sucker for hockey romances and cinderella type plots. This book delivers on both counts and it does so in spades. A lot of the times, authors will set a story within a sports world they know nothing about just to cash in the money. The sport they choose, be it football, hockey or soccer or whatever, is there just as a background prop but this book was different. I could tell the author knows her hockey enough to deliver a believable story. She got the ritualistic, superstitious aspect to the sport very well, even if Jake was an extreme case. And if you think it was all about hockey, I can assure you that's not the case. The sports angle never overpowered the story. It beautifully complemented it.

The premise is both simple and intriguing. Miranda Carr works as a maid at the hotel where Jake Birch is staying while his apartment is undergoing renovations. They meet, sparks fly and a beautiful romance ensues. There's a believable set of conflicts that kept me interest through out the story. Jake may be your typical womanizing athlete on the surface, but he carries quite a bit of emotional baggage on his back regarding his estranged family. Miranda is suspicious of men after being burned one too many times. She's hardworking, strong, honest and straightforward, maybe even a bit cynical about men. She doesn't have time or energy to date. There's also the daughter of the owner of Jake's team, who happens to have an unhealthy obsession with him. This further complicates things.

Is this book groundbreaking? Not really. Is it thoroughly unique? Maybe not, but it was so likeable and easy to read, so romantic, heartlfelt and sweet that I couldn't help but love every moment. I adore hockey and I'm a big Chicago Blackhawks fan, so I'm sure that helped as well.

But mainly, the characters were just so nice and so easy to root for. I loved Jake. It was amazing to see his emotional walls coming down due to Miranda. And Miranda was an extremely likeable heroine, worthy of the HEA she got. The epilogue was sweet and wrapped up the story in a neat bow. The story was very well paced and flowed seamlessly. There was just something very grounded and realistic about Jake and Miranda's relationship, even with the fairytale aspect the story had. It satisfied my hockey romance sweet tooth and then more!

Miranda is an incredibly hard working busy woman that doesn't find the time to date since she works two full time jobs and is putting herself through school. While working her job as a maid at a high end hotel Miranda finds herself extremely irritated when she meets hockey's hottest bad boy, Jake Birch, in one of the suites while she's cleaning. However after finding herself telling Jake off with his numerous requests instead of getting her fired he asks for her to become his personal housekeeper throughout his six week stay while his place is being remodeled.

Miranda immediately catches Jake's eye since she is so completely different from the women he meets, she's hardworking and quite feisty not putting up with him at all instead of being star struck. Unfortunately, while Jake is extremely taken with Miranda after meeting her he has a bit of a predicament since he is being forced to date his owner's daughter after a drunken encounter with her previously.

Hooked is a fast paced, standalone, contemporary romance from Brenda Rothert. The story did get a tad predictable in nature with knowing about another relationship taking place with the male main character but it was still a fun read that didn't dwell too much on the controversy this caused and instead mainly focused on the characters getting to know one another and taking a bit of time to do so.

I would warn that this one contains quite of bit of sex and language that may offend some readers that prefer a cleaner read. I would definitely recommend this one for those that don't mind the language and sexual situations, especially to those who are fans of the sexy athletes.

Jack has some deep trust issues and emotionally has cut himself off from caring about anything besides playing hockey and getting laid, that is until he meets Miranda who is working two jobs to put herself through college and one of those jobs happens to be cleaning Jake's penthouse suite at the Dupont. Jake is drawn to Miranda's honesty and strength and she is the only woman who has managed to break down his walls and reminded him how to live again. This is a typical rich playboy, sports star meets poor, struggling girl and sweeps her off her feet, the characters were ok, the story line was mediocre, the sex was hot but very long awaited. Narrated by Kristen Leigh & Lee Samuals.

5 Jake and Miranda Stars

Brenda Rothert is one of my favourite authors because her stories always grab my interest from the first page and her characters are so well written. I love unravelling the layers and getting to know the Hero and heroine and to date she has not disappointed. I also love books about hot hockey players...so again, I was expecting to like this book enormously. I didn't like it. I LOVED it.

Quick Review
Jake is a hugely successful Ice Hockey player. Miranda is working her way through college. They meet when she is his hotel maid and what I loved was that Miranda did not just fall at his feet and into his bed. She has got determination and drive but she also has a very gentle and empathetic side. She becomes his soft place to fall and he really needed that. Sexy, funny , heart wrenching at times - I highly , highly recommend this book. Gorgeous sports romance with a beautiful HEA. No cheating.

MORE DETAILED REVIEW IF YOU WANT TO READ ON.....

Miranda and Jake have very different lifestyles. He is a hot shot, successful and gorgeous hockey player who has the hockey world, fans and women at his feet. He is wealthy, talented and quite honestly, a bit of an arrogant, conceited, obsessive ass. He has one night stands and lives life very much to his own rules. This guy lives, eats, sleeps and breathes hockey.

"Being a hockey player is like a golden ticket to Pussytown. Women who know what I do for a living spread their legs without me even asking them to. I'm not much on puck sluts, but I've done them in a pinch."

Cue eye roll....Now, I may not have painted him in the best light but stick with him - I can tell you that Jake absolutely stole my kindle heart. Through the story his walls come down with Miranda and he was just the loveliest guy with such a vulnerable facet to his character. I wanted to hug him. I was rooting for him all the way. He fell in love with her and it made for a beautiful romance. And some pretty sexy stuff too!

"I guess I kind of needed to know that it's okay for me to fall in love with you."
"It's okay to fall in love with me Jake. I'll take you and love you back just as you are."

Miranda was an absolutely cracking heroine. She is warm and funny and quite self deprecating.

"And now, not only am I going out with a man, I'm going out with a hot, narcissistic NHL player who likes to bang strippers and not call them after. Great idea Miranda. What could go wrong?"

She is studying, working two jobs and is independent to the nth degree. She has an adorable relationship with her Sister (I want Paige to have a book - I don't think she does have one but Ms R...if you're reading ....just sayin'). What I loved the most about Miranda is the fact that she doesn't cave to Jake's demands and drop everything to be with him. She is smitten with him but he never overwhelms her and she is not at all blinded by his wealth and fame. She absolutely does not take any crap from him.

"Miranda doesn't put up with my bullshit, it'd be nice if she'd put up with it just a little today."

Miranda is the kind of person I would pick as a friend. The two of them together are perfectly imperfect. They work so well as a couple and I absolutely believed in them and their HEA.

There is a solid plot and back story to this novel and the writing flows really well. I stayed up til the early hours to finish this and loved every page. Highly recommend to my fellow book junkies who love romance, passion and a book that will leave you with a happy heart.

HEA? Yes. Adorable.
Cheating? No
No scenes with either H/h sleeping with others. These two are very much about each other and Jake falls hard for her from the offset but it's builds up to a spell binding intimacy between them.

"I love you, Miranda. With all of my beat-up , imperfect heart, I love you."

Awwwww.....
Re Read / Listened March 2019 and loved it even more the second time round!
And I did it all over again in May 2021....This book gets better every time.

Not sure what happened to this author but I'll wait on more details before passing judgment on this book. If he doesn't touch the "girlfriend" and she doesn't cause unnecessary drama I might consider it. Depends how bad he grovels and whether she still lets him touch her when she realizes he's been lying.

Hockey star Jake Birch realizes his dress shirt is missing from his hotel room. When he questions the spunky maid Miranda Carr, he gets a little more than he bargained for. Jake is handsome, rich, and cocky. Miranda is sarcastic, hard-working, and beautiful. They’re a match made in romance heaven.

What I liked: I really liked both main characters and the emotional depth Rothbert delivers. On the surface you have a hot, rich athlete who falls for a struggling, but head-strong maid. Initially, I thought “been there; done that”, but there is much more to this story. Rothbert does a phenomenal job building a strong connection between our MCs. There’s more to the story than just a sizzling romance. While I’m not typically a fan of the slow burn technique, it works well here. The writing is superb. There’s a lot of witty banter between Miranda and Jake and I loved every minute of it. Again, the main characters are amazing - Miranda is bold, sarcastic, down to earth and hard-working. Jake is hot, rich, sometimes enigmatic, and cocky, but not in an OTT way. What more can you ask in a hero? It was great experiencing these two great characters come together.
What didn’t work for me: I take all the blame for a couple of my issues with this book, but I couldn’t figure out why Miranda’s sister doesn’t seem as hard up as she is. Why does she have a car and why is Miranda always having to borrow her clothes? I know I’m crazy for even noticing that, but they should be equally “broke” in my opinion. My sister wouldn’t have it any other way LOL. I'm also not a huge a fan of the psycho, whiny, stalker antagonist, but it didn’t detract much from my enjoyment of this book.
Overall, this a great emotional read. The book is well-written, both main characters are likable, and there is a lot of emotional depth.

I loved Hooked by Brenda Rothert!

Sometimes you pick up a book and it's the perfect read for that moment, for me Hooked was that book.
I loved the storyline, it entertained me and I loved the characters Jake and Miranda. They were likable, relatable and I found myself connecting with them both.
I enjoyed watching their relationship develop, they made me laugh, they made me swoon, they frustrated me a little and then they made my heart swoon all over again.

So, I had this one languishing on the TBR pile, totally forgotten until I read a book blurb about it from Sawyer Bennett (one of my go-to hockey romance writers). If Sawyer liked it....

And she was right! I totally loved it!

At first I thought the hero, star hockey player for Chicago ,(hmmm...did the author name the team? I don't remember...) Jake Birch ,was a total asshat. Spoiled, entitled, grouchy...how the hell was he the team's captain. So what if he was a 'player', didn't do relationships, and had a gorgeous face and bod--he wasn't exactly hero material. jake was temporarily living in the Dupont Tower's penthouse suite, while his own luxury condo was being renovated. And that's where he meets our wonderful, spunky heroine, beautiful Miranda Carr.

Miranda works at the Dupont as a hotel maid, as well as going to college part-time, and working another job at a bar. She's a hard working gal and takes no guff from anyone. When she meets jake while cleaning his room (and he's only wearing a towel and a smile), of course her eyes bug out by what she sees, but she doesn't let him know it or let him affect her. She's getting over a breakup that left her very mistrustful of the male species, and she does not need or want an obvious player like Jake in her life. She puts down all his cocky come ons with verbal spars of her own...and jake loves it! Finally, a woman to call him on all his BS. He's intrigued, and vows to have her! But will his own past and his feelings of survivor's guilt (no spoilers) come between their budding relationship?

I loved this fast moving, witty, and steamy story! I loved that Jake evolved after meeting Miranda, and we got to see his softer, caring, generous side. I loved Miranda from the start. She was badly burned from a past relationship, and all she was focused on was work and school. I like how she was trying to better herself, and I loved her spunky attitude. Gradually she let jake it, and when he was able to open up and share things with her...well what do you know, maybe he did want and need a relationship!

I loved the way their sexual relationship developed too. jake wanted to treat Miranda as more than just a hookup. They started as friends with plenty of sexual tension. It was a slow burn whenever they had moments together. And when they finally had the time to truly connect...whew! a match made in sexual heaven.

I loved their whole story arc from getting to know you friends, to lovers, to confidants. Did Jake still have some asshat moments? Yes, I think he will always be a bit of a diva in the locker room with his demands and pregame rituals. But I have a feeling that Miranda doesn't tolerate his sometimes diva behavior at home!

There's a juicy and sweet epilogue to round out their story as well--thank god for that!

Fans of hockey romance-- or sports romance in general--I'm sure you'll like this one. It's well-written, has a great plot with characters you really get to know and understand, and it's super steamy. As an added bonus, I even shed a tear or two.:0

5 I'M HOOKED CROWNS

Hooked by Brenda Rothert is a sweet and seductive, an enjoyable read that left this reader with a smile on her face.

The characters drive the plot of this story and are pertinent to what makes the story so much fun. Jake is your stereo-typical sports hero when the reader first meets him: arrogant, a playboy, and temperamental. But his development and evolution as a character throughout the course of the story make him endearing. His tragedy and the resulting outcome has damaged Jake, and the reader becomes sympathetic to his struggles as well as the walls he was erected to protect himself. His interactions with Miranda only serve to make Jake more lovable. He never once mistreats her. He reveres her, protects her, and cares for her because of what she provides for him. Just like Jake, readers will also love this heroine. Miranda is strong and independent, taking on two jobs and putting herself through school. She knows who she is and what she wants, and she is unwilling to settle for less. She does struggle to take help from Jake as the story progresses, but this ties into who she is as a person. Readers will root for these two characters from page one, wanting to see them get their happily-ever-after.

The physically chemistry between Jake and Miranda is good, but what really sold them to me as a couple is their emotional chemistry. Brenda Rothert spends a considerable amount of the novel developing them as a couple with very little physical intimacy, and it pays off. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Jake romance Miranda, being privy to all their get-to-know-you conversations, and seeing Miranda help Jake move on from his past. Their relationship, the actual development as a couple, was a true joy to watch, and the physical intimacy, which is also good, is just the icing on the cake.

The plot of this story is fun and sweet and exhibits romance at its finest. Light on the drama and angst, readers get to spend their time seeing two good people fall in love. Are there bumps and obstacles along the way? Sure, but these obstacles are natural and to be expected based on the story line created by the author. The development of the characters, the evolution of Jake and Miranda as a couple, and the resolution of this story absolutely make this book worth it.

Hooked by Brenda Rothert is romance at its finest. I loved every second of the journey she took me on and the characters she created. And, even though she didn't leave any indication for more books from the cast of characters, I secretly wish for more, which, to me, is a sign of a great book!

I was introduced to the writing of Brenda Rothert through her co-authorship of Dirty Work with Chelle Bliss, and when I saw that she had a new book and that it was a sports romance, I was in.

Is it strange that I love hockey romances but have never seen a game? I can’t be the only one.

Hooked is the Cinderella story of down and out woman who is working two jobs to put herself through college and her Prince Charming, team captain and womanizer, Jake.

While his apartment is undergoing construction, Jake has moved into the hotel where Miranda works, as a maid.... After a few interactions where Miranda puts Jake in his place, he finds himself drawn to the hard-working-beauty who doesn’t seem to care a bit about his fame or his fortune.

Hooked was a sweet, heated and sexual tension filled read. It had a little drama, but it was not heavily weighted down with it. And although I did really enjoy the read, I wanted a bit more connection to both Jake and Camila. They both were fantastic, but neither stole my heart completely. But where that connection might have misfired a bit for me, I found myself loving the witty banter between these two and really loved just getting lost in their story for a few hours.

This was a fast- sweet read. One that you read after you have read so many dark books and would like to get a mind-cleanse. The story guarantees a sexy alpha, a tough heroine and HEA.. there is also a little humor too.

You certainly can't go wrong with this book.

"Every once in a while, in the middle of our ordinary lives, love gives us a fairy tale.”

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved fairy tales--from Cinderella to Beauty in the Beast to modern romances that feel like fairy tales. They are magical and mesmerizing, as they transport me to a wonderful fantasy world that sometimes feels very raw and real. Hooked by Brenda Rothert is a heated and heartfelt hockey romance, a fairy tale full of feels. Oh did my FEELS FLY SKY HIGH!!!

Hooked hypnotized me from the start. This fun and flirty romance rendered an onslaught of emotions that oozed out, entangling me like a puck to the net, where I was caught and claimed by everything Hooked.

Hot captain for Chicago's hottest hockey team, Jake Birch, has to focus on his game and the coveted title.

"Being a hockey player, it’s like a golden ticket to Pussytown.”

Blue-grey-eyed, dark-haired, tall, and muscular Jake can’t afford any distractions, especially the gorgeous dark-haired and whiskey-eyed goddess with mile-long legs who happens to clean his hotel's penthouse suite.

"Hockey is my life. I eat, breathe, and sleep this sport, allowing very little distraction.”

No…he must keep his head in the game and stop thinking about his new beautiful distraction: the fire to his ice.

Miranda is beautiful, smart, and utterly cynical. Burned by men too many times to count, she doesn't trust them plus they are a distraction she neither needs nor can afford as her focus is finishing college.

"You like the view?”

“It’s okay, I guess.”

“Want me to drop the towel so you can get a closer look?”

Miranda may have sworn off men but it doesn't mean she can't enjoy the view of the Adonis who she catches in a compromising position. Miranda can't resist Jake's swarm and agrees to being friends with the hockey God. She is slowly falling under his spell.

"There is more to Jake Birch than most people ever see. And I want to see more.”

For the first time, the hockey playing manwhore with the big stick is thinking with his head and likes more than Miranda's perfect body. Jake is elated that for once, a woman sees the man instead of just the hockey star.

"I don’t know if it’s me or him who moves---maybe both of us---but in an instant our bodies are pressed together, my soft lines molding perfectly against his hard ones.”

Jake and Miranda's explosive electricity is unstoppable! I. WAS. ON. FIRE. The heat set me ablaze, as I burned along with this sensual and seductive story. The passion fanned those flames of fire, sparking even more desire.

"I can promise I’ll make you come harder than you ever have.”

Jake's dirty and delicious words ignited me everywhere! This hockey hunk with a huge heart is UTTER PERFECTION. I LOVED JAKE A LOT!

"There’s something about Miranda that’s just good. I want to be near that goodness.”

Miranda is slowly falling under Jake's spell, as I had already fallen. Oh goodness...how can she not fall for this amazing alpha who has a sweet side buried beneath all the sexy?!?

Fire to ice. Closed heart to closed heart. Will Miranda be the one to melt Jake's heart, hardened by a tragic past? Will Jake convince Miranda to take a chance on men again, particularly a hot hockey player with a huge heart and big stick?

I SWOONED HARD, my soul soared high, and my heart was hit like a hockey puck over this sweet, smoldering, and soulful story. Brenda Rothert thrust me into the thrilling hockey world, painting a vivid picture where I was at the games feeling the ache of these characters and the adrenaline rush of hockey, and it was one enthralling experience. I WAS ALL IN AND IT WAS SO PUCKING GOOD!

Hooked is one sweet, spicy, and soulful Cinderella tale. My heart is still hijacked by Jake along with my swooning soul that he owns too. Oh was I HOOKED on Hooked! Hook. Line. Sinker.

4.5 hooked on Hooked pucks (because hockey)

This is the story of Miranda and Jake, two persons from totally different worlds.

The story is really nicely written. A poor girl who works two jobs and studies, meets famous, rich and arrogant hockey player. Although it sounds familiar, it really wasn't. The plot didn't have any surprises or twists but they weren't needed either. Ms. Rothert knows how to write a beautiful love story and to make my heart beat faster. The book is written by a dual POV and it was always clear whose POV was.

Miranda works two jobs and studies in order to achieve her dreams. I totally admired her commitment, clarity and pride. Miranda has also a beautiful and warm heart that is easily happy. Actually there was nothing not to love about her.

Jake is the typical arrogant athlete who can get every girl that lies his eyes on. I liked his focus on his sport and sincerity regarding what he needed from Miranda. Although he wouldn't be my piece of cake (I cannot stand arrogance even if it's to hide the sensitive side of someone), I totally root for him to have the girl!

Their interactions were fantastic! Their discussions, arguments, dates! It was great to see them together! They had an amazing connection that I could feel it.

The end of the book is the only negative point for me. After a certain point in the book everything worked out so fast and so easy that the story left me with an empty feeling and everything felt rushed. The first part of the book was so nicely written and the anticipation was well-built. And therefore I look forward to reading the next book of Ms. Rothert.

This story has been told before.
The poor girl, struggling to make ends meet.
The rich "player" who's just looking for fun.
And a challenge.

Even though the story wasn't new, it's still an enjoyable one, particularly under the hockey setting. While it may be too much to expect a guy to change his ways with one girl, the story still had a believable feel to it and I really liked both the H and h.

Life is good for Jake Birch. He's the Captain of his hockey team, fresh off a National Championship. All the ladies love him. And he's got a new home on the way. Which leads him to meet Miranda Carr, his maid, while staying at a posh hotel. Although the attraction between the two may be there, Miranda has no time, nor interest, to get involved with someone who could get her fired. Thus the challenge for Jake. Because what player doesn't like the chase?

The pace of this story is steady, with Miranda curious but cautious around Jake. The build of their relationship is day by day, as she becomes more in his life - servant, confidant, friend, and then more.

This story also has one hell of a villainess,Hailey Hampton, who is straight up nuts. Totally mental. At first I thought, am I seeing something Jake isn't seeing? But eventually, even he wakes up to notice that this girl is a few cards short of a full deck. Although Hailey provides some trouble for the budding couple, I liked how that drama wasn't drawn out.

This is my first book from this author, but being a hockey fan and romance reader, I am aware that this is not her first hockey book. And her love of the sport shown through. Although I didn't think an owner would ever pressure his top player like he did Jake, it certainly made for an interesting twist.

The bonus twist was Jake's backstory with his brother, which is sad but heartwarming as Jake tries to make up for the loss.

Overall, this was an entertaining read, with minimal angst, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
