L’auteur déclare n’avoir pas voulu écrire une « autobiographie » à proprement parler, mais s’être plutôt proposé de tirer certaines leçons des recherches qu’il a faites et des choses qu’il a rencontrées au cours de son existence ; cela vaut en effet beaucoup mieux, mais alors on peut se demander pourquoi il y a dans ce livre un tel étalage de portraits de lui-même à différents âges et des personnes de sa famille… Cela n’enlève d’ailleurs évidemment rien à l’intérêt du texte, qui, d
