This is one of three programmes broadcast by BBC Radio 7 in 2006. Blake’s 7 was always my favourite science fiction programme and so, if you do listen to this, then you have to accept that it is a re-imagining of the original series. Basically, “Rebel,” is a mixed up version of the first three Blake’s 7 episodes, “The Way Back,” “Space Fall” and “Cygnus Alpha.” Yet, although it contains elements of those episodes, there are also lots of differences and purists may not like this. Personally, at first I found it jarring, but I did eventually enjoy this for what it was. I do enjoy Ben Aaaronovitch’s writing and thought he did a good job in keeping the feeling of the show and yet making it something different.
The episode opens in a very similar way to the original series. Roj Blake is arrested and tried and deported to Cygnus Alpha. However, there are then several differences and also some new characters are introduced. Now, the cast are obviously not the original voices and that also makes a difference. Colin Salmon is, by far, the most assured member of the cast as Avon. Vila sounds a little like Fagin in “Oliver Twist,” but eventually I did settle into listening to this and relaxed into the new series and enjoyed it. I will certainly listen to the second audio adventure featuring this ‘new’ version of Blake’s 7 – “Traitor.”

Interesting reboot of the 70s Sci TV series. Cast are interesting with distinctive enough voices and Colin salmon makes a great Avon. The story covers three TV episodes and as a consequence feels a bit rushed.. I'd have liked them to flesh out more of blakes story before going straight into the fugitive part of the narrative. That being said it does set things up nicely for a new series and I think it stands up on its own nicely without any prior knowledge of the show.

An imaginative retelling of the starter trilogy which Aaronovitch and the new cast do a good job of. No holding a candle to the bleak horror of 'The Way Back', it chooses to miss those darkest story beats and spread the gloom in droplets through what would be ep.2-3 as well, giving it an extra oomph. Great sound production, dialogue and pacing.

===Traitor====
Blake soll auf einen Gefangenenplaneten deportiert werden. Auf dem Flug dorthin findet man im Schwerefeld eines Gasriesen ein Außerirdisches Schiff, dass bald auf diesen herabstürzen wird. Man beschließt dieses Schiff zu bergen, will dafür aber nicht treue loyale terranische Offiziere riskieren, und schickt stattdessen einige der Gefangenen, die diese Spezialgebiete beherrschen unter Führung von zwei Offizieren auf diesen Bergungseinsatz. Blake, Jenna und Avon haben jedoch nichts zu verlieren, kapern das Schiff und machen sich auf die Suche nach einer Crew.

===Liberator===
Nachdem Blake Vila und Gan als Crewmitglieder an Bord genommen hat , kommt es zu Spannungen. Vila sah sich immer als ehrlichen Dieb, nun ist er wegen Blakes Idealismus zu einem politischen Verfolgten geworden, obwohl im Blakes Ziele egal sind. Avon nutzt diese Unzufriedenheit und seine Computerkenntnisse, um sein eigenes Süppchen zu kochen und Blake in die Pfanne zu hauen, während ihnen die Terranische Flotte auf den Fersen ist.

Blake's 7 war zwischen 1978 und 1981 eine in UK sehr erfolgreiche BBC Science-Fiction Serie. Ausschnitte kann man heute auf youtube sehen (ziemlich trashig aus heutiger Sicht). Die Welt von Blake‘7 jedoch ist das genaue Gegenteil von der ach so heilen amerikanischen Star Trek Welt und damit ein Spiegel unserer heutigen Zeit. Während sich die Amis gerne als Retter der Welt, als die guten ansehen, was sich natürlich auch in Star Trek wiederspiegelt, ist die Föderation von Blake’s 7 ein Spiegel unserer heutigen Zeit. 7 Mächtige Familien und ihre Ergebenen Diener beherrschen die Erde und ihre Kolonien, indem sie eine Pseudodemokratie errichten. Die Bevölkerung ist in Kasten von Alpha bis Gamma gegliedert, ohne wirkliche Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten (auch das kommt bekannt vor). Nun jedoch betritt zum ersten Mal ein Mann die Bühne der Politik, der nicht bestechlich und korrumpierbar ist und der das ändern will: Roj Blake. Das macht den Eliten Angst, man würde Blake wohl heute als radikalen Linken bezeichnen, daher muss er verschwinden und mundtot gemacht werden. Sie versuchen ihn mit einem Scheinprozess aus dem Weg zu räumen, er jedoch kapert das außerirdische Schiff Liberator.
Diese Hörspielereihe scheint eine Nacherzählung der ursprünglichen Serie zu sein und ist mit diesen drei Folgen (hoffentlich) nicht zu Ende, der der Cliffhanger nach Episode drei ist schon heftig, ganz abgesehen, dass die Crew ja noch lange nicht komplett ist.
Blake’s 7 ist aus vielen Gründen deutlich spannender als die braven Star Trek Serien und Geschichten. Zum einen ist die Welt von Blake`s 7 ein realistisches Abbild unserer Zeit mit Korruption, mächtigen Familien und Konzernen, Politik wird gekauft, wer das Geld hat regiert und das Volk (vor allem in den Kolonien) hat kaum genug Resourcen, um zu überleben. Blake ist eine Art Robin Hood, ein Idealist, aber es wäre ja langweilig, wenn er wie Robin Hood die reichen bestehlen und die Armen beschenken würde (macht er natürlich auch). Er hat ein sehr eigenwilliges Schiff an der Backe, das seine Crew integrieren und kontrollieren möchte, währen diese das Schiff kontrollieren will und nicht umgekehrt. Man ist also permanent dabei, Machtspielchen mit dem Schiffscomputer zu spielen. Die Crew ist sich auch nicht grün. Jenna als Spacer tut immer das, was das Beste für das Schiff ist, dementsprechend können die Loyalitäten sich durchaus ändern. Avon kennt nur Avon und sucht nach jedem Vorteil für sich, was Blake OK findet, bei Avon weiß er, woran er mit ihm ist. Vila ist sauer auf Blake, weil er ihn in seinen Kreuzzug reingezogen hat, dabei ist er nur ein einfacher, ehrlicher Dieb, das belastet seine Freundschaft mit Gan, der durchaus mit Blakes Motiven Sympatisiert. Spannungen überall also, zwischen den Crewmitgliedern untereinander, zwischen Crew und Schiff und zwischen Crew und Terranischer Allianz, die natürlich das Schiff haben will, um es für ihre Zwecke einzusetzen.

This audio drama, has quite a few redeeming qualities in my eyes (or should I say ears) at least:
1. First of all it's Blake's 7 - while it does not live up to the standard set by the late 70s/early 80s science fiction show, it still has the feeling of it.
2. It's the perfect length for an hour long run and it's interesting enough for me not to switch to music which I generally find more enjoyable.
3. While the production and voice acting isn't as brilliant as I would like, it's far from monotonous, with good background effects and the general science fictioney feel.
4. They have actually managed to cram science fiction that's on the hard end in an audio-drama, which is admirable.
5. This simply is the first audio-book which I have managed to finish. It might just be because it's also the first audio-book I've tried listening to while running and the first one that hasn't been exceptionally boring, so 5 is more or less a combination of 2 and 3.
There are of course several drawbacks. Most notably - it's a modified retelling of the first two episodes of the original series. The plotline is shifted around a bit, there are new characters and events introduced and a good deal of the old ones are changed and it's adjusted to have a greater emphasis on realistic science, but it's still a retelling. Since it's a relatively new production, I would have imagined it would have been more feasible to connect the new with the old, not just renew. But it depends greatly on the personal preference, I suppose.
There's also the question of the actors chosen for the roles. Again my prejudice towards how awesome the original actors were probably comes into the play. On several occasions I just kept thinking - get that pesky guy off the mic and put Paul Darrow on.
While it retains some degree of the initial series' dark humor and cynical attitude, it's a bit more light-hearted, which sadly doesn't tell much.
Overall - a good listen, I will most probably look into getting the next ones for future runs.
