Stealer was a highly original story with amazing world building.
Dee is an unusual girl who doesn’t quite fit in. She is drawn to every day broken objects which she collects. This immediately brought to mind the collector in Labyrinth . We discover the reason that Dee’s need to collect these items when they are stolen and she is pulled into another world by a talking worm. It seems these items are magical and Dee is drawn to them by her genetics.
There is a very powerful creature in this new world that is hunting those with Dee’s abilities and it all comes down to survival.
The world building amazing and extremely imaginative but the story’s pace was just off with lulls that diminished my interest. There was just enough to make me want to know the outcome but nothing that invested me into the character’s plight.
Great potential.

So... it's over? But why?
Most of the time, fast-paced books annoy the hell out of me because they don't make sense (to me, at least). A lot of things happen at the same time, and I get confused with many 'why's and 'how's and 'who's. Fortunately, this book did not do that. Even though it had a lot of action-packed scenes, I was able to follow the events and the characters, and did not get lost in an unknown world - which is the Crescent, in this case.
I enjoyed how the idea of another world was introduced, both to the reader and the main character Dee. It didn't make me shake my head, thinking "This is not how it would go". She knew something was off, that she wasn't normal - she just assumed (and was afraid of) that she was crazy. Because, everyday objects don't glow or float or do things that latents do.
The Crescent was a lot different than Dee's world - our world - and it was interesting to read about. I only wish if there was more explaining done about the world because I was curious about the Crescent and how its people functioned. I liked how new terms were added to Dee's vocabulary, and how she learned about trysting or being a plexus or educing a latent.
And the characters made their ways into my heart, making me sad once I finished reading the book. (I want to see more of them!)
Dee, or Dark Star, was a character who annoyed me at first and then gained my support. I was annoyed because she let a 14-year-old bully her when she's 17. If a 14-year-old kid was trying to bully me, I'd find a way to shut him up. 3 years does not make a big difference when you get older, but during the teen years, it's a big age gap and Sly shouldn't be able to terrorize Dee like he had. (Not that I approve of any kind of bullying, but the idea of being bullied by someone younger than me just makes me want to call their parents and tell them that their kid is being an idiot.)
But when Dee got to the Crescent, she changed a lot. The afraid, bullied girl stayed in our world and someone new, someone who didn't tolerate to being mistreated was born. (See: "Crystal you can't go back there.") Even though all she wanted was to go back home, she acted bravely, and that made me like her. She didn't want to leave anyone behind.
Verge is someone I still don't quite understand. And how did
Crystal was cynical almost during all of the book, and to see how her thoughts change made my heart ache because if she is the one being positive right now, then they're all screwed. That's how cynical she was, and is.
I somehow ended up liking Hunter. Idk why. He and Dee have this complex relation to eachother and close to the end of the book, all I could think of was: "GET TOGETHER ALREADY." Also, his character is really interesting because he's this trained killing machine type of guy, cue him being a hunter and also named Hunter, and then he's not killing anyone? Or at least, he didn't kill anyone of importance, I think.
AND THEN THERE'S THE FACT THAT THIS BOOK ENDED. I didn't like that part a bit. I'm not used to finishing a book in just a single day, so this is a bit too much right now. I wish there was more. I really want to read about Dee, Verge, Hunter and everyone else! Like, there was parts the author didn't even talk about. How And I wish we could've seen more of River. He's important.

ARC REVIEW: Stealer by A.M. Yates

Stealer is my first ever read from A.M. Yates. She writes mostly Urban Fantasy and because of Stealer, this is probably won't be the last!
“NO” and “WOW” are the two exact words I usually utter during and after reading this book.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” *if I could just outstretch my hand, get it inside the book, and stop what’s about to happen, I will!”
“NO. THIS IS INSANE.” *to the world of Crescent, to almost everything*
“NO! YOU DIDN’T!” *to the author*
“WOW.” *because I’m truly amazed, dazed, and mesmerized*
It is told on third person’s point of view. The story of Stealer revolves around a girl named Dee and a world called Crescent. Dee, accidentally got into the world of Crescent without actually knowing how and without an assurance that she will ever get back home again – all she has was a worm who promised her to get her back to this world. A seriously strange looking guy stole her precious box from her room and now she went all through the way just to chase him and get her box back. All she wanted was her box back, but what she has found was definitely far away from what she was looking for. Now she’s lost... lost in a world where she know nothing about. And the question is, can she ever get back home again?
Dee is an average high school student who always gets bullied in and outside her school. Everybody thinks she’s weird and a total loser. Everyone – including herself - think that she’s just ordinary but she’s not. She collects broken things and she can literally see these ordinary broken things as extraordinary. Dee is a very interesting character. So brave, so everything an ideal heroine must be. Although her character sounds less mature than what she is supposed to, it actually hadn’t occurred to me that she’s already 17. She’s annoying at some times but that just make her feels more human.
The prologue was a bit confusing and entertaining at the same time. It left so many questions inside my head that makes it more interesting. The first chapters are so captivating and it had set my expectations very high. I visualize it as something Disney would make as a movie, remember Selena Gomez’s days with that movie of wizards and such? Although I got a little disappointed at some little point – in a short span of time - my high expectations got fulfilled eventually, and much fulfilled from what I had expected.
The world building of Crescent is different from all the imaginary worlds I had ever been. The world of Crescent is deeply, mysteriously, and dangerously made - just like as the ocean itself. Crescent is full of unusual and weird things. From the people inhabiting it - hunters, educers, seers, stealers, and etc. - to the structures, the clothes, the appearances, and etc - all was completely different from the world we all know.
The hard to comprehend world of Crescent is not something I could hate or dislike about this book. The unending questions and not easily comprehendible things from the world of Crescent is what makes Crescent, Crescent. I love the idea of Dee being literally lost in the unknown. I loved to see her journey of trying to survive in this world full of danger and surprises. There’s just something in this book that made me feel lost at the world of Crescent the way our heroine did and I love the experience.
I love all the characters although they aren’t the strongest and perfectly made characters I’d ever seen. I just couldn’t say anything about them. The idea of them – different persons with literally different functions or role - putting up together is such a great idea! I just love them all especially Hunter, my favorite character from this book. He’s like a puzzle you need to figure out and his mysteriousness and protectiveness makes me swooning.
If it started like something I could visualize as a Disney movie, it ended just the same and I love it, so much love it! The end is just the beginning. After reading this book, I can’t say that I already know Crescent as much as I want to. Crescent is just very deep to dig in. And I just need to know more, read more from this series. It’s un-putdownable! It’s the kind of book you will carefully read word by word just to be sure you will not miss a thing.
The ending was such a cliff-hanger! But it is not in the annoying kind of way. Everything went so satisfying but at the same time it will definitely make you hanging and wanting for more! It’s very hard to explain but I really have a feeling that what the book two will offer will be much exciting!
This book held my interest from the very beginning until the end. It’s exciting and definitely entertaining. Reading this is like losing yourself in a completely strange world.
Stealer is fast-paced, action packed, and written in a definitely highly-imaginative way. It is something young – or even young at heart - fantasy readers would really enjoy. I would recommend this book for younger readers who enjoy traveling into different worlds and want to read something with some Disney feels!
Want to get lost in a unique, dangerous, mysterious, and not easily comprehendible world? Go read this book right away.

The worldbuilding in this book was wonderful. I was completely captivated with the language and vivid imagery that Yates chose to use to describe everything in The Crescent and she somehow found a way of detailing just enough to make a mental picture without making me feel exhausted with over explanation. I felt I knew plenty to keep ahold of what was going on and where I was as far as location, but there was still a mystery that made me feel like Dee did, an outsider who was just starting to belong in this new place.
Speaking of Dee, what a great main character. She was so funny and easily likable that it wasn’t hard to get into her narrative headspace. I also liked the fact that she wasn’t your “typical” hot looking main character, being more on the tall gangly side with curly hair, that was a nice differential to the usual. It was nice to have a character that stayed true to their original personality through the entire book, she was a headstrong yet compassionate character and all those little pop culture references were great. I personally loved the “Darth Accountant” one and this one,
While I’m on the romance track I guess I can talk about the Verge/Dee/Hunter triangle that sort of happens in this book. It’s the main reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. While I liked each of these characters individually and Verge is hilarious as an individual character and I’m SOOO curious to know more about Hunter and his past/how he connects to Dee, I am not interested in Dee becoming Hunter’s love interest. That being said, I know it’s going to happen.
I’m actually rooting for Verge on this one even though at this point their relationship is more of a casual fling sort of deal. Even though he didn’t appear much in the first book, except at the male version of a damsel in distress, I really liked when he did appear and hope he shows up more in the second book.
And my only other note was that I wish we could’ve known more about Dee’s father, there was so little of him and he seemed like such an important piece to the whole puzzle. Maybe there will be more about him later…
Overall, this was an exciting and fast-paced read that kept me completely engaged and entranced from beginning to end. I’m really looking forward to the next installment so I can learn more about the world and the characters.

“Don’t feed the wolves. Never feed the wolves.”I always love when I find a new book that surprises me in a way I never expected it to. I’ll be completely honest when I say that a lot of the time I chose books based solely off of their covers so Stealer snagged my eye pretty quickly, I mean look at that beautiful cover work. But this was absolutely a case where the beauty was not just on the outside.

“I’m not about to end up like Dorothy skipping around Oz looking for the wizard. I don’t do musicals.”My other favorite character had to be Dusk, he was so adorable and yet awesome at the same time He was just so great with Crystal and Dee, trying to help them understand everything while he was dealing with so much himself. And in my opinion his abilities are the most amazing. Also, I am completely on board for the potential romance between him and Crystal if that is where the book was going, but she needs to take a serious chill pill and stop being such a control freak. She mellowed out a little near the end, but I’m curious to see how much further everyone has to go.

The main thing I love about this books is the pace, It is fast and highly engrossing. The action is entrancing, I found myself unable to put it down. Dee is the sort of heroine I love to read about, Strong willed and snarky despite the fact that she appeared weak at first. Crescent might be a little bit confusing at first but you will get into it eventually. The combination of the plexus is quite frankly a disaster but what makes this book fun is seeing them all work together towards the same goal despite their differences. A. M. Yates did a great job with this book, this series is already one of my favorites. Stealer has an ending that will leave you wanting for more. P.S Get ready to meet a sarcastic glowing worm.

A.M. Yates is a wonderful author. I've had the privilege to get acquainted with her personally, and through our back-and-forth emails, I've gotten to read most of her published works to date. (Both digital and hard copies.)
Stealer is the first of yet another trilogy (how she can write them so fast and still maintain quality is a mystery) and diverges, in slight but significant ways, from the Summoners trilogy and the Horizon cycle. Stealer begins as most thrown-into-another-world novels begin: in the middle of the action in a world completely unknown. Terminology is thrown left and right and the entirety of the prologue is beautifully confusing.
And then we meet Dee.
There isn't much I can say about the story itself, without giving too much away. But I can say this: everything is wonderfully paced. Unlike some novels where you're absolutely tempted to skip over parts to get at (what you hope are) juicy bits, Stealer leaves you wanting to read each and every single word, to be sure you don't miss anything.
The characters are beautifully fleshed out, and though I haven't quite finished reading yet, I can already see the characters evolving and changing around each other. The interactions are believable and hardly anything feels forced or shoved in. The exposure is intricately woven into the storytelling itself, most often coming from characters, in a very exasperated tone.
The imagery is something I also have to commend. I have a hard time clearly imagining the scenery in the Crescent, probably much in the same way Dee has a hard time actually processing everything she's seeing. But the diversity, even if only in the passing characters you see here and there, are absolutely enthralling.
So, to sum it up, Stealer has a wonderful universe, literally colourful characters, a good plot arc (and actually maybe several arcs) and good pacing to keep you wanting to read it. If you aren't familiar with Yates' work, I would definitely suggest you give Stealer a try. And then you can go one to read everything else she's ever written because it really is just that good.

The imagery is something I also have to commend. I have a hard time clearly imagining the scenery in the Crescent, probably much in the same way Dee has a hard time actually processing everything she's seeing. But the diversity, even if only in the passing characters you see here and there, are absolutely enthralling.
So, to sum it up, Stealer has a wonderful universe, literally colourful characters, a good plot arc (and actually maybe several arcs) and good pacing to keep you wanting to read it. If you aren't familiar with Yates' work, I would definitely suggest you give Stealer a try. And then you can go one to read everything else she's ever written because it really is just that good.

I just finished reading Stealer and I wanted to review it right away. I received a copy of Stealer in exchange for a honest review so I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading it, but within two pages I was completely hooked.
One of my favorite things about Stealer was the pace of the novel. The prologue really sets the tone by jumping straight in, and depending on the author this can either be a good thing or a bad thing. Yates is definitely one of the better authors at doing this, there was enough action and information about this new world to hook you in and keep you turning the page, but not so much that it got overwhelming. The rest of the novel followed this same pace, I couldn't put it down.
Now for characters, I absolutely loved Verge. He's everything I love in a male character. Another character I really enjoyed was Crystal. And of course the main character herself, Dee. I really enjoyed Dee's narrative, in particular I found her confusion about Crescent to be perfect. Too many authors have their characters accept situations they shouldn't way too soon, and I found Dee's reaction to Crescent to be both realistic and refreshing. Also, I don't want to spoil anything but I loved the interaction and relationship between Dee and Verge.
The world of Crescent was so detailed and well thought out. It was also somewhat horrifying, and I mean that in a good way. I definitely don't want to spoil anything but some of the details of Crescent really creeped me out, which in turn kept me glued to the page.
Overall Stealer was a fast paced adventure, jam packed with magic, interesting and creepy new worlds, great characters, and just enough romance. If you like to get all the answers right away, then this isn't the book for you. But if you're like me and don't mind some confusion and mystery then I definitely recommend that you pick this one up. This is a strong 4/5 stars from me, I'll be keeping my eye out for a sequel!

I haven't been reviewing books for very long, nor am I a professional at writing. I just write my honest opinion on books.
I am very happy to say that A.M. Yates is one of the most talented authors I've had the privilege to come across.
I have now read (and reviewed) four of her books, three being a trilogy. Not one of them did I find boring. She knows how to make a reader wanting more and keep a plot strong and intriguing.
Reading Stealer these last 3 days has been like watching one long movie that you never want to end or going on an amazing journey, meeting new people and having the time of your life.
In just one day I read, I think about 150 pages. This is the type of book where at night when I was trying to sleep, I could picture everything when I thought about the book and it was like I was watching the movie. It kept me awake and wanting to read all night. I was very tempted to do so, but unfortunately I had to sleep.

I want to jump into the book and be the character so I can live in this world.
I loved that I was able to connect with one of the characters, even if it did upset me a little. The characters are all so beautifully written.
Dee (the main character) starts out as a quiet 17 year old girl but turns into a strong, confident young woman after traveling to another world, finding out a family secret, seeing her father for the first time in her life, saving friends, making enemies, seeing people die, seeing people get hurt, getting hurt and almost killed multiple times and seeing a whole different world! All this happened during her spring break when she is left home alone and something happens that causes her to travel to another world where she finds out her father has been kept for 17 years.
If you love fantasy books as much as I do, this is DEFINITELY a book you need to read. I recommend it to everyone!

This is the first book I have read by A.M. Yates and I loved it! The whole concept of world shifting and having powers was really neat! Stealer is full of hunters, stealers, anchors, sheers, KETS, and magical energy!
Stealer is about a young girl named Dee. She lives with her mother and has no memory of her father at all. Although, her grandpa did tell her that he was an odd man. Dee is not your normal teenager. Dee collects broken things, because they glow. She keeps the things she collects in a box in her room. One day, Dee sees a man running out her window! He has her box! This man knows something Dee doesn't. How are her broken collectables worth anything? Who is this guy? Why does his symbol look familiar? Dee is confused and has no idea what is going on, or who she is. Who was her father? And why did the mark on that mans back look familiar? Dee decides to chase the man, trying to get her box back. Dee has no idea that the adventure of a life time is about to begin!
"Sure, he was cute- in an alien, theif- boy way- but that was hardly enough to earn crush status. All he'd done was cause her trouble- the serious, life- imperiling kind. Besides, she didn't know anything about him. Having sudden, electrified urges for him was beyond dumb."
A.M. Yates creates an extremely vivid picture in the readers imagination! I really enjoyed her characters and their stories. I was shocked at what Dee found in the other world and how connected she is to it! She really has no idea who she really is.
I can't wait for the second book to come out and I'm so glad the wait isn't too long. Stealer hits shelves on July 8th! Add it to your TBR list!

This book is packed with action, mystery and adventure. It is fast paced and has its unique never been read before kind of World-building. The story starts with a mystery and questions and would left you craving for more details. And the answers are all thrown in completely but not too overwhelming that would make you confused and lost.
All I could say is that every chapter is definitely a page turner, I can't hardly put it down. The only thing that makes me confused until the very end of the book is the world of Crescent. I only found myself a little bit confused and have a lot of questions about this world. But still, it didn't lessen the mystery and the out standing world building this book actually has.

Stealer is a story about Dee who was always being bullied by her classmates/schoolmates. Dee is somehow like Lucas from Pretty Little Liars. She's not doing anything wrong. She's not the bad guy in her school but her schoolmates still get feces on her hair. They always make Dee's life worse. I really pity Dee because she's had so many things going in on her life then there are still those nonsense bullies and they don't know anything about Dee.
Everything changed when a thief came to Dee's house and that thief had stolen her sort of a "memory" box or a box which contains stuff that reminds her of certain important people in her life.
From the moment the thief ran until the end of the story, I can't help but think that Stealer is somehow like Alice in Wonderland. Nid is like the Chesire cat, Dee is like Alice who becomes curiouser and curiouser throughout the story.
What I like about Stealer is that it is so fast-paced. I also like it because it's an adventurous fantasy type of story which I'm a sucker for. The story is also unique and I've never read anything like it before. It's a pretty interesting book if you're into fast-paced scifi/fantasy kind of book.
I also like how it made Dee a stronger individual when she got into the Crescent. Her being lost is something that I could assume as a symbol of her being lost for her to be able to find herself and for her to get out of her comfort zone. This part is inspiring. I think in our situation today wherein girls are often insecure about many things, it is important to have something to inspire us that we should not have insecurities because we are all unique and wonderful in our own ways.
I like how fast-paced this is, but I also hate it at the same time. It feels like it's so fast-paced that it couldn't connect that much to me anymore. It somehow kind of rushes in terms of narration and I couldn't keep up.
I was also expecting that it would be action-packed. I was looking for that "my-heart-is-beating-so-loud-and-fast" and "I-cannot-wait-to-know-what-happens-next" feels. But it was somehow disappointing that it didn't give me those feels. :(
But anyway, I still liked Stealer and I would also still want to read the next book to see what happens next.
I would still somehow suggest this to scifi/fantasy lovers and if you're looking for something new and something that is like Alice in Wonderland kind of adventure.

This was an amazing fast-paced and action-packed read! I loved the characters, the original plot and the depth of the main characters. I'm really interested in reading more about the plexus that Crystal, Hunter, Dusk and Dee are apart of; I really hope in the next book the author explores the bond between Hunter and Dee in more depth. On that note there was one character I disliked towards the end; Verge. While reading the epilogue all I could think to myself was 'what a jerk!!'. The whole book was intriguing and after reading it left me wanting more. I liked that the ending wasn't a traditional cliff hanger; not all the questions were answered but enough were that it felt like there was a sense of closure as well as a sense of excitement and anticipation for more. Overall, this was a great book that was only let down slightly by a few confusing concepts such as the Unweaver Nid and certain aspects of the world. I can't wait until the next installment comes out in August!!!

A girl about to know the secrets behind her yearnings and a strange new world where everyone was connected. This the first time I read a book by this author and liked how Dee, the main character, was portrayed. Despite the fantasy and the strange situations she was dealing with, her vocabulary, her expressions and behavior seemed that of a teenager. Liked the good pace of the story that made me understand the characters’ motivation and their behavior. Dee went through a lot of out of this world situations that changed her life and her vision of the world and still the story continues and we are going to enjoy more of this characters that in some way remembered me of a futuristic Alice in Wonderland. As a very mature grown up I always have fun with this imaginatively YA stories with interesting characters, good plots and situations that pique my curiosity. Ready for Hunter.

Here's the mark of what I see as a highly capable and talented writer. It takes a lot of skill and craft to be able to create multiple different series of books without having them end up feeling like slightly varying iterations of each other. And if there is anything I take clearly from reading AM Yates' book, Stealer, it's that she has, once again, managed to create a universe that feels completely original and unique.
Once again, Yates has come through with a cast of characters that are engaging and complex. She provides a great story and inserts characters that feel genuine and real. And to top it all off, it is all placed within this vividly colorful world.
The pace of the book is great and I thought there was a good level of tension throughout. The writing and the dialogue held my interest and left me wanting to come back for more - the hallmark of a good series.
Once again, Yates has come through with a cast of characters that are engaging and complex. She provides a great story and inserts characters that feel genuine and real. And to top it all off, it is all placed within this vividly colorful world.

I loved reading this book it was wonderful! but it had 2 things i didn't quite like. First it was pretty fast paced, and i like to take time when i read my books. second the main character need's a little more personality (to me). But other then that i insist on reading this book. FanGirls this is the type of book that will give u the feels! :)

I can't recommend this book enough. It's a perfect blend of fantasy and sci-fi really enjoyed the whole series.

I read this a part of the Stranger Worlds Box set.
It was a rough start and I almost gave up on this story. There didn’t seem to be a fixed point to grab onto - too many things happening but nothing definitively explained. I really struggled to connect with Dee and to work out what the hell was going on. Between the 1/4 to 1/2 way mark I started to figure things out and to make sense of the storyline. Then the action started to happen and I could start to become vested in the story and the characters. There were still glaring gaps in the story where the reader was expected to fill in the story - and mostly I like that in a book. Unfortunately the way it’s done this story leaves it underdeveloped and unfinished.

When I started the book, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to read another young adult story. Fortunately, Stealer is fast-paced and holds your attention to the last page. It might take a little time to warm up to the characters but by the time you finish the story, you'll want them to get together and take you on another adventure.

Most of us readers become absorbed in books and feel that we're part of the universe the authors have created. Stealer, the first book of a trilogy, was one of those books. The Crescent, the world where Stealers, and the others, come from is far from ordinary. You could get lost in it, literally and metaphorically.
The main character, Dark Star was first part of our world before she learned about her history. When her precious items got stolen by a Stealer, she just had to get them back. The Crescent made her become adventurous and stronger.

In the beginning, the story started out strong. I was really disappointed when the remainder of the book was told in Dee’s point of view. A hackneyed, cliche tactic used to expose the reader to a new world without having to explain a single thing.
Honestly, there really wasn’t anything different or extremely unique about this book that set it apart from many others exactly like it. The female lead is seen as an outcast due to her height and abnormal connections to inanimate objects. She quickly discovers that her mysterious father may not be entirely human, thus the reason behind her strange powers. Her mother and grandparents conveniently take a trip that same day for a week, leaving the main character to her own devices. Enter cocky male lead. Cocky male breaks within 24 hours of their departure, thus bringing out female’s alarmingly newfound bravery. (I mean seriously, Dee can stand up to a complete stranger without a second thought, but she must contemplate her actions when it comes to two fourteen years old's bullying her friend.) Inevitably, the two falls in love and must face “unforeseen” odds in the near future. Heartache. Heartbreak. Same old, same old.
I was completely hooked when I read the prologue. I was completely disappointed to be thrown into Dee’s drab life in the first chapter. When Verge finally appeared in chapter 3, I was even more disappointed because the entire encounter was a joke. He spoke how difficult it would be to enter the ‘Waste World’ if there ever was one. Obviously, it didn’t take him that long to find an entrance because Dee was able to spot the bruises he’d received in the prologue. Once the author has your attention, you begin to see a few plot-holes, character flaws, and just eye-roll worthy scenes.

When Verge finally appeared in chapter 3, I was even more disappointed because the entire encounter was a joke. He spoke how difficult it would be to enter the ‘Waste World’ if there ever was one. Obviously, it didn’t take him that long to find an entrance because Dee was able to spot the bruises he’d received in the prologue. Once the author has your attention, you begin to see a few plot-holes, character flaws, and just eye-roll worthy scenes.
