The Levines are finally getting a pet--a furry one that is. They are excited about adopting a kitty they name Jelly, but they don't get very far in the process when Ben starts sneezing. Oh no, he's allergic! Lola is devastated and sets out to find Jelly a good home. Luckily, Lola is rewarded with a very happy (and still furry) ending!

Her second picture book, My Name Is Gabriela: The Life of Gabriela Mistral/Me llamo Gabriela: La vida de Gabriela Mistral (Luna Rising) shares the story of the first Latina to win a Nobel Prize.
Monica's books are inspired by her Peruvian-American heritage and desire to share Latino/a stories with children. Monica Brown is a Professor of English at Northern Arizona University, specializing in U.S. Latino Literature and Multicultural Literature. She also writes and publishes scholarly work with a Latino/a focus, including Gang Nation: Delinquent Citizenship in Puerto Rican and Chicano and Chicana Literature; and numerous scholarly articles and chapters on Latino/a literature and cultural studies. She is a recipient of the prestigious Rockefeller Fellowship on Chicano Cultural Literacies from the Center for Chicano Studies at the University of California. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Flagstaff, Arizona.

We had this book randomly on our shelf so decided to give it a go and I really liked it! This is about a girl named Lola whose family gets a cat only to find out her brother is allergic. They have to give the cat up and they end up getting a dog. The cast of characters is intriguing and I am excited to read more in the series!

Lola really, really, really, really wants a cat and when her parents finally agree to get her one, Lola is overjoyed! But when it turns out that her brother is allergic, Lola is too devastated at the thought of giving up her cat and she tells her brother not to tell.

What do you do when all you have ever, ever wanted was a kitty and then you get one and your brother is allergic??? You lie. No that isn't right. Again, Ms. Brown delivers a wonderful story with our full of life Lola.

Lola and Ben are going to be getting a kitten. To prepare for this addition to the family, their mom takes them to the library to research how to take care of kittens and what they need. They learn about how to behave in the library and Lola needs to keep track of her brother in creative ways. The family bonds build while they build a cat tree together and going to pick out the kitten. But, all is not going well with the kitten when Ben starts sneezing. Lola learns a lesson about lying and that sometimes some pets cause people to have allergic reactions. Sadly, they have to find a new home for the kitten. This is book for learning about family interactions, and being a good pet owner. This is part of series of books and is good for getting readers interested in longer text books. Readers will enjoy the interactions between Lola and her brother.

School is out for the summer and Lola is excited to introduce her new cat to the family, but before that happens she needs to do some research. Finally the day arrives when they can welcome Jelly to the Levine family. Things do not go as expected when they find out that Ben, her brother, is allergic to cats and therefore they must find Jelly a new home. An unexpected person adopts Jelly and Lola has a bittersweet feeling. Finally as a surprise the Levine family will welcome a new pet, one that Ben is not allergic to.

In this amazing book Lola Levine meets Jelly and Bean by Monica Brown. The main Characters are Lola,Ben,dad,mom,and Jelly.Ben was allergic to cats so they had put Jelly on adoption.I wounder if Ben is no allergic to other animals and if they are going to going to buy other type of pet?

This book was good to read because it introduced 2 new characters to the plot as you can tell from the title. But there are problems in between.

My daughter enjoyed this book and wanted me to read it to. It was a sweet and pleasant little chapter book!

Lola's family is getting a pet kitty, but they don't get very far because then they realize that Ben (her little brother) is allergic to kitties. They give the cat to their friend Josh. Lola is very sad. They get a pet dog instead but Lola didn't know that there was a new puppy until she came out to the backyard for a picnic. Ben wanted to name the dog Bean because it went together with Jelly, the cat's name. The dog looked like a bean too.

Checked out this early chapter book because I met the illustrator at an event. It's the kind of slice-of-life story that feels so heavy-handed to me as an adult reader. I don't know how reviewers of kids' books do it. (Mixed-race family; daily suburban activities like the splash park and riding bikes and swim lessons.)

A fun breezy read for students starting to read chapter books. It also had me researching allergies as one of the characters develops an allergy but not instantly. Seems that is a common thing. The more you know!
