Rate this book

Three and a half stars would be a better rating for this book. I enjoyed the fascinating history of Machu Picchu which has always intrigued me and is on my bucket list but imagination was stretched by a lot of the storyline however it rattled along at such an incredible pace that it was hard to put down.

**** SPOILER ALERT*********

I liked the idea of the story and most of the writing was pretty good. I couldn't make friends with the the way the character of Bingham was written about at all. He was shown to be a whinging little whiner and then in the end did the heroic thing that was totally out of character. Seeing this novel was "somewhat historical", I felt Bingham got "character assassinated".
There were a few inconsistencies in the story as well which somehow left me feeling like Ride tried to pull the wool over my eyes. I would like to read the first novel in this series, so I can understand more about the background of the protagonists.
I also felt a bit cheated that this book was not marked to be one of a series.
If I start reading a book and find it's part of a series, I usually try to read the first one in the series first. I'm then better able to judge the book.

I was given this book as a Christmas gift and didn't realise it was part of a series. It didn't seem to matter, although I felt that Helena's role could have been a bit better - Wilson is relying on Helena, yet her story feels too peripheral to me. Wilson is an Overseer (I think his job is to make sure that history goes the right way), his actual job is not made clear in this book but may have been explained in earlier ones. The explanation of the Incan written word being wiped away deliberately is good, and the female warriors are good.

The story started well enough and kept me going for a while, but I found myself drifting away from the characters and the plot. Simply was not interested in the story and how it might unfold. Got to chapter 41 and stopped reading....
Overall found the main characters flat and uninteresting. The Inca Curse and the black magic / voice etc did nothing for my imagination

Wilson Dowling is the Overseer, transported from the future who must carry out vital missions found encoded in The Dead Sea Scrolls. His 3rd mission takes him to 1908 where he must assist Hiram Bingham to discover the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu. Mission accomplished but the artefact needed to get Wilson back to his own time has been stolen - a 500 year old gold Cube of the Sun God. Now he must find this Cube, steal it back all with the help of the Virgins of the Suns, Amazon women entrusted with the safety of the Cube. A great adventure, in a couple of parts there was a little bit too much torture for me, but if you skip over those sections a fabulous tale.

First reading of one of Christopher ride's books and I was impressed. Excellent story line with some vivid writing and good imagination. Set between Houston and Machu Picchu in Peru it is a time travel adventure with wilson Dowling a time lord known as The Overseer ensuring world safety by attempting to keep history on track. An easy and fast paced read will appeal to those with a sci-fi (time travel especially) and history interest.

Oh wow......this was just a captivating story that had me fascinated right from the start......what a wonderful story where you have woven some true facts on the Incans and taken the reader on a fabulous journey. This really was a page turner where I just couldn't wait to see what happened next.....my definition of a good read.

After reading this book and some others I now have to add a visit to Machu Picchu onto my bucket list, along with learning more about the Incan history.

For a time-traveller/ historical novel this was done pretty well. Delighted to discover that Chris Ride is a Canberran as well! I had not read the prequel but did not have any difficulty picking up the story where it left off. Not a gripping page-turner but one you certainly wanted to keep reading.
