Margaret Peterson Haddix grew up on a farm near Washington Court House, Ohio. She graduated from Miami University (of Ohio) with degrees in English/journalism, English/creative writing and history. It's been a long time since I read a book in this series, and since it starts immediately following the events in Book #3, I would have appreciated a brief reminder of what had just happened. In any case, Trey has gone to find help following travesty at the Grants, and is almost grabbed along with Mr. Talbot's house as the Population Police arrest him. Trey is no hero, but eventually partners with Mark Garner in order to find his friends, who have been imprisoned. Yet, Trey manages to find the courage to infiltrate the Population Police to save Mark from being executed and then mount a daring rescue of his comrades. I liked this book better than the previous ones: 3.5 stars.

Among the Brave was an inspirational, thrilling, and action packed novel filled with suspense and drama all at the same time. Not only is the main character a young boy, Trey, but a illegal third child that should not have been born. After living his whole life in hiding, being exposed to the real world mentally impacted Trey. With the government being overthrown, the new military based, monarch takes over everything needed to live and forces control over everyone, even the free people. With crazy government officials out to get every illegal third children, soldiers out on every corner of the streets, and everyone either taken hostage or even killed, Trey deals with the situation smoothly with his high intelligence and fast critical thinking. Can Trey save his other third child friends or will he chicken out at the last minute when they really need him the most? Read the book to find out. :]

Trey was thinking about Luke, and how brave he was. He wished he could be that brave. But, if you thought about it, he never really got a chance. Until now. Trey is left stranded in front of Mr. Talbot's house as the Population Police rade it. He manages to survive just barly, hidding behind a flower pot until Luke comes for him. But he never does. Now Trey knows that something's up. So, he teams up with a boy named Mark Garner in order to find his friends and save them from the Popualtion Police - Even if it means joining the Population Police to do so. But will Trey be brave enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with the very people who want to take his life?

This is my favorite Shadow Children book, and I think my third all time favorite =)

I have read 6 out of the 7 books in the Shadow Children series, and except for the first book, this was my favorite so far! In this book Trey, one of the boys Lee mentored at the school, is the protagonist and "hero",something he never would have thought himself capable of! As a 3rd child, Trey grew up hiding in the city with his 2 friends until they got caught by the population police and "held" in prison, until they could be brought to Lee's school by Jen's father. Trey looks up to Lee and admires his courage. The story continues drastically when the population police seize power,and the whole country is forced to change. Jen's dad is kidnapped right in front of Trey's eyes,and Lee and his other 2 friends disappear,possibly having been kidnapped also, leaving Trey alone to fend for himself. He makes his way from Jen's house over to Lee's family farm, and befriends Mark, one of Lee's older brothers. Together they hatch a plan to drive into the city and "rescue" Lee and the others. Everything goes pretty smoothly until they arrive at the new population police headquarters and Mark gets caught. Trey has to decide whether to run away and hide (his first instinct) or stay and bravely figure out a way inside, a way to secretly locate the others, and a plan of escape. I can't give away any more info without ruining the plot, but trust me, this book is action-packed and full of intense moments throughout!I enjoyed getting to know Trey's character, and his personality and back story was as well-developed or better than Lee's, in my opinion. I highly recommend this series and this book in particular for teens who like adventure and suspense, or for those who are not really into reading. This is a high interest yet easy to read book series; a win-win!

I loved this so much oh my goodness OH MY GOODNESS Ahhhhhhhhhhhh *sobs and screams at everyone because TREY AH* I think I'm becoming a little biased towards these books because I love them so much.....I don't care though lol they are totally worth 5 stars and you can't convince me otherwise


"His mind slipped back to a multiple choice test question he'd been asking himself for more than a year: Whom do you hate? A) Him; B) Her; C) Yourself? It never worked to add extra choice: D) All of the above; E) A and B; F) A and C; or G) B and C? Because then the question just became, Whom do you hate the most?
When I first read this, I didn't understand who he meant, but as the book went on, I kept flipping back to this page and I would just....stop....like I kept thinking "Omg he means his mom because she abandoned him, and now all of his friends have (unwittingly) abandoned him too" and "Omg his dad died and he's not over his death and AHTILWKDS" yes that is quite accurate representations of my thoughts (not lol) anyway, I love Trey. Did I mention I love Trey?? He's such a cinnamon roll 😭

I love how much Trey knows, like he is extremely well read for his age (of course due to ah, circumstances) but ya, he's great, he's smart, he's slightly nerdy, awkward, and does foolish things, and thinks he is a coward but then does these amazingly brave things and oh my goodness his character development!!!! I knew he was going to have a great character arc and Haddix definitely came through.

I loved getting to know more about Mark. I'm kinda sad we haven't see much more of Matthew, but I feel like he is kind of in Susan Pevensey's position with being the older sibling if that makes sense. If he is in book 6 though, I won't be too surprised.

"Is that how all heroic epics work? Trey wondered. They only tell about the bravery and leave out the fear?"
No, it's not that the fear is left out. I think people who are seen as brave use their fear as fuel. They take action despite it, not letting the fear hold them back, especially when they know other's are counting on them. I don't know if that makes any sense but basically, to me, bravery and fear go hand in hand.

A Review of Among The Barons by Margaret Peterson Haddix
If you lived in a country where you can only have two children, if you were a third child you would be in hiding. A law made fourteen years ago changed millions. This law is that you can't have more than three kids, and if the population police catch or find you. You will be punished in death, and if you had to decide, what would you do? Hide for the rest of your life or go out and try to live life but not get caught? Luke, a third child, was born in the country on a farm. He is thirteen years old and goes to Hendricks school. This novel, Among The Barons by Margaret Peterson Haddix, is really good, because you do not know whats going to happen next and it is so unexpected.
Luke and his friends are really nice too each other. They are supportive to each other. They are thirteen years old and would've been a regular group of friends but this law changed it. When one friend is sad, they are sad with the friend, and same thing goes for every emotion, like when they were playing outside and Trey got hurt and they all gave up their free time to see if Trey was alright. They are like brothers ,and no one is ever left out. If there was no law they would be smarter and go to real schools. They should not have to live their lives like this because it is a waste of a good life. Thirteen and sixteen year old teenagers would like this book because they really act like regular kids and, it is like they are not even characters in the book. They all like to nave fun and play outside. It's like they just live life until they have no choice to go into hiding.
This book has a lot of suspense and when you hear it. You will be on the edge of your seats. Margaret Peterson Haddix's has books that are thrillers. On the front cover of the book it might say "a story filled with thrills" and it sure is true. Her writing makes you get that pit of fear in you're stomach when you're scared or nervous for someone. Like a part of the book was crazy I thought they were going to get caught and get killed but that did not happen. Smits just got to the school like a hour ago and Luke, Mr. Hendrick, and Smits were all in a room, and Luke spotted a big man with a sledgehammer running towards the school. Mr. Hendricks is a man who lost his legs bit he is really wise ,and teaches in the school. Luke was scared straight, and the man was Oscar, he was Smit's body guard. I do not know why he needs a body guard while you're in a secret school that barely anyone knows about. Oh wait. I know why, Oscar is not just there to protect him, he is there to watch Smits so he does not cause any trouble. Oscar does not do a good job. Smits started a fire and caused a lot of damage to the school! Where are all the students going to go now? Well Luke goes to the Grant's mansion and lives there. Smits becomes better than before.
Luke really does not like in the Grant's Mansion. I do not know why he doesn't like it but he is living in a house where he doesn't know anyone. I would be really awkward but it's a life or death situation so Luke just had too go along with it. The are almost done repairing the school after about two months. I am surprised because that could've went so much worse, but that is really how Margaret Haddix writes her books. She has a lot of suspense and then just makes it all good in the end. It happened when Oscar was running towards the room that they were in. A man running with a sledgehammer that has bad written all over it!

If you do not have time too read Margaret's awesome series The Shadow Children, here is what ended up happening to Luke's family and Smits family. Well Luke and Smit were all happy because Luke let Smits live with Luke's parents for a while, and Smits was good because he actually had a dad that actually has time for him, so Smits and Luke's parents were happy. On the other hand we have Luke's parents. Mr. And Mrs. Grant are filthy rich, spoiled and do not have a lot of time for Luke. Mr. Grant is too busy working and Mrs. Grant is shopping or working.
Margaret Peterson Haddix the author of Among The Barons. Margaret Peterson Haddix was born on April 9th,1964 in Washington Court House, Ohio. She wrote over thirty books and has one series called The Shadow Children, the series that I am reading now. Margaret Haddix is fifty one and is still writing. I recommend to you read her books, because you will enjoy reading them with the great suspense. She is a unique type of author, but in a good way.

Personal Response

I really like this book. This book has a great story line and one of the main reasons has to be the constant suspense. The author does a great job of adding a sense of urgency and intensity into the character's actions. I also like how I am able to witness the growth the main character goes through throughout the book.

Plot

The rebellion against the Population Police has hit a snag. The leader of the rebellion and some of its important members have been arrested by the Population Police. It is now up to Trey to try and rescue his friends before it is too late. Trey feels very lost and confused after witnessing the arrest of Mr. Talbot. Trey decides that he must find his friend Lee to make a plan, but is told by Lee's brothers that he is also missing. Trey and Mark, Lee's brothers, decide that they must try to find Lee. They go to the Grant Mansion, only to discover it is the new Population Police Headquarters. When Mark is arrested while he is snooping around the building, Trey realize that the only way he could save the others is with Mark by his side. Trey decides to go undercover and uses the vent system to sneak into the basement of the Grant Mansion. After Mark is rescued, the boys find a population police officer who is also part of the resistance. The man wants to help them and he gives them papers to transfer prisoners. Mark and Trey arrive at the prison and Trey goes undercover once more. Trey uses his disguise and the fake papers to receive the prisoners.Trey and Mark narrowly escape the guards at the prison and are able to drive away with the prisoners. Once they find a safe and secluded area, Trey and Mark discover the prisoners they've rescued are Mr. Talbot and their friends. The book ends with the group of kids and Mr. Talbot going into hiding to plan their next move.

Characterization

Trey grows a lot as a person throughout the book. In the beginning of the book Trey is very shy and reserved, he has very low self confidence, and he refuses to take risks. All this changes after Trey witnesses the arrest of his friends. He becomes more brave and he takes more risks as the book goes on. In the end he realizes that he was brave all along and he just needed to be more confident in his own abilities.

Setting/Time

The book takes place in a very oppressive country. The law against third children creates a feeling of suspense and frustration throughout the reading of the book. The story becomes very intense when Trey is in the prison trying to rescue his friends, as well as when Trey is in Population Police Headquarters. Based on the technology in the book, the time period seems relative to ours . The impact of having a similar time period is that the laws in the book could possible be in some third world countries where population affects their success.

Thematic Connection

I think that the theme in this book is becoming something you never thought you could be. Trey thinks he is a very shy and nervous person and, because of this, he establishes himself as the person who isn't able to help anyone. However, Trey discovers he can be brave when his friends need help. He learns to believe in himself and reaches the potential he never thought he had.

Rating/Recommendation

This book is excellent and is also part of a great series. In my opinion, this book is a great addition to the series and is very deserving of a five star rating. The plot in this book has a lot of action and the characters are very well written. This book is a great read for anybody in upper middle school and beyond. The book is also great for both genders because it has main characters everyone can find relatable. Additionally, this book is great for anyone who loves adventure and suspense.

Again, I'm going to have to give a book in this series a 3.5 because I can't bring myself to give it 4 stars. Bummer!! This is book 5 in the series, and it is Trey’s story after he is dropped at Mr. Talbot’s house in the end of Barons. He thinks he’s there to get help from Mr. Talbot while his friends wait in the car, but when Population Police tear out of the garage with a handcuffed Talbot, and Nina and the others speed away from the house, he’s left alone, confused, and scared. He learns that the president has been overthrown and replaced with the head of the Population Police, who is ruthless and determined to rid the country of ‘thirds’. Riots, executions, betrayals, and an authority overhaul leave pretty much everyone with no idea who they can trust or how they will survive. With the help of Luke’s brother Mark, Trey sets off to find his friends and figure out what he’s going to do now that he’s on the run. Along the way, the timid and naïve Trey learns strengths that he never knew he had, and becomes a key player in the future of the movement to free the shadow children.

I really like the way this series is set up to have storylines from several different characters that cover the story as a whole, because it makes me enjoy characters that, to be honest, I didn’t think much of before. Trey was one of them, but after reading Brave and seeing how much he grows, I like him a lot more than I did in the previous books. He goes from this meek little boy to being a strong, clever asset to the movement. I have to admit, after reading 5 books of this series I’m itching for an ending…I’m kind of feeling like enough is enough, but I do really love all of the stories behind each character. I’m just ready for the Population Police to get what they deserve!! =)

After reviewing this book on my blog I decided to re-read it because it's been a while. It was as good as I remembered. Trey is a likable hero because he does courageous things despite his own fear. If you're willing to look for them, the book also has some good themes about doing the right thing despite potentially bad consequences, the sanctity of human life, courage, friendship, etc. This book is my favorite in the series and can be read alone, but I'd recommend reading the stories in order.

Hiding and running away from the law are challenges Luke Garner has to face because of his secret. In “Among The Hidden” by Margaret Peterson Luke Garner struggles by hiding a secret, he is a shadow child, a shadow child is another term for the third child which wasn’t allowed in Luke’s town.Luke is tired of hiding, he wants to be a kid, he wants to play outside and football with other kids like his brothers Matthew and Mark, Luke wants to go to school and have friends. His mom just wants him to stay safe inside the attic where no one can see him nor get in trouble.Luke sees a girl, a girl about his age in a house where two children already live.Luke risks everything to investigate who this girl is and why she was in that house.Sometimes you need to take risks in life no matter what the consequences are.

Among The Hidden fits in the science fiction genre because in the book it talks about the third child not being allowed because the government doesn't want to overpopulate.In the book the text says “There was a law against Luke. Not him personally— everyone like him, kids who were born after their parents had already had two babies. Actually, Luke didn't know if there was anyone else like him. He wasn't supposed to exist. Maybe he was the only one. They did things to women after they had their second baby, so they wouldn't have any more. And if there was a mistake, and a woman got pregnant anyway, she was supposed to get rid of it.”

I enjoyed this book because of the description of every event, the author made me feel like i was with Luke and while reading I could imagine everything that was happening.I think people who enjoy fantasy would like this book because it’s kind of dramatic and you can feel the emotions.Children and adults of all ages would enjoy reading Among The Hidden because it’s appropriate and it’s something that could happen one day if the united states over populate.So if you are looking for a great book to read, pick up Among the Hidden and start reading today.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This was one of the best books in the Shadow Children series, I think at least. I really liked how each book went with a different character. The last book in the series I read was about Luke, but this one was about Trey.

Plot
Trey and his friends, Nina, Joel, and Jon, are all on their way to Mr. Talbot’s house. When they arrived there they debated on who was going to get out of the car and go knock on his door. There mission was to tell him about the Grants who had died less than a few hours ago. Trey finally got enough courage to go and knock on Mr. Talbot’s door. Mr. Talbot answers the door but is acting weird. Within a minute trey heard tires squealing and a all black car came racing from the house with Mr. Talbot handcuffed in the back. Trey didn’t know what to do. He’s kinda a coward he’s never had to do anything real brave. When he went to go walk to the car again it drove off with his friends and A dozen or more black cars pulled up. The whole house and yard was searched, but they never found Trey. A young boy came up on the porch where Trey was heading and said, “Liber.” Later on Trey found out where his friends were and made a plan to rescue them from prison. He did rescue them and at the end of the book he was planning to rejoin the population police and try to form a rebellion against them.

Characterization
Trey at the beginning of the book was really just a coward, but at the end of the book he had more courage than any of his friends. He also was mad at his dead father, but by the end he was thanking him for all the stuff he taught him.

Lee or Luke was the one always rescuing people from the trouble but that changed when he was arrested and was sent to prison. He was rescued by Trey who was normally a coward.

Mr. Talbot was the leader of the Liber plan which wanted to set third children free. He was arrested and beaten very badly in prison, almost to the point of death. He also was rescued by Trey.

Setting
It all takes place in the future but technology has gone down a little bit. It started out at Mr. Talbot’s house, and Lee’s house which was right next door. Then it went to the Grant’s estate, that the population police had taken over and made into its new headquarters. It moved to on the road to Nezeere which was a prison for people who disobeyed the population police. And at the end of the book it ended up at the hendrick school. Without all these places, the book wouldn’t be a book.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book to ages twelve and up and any gender. I think anyone younger than twelve wouldn’t understand the book. It’s not a book that would be focused on any gender, so I believe any gender could read this book. It's a very exciting book with some funny parts and some sad.

Through a series of well-timed, unfortunate events, Trey finds himself testing his illusive bravery. Being separated from Luke, he finds himself hiding out at the home of Mr. Talbot. The home has been trashed and Trey is afraid. After a few days pass, he spies Smits and Luke’s brother, Mark near the house. Could it be that Luke’s family is living near him?

Conjuring up more gumption, he decides to confront Mark. While deciding if Luke and Nina are in danger, they decide to rescue them, unbeknownst to Luke and Mark’s parents. Along the way, dangers are everywhere, food is scarce, and the Population Police have taken over the Grant’s home as their headquarters. Mark is captured as an enemy and Trey, once again, has to muster up his courage and rescue him. He finds a few allies along the way, and without them, he would have no chance to find Luke, Nina, John, or Joel.

Surprisingly, Trey rescues some of his friends and they find a way to temporary safety amongst an old friend. But, the fight isn’t over...so are they going back into the fray, or are they going to wait it out? Among the Brave is Trey’s story and what a story of bravery it is! Full of danger and suspense, it leads us right into the next book in the series, Among the Enemy.

I really liked this book, it’s probably one of my favorites in the series. Although most of the books are from Luke’s point of view, this book is from his friend trey’s. Trey had never been outside in his life until he turned 12, and he is still afraid of the outdoors. He is a 3rd child, and any time he is in an open space he tries to find somewhere to hide. But throughout the book he learns how to be brave even when he is scared. He takes up a fake identity to be part of the population police to save mark, Luke’s brother. I really liked reading this book from his point of view, I thought it was really interesting. Especially because he had to learn how to be brave when he was still traumatized from being locked away for 12 years.

This book proves that once again often the best way to read a book is to have low expectations going in. The book is almost always better than I expect when I do that and this was no exception.

I expected a book from the POV of a very peripheral character up until now would be terrible and yet it turns out that it was my favourite in the series so far. Overall, this series leaves the workings of the government super vague (I assume middle grade kids don’t want these details like I do) but in this book, not only is there a lot more action than before, but we caught a brief glimpse into more of how this world is run.

Trey starts our super meek and perpetually freaked out about just LOOKING outside and practically faints at being outside but over time he taps into his bravery (it’s Among the Brave after all) and becomes an interesting main character.

Among the Brave by Margaret Peterson Haddix was the fifth installment of the Shadow Children Series, and follows Trey, Luke's friend from Hendricks School, rather than Luke. We see Trey coming to terms with how to be brave and save the people he has come to care about the most. Overall, this book really started to show the plummeting and downfall of society, but I just did not feel as captivated by this book as I have by others in the series. Maybe because Trey is not as captivating as a protagonist as Luke or Nina? I'm not sure, but I hope for a turnaround in the next installation, as the setup for it at the end of this novel was very promising.

Book 5 of The Shadow Children follows Trey, a fellow Hendrick’s school attendee, one of Luke’s friends, and very quiet and scared third child. When crazy and unexpected things happen Trey, against all of his preconceived notions about himself and fears, steps in to help his friends. He doubts himself the whole way, he’s even very far from brave at times...most times, but he cares too much to give up, even if he needs a push and a shove in the right direction once in a while. I’m off to read the 6th book in the series.

After the book where Nina was the POV, I was a bit hesitant about this one, since Nina's was unfortunately forgettable and I wasn't sure about another book without Luke at the forefront. But ooh, man, Brave and Barons are now tied for the hardest hitting of the Shadow children books so far, Trey is such a solid character.

(I think Nina was probably hurt by the plot her book was set in, I don't think she's inherently a weak character, but it was the most forgettable book overall.)

Ok this is what Nina’s book thinks it is and aspires to be. This one was the best one so far. The action was thought out and the growth of Trey was GREAT. Also the “make our country great again” speech at the beginning was absolutely chilling for the times we’re living in right now. Wild.

Ah this is my favorite one so far. I love Trey so much and also mark and I just want to give them all hugs and tell them how brave they are. Just little babies

This is the redeemer of the series. #3 and #4 were a bit to get through, but I loved this one. I've read it a few times for the nostalgia of the series.
