What's a little competition between friends - right? Katie is thrilled when Sabrina decides to enter a sports competition with her. But Katie and Sabrina don't see eye-to-eye. While Katie is ready to do some serious training, Sabrina can't seem to focus on anything except Max McAllister, the cutest guy on the boy's team.
Katie and Sabrina’s Big Competition Katie notices Sabs is limping and can barely get her books out her locker. She says she tried two exercise tapes (beginner and advanced) figuring she was somewhere in the middle. Not only that she took a bath and used some sports cream Luke told her to use. Katie says that was *not* the thing to do because it probably opened up her pores more. Sabs invites them all over after school to do the tape with her (because she can’t seem to do anything ON HER OWN). All of em kind of turn her down. Randy would rather skateboard. Katie says she’s going to the mall with her brother to shop for new tennis shoes, Sabs says she needs new exercise pants. Then they all agree to go. Randy says she needs new wheels. Al says she needs to get Barrett something and Charlie. They also decide to catch a movie.
After school, Micheal invites his guy friends (Sam, Nick, Jason, and Arizona). The mall is packed. The sports store Mc Lucklins is extremely packed. So they head there to find out what’s up. A new sports complex has opened in Acorn Falls They’re giving away free passes and T-shirts. There’s a DJ there from KZAR and a promotor that’s signing up kids for a triathlon that’ll be in three weeks. The name of it is the Ironkids and it’ll be for kids ages seven to fourteen. There will be two groups. Juniors who will be seven to ten and seniors you’ll be eleven to fourteen. There will be a boy winner and a girl winner in each group. The prize is a one-year membership to the sports complex. There’s a 200-meter swim, a 6-mile bike ride, and a 1.2-mile run. Katie wants to sign up. Sabs says she’ll do it too. Katie’s a little surprised by this and points out what a challenge it’ll be but Sabs says she wants to try. She thinks it’ll be fun. Katie doesn’t think she realizes how serious it’ll be but Sabs suggest they train together. Katie thinks it might be fun to train together but she has her doubts.
At the Pizza Parlor, Sam expresses his doubt in his twin’s decision. Katie gets mad because even though she feels the same she doesn’t like how Sabs is being treated. Katie challenges the guys to sign up so they can “show them how it’s done.”Randy points out it was the same when they didn’t think Katie could make the hockey team and she proved them wrong. They kind of back down. Micheal. Jason, Nick, and Arizona says they pass. Sabs challenges her brother Sam says he doesn’t have to prove anything and he didn’t say he could do all that. He just said he didn’t think Sabs could do it. Katie says they’re wrong and they’ll be the first to cross the finish line.
The next night they all have a sleepover. They all tell Katie they’re proud of how she put the guys in their place. Katie notices Sabs doesn’t sound so sure. But she tells her just because Sam doesn’t believe in her doesn’t mean she can’t do it. She says she hopes so. Sam will never let her live it down otherwise. Katie says they just need a strategy. Just like when she ran for president. Katie starts to develop a training schedule for them. Sabs already thinks it's a lot. She says they don’t have to do all three every day and they should start doing some weight training. Sabs starts ticking off the days she can’t work out. (It’s atleast 3). They also have to go to the complex. Sabs suggest they put it off. It’s a slumber party after all. What does Sabs want to do instead? Take a romance quiz. (rolls eyes).
On Monday, it’s sleeting, This messes up Katie’s plan for her and Sabs to go bike riding. So since Sabs can’t work out Tuesday, they’ll have to do it instead Wednesday. So That means they’ll have to do some weight lifting, Michel suggests Katie and Sabs go to the complex and use the indoor track and Katie thinks it’s a good idea... Sabs seems excited but noticeably not about the workout. More so about what clothes she’ll be wearing to work out in.
Before they go Sabs irritates Kaie a little because first, she wants to find a shirt to match the strip in her biking shorts. Then she wants to find matching yellow socks. Then she has to put her hair up. Then she can’t find her shoes. When they get there they both love that the complex is glass and has every kind of sports equipment from spas to tracks to swimming pools and jacuzzis. They start to stretch to warm up and Sabs becomes distracted by a cute eighth-grader named Max. Max is doing all these ridiculous stretches. Sabs asks Katie if they should be doing the same but Katie says no. She doesn’t think of Max. He’s one of those guys that’s cute but cocky. So, Katie and Sabs start their laps. Katie wants to start off slowly to warm their muscles up but she sees that Max has already started to run. She can’t believe he’d start off at such a fast pace. Sabs wants to start running too, but Katie tells her it’s better they work their way up to it. Max catches up with them and starts to flirt with Sabrina. He asks Katie “aren’t you that girl on the hockey team”. Which puts her off to him even more. He offers to help Sabrina train (well he says them) and before Katie can say anything Sabrina accepts and runs off with im (already out of breath). Katie jogs with Sabs and tells her to concentrate on the number 13. She then encourages her to keep walking so her muscles won’t cramp out. Sabs finishes but she’s upset that she finished not only last but after everyone had showered. Katie says it doesn’t matter she finished.
On Wednesday, Al and Randy join Sabs and Katie for a workout. Katie says since they don’t have much time they have to work extra hard. Monday's workout didn’t go so well. Katie does three miles but Sabs only did one (and a half). Katie is pleased to hear Sabs did some stair climbing on her own at her house. Sabs admits she’s a little nervous but they tell her she’ll be fine. Randy does the treadmill. Al does the training bike. Katie shows Sabs how to do bench presses. Sabs is tired after just 10 but Katie presses her to do 10 more. Sabs only does seven. She says Max said it’s not necessary to lift weights to run. They only make you slower. Katie points out how they need upper body strength for the swimming portion of the competition and that Max doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Sabs suggest they practice with Max next time and Katie gets mad that she wants to change the schedule. She doesn’t want Max’s help, The guys come in and Katie gets upset because of yet another distraction. They offer to leave when they see this but she tells them to stay and she and the others can swim. But Sabs says she’ll change and Katie knows how long this will take so they won’t get anything done on her schedule.
Two weeks pass. The competition is three days away. Sabs has improved in running and swimming but Katie doesn’t think it’s enough. She feels like she’s not doing her best because Sabs is a distraction. They decide to go through the whole thing at the complex. Sabs has a whole bag full of junk to change into different things between events. At the complex, they see Max whose running. Sabs wants to run, but Katie says they have to do everything in order, swimming biking, then running. So, Sabs suggest they both do it their way and see if it makes a difference. Katie gets mad and says fine. Not that Sabs process. Katie gives up on helping Sabs and starts her own workout. Katie goes through the routine and when it’s over she’s exhausted. Sabs is thereafter and says she did great (but Max is scowling). Katie offers to time Sabs but she says Max said going through the whole thing wasn’t necessary. They already ran three laps. Then she says Randy and Al will be at Fitzes and Katie is too tired to argue with her. But she vows the next time they work out Max won’t be a distraction.
Katie makes a plan to work out after school one day. They’ll walk three miles and bike for ten. Sabs thinks it’s a lot but doesn’t argue. Sabrina tries to do the twelve laps but can’t. Katire tries to press her to keep going, but Sabrina gets frustrated and tells her she’s the one who wants to win. Basically, she tells Katie she can do no wrong and she can’t compete with her so stop trying to force her to and then she leaves. Katie and Sabs apologize and come to an understanding that they both entered the competition for different reasons. Sabs just did it because she thought it would be fun. Katie did it to win.
At the competition, Sabs freaks out that she gets the number 24 and she wants the number thirteen. Katie offers to trade with her even though she likes her number (It was her Dad’s hockey number). Al and Randy say they’ll get Sabs her number. Before the race, Michel gives Katie his lucky rabbit’s foot. It doesn’t look like Randy and Al will come through with the number. The competition starts. Al and Randy show up in the nick of time with the number. They were picked to be lap counters. Al says she’s Katie’s lap runner. Katie crosses the finish line at the last event and Al tells her she won. She came in first place of all the girls. Sabs still hadn’t crossed the line and everyone is leaving. Katie rushes out to help Sabs (who has a half mile to go). Sabs is out of breath but determined to finish. They see Max whose in a pissy mood because he came in second. Sabs says she guesses his techniques weren’t so great after all. Al says both Katie and Sabs are winners. Sam tells them they *both* ran a good race.
My Thoughts I didn’t think I was going to like this one very much. When I saw the title my mind idn’t immediately go to sports. Unconsciously I was probably thinking there were enough sports-centered things in this series. But to be about girls this is a heavy sports-centered series. But then I thought about the time around when this series came to mind and I realized that if you think back there was an emphasis on staying in shape. There were a whole bunch of physical activity equipment called “Get In Shape Girl”. But the sport didn’t bother me as much in this one. What this one reminded me of was ironically enough a situation I saw on an old reality tv show about a comedian and five adopted kids. So one of his kids wanted to be a boxer. Anyone could see that his son didn’t want to box to be in competitions and what not. He was just doing it for enjoyment. Yet his dad keep asking him did he want to spar and he’d always say “I’m just not interested.” The father even entered the thought (to the viewers) that maybe one day his son would go on to be a big time boxer. So maybe to “encourage* (coughs push) him into it he flew in his favorite boxer. Everyone could see the boxer in the back with his back turned with a hood over his head. The father asked the son one more time did he want to spar. Again he said no. The father went SLAP off. He started ranting and getting all loud. Like “Oh your not gonna do it. I’m your father and your boss.” Like *he* was being disrespected. I just thought you are WRONG for tha! You can’t *push* people into having more of an interest in something because YOU want them to havethe same interest you have in the thing. I have even seen this in my own life when a family member tried to push me into going with her and some more of my family to see a musical when I told her I wasn’t interest inmusicals. To this day that same family member just will not let up on that. But I liked that Katie realized her mistake and apologized. I liked that at the end she pushed Sabrina the *right* way and wouldn’t let her give up even if she had to run with her to get her to cross the line. That’s the kind of loyality in a friend we all need to see. Sometimes I don’t always like that Sabs is so flighty tho. It use to didn’t bother me but now it’s kinda starting to.
