'The Grid provides you with a simple way to look at the complex system which is your business. With the possible exception of Warren Buffett, everyone needs to read this book.' RORY SUTHERLAND, VICE CHAIRMAN, OGILVY GROUP
'The Grid provides a systematic framework for looking at virtually all the critical aspects of your business, and maybe more valuable, at how each affects the others. It'll be a rare reader who doesn't come away with fresh, useful insights into his or her enterprise.' WALTER KEICHEL III, author of The Lords of Strategy
'Matt Watkinson distils strategic know-how into nine ingenious perspectives and, with the use of clever examples, shows us how to apply this technique of thinking to any business problem or market opportunity. An extraordinarily powerful book.' DR JULES GODDARD, author of Uncommon Sense, Common Nonsense
'The Grid presents a unique, joined up approach to decision-making, revealing both the holistic nature of business and all the key elements a business must consider. I can safely say that if you only read one business book in your life it should be The Grid.' PHILIP ROWLEY, Chief Finance Officer, Sony Pictures Entertainment
I'm reading this book because Rory Sutherland (from Ogilvy in the UK) has blurbed it, and I respect Rory's recommendations on books. It was good because it recognizes businesses are interdependent, like a human body. His grid lays out 9 areas. If you affect one, you affect others, and you have to take this into account when making decisions. The author claims not much is written on this, and he's probably right, though Peter Drucker did talk about it, so does Gary Hamel, Stephen Covey, among others. There's some excellent points in the book, though none of the topics are covered in depth (pricing, for example), but he does include a useful suggested reading list for those who want to dive deeper into a particular area. A worthwhile read.
This is one gem of a business book. It provides the reader with a mental scaffolding to relate together all the complexities of running an enterprise, big or small, into clear decision points for tradeoffs through the enunciation of a holistic strategy. This i find to be its greatest value, to be able to explain and analyze a strategy, make comparisons, and move towards a decision. Best of all, it provides a trove of recommended books and articles to read and reference. For all entrepreneurs, this is a must read.
The overall hypothesis of the book is spectacular - synthesis of different parts and elements of the organisation together. While some of the aspects are well known (and not fleshed out well - revenue models/ costs), the others are excellent (but still not fleshed out - Immitability), there are enough that are done really well & interesting too. Pick up the book just for that. For me, the chapters covering org cycles and power were spectacular.
I love this book because of it's simplicity, well-created and explained topics. Furthermore, having a lot of case examples it's even a better way to understand it.

A Great Management tool with a detailed set of areas to consider while you work in your 4x4 cubicle to see through the lens whereby should you launch a new offering , will your customer buy ? What sort of power you have over your - Supplier , customer and eventually completion ? Is the landscape changing , can people copy you ? Do you need to have rights to be protected ? And so on and so forth... This book is good for people who are calling the shots in the companies or upcoming entrepreneurs or people myself who are keen to start their own Multi billion dollar enterprise - this is surly a great jen to store for future and use it when the need arises
The success of every business depends on the strategies a company consider from multiple points of views. The customer’s perspective, for example, you should therefore consider their needs and desires and the cost of your product. But when it comes to development, you will need to consider how imitable your products are and what your rivals are offering. Things like reviewing a product’s proposal could potentially help improve profits, which reduces the heavy price tag and reap greater benefits.
Super helpful book. Great way to monitor our company just by using the tools given. Tools also very well positioned makes it even easier to use. Furthermore, The simplicity combine with the clear explaination makes it easy to read and understand.
It also provide a lot of study case from big company. Very practical yet not too basic.
I was doubting this book before purcasing it coz it has only 3 review on. But glad i bought it
The Grid is an instant classic for any business or marketing manager eager to learn. Despite not deep diving in any subject it actually delivers really precious insights within a very strong framework that can be applied in any company or industry.
Really well structured strongly documented for further study with nice references. i will certainly come back to the grid to follow up and re-read in the future.
For me, this is smart writing with deep research and a clear approach, easy to understand. Looking at business as a whole to find the solution as well as balancing the things is not easy, but once we look at the system instead of a single department would fairly help the biz manager to make a better decision.
Great premise that there is something about the whole, but the book then proceeds to do exactly what it suggests you shouldn’t - deep dive into the details and hope they add up to the whole. It has great reflections, but turns out to be more of a checklist against a series of themes than a joining up
Very underrated book as all the explanations are very easy to understand for a dummy on business like me. So, for the curious dummies on business who pursued non business major like me totally recommended.
Definitely a source of good insights for who is interested to run a business. I found the book interesting as a not sales/business oriented person. It doesn't matter how big is your business because these rules and the knowledge provided applies to the majority of businesse.
Understanding the grid allow you to think more holistically. Always consider the various aspects of the grid before making a decision. Fine tune the grid to suit your needs.
Consider the multiple perspectives and 9 aspects of the the grid. Don’t based your price on your creation costs- it’s about how valuable customers consider the product.
