I am pleased to announce that in July 2024 a revised edition of THE DEVICE TRIAL was published by New Book Authors and BBradford Books. The story and characters remain the same, but edits, corrections and additions to the text have greatly increased the readability of the novel.
The Device Trial is the sequel to my first novel, The Complaint, the story that introduced NYC defense lawyer Brian Bradford. Brian was severely injured and hospitalized after the violent confrontation at the end of The Complaint. Having not learned his lesson from the first litigation against ZeiiMed, he decides upon his return to work to commence a second lawsuit against the billion dollar health care company. He agreed to file the suit after meeting the elderly Martha Dudley and learning that she was dying from a defective hip replacement Device manufactured by a subsidiary of ZeiiMed.
To obtain evidence that ZeiiMed knew of the defects, Brian must engage in illegal and unethical conduct that once again results in a life and death struggle with John Edison, the CEO of ZeiiMed. In preparing for trial again ZeiiMed, Brian realizes he has little chance of success without the invaluable assistance of his colleague Mary and his dear friend Meadhbh. Together they form a team that will hopefully bring ZeiiMed to its knees in a high profile trial in lower Manhattan.
A creative plan of sexual diversion is implemented to provide Brian with critical inculpatory documents hidden by ZeiiMed in a masterful deception. ZeiiMed, of course, refuses to accept defeat and unleashes a storm of violence on Brian and the women he cherishes. It's up to Brian to win both inside and outside the Courtroom, despite ZeiiMed's best efforts to destroy anyone in its path to victory.
The paper-pushing, New York defense attorney Brian Bradford continues his adventures inside and outside the Courtroom in my new novel, THE DRUG TAMPERING TRIAL, released by New Book Authors in the first week of December 2022. It's been a long time since THE DEVICE TRIAL was released in 2016, but I'm pleased that Brian can once again team-up with his colleague Mary and dear friend Meadhbh to confront the evil ZeiiMed's illegal distribution of tampered drugs to VA Hospitals. I hope you find the story entertaining.
In mid-May, 2017, I was notified that THE DEVICE TRIAL was the WINNER of the NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARD for a Legal Thriller. During all the days and months writing the novel, I never imagined in my wildest dreams receiving such an accolade. ON NOVEMBER 21, 2016, I WAS ALSO HONORED TO LEARN THAT THE DEVICE TRIAL IS A FINALIST IN THE 5th ANNUAL BEVERLY HILLS INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARDS. I AM TRULY HUMBLED BY THIS RECOGNITION FROM SUCH A PRESTIGIOUS, NATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED ORGANIZATION. ON OCTOBER 20, 2016, I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT MANHATTAN BOOK REVIEW WILL PUBLISH A FAVORABLE REVIEW AND THE NOVEL WILL BE GIVEN A STAR RATING OF 5 OUT OF 5. ALSO, I GREATLY APPRECIATE THAT THE BIG THRILL MAGAZINE PUBLISHED AN ARTICLE IN ITS JUNE EDITION DISCUSSING MY INTERVIEW ABOUT THE DEVICE TRIAL. THE ARTICLE MENTIONED THAT THE DEVICE TRIAL IS A "....CLIFF-HANGER..." THAT DRAWS ON MY "....INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS TO DELIVER A STORY RICH IN REALISM AND COMPLEX CHARACTERS."
THE DEVICE TRIAL BEGINS WITH NEW YORK ATTORNEY BRIAN BRADFORD SEVERELY INJURED AND HOSPITALIZED AFTER THE VIOLENT CONFRONTATION AT THE END OF MY FIRST NOVEL, THE COMPLAINT. HAVING NOT LEARNED HIS LESSON FROM HIS FIRST LITIGATION AGAINST ZEIIMED, HE DECIDES TO COMMENCE A SECOND SUIT AGAINST THE BILLION DOLLAR HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY. HE AGREED TO START THE SUIT AFTER MEETING THE ELDERLY MARTHA DUDLEY AND LEARNING THAT SHE WAS DYING FROM A DEFECTIVE METAL ON METAL HIP REPLACEMENT DEVICE MANUFACTURER BY A SUBSIDIARY OF ZEIIMED. TO OBTAIN EVIDENCE THAT ZEIIMED KNEW OF THE DEFECTS, BRIAN MUST ENGAGE IN ILLEGAL AND UNETHICAL CONDUCT THAT ONCE AGAIN RESULTS IN A LIFE AND DEATH STRUGGLE WITH JOHN EDISON, THE CEO OF ZEIIMED. IN PREPARING FOR TRIAL AGAINST ZEIIMED, BRIAN REALIZES THAT HE HAS LITTLE CHANCE OF SUCCEEDING WITHOUT THE INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE OF HIS COLLEAGUE MARY AND HIS DEAR FRIEND MEADHBH. TOGETHER THEY FORM A TEAM THAT WILL HOPEFULLY BRING ZEIIMED TO IT'S KNEES IN A HIGH PROFILE TRIAL IN THE SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK. MEADHBH HELPS BY DEVISING A CREATIVE PLAN OF SEXUAL DIVERSION THAT IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE BRIAN WITH CRITICAL INCULPATORY DOCUMENTS THAT WERE HIDDEN BY ZEIIMED IN A MASTERFUL DECEPTION. HOWEVER, ZEIIMED REFUSES TO ACCEPT DEFEAT AND UNLEASHES A STORM OF VIOLENCE INTENDED TO INFLICT DIRE CONSEQUENCES ON BRIAN AND THOSE CLOSE TO HIM. IT'S UP TO BRIAN TO WIN BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM, DESPITE HIS ADVERSARY'S BEST EFFORTS TO DESTROY ANY AND ALL OBSTACLES HINDERING A VICTORY BY ZEIIMED. OF COURSE, ZEIIMED BELIEVES THE PRIMARY OBSTACLE TO BE ERADICATED IS BRIAN AND THE WOMEN HE CHERISHES.
I JUST COMPLETED MY FIRST GIVE-AWAY FOR THE DEVICE TRIAL AND I LOOK FORWARD TO TO ADDING ADDITIONAL BOOKS TO THE PROGRAM.
I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway, thanks to the author, Tom Breen, and Goodreads for the opportunity. I wondered when I started the book if I was going to be at a disadvantage not reading the first book in the series, but I wasn't. There is plenty of information at the beginning of the book and throughout that brought me up to speed quick on Brian's previous dealings with ZeiiMed, but not too much from keeping me wanting to go back and check it out. I found the the whole process behind bringing a medical issue to trial and the courtroom action itself very interesting. Also enjoyed the other storylines related to the women in Brian's life and his ongoing narrative with himself in addition to his snarky attitude. I really liked the summary of each character's status at the end and I can't wait to see how Brian gets himself out of this problem!
I received this book through "Good Reads Giveaway."
This is a highly descriptive novel. The talented author is most comfortable in a courtroom setting. The book is enjoyable up to a point. There are a number of troublesome areas: the main character, Bradford, a lawyer by profession, responds in a very immature manner to many female acquaintances. He acts like a teenage boy experiencing the opposite sex for the first time. His wife has an unlikely platonic affair with Dr. Joe.
There is also an unfortunate misrepresentation of what an ER physician can diagnose in a patient with an eye injury using only an ophthalmoscope. He can only see inside the eye itself. He can not evaluate injury to the muscles of the eye or the bones about the orbit, in this manner, with this tool.
Overall, this book is a fun read, except for a few jarring incidents.
