I did not have super-high expectations for this book, as I am generally opposed to books that are entirely project-based, but I was pleasantly surprised! Alcohol inks really are a fast, inexpensive, and ridiculously easy way to make very dramatic changes to non-porous surfaces, so I think it was fine that it didn't delve into all the theory and technique I like to see in more advanced mixed media guides. While some of the projects were obvious or simple, many were truly unique and clever and yielded spectacular results, such as the starlit cloche and the tabletop globe. Despite considering myself rather seasoned at using alcohol inks, I found several surprising ideas in here that I am definitely going to try, particularly the rolling plastic drawer tray. The "after" photo in the book makes it look like a piece of fine wood furniture when finished!
Reading this book does not do it justice. You must CREATE the art, fashion, whatever! The book explains easily how to do this, and the illustrations are beautiful and the directions direct. As I have little to no artistic ability [but totally enjoyed reading and looking at the projects], I gave the book immediately to and arts and crafts person I believe will use many if not all of the ideas demonstrated. Her joy when I showed her the projects in the book, I believe, proved me correct.
Reviewing this book after winning it in a Goodreads giveaway. Thanks, Goodreads!
I initially got this book as a possible guide to help with crafting with my teens (I'm a teen librarian). After reading this, I'm less inclined to use it with my teens (mess and stains, and the fact that teens generally don't use things sparingly...) But now I think I just might use this in my own crafting! This is a guide that lays out, step by step, with clear and instructive pictures, how to accomplish them!
This book is great. Before reading it, I had not heard of alcohol inks. I like that it teaches you how to protect how to protect your work surfaces up front. Then it gives a variety of projects to try with step-by-step instructions and very colorful illustrations. I really like that it gives you confidence to try these projects and the courage to experiment on others.
This book is a very fun read! It's full of easy-to-follow demos and beautiful photos! Alcohol inks are such an amazing, versatile medium to work with and can be used on so many different types of surfaces. It was fun to learn about all the different projects and crafts that can be done.
Ok. There are a lot of things in here that I would never be interested in making in a million years, but there are a few projects that look cute that I would try. I did learn a couple things I didn’t know about alcohol inks, which was good. Since I have a whole caseload of them, I guess it was time. I was hoping this would explain more about techniques of painting with the inks, but it was very beginner and basic. I borrowed this on Libby.
