This was a great introduction to Australia that I read with my 6 year old son. We’re learning about different countries with Little Passports, and I like to enhance each month’s LP package by reading a couple of books about whatever country is featured that month.
This book is fun because it is told from the perspective of a little girl living in Australia. She walks you through a typical day, including what foods are typically eaten at meals and what things are learned in school. This book also includes a little bit about Australian history - a fun lesson I really appreciated!
Overall, this is a great book/series for introducing young readers to another county and culture - I highly recommend this series!
This is a Ready-to-Read book that is appropriate for about a second grader. Ruby takes the reader through her day both with her grandparents and at school telling readers about the country of Australia and its history. Excellent overall picture of the country of Australia, what it is like, and how it developed. Excellent support pictures.
Little Ruby takes readers on a tour of Australia by letting them follow her around for one typical day. While at school the history and culture of Australia come up, and various other aspects such as local foods and past-times are incorporated as well.
A great intro to the people and culture of modern Australia as well as a crash course in Australian history. Great resource for curious kids or lower grades studying Australia.
Living in... is a series that introduces beginning readers to kids from around the world. We learn some of the different geographies of the land and some of the major cities. Then, we spend a day in the life of each child from getting to ready for school to the end of the day. In between, we learn a little bit of history and some other facts pertaining to arts, culture, or sports. A glossary and a page of country facts are included.
This is the second we’ve read of this series and I was quite impressed. I thought it handled the colonial issue well and I liked the the character who is used as the “in” to the culture was being raised by her grandparents. I originally got these because of the South Korea one, to show the girls a bit of where I lived before I had them, but I’m now thinking of buying the set because they are super well done.
I was so excited to read this book but now I’m questioning this whole series and whether a series like this can/ should be written by one person. Some important parts of history left out and other parts portrayed in a highly biased way. So disappointing.
Another great entry in this series that portrays one day in a kids life in a foreign country. This one features a child in Australia. I loved her family was nontraditional. Elementary and up
