I’m so torn! I liked this story, I really did, and I wanna give it more stars, but... Have you ever gone out to dinner with friends? Had a great time, enjoyed the company and the jokes, but the food was just ‘meh’? That’s kinda how I’m feeling after reading Grim Nora and the Secret of the Skull; I still love my friends, despite the so-so night out, and we’re gonna do it again next weekend... at the same restaurant.

3.5 Cranky Stars

Nora just turned 16 and thought her life was going well. Despite losing her mother at a young age she was well cared for by her dad but recently he started to lose himself into his job and a bottle. The day Nora turns 16 she feels something is off but goes about her day and makes plans with her friends and boyfriend. Well that day is a day that will go down as the worst day ever for Grim Nora. She is sucked into a world she didn’t know existed, learned family history she had no i ...more

This is a serious must read for anyone who is into fantasy especially YA fantasy!
The first thing that really impressed me was the characters, all of them were very well developed and very well written with their own style, my personal favorite character in this story was Nora though I must admit I had a hard time picking my favorite character they are all so good in their own way.

Interesting story but
This was an interesting story but it seems to be missing transitions. Things are said or done and there is no reaction fron tue characters. It just goes to the next scene. There's also no build up or explanation to relationships like Gavin's. Or even Aiden's and Nora's. We know that those two liked each other but there was never internal dialogue or really a struggle about how Aiden was supposed to be alone or how Aiden didn't care about that rule. Nora never seemed to feel ...more

I rounded up. I would give it 3.5 stars- good story ideas, transitions need improvement. I think this is a good story for teenagers. It’s about Nora Youngblood who turns 16 and he father dies, she finds out she has an older brother and she has magical powers that were hidden from her. Her mother was killed when she was younger. She becomes a weapon and then her brother is kidnapped. Then she has to figure out how to free him. Her father kept secrets from her. It was interesting, however the writ

Not bad, could have been better.
This was a bit different then I expected. Author needs some work on bringing their ideas to page, just made me feel like they are just starting to write and figure out how they want the story to be put together. Most of the book I would say is good for young readers and I believe that the author meant the whole book for a young reader, but there is a couple of spots that just seem dark and not meant for someone too young to read.

My friend introduced this book to me. She knows me well ;) I usually go for what's on the shelf at B&N but this is a diamond in the rough. I enjoyed this book and it was hard to put down but a quick read. I loved the action and the characters Nora, Aidan, and Koneko. It starts out with her family's mysterious past and moves into another world where she must save her brother. I honestly thought it could have been fleshed out more, but if the next book explains more then I can't wait to read it! I

An exciting contemporary YA paranormal fantasy with lots of adolescent angst, family dramas, magic and martial arts, this novel is almost like a fairy tale and is quite enchanting. Nora's father dies on her sixteenth birthday, leaving her an orphan. The same night she is betrayed by her boyfriend and a long-term friend; then discovers a brother of whom she never knew, and a secret society. Endearing characters populate the novel, and readers will cheer on strong and determined heroine Nora.

Grim Nora and the Secret of the Skull is very fast paced - which is good as the story doesn't drag - but also, it means that things are sometimes touched upon on a surface level and the narrative doesn't really go as in-depth as it could in terms of characterization. The characters are slightly one dimensional sometimes, and it's strange how easily they accept situations. I would've liked to see a character growth arc but nobody except for Nora and ma ...more

I was very happy to receive this book from a giveaway here on goodreads. I got this book and really didn't have an expectations for it but was highly pleased with it. Having a rather normal upbringing/life, Nora the protagonist, faces a complete 180 degree when her father supposedly shoots himself on her 16th birthday… and not a regular 180 that any daughter would face after losing a parent…she is also thrust into a magical world where hidden shocking family secrets are slowly uncovered.
