Runaway Pony

Anna's pony, Prince, a little Icelandic Pony, is growing up. It's time to start training him to walk with a halter and lead line. On his very first lesson, Anna accidentally walks him past a noisy tractor. Terrified, Prince rears and runs away, but grandmother shows her that with patience and love she can win back her pony's trust.

This is the sequel to Winter Pony -- not to be confused by the popular children's book of the same title by Jean Slaughter Doty. This pony book is set in Iceland. Not a lot of children's books set in Iceland.

Prince is a liver chestnut Icelandic Pony. He's about two years old. His young owner, Anna, is halter breaking him. Unfortunately, a loud clanking tractor comes by and off Prince goes like a pony rocket. Fortunately, Anna's grandmother has a trick for getting the pony back.

Okay, there's not much of a story, but it does kindness to animals. It is also part Icelandic Tourist Board promotion.

The watercolor illustrations are FAB. They are colorful, detailed, and filled with other animals like wild ducks and a little dog. The illustrator has Anna looking right at the reader in the first painting, as if she is inviting you along to help with Prince.

I would not recommend letting a three-year-old choose your books for you. Practical horse wrangling tips for the young Icelandic girl. The illustrations were very really gorgeous though.
