This is a book that made me immensely sad. As an immigrant, my heart goes out to the many men and women who leave their homeland in search of a better life on foreign shores. But this collection takes it one step further because it is not just about being transplanted in a foreign land, but a foreign environment in general. Torres's short stories capture the feelings of alienation, of loneliness ... but of an even stronger longing for a better life. I often wonder about the paradox of economic s ...more

The stories in “Mariposa Gang and Other Stories” by Catherine Torres had felt very Filipino that I could not help but be amazed with how this author managed to create such relatable and likeable characters that highlighted their nationalities, and this was regardless of the current locations of the characters. Not all stories contained a certain plot to follow through, however, the stories were still fascinating in its own ways. Overall, I simply fell in love with the writing style of these shor ...more

Catherine Torres (Catherine Rose Torres) is a diplomat and writer from Manila. Her work has taken her to postings in New Delhi, Singapore, and now, Berlin. When foreign affairs, as well as domestic ones, permit, Catherine travels around the world on boats made of words. Occasionally, as with these books, she even builds the boat herself.
