("What's your favourite opening?", said the actress to the bishop)
Ahem.. This is an incredibly thorough and informative book on openings for the beginner player who would like to improve and add a more theoretical aspect to their game. This deals with the most common openings, with a good range of variations covered, and makes for a useful tool for both white and black (that's not a racial comment, honest!) as well as having several chapters of advice about opening theory in general, pawn power, and tactical aspects of piece development. A very good book, only neglected by myself as it was partially superceded by other books on the opening.
