Bound by Marriage

Rate this book
A marriage on his terms.

The pact Jessica Randall makes with wealthy New Zealand rancher Gabe Dumont is simple: in exchange for marriage and an heir, he will save her family property. It's calculating and completely devoid of any tenderness, just like the man himself. But things soon get very complicated as secrets and mistrust, jealousy and ultimatums take over, threatening Jessica's ability to maintain her emotional distance. Worst of all, the sizzling attraction between them is suddenly making this marriage of convenience decidedly inconvenient!

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

Obviously I have been on the quite the Harlequin-style binge lately because, well, GOODWILL SCORE.

But I mean, seriously though, how can you say no to covers like this?

description

And titles like this?

description

I mean look^^^, even Arthur is cringing smiling with joy.

It's like an empty calorie filled treat that you just can't say no to.

description

Now, being that this was one of those UBER-SERIOUS, HIGH QUALITY Harlequin-esque "Silhouette Desire" kinds of deals...

1) It was about one of those "forced marriage" situations that would never happen in real life.

Unless you lived on a farm.

In the 1800's.

description

I shamelessly lurve this overdone, overused, SLUT of a trope.

Seriously though.

LOVE IT.

Arranged marriage to merge the family business?
Sure!

Forced marriage to save the family farm?
Hell yes!

Obligatory marriage because you knocked home girl up?
Count me the fuck in!

Being that this was the aforesaid "Silhouette Desire" variety, this thing was short.

181 pages short.

Thus, this book jumped right into things - which I love.

Jessica was little miss married-off martyr (check OUT that alliteration) and Gabe was the asshole alpha rancher who wanted his marriage to be an emotionless business arrangement.

Sounds fun, right?

Totally.

HOWEVER.

2) As mentioned above, this thing was short.

And - being that I am a Nalini Singh WHORE as well as a forced marriage trope whore, I KNOW what she can do.

And this short book format did NOT give her enough space to fully stretch out her wings for flying, people.

It was like listening to Christina Aguilera sing that vocally stifling "Genie in a Bottle" bullshit, looking like this:

description

When she should be busting out "Beautiful" in all her singin' pipe glory.

description

BOOM.

So yeah, that's about it in a nutshell.

I liked it well enough, I just wish it had been longer.

Because of it's length, the "change" in the characters felt a little...abrupt. And so did the ending.

Regardless, I've been wanting to read this for a long time, because it's by Nalini Singh...and she could shit on a piece of college ruled notebook paper and I'd want to take a gander.

Thus, all in all, I considered it a win to find it at GW...and the book itself was pretty much what I expected it to be.

So a good deal in my book.

***Big shout out to my sexy books models, Alpha dog Arthur and Sexy Sammie Boo.

Dakota Kat wasn't featured today...but that's because she was otherwise occupied...

Uh. This could have been so good. Cruel, emotionally-shutdown hero offers heroine a marriage of convenience (sex for an heir and no love). Heroine agrees because her lifelong crush just married someone else and she wants to keep the ranch she inherited from developers.

Hero reminds me of Diana Palmer’s best heroes – cruel and blunt in how they hurt the heroine’s feelings. He is ice cold and hard to warm up to. This hero has a traumatic backstory that the neighbors all know about, but only the hero knows the true horror of his family situation.

The story opens after the heroine had been away from New Zealand for a year. Hero felt she should pursue her art education before settling down to marriage (and he wanted to be sure she was over the OM).

Heroine returns with a lot of paintings and the faint hope that the OM would leave his pregnant wife for her based on a drunken call where he proclaimed his love for her and his boredom with his wife.

Gross, heroine. What is wrong with you?

Heroine’s inexplicable crush on the OM ruined it for me. There were way too many scenes with the heroine thinking about the OM or directly speaking/engaging with him. He was the typical whiny OM. Why waste page space on this loser? I was just as annoyed as the hero when the heroine kept describing OM as her best friend when he shows no signs of being a good person, worthy of any loyalty.

The worst transgression of the heroine was when she told the OM before the hero that she was pregnant with the hero’s baby. Sure, OM’s wife guessed – but come on. That is low.

The hero is so damaged by his childhood that he changes his mind about wanting a baby and is very cold to the heroine and even the idea of creating a family life once the baby is born.

Heroine finally wakes up to the OM and manages to bring the hero around and sell a bunch of paintings at a gallery opening.

There were some great angsty scenes – so if you can stomach a fickle heroine and a cold hero – give it a whirl.

I remembered that I’ve read this one at the second chapter but because the H was cold and cruel b*astard, I continued the process. Yes, it’s not worthy to be not forgotten but due to angst, 3,5 stars.

This is a standard MOC novel for the most part, except that the h still carries a torch for an unworthy teenage crush, and the H is a cruel, emotionally arrested superbaby. His proposed method for dealing with an is as ludicrous as the one in Uncertain Destiny, and that is saying something. However, the difference between the H in this book and the one in Uncertain Destiny makes all the difference. UD's H was clearly crazy about the h, whereas the H in this one was all about fighting his feelings, all the way up to the end of the book. He is cold, cruel and insulting throughout.

In terms of safety, there's an OW flitting around the sidelines, and the h carries a torch for her loser crush.

This is a 1 star for the romance, 5 star for the H's ridiculous and memorable pushing away and cruelty.

I hated the hero more and more and at the same time I loved the book more and more as the story progressed! He was cold, ruthless, dark, tortured and the story was angsty, emotional and heartwrenching; Exactly my cuppa:) I would rate it with 5 stars if the hero groveled more in the end but IMO -even for someone who likes cold heroes- he should have snapped out of his unbending and harsh behavior earlier if he were to redeem himself. It's been ages since I last read an HQ, but this one made me want to try some more!

It took me awhile to warm up to the heroine. She annoyed me with her love for the other man, Damon, who turned out to be a loser. He had a wife and a baby on the way but he fell out of love with her and wanted the heroine back. They were childhood friends and Jess thought she was in love with him but he wasn't in love with her until she went away of course. By that time she had become engaged to the hero, Gabe. I didn't like him. At all. Even at the end I didn't. And there was a part in the book where the heroine overheard him talking to his evil ex lover Sylvie saying Jessie won't make waves and that she didn't know something or that he would ever tell her and I am not sure it ever explains it. Maybe about the fire? I am not sure. I didn't like that the ex was involved with either one of them. It was just not right. And the hero saying he would never love the child. I understood why but it still pissed me off. Of course once the son is born, even before, he was totally in love with him but that doesn't mean I have to like him. He got better but it was just too late for me. Now the heroine did grow on me but the first 30% of the book I wanted to DNF because she was just annoying. The mystery of the fire kind of surprised me and I was like WOW! Didn't see that coming and I do love this author's writing style. She kept me involved in the story. I just wish the hero wouldn't have been such a hard ass and a jerk. All they really had was good sex. The ending was cute and I did think they would live happily ever after.

*** New Review - 10/07/16- 2 stars. ***
I dont know how I reviewed it 3 stars for the first time...
You know how a cold-hearted jerk sounds like but I have to give some credit that stupid heroine also for the disaster of the book. The heroine loved someone else still married the hero and you know what? Till 85% of the book, she was in love with that stupid OM and suddenly she realized that she is in love with the hero.

The hero was no better... I already mentioned that he was a cold-hearted jerk and doesn't know a thing about respecting women or I say more precisely respecting his wife. But I can't blame him at some point because if you know your wife is constantly yearning for OM then what would you do? Well, what he did was maintaining a good relationship with his ex-lover. Hypocrisy/ Double Standard.....

Well, In the end, I decided that these two deserve each other. HEA

Heroine is in love with a man who is married to someone else and he is also expecting a baby with his wife. Heroine is distressed and she accepts a marriage of convenience with a rich rancher. He will save her house, she will give him an heir. But her husband is a complex sexy man and Jessica starts forgetting her old unrequited love and starts developing feelings for her brooding husband.

I adored this book! Loved the angst, the jealous possessive hero and I loved to hate the other man. He was a cheating asshole but thankfully Jessica was a decent heroine who respected her wedding vows from day one! I was glad when she left the damaged hero for the sake of her unborn baby. This is the kind of heroine I can respect!

Behold ladies and gentlemen, my first feminist rant for 2014...

I was wary about trying Nalini Singh's "contemporary" novels and I know now that I was right to be wary.

I have always found an underlying double standard in most of her paranormal novels. For example, in most of the books I have read of hers, the hero tends have a fair number of conquests, whereas the heroine tends not to have any, or if she does, it is only a very few. Most of her heroes tend to be alpha males. Overall, I find too many similarities between most of her books. With the exception of two or three of her novels, I could never really enjoy them.

While reading this novel, I came across several words, imageries and metaphors that she used to differentiate between masculinity and femininity. Such as she uses words with a lot of strength and power to highlight masculine tendencies. She also went so far as to say something like: feminine submissiveness. As if there is a trait of submissiveness that is inherent in females only... Also, her characters weren't very enjoyable. I found Gabriel very contradictory and honestly it didn't make sense. He says something like, he does not want nor need her love, but he is has masculine pride at being her first lover. Well why should he care anyway? Or maybe he was already falling in love with her, even then, and he just wasn't willing to admit it? Usually, I understand these subtle clues about when the characters are falling in love. But in this one, even in the end, I couldn't tell you when and how he came to be in love with her.

And Jess. It seemed to me that she was painted in the typical women-can't-make-love-without-falling-in-love light. She was supposedly in love with Damon, a love which she in typical fashion rejects, holding her parents' death responsible for her dependency on Damon. She also couldn't stop melting whenever Gabe touched her. No matter how upset and angry she was. Words like "inevitable" were used whenever he touched her. I mean, come on...

I've read a couple of Nalini Singh's books and this one was a freebie at my public library that I took advantage of. Bound by Marriage was an okay read for me. The only dislike I had with the story was the hero. He was written as a dominant character but I think he was too forceful and believed he could settle everything with intimacy with the heroine. Although there was bit of an age difference between the two, I thought the heroine also was a bit too submissive when he did impose the intimacy on her every time there was a disagreement of to soothe his jealousy.

A solid 2.5 (rounded 3) Stars on this one.

This one is a quick, boring read that is utterly perfect for the time when you want to switch off your brains and want something mindless so that you may tune out the random buzzing in your head. Okay no it wont help with any buzzing rather it would kinda make your mind whirl a bit since its so so predictably bad.

But then again you don't always want to read brilliant literary works especially not when the only purpose of your reading is to kill time. I read this one while I was waiting on things and did not want anything too distracting or engrossing to make me take my mind off completely from my task at hand and yet help me pass the time. I read this with music on that I was listening and still it did not matter much.

Nalini Singh' Gabe and Jessica are nothing out of the ordinary, they enter a marriage of convenience. He needs an heir since he has turned 35 and thinks might as well make good on the swimmers while they are still in the prime before its too late and she needs money to save her family property.

Experienced man who is so good in bed that he can make a woman come just by looking at her ends up with a oh so not experienced virgin who becomes putty in his hands and unleashes the sex goddess within her the moment he puts his hands on her.

They don't wanna fall in love for their own reasons but can't help it when they get married and are having the best sex of their lives. No wait that is applicable only to him - since she was a virgin and can't hold a candle to his performance.

Misunderstandings, lame fights ensue, his dark past comes out and woman conquers the man and makes him human.

A typical blah romance.

First, let me say that the Greek title is more intriguing that the one the prototype has. Jessica and Gabe's story was a classic one. It had all the right ingredients for a perfect romance story and I enjoyed reading it, even if cowboy-related romance stories is not by favorite ones.

The category romance formula usually has a bunch of things I dislike (asshole MMC, virgin FMC with body betrayal syndrome, insufficient grovel) and yet I keep getting a random craving every once in a while.

This book had all of the above, plus a forced marriage / marriage of convenience situation and a few reveals I did not expect. One minute I was thinking “let’s see what craziness I’ll find in this book” and next thing I knew I’d gotten to the end.

I’m glad Nalini Singh went on to write full length romances because whew, she can really write a page turner.

YAk.. cerita Harlequine kedua dr Tante Nalini Singh yang gw baca.. yg pertama itu Craving Beauty (Silhouette Desire, #1667) by Nalini Singh .. [image error] Dan ini?? Inilah..

yaah.. Gabriel memang menyebalkan.. [image error]

Minta di timpuk.. [image error]

minta di tampol.. [image error]

tapii.. disini gw katakan.. Gw juga sebel sama sifat naive nya si Jessica.. [image error]

Aseelliii.. Naif banget.. entah apa yang dia pikirin saat2 dimana dy membuat Gabriel marah dan berbicara kasar karna Gabriel memang menyebalkan..
Harusnya..

^^ [image error]

gabe is such a cold man.der was nthg attractive nor lovable abt him. i can't believe how or when jessica fell in love wid him. she was very much obsessed wid damon n then suddenly she knew it was gabe she loved. i didn't buy it 4 1 sec ! she let mind-blowing sex wid gabe influence her. it was such a cold blooded pact they had made. i mean in other books, they make a MOC but they are also very much attracted while here they made it in cold blood. jessica wanted 2 preserve her parents hard work n 2 move on since damon had chosen kayla over her; while gabe wanted an undemanding wife, a piece of furniture n ofc heirs which he ultimately decided he did not want. frankly a man, who tells me he does not want our child n will be sending him 2 boarding school the 1st opportunity he got, is simply disgusting. he had issues from the past, what happened 2 him was awfully traumatic. he was damaged, so he shud have stayed away from marriage. jessica did leave him at the end but it was not soon enough 4me :-P Onu, think i will stick 2 present ones

An OK read.
Heroine is in love with another guy.
The best part for me was the end.
After professing not to want the baby and wanting to send the kid to boarding school as soon as he/she is of an age to be shipped out his falling in love with the baby in the eighth month of her pregnancy was endearing.

I know I read this before but I didn't remember much of the story. It's a rather dark novel. Gabe is a hard man. He's cold and cruel through most of the story. That can work for me on occasion. It did and didn't in this case. While I didn't hate him - or the story - it isn't a favorite.

I do not know what book people have read, but it's clearly not this one. There is no such thing as incest or rape in this book, as claimed by other reviewers. I just finished reading this book cover to cover, and I do not know what people are on about.

Yes, the hero is slightly older than the heroine. By nine years. Which makes him entirely too young to have raped anyone and fathered his own wife... I mean...really. He's closed up and sad, but that's because his father was abusive to his mother, and his parents and 3 siblings died in a fire.

Yes, the heroine is slightly immature at first, but if you read the book, you see her growing into her own person from chapter to chapter, and never giving up on her broken husband. This is a true HEA in true Harlquin style.

Nalini Singh obviously wrote this years ago, as you can tell her writing has since changed. She has grown into her own style since. This is a very introspective story, with the heroine working things out in her head until the very end. This book as put me in the mood to seek out more of Nalini Singh's older stories.

Kayaknya judulnya terbalik, menanti cinta Jess deh, soalnya Jess-nya yg setelah menikah tetap mengharapkan Damon, memang sih Damon itu first love-nya tp kan Damon jelas2 ga membalasnya malah menghamili & menikahi Kayla. Harusnya udah komitmen nikah dgn Gabe (walau demi tanah keluarga spy tdk disita bank) ya berusaha jadi istri yg baik dong. Tapi memang kesana2nya Jess duluan yg jatuh cinta ke Gabe setelah sadar ke Damon itu cibta monyet lagian masa mau merebut suami orang. Sikap Gabe yg dingin akibat kematian tragis ibu & adik2nya (ibunya sengaja membakar rumah & anak2nya utk lepas dari suami yg ringan tangan, Gabe lolos krn membuang susu yg sdh dibubuhi obat tidur). Suka dengan Jess yg tdk mau tunduk & membuat Gabe mengejar & mengakui cintanya. Walau prosesnya dipercepat krn novel hq ga bisa terlalu panjang.

Kind of Linda Howard like, with the aggressive, emotionally distant, sexy hero who was just a little too scary to really seem human. He's 9 years older than Jessie. She agreed to marry him in exchange for him saving her family's foreclosed land. The deal included him supporting her for a year while she worked on her painting in LA. The book starts with her return to her hometown and their almost immediate wedding.

Gabe was extremely distant emotionally and I thought he was kind of verbally abusive. Any time she started getting "too close" he would really lash out at her. Under the circumstances, I just don't get how she could fall in love with him the way that she did. There just wasn't enough impetus for it. But it was a good read and he was a decent male character, especially for this type of book.

This book reminded me a lot of Diana Palmer's early work. The hero's soul is so tortured that he'll shred the heroine's heart before admitting the power she has over him.

We get a lot of insight into the heroine's motivations and point of view, but nobody else's. I love Singh's current books, but I didn't like this one nearly as much. Though it was well-crafted, it failed to touch a chord in me. I could objectively understand the heroine's rationales for her actions, but would never want to be the kind of person who did the things she did for those reasons.

That aside, the work had a well-thought out plot that unfolded beautifully. I wish the secondary characters had been a bit more fleshed out, but for a series romance this was pretty good.

I don't think I'll re-read this one ever, but I still want to try more of Singh's early work.

The book is about a marriage that begins as a cold deal between two persons that do not love each other. Gabriel is the quintessential domineering men, whereas Jess is a simple woman. Jess is not stunning, not especially witty, she is by no way a kick-ass kind of heroine, but she knows that she needs nerve to cope with her husband, and she finds it. The first pages, when they begin their marriage are absolutely compelling. While they begin their relationship with passion, passion it is not enough, so they struggle until they learn to trust and respect each other. This is one of my all time favorites.
*****
After reading myself this book yet another time I wondered why I am so engaged with this book. I think it struck a chord: it's about learning to love, and about sometimes the first love is not THE love or your life. And Gabe is... compelling (to say the least).
