Daisy's Gift: The Remarkable Cancer-Detecting Dog Who Saved My Life

Claire Guest was walking her dogs when Daisy, a fox red Labrador, nudged her breast insistently and stared up into her face with her big brown eyes. Sensing something was wrong, Claire visited her GP and soon found out she had a very deep – and difficult to diagnose – form of breast cancer. Daisy had saved her life, simply by smelling her cancer.

With her scientific background and deep love of dogs, Claire intuited that Daisy and her canine pals could save many more lives, and set up the charity Medical Detection Dogs. Though faced with many challenges, Claire and her dogs have proven to be a remarkable asset to cancer detection, and have changed the lives of many seriously ill people and their families.

This is the story of how our relationship with dogs can unleash life-saving talents, changing not only the medical world, but our own lives too.

Obawiałam się tego tytułu. Mój stosunek do psów to kombinacja lęku i niechęci. Coś jak z dzieciaczkami - życzę im wszystkiego co najlepsze, byle gdzieś poza wyznaczaną dla mnie przestrzenią. Zwyciężyła jednak chęć sukcesywnego eksplorowania ulubionej serii i... oto jestem.

Jako czytelnicy otrzymujemy dużo więcej, niż mogłaby sugerować okładka. Wspomniana w podtytule suczka, jej bohaterski wyczyn to jedynie kropla w morzu poruszanej tematyki. Umiarkowanie dogłębny rekonesans życiorysu autorki przeplata się z meandrami naukowo-technicznymi zapoczątkowanego przez nią projektu.

Po raz pierwszy zetknęłam się z konceptem psich ratowników, dla których substytutem peleryny i napędu odrzutowego jest... ich własny nos. To właśnie on pełni rolę oręża w walce z czołówką najpopularniejszych ówcześnie chorób (nowotwory, cukrzyca, alergie). Biorąc pod uwagę moje wcześniejsze wyznanie, można by pomyśleć, że i tu górować będzie sceptycyzm. Niespodzianka! Nie jest to prawda. Gotowa jestem zawierzyć skuteczności czworonożnej alternatywy, choćby przez wzgląd na specyfikę ichniejszych zmysłów, tego jak hojnie zostały wyposażone przez matkę naturę.

Mam za to problem z samą zawartością i sposobem jej podania. Początek zapowiadał się naprawdę obiecująco, jednak następujące dalej po sobie rozdziały wprawiały mnie w coraz większe znużenie. Wydaje się, jakby Claire Guest kluczyła po orbicie badawczo-promocyjnej (dużo nazwisk - personelu, darczyńców, postaci przyczyniających się do rozwoju aktualnego kształtu fundacji) i niechętnie przystawała na jej opuszczenie. Personalne wycieczki nie zawsze ciekawiły, raczej dopełniają całokształt obrazu autorki. Order najmocniejszego i pozytywnie wyróżniającego się elementu wędruje za to do bezpośrednich relacji, głosu wszystkich tych, którzy są adresatami psiego wsparcia. Fragmenty opisujące poprawę komfortu życia pacjentów grzały serducho lepiej, niż najdroższy termofor.

W ogólnym rozrachunku - tytuł lepszy niż zakładałam, choć plasuje się gdzieś w dole mojego "EKO" rankingu. Nie najciekawsza pozycja w serii.

This book is about a pioneering work and the foundation of the Medical Detection Dogs Charity.

However, it’s also a very human story, telling the life story of Claire Guest, and how her connection with and love for dogs, led her to forge this path, through much opposition and personal pain, to change the lives of so many for the better, and in many cases save lives. One of the lives saved was her own, when her dog Daisy detected a deep cancer, that could have otherwise taken months to show up.

And the star of the show is of the course the dogs...as well as Daisy, there are the stories of Ruffles, Minstrel, Tarka, Dill, Woody, Tangle, Midas & Florin. Each with their own personality, and their own story to tell.

Such an enlightening book showing the true talent of both the dogs and the trainers. As I hope to apply for a medical alert dog soon, my mum bought me this book to give me a little more insigt and Im so delighted to know the training and the trainers' attitudes are humane and aimed to truly let the dogs have a fulfilling and happy life

This book isnt just for dog lovers, it can give us all a bit of hope and gratitude for all the amazing work that is being done to truly change lives

This is a fabulous book. The dogs are inspiring and I’m amazed at how the events in Claire’s life came together to make her perfect for creating a charity that uses dogs and their gift of smell to save lives. The pics were helpful in keeping all of Claire’s dogs straight as she mentioned many. If you love dogs and appreciate how extraordinary they are this is a book to read.

A very touching story about dogs and their ability to help humans detect even early-stage diseases. The story is narrated by the woman who created such an organization and trains dogs herself. If you're in love with dogs, this might be a book for you.
