in 1992, i thought it was important that a person could walk into barnes & noble and exchange $50 for a book with pictures of half-naked men in it.

but i was a teen. i didn't have $50. by the the time i'd saved enough, the limited-edition run had sold out.

so i bought it in french.

i don't speak french. i couldn't understand anything written in it except l'amour. and sexe.

but i loved it anyway.

because steven meisel had taken some amazing photographs of madonna, and i loved both steven

I once started an academic paper with a quote from Madonna's book. Although the reviewer's comments were generally rather lukewarm, they went out of their way to praise the "terrific opening sentence" and it got accepted.

If this trick works for you too, I will appreciate a word of thanks in the acknowledgements section.

So, I was at my bondage master's condo last night when I made some obscure reference to Madonna and he said, "I have the Madonna book," and then I was all like:

"Mr. Peabody's Apples?"

"The English Roses?"

"Lotsa De Casha?"

Oh yeah. In the early 1990s (when I was in junior high), Madonna did the Sex book. First of all, you have to be really careful turning pages because of the spiral binding. Second of all, there are a bunch of lyrics from the Erotica album that all these years I thought were

"Sex" by Madonna is a ground-breaking book about sex. The photos are enticing, sexy, suggestive, and compelling. Curiosity pushes people to leaf thru this book and, boy, do they get an eyeful. This book exposes the viewer to a variety of sex in a very tasteful and easily accessible way. This book helps define sex that is out of reach for most people.

It's an adventure to pick up this book and peruse the photos. Read it several times. You'll always see something different - a new detail in a

I'll teach you how to fuck.

Whether you love her or hate her, Madonna is a cultural icon beyond compare. For well over the thirty years now, the Queen of Pop has re-invented herself, her music and her image time and time again, somehow managing to stay one step ahead of her contemporaries. Before the days of raunchy sex tapes and revealing hacked-from-cellphone selfies turning nobodies into celebrities, Madonna was hiring photographers (both still and moving alike) to follow her around L.A. while she visited the locker

I actualy had to do a report on this piece of crap in college. I do believe it can serve a purpose tho... whenever Madonna starts acting high and mighty and pretending that she is a noble born British Lady, someone should show her a copy of this book and say " nope, your just a whore..."

I simply had to rate a coffee-table book that declares "My pussy has 9 lives" and “Everybody loves you when they are about to cum.” While fascinating and wildy observant, Madonna is certainly no Ayn Rand. With gorgeous photography by Steven Meisel, our lady of the whip teases with exposed perky nipples - see Madonna getting paddled, see Madonna biting a jock's bare butt, see Madonna hitchhiking naked in stilettos. She rambles on about S&M, sex with old people and how much she loves her ...more

most stimulating book ever!!!!!!!!!! :)

A lot of the writings are pretty bad, but the audacity of the photos, coming from someone at the height of their career, is thrilling. There's also an unapologetic freedom to them that is inspiring.

Amazingly erotic, artistic, sexual, taboo, dirty, funny, sinful, romantic, passionate and painful. A piece of iconic pop history. I dare you to read it and live it!!!

You know, I gotta give credit to the pretentious queen Madonna. For someone who is as famous as she, and to have the audacity to open up to the world in this way is quite brave. I didn't particularly enjoy the content itself, but examining this as a work of artistic expression with a big grain of salt- I gotta give her credit. I could never bare myself to the world this way and I commend her for doing that and being very open to taboo, forbidden ideas and images.

It was time to strip this book naked from all those legends and stories and see what the fuss was (still is?) about. Well there are some pretty good pictures with beautiful people, with beautiful naked bodies. No problems with beauty. Again some pictures felt rather unnecessary, redundant in my opinion or just too close of not being sexy at all. Nakedness certainly doesn't equal sexy picture. But oh well, now I know what this book is about, and it certainly isn't about Madonna's writing skills.

Possibly the most poorly manufactured book ever. I worked in a bookstore when this came out and I can't tell you how many damaged copies came back.

As for the content? She sets out to be shocking just to be shocking and it's not artistic in the least.

The most offensive part of the book? Vanilla Ice.

I first encountered this in college, and I probably appreciate it so much because the Instructor who presented it to me had had a great impression on me. He helped me to see how "smart" performers like Madonna really are. I don't think this book is meant to be shocking for pure shock value, but it is meant to be a social/political/racial/sexual/colonial/imperial critique.

Far too tame for all the hype. OMG, and her little ramblings will make you cringe, they're so bad. But there are some pics that show Madonna's weird sense of humor (like the basketball court shots with the two skinheads, and Vanilla Ice...WTF?). She's best when she's goofy.

Eh, not the greatest prose, some cringe-worthy moments, beautiful sexy delicious pictures, some poetic lines, my favorite of which was "the sky was the color of pussy."

Check it out if you can find it, don't freak out if you can't.

Although the famous Madonna was very daring to produce an explicit book about sex, which expresses vivid fantasies regarding many taboos, the book has poor literary value. Too much publicity.

great pictures and plenty of baughty writings - I wanted this book back in the 90's and I finally have one in my collection - a must-have for Madonna fans who loved her "Erotic" phase
I'm glad this exists, and glad I was able to borrow a copy of it via InterLibraryLoan even though it's rare and notorious for its fragile binding. (Sex by Madonna has been the number one most searched-for out-of-print book the last several years, which is quite the testament to its longevity and appeal.) There were several times my partner and I winced while reading Madonna's out-of-touch commentaries throughout it. That said, the erotic photography throughout this book was consistently ...more

After “viewing” it, not much words in it, I realized it’s a perfect coffee-table book. Lot’s of photographs though, and some of them are good while others reflect the superstar’s personal sexual fantasies. I was going through her bio the other day and then I learnt about this book. Seems like it was quite famous and still might be, 22 years though, since it came out and as the sub-header describes the book, “The Best BDSM & Fetish Photo-art of 20th
OK, so I'm only a couple of decades behind. I was always mildly curious about this book, but like all books that one is mildly curious about for 20 years, one realizes that maybe the curiosity is more than mild and must be satisfied. So I got possession of an e-book version of this, complete with all the art and text. It's arranged as a sort of narrative, with Madonna as Dita, and there's a love quadrangle of sorts involving her and a lesbian lover and a boyfriend and another boyfriend who may ...more

I remember how huge a deal it was when this book was released (I was in Year 12 at school). I remember a friend of mine buying it, and then bringing it to school so we could all look at it, and the sense of awe we all had leafing through it. I remember Madonna hitchhiking in the nude. I remember liking it, but not much else!

I've always loved Madonna, and one night when I got drunk I decided to order this from eBay, having never, for obvious reasons, been allowed to read it when I was a young closeted teenager.

It's every bit as fabulous as i imagined. It's full of her naked, and in suggestive poses with some of the dancers who accompanied her on the Blond Ambition Tour of 1990

She is a goddess.

This book taught me and my friend that we'd both love to sleep with Madonna. A surprise, perhaps, for him, because he's so staunchly gay. A surprise, definitely, for me, because I was, up until that point, hetero-identified. Not anymore! Thanks, Madge!

Was young when this was out in bookstores and sold wrapped for XXX reasons but I was still old enough to remember it being a big deal. I think it fascinating, not trite, and gorgeously photographed. Madonna has balls and is a Goddess at this time in her life-- bow down.

A masterpiece of hype. I was too broke to buy one and too good to steal one, but I did get plenty of opportunities to examine it, since it sat around on a lot of coffee tables for a period of the early-mid '90s.
