Loved this read and everything about it. Emily goes back to Oyster Bay where she grew up, she and Rachel her sister were brought up by they're grandparents as their parents had died in an horrific accident.

Three years later we see her return, shes broken up with her fella who wanted to marry her.

She manages to get a job as an Events manager where she meets someone.

This is an emotional story, a Happy ever after.

Emily Tate is returning to her childhood home on Oyster Bay. When she was younger her parents died and she and her sister, Rachel were raised by their loving grandparents. Emily has been gone for three years and has just broken up with her boyfriend when he asked her to marry him. She will be working at Water's Edge Inn. SUMMER AT OYSTER BAY introduces Emily to her new boss Charles Peterson. He is going to be expanding the inn and Emily is supposed to help him with that. Soon, Emily finds herself surrounded by those she loves in a place that is filled with memories. Can life get any better? Emily doesn't think so until she learns that part of the expansion of the inn will include destroying her childhood home.


Can Emily teach Charlie how important the island and her home are to her? SUMMER AT OYSTER BAY is going to pull at your heart. Jenny Hale describes the setting and the characters feelings perfectly. So much so that you won't be able to stop yourself from falling in love with all of them. Your heart will break for Emily and all she has to go through. On one hand, her feelings for Charlie are extremely strong but on the other hand, how can she let him destroy her home and all the memories that go along with it?


I have only read Jenny Hale's Christmas books and love them. SUMMER AT OYSTER BAY is even better. Jenny is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. She makes me feel so many different things while I'm reading her heart-warming stories. One minute I'm giggling and the next there is a huge lump in my throat. All of the characters are flawed in different ways, but you will find yourself cheering for them throughout the book. My heart melted when Charlie finally figured out what he really wanted. I tried not to rush through the story of Rachel and Jeff . I truly wanted the two of them to work out their problems and repair their relationship. I just wanted to reach in the pages and give them all hugs. I can't wait to read more by this wonderful author.

This book should really come with a warning to make sure readers have a box of tissues at the ready! It is an emotively written, delightful read that takes the reader through the whole gamut of emotions before attaining that elusive but desired HEA.

Emily Tate is returning to her childhood home after three years of city living that just showed her how wrong the city is for her. She’s staying in the home her Grandfather built, the home she grew up after the tragic death of her parents, the home that is packed with happy childhood memories, set in an idyllic location. She’s starting a new job as Events manager in the Water’s Edge Inn which has recently been taken over by Charles Peterson. He has plans to expand the Inn, plans she things are good till she discovers the cost - he intends destroying the very home she’s returned to. As their attraction builds, their different upbringings and expectations are highlighted, tearing them apart. Can they love each other whilst at the same time destroying each other’s dreams?

There are many subplots interwoven into this brilliantly crafted novel. There is a theme of one person’s dreams being another’s nightmare throughout the story for many of the characters. Gram’s plans upset her grand daughters, Rachel’s is in danger of destroying her marriage to Jeff whilst those of Charile and Emily are so divergent they’re likely to stop any potential romance for them. All the characters are complex with believable flaws that make them human and easy to empathise with.

The author has the reader giggling at some of the antics, tearful at others, hanging on and page turning in the desperate hope of a happy resolution for the characters you’ve grown to know and love through the story. The ending is absolutely fantastic, I loved this book and will definitely be remembering and revisiting it in future. Jenny Hale is a supremely accomplished and highly talented author, I can’t wait to read more from her in future!

Emily Tate has returned to Oyster Bay, her childhood home after three years of city living as well as turning down her boyfriend's proposal. She realizes that she is a small town girl and wants to live where she grew up. She is back at home with her gran in the house her papa built, where she grew up after the tragic accident that killed both her parents. She has been hired by her friend as the events manager at the Water’s Edge Inn, Charles Peterson has recently purchased the Inn and has plans for a big expansion. He wants her to help him convince the planning board to allow the expansion. He also wants to get to know more about the community, the food, the customs and the people and he thinks Emily is just the person to do that. When Emily realized that his expansion plans include Oyster Bay, which would mean leveling her family home, she sets her sights on convincing him to leave her family home and property as is. The fact that he grew up a rich boy and his whole life was geared to making money, they could not be more different. Will she be able to convince him? Where will the feelings she has to Charles (Charlie) lead? Not only is she fighting to save Oyster Bay but she is dealing with her gran's declining health and her sister and her brother-in-law a bit on the outs due to her wanting to go back to work. Should one person's dreams be put on hold because someone else wants something different for them?

I love the characters in this book. They are fun, loving and very realistic. I wanted to join them on their family activities. When things looked down, I found myself hoping that Emily could figure out a way to solve the problem. It kept me reading to the end without wanting to stop. I loved the ending. It was amazing and has me wanting to read more from Jenny Hale. This was a great summer read and I recommend it to others who enjoy romance, family drama or just a smalltown story. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

All about family and it was a fast read. One I would love to have lived in the pages of for longer. The closeness of the family was so refreshing. I fell in love with Charlie he's a real dream come try kind of guy. Of course his a figment of my imagination no man is that great in real life. If you love family books this one is for you. It was such a great read. I hope you love my book boyfriend Charlie as much as I did!

I love how heart-warming this book is! Right from the start, I was pulled into the world of Emily who had just got back to her hometown to start a new job and when I met Charlie, I was smitten. Adding Gram to the mix, I fell in love whole-heartedly in the world that Jenny Hale had created.

All the characters were very delightful to know and I just love how they progressed throughout the story. I especially have a soft spot for Charlie because he started out as a typical bachelor businessman who is serious and have no other room in his life except for work, but thanks to Emily and her family, he slowly relaxed and began to look at the other aspect of life. It's somehow cliche, but I just love that progression, especially towards the end.

I also love how the theme of living your life in the moment is very prominent throughout the book as that is a great message to get across. In the book we were shown how Emily was so adamant on not giving away the family land to the inn expansion because of the many memories that they created there, but when Gram said that live is for living, that really struck a chord with me and I really love Gram for that. Some of the memories that Emily have had with her Papa was also too beautiful not to mention and I have to admit that there was a part that I got a bit teary-eyed.

This book is written beautifully and the pace is good, not too fast but not too slow either, just enough to make me feel interested to know what is coming next. It's quite an easy read as I read it in just over a day. One of the things that I love about the writing is the description of the places that are just enough to make me imagine and feel as if I am right there together with Emily and Charlie.

I would definitely recommend this to those who would love a sweet, heart-warming summer romance story that is easy to read.

Summer at Oyster Bay is a cosy summer read which makes you feel immediately at home with the seaside town and its characters.

The storyline is straightforward and there is maybe not too much happening but I enjoyed its cosy atmosphere and how Emily settled back and struggled with life changes at Oyster Bay.
The book has a set of wonderful characters and I really liked Emily and her family, especially Grams.

The atmosphere made me feel at home and I liked how the story was built about Emily's memories. The love story felt a bit distant at times but overall I liked Charlie and what he did for Emily.

Again I enjoyed the author's writing style and I am looking forward to read for from her.

I'm about to rant so prepare yourself!

​Two things:
1. Why in the world do so many romance books have orphans as the main characters? I'm so sick of it. Can't authors come up with something other than abandonment issues due to dead parents? Ugh, just stop!
2. Why do women feel that their plans or visions of the future are the ones that a couple should agree on? Why can't there be a compromise? I never want my husband to feel that his dreams or desires are any less important than mine. Because I love him so much, I want all his dreams to come true. IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT ME!!! Is it any wonder the divorce rate is what it is when we show women through books like this that they should shut him out and he will concede to whatever we want? Get a freaking life and grow the heck up! Be a wife or let him find someone willing to be a wife and not a manipulative dictator! Both the women in this story drove me crazy with how selfish they were! I felt so bad for the men.

The Good: I'm sure there was some but I hated the character's selfishness so much that I couldn't see past that.

After three years away, Emily comes back to her childhood home, where are living her Gram and Sister with her family. She starts to work at a Water's Edge Inn, where she meets the new owner Charlie. He wants to expand the Inn and wants Emily to show him the best of the Oyster Bay and convince the commission that it is a good idea. Emily and Charlie enjoy each other's company and Emily feels herself happy again, until it comes out that the expansion would destroy her childhood home. The house and the beach are very important to her, because they hold so many fond memories, especially about Pop, who passed away not long ago. Emily is torn between being heartbroken because of his plans and still having feelings for him. How are Emily and Charlie going to solve the big obstacle to their love?

I have to say I liked the setting in Oyster Bay, and also the strong family connection between the characters and to the house filled with memories. It was such a heartwarming story, one of my favorite moments was when Gram told how she met the love of her life-Emily's grandfather. Their love played such an important role in the story. It's a terrific book-a sweet summery romance.

This beautiful book transports you straight into the summer. You relax into its pages dreaming of the suns rays beating down whilst you relax on a beach on the water’s edge, the sound of the waves in your ears. See, I’m still there!
It’s set in Oyster Bay in the Chesapeake area. I’ve read several books set in Chesapeake and it makes me want to hop on a plane and explore- it sounds blissful. I also adore small town American settings- so this book had everything for me.
Jenny’s books always have a strong sense of family and wonderfully drawn characters. You get to know them quickly and warm to them, forgiving any questionable actions.
Emily returns to her childhood home after turning down a wedding proposal. She starts a new job where she discovers that the home she loves so much is under threat from developers. She needs to get her boss to fall in love with the town – so that he wants it to remain the way it is. Will he learn to see it through her eyes whilst they spend time together?
Another book that I was sad to come to the end.

Anche l’amore, in questa ridente cittadina, ha i suoi tempi, che sono lenti e si protraggono quasi all’infinito.
La protagonista è Emily Tate, giovane ragazza delusa dalla fine della sua ultima storia d’amore. Dopo aver ricevuto la fatidica proposta di matrimonio dal suo uomo, ha capito che non era quello che voleva, che non era davvero felice. Gli ha rifilato un no ed è scappata dalla città rifugiandosi nel suo porto sicuro, il luogo dove è nata a cresciuta: Oyster Bay. Ad aspettarla la nonna, a cui è legatissima, e sua sorella, oltre che un nuovo lavoro. Una sua cara amica le darà la possibilità di lavorare nell’albergo di lusso di Oyster Bay, il Water’s Edge Inn. Attraverso i ricordi racchiusi in ogni stanza e in ogni angolo di quella casa, Emily sente ancora i suoi genitori e il suo nonno accanto a lei. La loro mancanza si affievolisce ogni volta che è in quella casa e che insieme alla nonna ricorda la sua infanzia.
Il progetto di Charles però prevede che la nonna venda la casa e che il terreno venga usato per espandere l’albergo. Anche Emily, dunque, vedrà in Charles il newyorchese con grandi mire che vuole snaturare Oyster Bay.
La bellezza e lo charme di Charles avvicineranno Emily, rappresenteranno una grossa tentazione a cui farà fatica a dire di no, ma i suoi progetti riapriranno le vecchie ferite e le insicurezze della ragazza.
L’intero romanzo ha come protagonista Emily e la sua storia. Tutto gira intorno a lei e al suo passato, alle sue perdite importanti, al suo presente che sembra stia naufragando. Nel momento in cui si è resa conto di non essere davvero felice ha tirato fuori il coraggio e ha rifiutato il matrimonio con l’uomo che credeva di amare. Questo l’ha destabilizzata, stravolgendo la sua vita e ciò che aveva progettato per il futuro.
L’aver perso il nonno l’ha segnata tanto; attraverso i suoi ricordi sono riuscita a emozionarmi come non succedeva da tempo. Ho ripensato anch’io alle persone che ho perso, riuscendo a immedesimarmi negli stati d’animo di Emily tanto da giustificare anche le sue reazioni più strambe. In alcuni momenti mi è sembrata una ragazza immatura per la sua età, ma per la gran parte del tempo l’ho adorata. La sua fragilità mi ha fatto avvicinare a lei, riuscendo a comprenderla e capirla, fino a schierarmi dalla sua parte. Charles è un personaggio che resterà in ombra, che il lettore non riesce a inquadrare. Di lui si sa veramente poco, l’autrice non dà spazio alla sua caratterizzazione né alla storia con Emily. L’unica pecca di questo romanzo, infatti, a mio avviso, è stata la scelta di mettere la storia d’amore in secondo piano rispetto alla storia personale di Emily.
È vero, tutto parte da Emily. Se non fosse stato per il suo momento di dolore, non avrebbe mai conosciuto Charles né lavorato al suo fianco. Ma è anche vero che l’amore, e solo l’amore, riuscirà ad aprire i suoi occhi e riportarla in vita lasciando andare il passato. Grazie all’amore Emily crescerà, abbandonerà le insicurezze, i dubbi, le paure. Diventerà una donna nuova. La sua crescita è meravigliosa, mi è sembrato di vederla sbocciare, vestita di nuovi colori e nuova luce. La ragazza fragile, timorosa di fare anche solo un passo, è diventata d’improvviso una donna forte, capace di accettare ciò che la vita ha in serbo per lei, il dolore come le gioie.
Ammetto che dopo la prima metà mi aspettavo maggiore interazione tra i protagonisti. Sono stata fino alle ultime pagine a sperare in un contatto che non c’è stato, in una dichiarazione che arrivasse al momento giusto e non così tardi. Avrei voluto che Jenny Hale sottolineasse quanto l’arrivo di Charles abbia influito sulla vita di Emily. Ci sono stati momenti in cui lui è sembrato proprio il newyorchese interessato solo ai soldi e al successo delle prime pagine. I suoi sentimenti per Emily sono arrivati troppo tardi. Estate a Oyster Bay è la storia di una ragazza che diventa donna, di una combattente che scopre solo a un certo punto della sua vita, grazie all’amore, quanto sia forte e quante battaglie sia in grado di vincere. È una storia fatta di ricordi meravigliosi che straziano il cuore tanto quanto fanno bene all’anima, di sentimenti ed emozioni che forse sono andati un po’ persi. È un romanzo che invita, inconsapevolmente, a ricordare la bellezza unica delle cose semplici come un porticciolo con barche a vela, lo sciabordio perenne delle onde, i colori e gli odori della natura. Il tempo si ferma, il mondo smette di girare freneticamente. Sembra di tornare indietro di anni, a quando eravamo bambini, a quando passavamo le giornate con i nonni, in estate, a quando bastava davvero poco per farci sorridere e per sentire il cuore pieno di gioia.
Questo libro mi ha fatto sorridere tanto quanto mi ha fatto sentire malinconica. Mi ha fatto pensare a quanto mi piacerebbe poter tornare indietro nel tempo e rivivere anche solo uno dei momenti belli passati con chi non c’è più. Che dirvi… il mio animo romantico stavolta si è fatto da parte - perché per leggere di un bacio o di un contatto più intimo tra i protagonisti ho dovuto aspettare gli ultimissimi capitoli - ma ne è valsa comunque la pena.

Summer at Oyster Bay by Jenny Hale is a great summer read about family, love and holding on to the past and the future. The story centers around Emily and Charles in a lovely location on the Chesapeake Bay area. I loved Emily’s quest to help Charles learn about the area and the laid back atmosphere of this corner of the US. I loved the story between Charles and Emily and how they were with each other. What I didn’t love was Emily’s attitude that bordered on unreasonableness at times. The attitude of I want this and this is all I will take was a little much to take. However, as much as I did not like that - the solution was brilliant and lovely.

A nice, sweet summer read especially when sitting with your toes in the sand.

@bookouture another #winner, Thank You & @jhaleauthor & @NetGalley for allowing me to review this book that at first reading of the title reminded me of my days watching " Home and Away" but thankfully Donald didn't show up!!

This was a loveable romantic book with a hint of humour but enough sand to get into ones flip flops. The characters were loveable and I felt I got to know them well.
This really was a wonderful "pick me up, don't put me down" book.

This is such a great book to read in the summer. I loved the family and knowing what was coming to them made me cry - literally. The primary characters, Emily and Charlie, were absolutely perfect and the story was perfect for my mood. The setting was the Chesapeake Bay area and the author described it so that I could see it in my mind.

In realtà è più un 2 stelle e mezzo, perché la prima metà del libro mi è piaciuta molto. L'incontro tra i protagonisti, la bellezza dell'ambientazione, i personaggi secondari, tutto molto carino... peccato che poi lei diventi una pazza furiosa! Ok che sei affezionata a dove sei cresciuta ma appunto cresci! Personalmente l'avrei presa a sberle e avrei preso a sberle anche la nonna

Ma insomma benedetta vecchietta vendi la casa, la proprietà, tutto quello che hai, perché da sola non ce la fai e non dici niente alle tue nipoti? No no ma complimenti😒 poi però sei contenta di restare una volta che te l'hanno ristrutturata gratis è? Grrrr
Ecco quello che proprio non ho sopportato, la fine, Charlie che gli ristruttura tutta la proprietà per dimostrare il suo amore... ma dai! Dopo come si è comportata Emily non si meritava niente secondo me. È solo una piagnucolona con mille sensi di colpa, sensi di colpa giusto perché comunque per tre anni se ne è fregata e ora si dispiace per essere stata lontana, non lo farà più e chi ci rimette è lui? No no no 👎🏻 Non si merita uno come Charlie che è fin troppo buono.

Having read a couple of Jenny's books previously and loved them, I had a pretty good feelingthat I was in for a treat with this book of hers. I certainly wasn't wrong,  Summer at Oyster Bay is a truly lovely story about family, love and new beginnings.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of the characters and seeing how their own individual stories developed throughout.

I especially loved the beach scenes, where time was spent with friends and family and playing in the sea, it made me just want to be there with them too, experiencing it all and creating memories.

I absolutely loved the last chapter and the epilogue, seeing how everything ended for each of the characters and what became of Oyster Bay. Just perfect.

Immaginate un cottege dal quale con un breve percorso in mezzo alla radura è possibile raggiungere una spiaggia di sabbia finissima in cui immergere i piedi. La brezza marina, la tranquillità del rumore delle onde, paesaggi romantici e accoglienti, cene sul patio e giochi all’aperto, girare scalzi ovunque perché tutto urla libertà e bellezza: questa è Oyster Bay.

«Come fai a non amare questo posto?» gli chiese. «Ma io lo amo». Emily sentì la speranza farsi strade nel suo cuore. «E allora come mai vuoi distruggerlo?»

Emily è una donna indipendente, efficiente e capace nel suo lavoro di organizzatrice di eventi, ha sofferto molto in passato per la perdita di alcuni membri importanti della sua famiglia, ma ha ricevuto e donato talmente tanto amore nel luogo in cui è cresciuta da essere legata a doppio filo a Oyster Bay. Nonostante se ne sia allontanata per un breve periodo, Emily ha sempre saputo che la sua casa d’infanzia l’avrebbe accolta in ogni momento, che sarebbe stata la casa in cui avrebbe vissuto la sua vita, assieme all’adorata nonna che le ha fatto da madre, alla sorella e la sua famiglia e agli amici. Oyster Bay è il suo passato, contiene ogni suo ricordo, ogni oggetto, angolo e luogo della casa e della baia che la circonda evoca un momento speciale per Emily, si sente al sicuro, accolta e amata e sa di aver fatto la scelta giusta a ritornare avendo il coraggio di non scendere a compromessi e non accettare nulla di meno che raggiungere la felicità. Emily è una donna pratica per molti aspetti, ma è anche molto romantica, desidera una famiglia e sogna di poter invecchiare accanto all’uomo che ama crescendo i loro bambini a Oyster Bay.

Charles è un uomo d’affari che viene dalla città, abituato a ottenere sempre ciò che vuole, ai ritmi serrati. Sin da piccolo è stato cresciuto nella convinzione che ottenere dei risultati fosse la cosa più importante, non ha mai vissuto in un luogo che lo facesse sentire accolto o costruito rapporti di affetto tali da potersi sentire parte di qualcuno. Acquistare l’albergo dove è stata assunta Emily come organizzatrice è stato per lui un altro dei suoi affari e ora il suo unico scopo sembra essere aumentare i profitti non tenendo conto delle tradizioni e del legame che quei luoghi hanno con chi li abita. Charles ha molta personalità, d'impatto incute timore, ma nella vita privata è attento a ogni particolare, protettivo, affettuoso, curioso e simpatico.
Per la prima volta dopo tanto tempo sentì di essere di fronte a qualcuno che la stimolava, che le faceva venire voglia di essere una persona migliore, ed era proprio la persona che la stava facendo soffrire.
Emily e Charles sono diversi, ma forse entrambi cercano la stessa cosa dalla vita e questo potrebbe avvicinarli. Ma come far cambiare punto di vista a un uomo che non sa cosa significhi avere una vera famiglia e degli amici? E poi, è così sbagliato voler cambiare qualcosa? I ricordi non sono forse nella mente e nel cuore al di là dei luoghi in cui sono stati vissuti?

Il legame tra i due protagonisti si fa sempre più stretto, confidenze, giornate passate all’aria aperta in compagnia della famiglia di Emily o visitando i luoghi più caratteristici dell’isola avvicinano Emily e Charles che, se da un lato sentono stia nascendo qualcosa di forte, dall’altro sono frenati dai loro rispettivi obiettivi. Cosa vincerà tra affari e cuore?

Come avevo già constatato leggendo un altro romanzo della Hale, Il regalo più grande, le storie che ci racconta parlano di amore in maniera romantica, accogliente e parlano di famiglia. Se il romanzo che avevo letto era calato nell’atmosfera natalizia, questa volta l’autrice si trasferisce in una località di mare e grazie alla sua capacità di descrivere i luoghi minuziosamente senza essere invadente al lettore ne viene trasmesso tutto il fascino, sembra quasi di sentire quella brezza di mare, gli odori e i sapori tipici, seduti su una sedia sotto a un patio accoccolati, con davanti lo spettacolo della natura e dell’acqua. So, if you have been a reader of my blog/my reviews for a while, you know how much I love Jenny Hale’s books and yes, she did it again!

Summer at Oyster Bay follows the story of Emily Tate who finds herself back at Oyster Bay after saying no to her ex-boyfriend’s proposal. Oyster Bay contains a lot of memories for her, because it’s her childhood home. It reminds her of her grandfather and brings her back to her gram and her sister Rachel.

All this tells us more about her past and what was important in her childhood. Emily’s gran plays an important part in the novel, which was great. Also her sister Rachel got her part of the story and it was adorable to see Rachel with her daughter Clara and her husband Jeff. They went through quite something in this book actually. I felt really close to all the characters, they seemed very real and authentic. I loved how they were all connected and I think Jenny did a great job including them all in the story, with their unique personalities.

Emily starts work at Water’s Edge Inn and soon meets handsome owner Charles Peterson. He wants to expand the inn and seeks Emily’s help to show her the area and convince the right people. She wants him to see the place from another point of view and appreciate what the area has to offer. Her dreams are crushed when she hears that Oyster Bay is part of the expansion, meaning it’s all going to change. Her childhood would be gone…

It doesn’t make it easier that on the other side she really likes Charlie and actually enjoys her time with him. I have to say that they had deep chemistry from the start, I was really routing for them, but then got annoyed with Charlie’s plans. It’s hard when you really like a character, but there is one thing that gives it all a dark spot. I think that’s the way Emily felt as well.

This story is full of wonderful moments and scenes, especially between Charlie and Emily, but also within the family and they way Charlie was with her family. Jenny’s writing is on point. She catches the scenes from a beautiful angle, makes you feel like you’re there with the characters and lets you vanish into that world. She describes everything in a vivid, realistic, bright and sweet way. The story combines family, love, passion, romance and a wonderful setting and it also shows the difficult sides of all these aspects.

I got hooked from the first page and in the end I was really sad when I had to say goodbye to the characters, the story and Oyster Bay. Please take me there right now!!!

The way the story developed was great, the storyline flows beautifully. So I just have one word to sum it all up: AMAZING!!!

I loved this story! It was funny, emotional and heart-warming.
The main character, Emily Tate, is sweet and loyal, and I warmed to her immediately. She’s had some ups and downs recently but she always has good intentions. When Emily returns to Oyster Bay, she realises what she’s been missing, and I joined her on a rollercoaster of emotions as she is reunited with her precious Gram and extended family, as well as the ghosts of her past.
Then there’s Charles… the handsome new owner of the Water’s Edge Inn, and he brings a whole load of delightful complications into Emily’s life. He’s a serious businessman but also gorgeous and kind, and I enjoyed the journey as Emily brings out the best in him, and they realise that they have more than an appreciation of Oyster Bay in common.
Summer at Oyster Bay is a feel-good romance that captivates the senses and Jenny Hale is an author with a gift for seamlessly immersing the reader in the story and making them fall in love with her characters.
This is a 5* read, for sure!

What a lovely, warm, romantic story! I always seem to enjoy books set in Chesapeake Bay and this was no exception.

I've read a couple of books recently where the main characters are on opposite sides of the fence but fall for each other despite their opposing views. They are good fun as you never know how it will end - will one give way or will they go their separate ways?

The characters in the book are well drawn and contribute well to the story. And the dog is great!

They only slight niggle I had was Emily's obsession with the house and land. She had happily lived elsewhere for some time, ignoring her Gram, the house, the horse, etc, and suddenly wanting to defend it all to the death seemed a tad hypocritical. She should have let go a long time ago.

But overall it was an enjoyable read :)

I loved this story!
I started to read Summer at Oyster Bay during a stormy night and the beautiful writing and the compelling plot almost made me lose my sleep.

I've just moved out of old house where I lived the days of my youth with my late grandparents and this story hit really close to home.

I loved Emily,her character was so realistic and relatable at some point I believed I was reading my own story...unfortunately I'm still looking for my Charlie.
All the characters are amazing and page after page you hope they can all have their happy ending.

Sweet, amusing, and engaging!

This is a classic contemporary romance story. It has friendship, heartbreak, grief, family, food, and romance.

The characters are lovable, dependable, and real. The plot is captivating and interesting. The prose is well done and exceptionally descriptive. And the setting, is the beautiful East Coast, complete with melt-in-your-mouth seafood, campfires, and endless summer days.

I really enjoyed this book. It was like being wrapped up in a cozy blanket, warm and comfortable.

Siete già state in vacanze? O partite a breve? Io purtroppo, come ogni anno, devo aspettare il mese di Settembre per rilassarmi in riva al mare, e proprio per questo non mi faccio mancare letture estive.
Questa volta a catturare la mia attenzione è stato il romanzo di Jenny Hale: "Estate a Oyster Bay", da poco uscito in casa LeggereEditore.

Emily é una donna forte e decisa, sa sempre quello che vuole, e infatti quando il suo fidanzato Brad le chiede di sposarla lei sa che il suo cuore ha fatto la sua scelta tempo fa, e così prepara le valigie in fretta e furia e se ne ritorna nell'unico posto in cui si sente al sicuro. Nonostante la vita in città le piaccia molto, non è lì che lei immagina il suo futuro, ma nella stessa identica casa dove ha trascorso il suo passato. Lei si immagina lì, a Oyster Bay, a passare le sue giornate in riva al mare, magari sulla sedia del nonno a guardare i suoi nipoti giocare. Infatti Emily in apparenza sembra una donna indipendente, ma è attaccata alle sue radici più del dovuto. Niente e nessuno può toglierle casa sua, nessuno può portarla via dall'unico luogo in cui si sente al sicuro. Così, anche se molte di noi avrebbero preferito

l'indipendenza, Emily decide di passarlo a Oyster Bay, assieme a sua nonna, nella stessa casa dove ha vissuto da bambina.
Emily infatti, per anni è stata solo "la ragazza di Brad", e adesso che la sua storia si è conclusa è pronta a rimettersi in gioco. Non è pronta di certo a parlare di come era infelice con lui, o di come non lo amasse abbastanza, ma sicuramente è pronta a tornare a casa, a tornare da sua nonna, e dai suoi ricordi. A tornare nell'unico luogo in cui è mai stata felice.



"Farti felice era la mia unica priorità."

Charles Peterson ha appena acquistato il Water's Edge Inn, l'hotel di lusso dove ha iniziato a lavorare Emily al suo ritorno in paese. Charles in apparenza è tutto l'opposto di Emily: lui ama la città, i suoi ritmi e i suoi successi. Nessuno dice no a Charles. Almeno nessuno prima di Emily.
Tra i due nasce subito un rapporto intenso, fatto di giornate assieme, confidenze e sguardi. Nonostante le loro divergenze i due sembrano in totale sintonia, ed Emily è più che orgogliosa di portare Charles in giro per il paese, per fargli conoscere e amare il luogo in cui lei si sente a casa. Emily, però non aveva calcolato che con la stessa velocità in cui lui inizia ad amare Clearwater, noi, e sopratutto lei, iniziamo ad innamorarci di lui, e lo stesso vale per Charles. Charlie infatti non ha mai avuto una famiglia unita a chiacchierare e scherzare davanti a un gioco da tavola, non ha mai avuto giornate da passare solo con la famiglia, così quando Emily gli insegna che l'affetto non è solo per i nostri cari, ma anche per i luoghi in cui vivono anche se non ci sono più, Charlie inizia a vivere per la prima volta in vita sua.
Un unico dettaglio però rovina tutto, e quando Emily scopre cosa è venuto davvero a fare Charles a Oyster Bay, sarà ancora così felice della sua compagnia? O deciderà di combattere per la sua terra? Per la sua casa?
L'unica cosa che le resta da fare, per realizzare i suoi sogni di un futuro a Oyster Bay, è far cambiare idea all'uomo che stava per rapire il suo cuore, ma le restano solo pochi giorni per convincere Charlie a non vendere Oyster Bay, o a scegliere, lei per prima, tra le sue radici o l'amore.

"Mi hai salvato da una vita in cui non avrei mai saputo cosa significa sentirmi come mi sento adesso."

Leggere questa storia è stata come viverla: l'autrice non tralascia nessun dettaglio e mentre leggiamo ci sembrerà di essere lì a Oyster Bay, a respirare il suo clima di pace.
Tutto il racconto infatti gira intorno a questa piccola cittadina di mare, che tutti gli abitanti rendono confortevole.
L'autrice con la sua scrittura dettagliata ci regala diversi momenti di spensieratezza alternati a delusioni, perché non scherzo quando vi dico che questo romanzo non si legge ma si vive. È un romanzo che ti prende totalmente, trasportandoti nell'atmosfera che descrive. E così mentre ero sotto le coperte, mi immaginavo davvero lì a Oyster Bay, magari a prendere il sole con Emily e Rachel. Il romanzo infatti, oltre a rendere gradevole l'atmosfera in cui si svolge, ci sorprende anche raccontando una bellissima storia fatta di ricordi e di affetti. Rachel, la sorella di Emily, e la loro nonna sono molto di più di due personaggi secondari, e riusciranno facilmente a trascinare anche noi lettori nella loro famiglia, e nei loro ricordi. Nel romanzo infatti troviamo, oltre l'amore e l'affetto che lega Emily alla sua famiglia e a Charles, anche dei piccoli e dettagliati scorci della vita degli altri personaggi. Rachel e suo marito ne sono l'esempio, ma anche la nonna e i suoi segreti saranno una scoperta piacevole.

"Alla famiglia. E alla vita. È un magnifico viaggio, al di là di dove ci porta. Salute!"

Se non avete avuto ancora l'opportunità di andare al mare, vi consiglio dunque di tuffarvi nelle acque blu di Oyster Bay dove l'amore regna sovrano e i compromessi lo rendono ancora più forte.
Ma d'altronde cosa non si farebbe per amore?

La Hale ci regala dunque una lettura intensa e ben strutturata, dove i dettagli non mancano mai, eppure non ne si è mai sazi. Il romanzo infatti scorre velocissimo, lasciandosi dietro una scia dolce e romantica che entra anche nei cuori più duri. Sfido chiunque a non innamorarsi di questo posto, così come sfido chiunque a non voler combattere per salvarlo. L'amore richiede sacrificio e compromesso, saranno disposti i due protagonisti a trovare un accordo per salvare il posto che entrambi amano immensamente?

A very sweet, nostalgic read that has all the ingredients of a great romance. The setting of Oyster Bay provides perfect escapism with all the warmth, charm and kickback style of the great American outdoors. I enjoyed this easy read and felt charmed by the likeability of the characters and truly felt drawn by the dilemmas of past memories and future happiness that the characters face. If you like beautifully set, upbeat, life affirming romances this book will certainly put a smile on your face.

Yeahhhhh another good book from Jenny Hale! It's now the 4th book I am reading from her, and every time I really enjoy my time trough the pages... Her stories are always so lovely and this particular book is no exception. The characters are lovely, the settings by the sea is lovely. The only thing I regret about this book is that the plot is a little bit too alike from Jenny Hale's previous summer book... That's a bit of a pity I think. I hope her next summer book will be a bit different otherwise I might get bored! But other than that, I really loved this read and recommend it to everyone!

Avevo voglia di una storia che chiamasse a gran voce il sole, il mare, il caldo ed è esattamente ciò che ho trovato in questo libro, tutto ruota intorno a Oyster Bay, la baia delle ostriche, che rischia di essere spazzata via per sempre per colpa di un progetto di espansione dell’hotel della zona che non terrebbe conto né dei ritmi né dei ricordi di chi vi abita ma solo degli introiti che questa potrebbe portare. La domanda che mi sono posta spesso durante la lettura è stata: quanto contano i nostri ricordi di un luogo e quanto questo deve rimanere immutato per riuscire a conservarli intatti dentro di noi? Non sono una persona particolarmente sentimentale e la casa è per me solo il luogo in cui vivo non ha una importanza fondamentale, certo amo casa mia, ci sono nata e sono trent’anni che la sento mia ma sono le persone e i ricordi che la rendono speciale non il luogo in sé. L’attaccamento di Emily per la casa della sua infanzia, dove è stata cresciuta con sua sorella Rachel dai nonni dopo la morte dei genitori in un incidente, non è stato per me semplice da comprendere. Ci sono stati dei momenti in cui l’ho ritenuta infantile ma credo che tutto dipenda dalla mia differente percezione della situazione, conosco gente che si affeziona in modo speciale agli oggetti che possiede e per loro sarebbe stata immediata la connessione con Emily.

L’autrice Jenny Hale che già avevo molto apprezzato nei suoi precedenti romanzi, Il regalo più grande e Amami per come sono, ha la grandissima capacità di farti immergere totalmente nelle atmosfere che crea, così mi sono trovata a respirare l’aria pregna di salsedine e sentire la sabbia sotto i piedi come accade alla nostra protagonista quando passeggia per la baia, mi è sembrato di sentire il rumore delle onde e lo sciabordio dell’acqua e di provare un affetto immediato per tutti i luoghi che descrive con così tanto affetto e dovizia di particolari.

Impossibile non innamorarsi di un posto così, in cui la pace regna sovrana e i ricordi sono tanto dolci.

La storia ruota attorno a Emily, sono suoi i pensieri e le azioni descritte ma saranno in molti a intervenire durante la narrazione perché Estate a Oyster Bay è un romanzo in cui gli altri interpreti aiutano a dare un senso al tutto. Prima menzione alla nonna che sembra nascondere un segreto nel suo passato che potrebbe minare la fiducia di Emily nei suoi confronti, seconda all’amata sorella Rachel, in crisi col marito Jeff che vorrebbe vederla sempre a casa con la figlia Clara e magari allargare pure la famiglia mentre lei vorrebbe tornare a lavorare, terza, ma non perché meno importante, il proprietario dell’hotel in espansione in cui lavora Emily come organizzatrice di eventi, Charles Peterson, a cui Emily cercherà di far vedere attraverso i propri occhi perché Oyster Bay debba essere preservata, e ultime menzioni, ma non potevo non inserirli, i due animali di Emily, il vecchio cavallo Eli che non ha conosciuto altro luogo in cui vivere e il trovatello Flash di cui si innamorerà al primo sguardo.

Ci sarà tempo per tutto in Estate a Oyster Bay, anche quello per innamorarsi ma come si può stare con una persona che non comprende il tuo punto di vista e vive in modo così diverso da te? Gli ostacoli da superare saranno molti ed Emily faticherà non poco a fidarsi di chi la circonda, riuscirà ad accantonare il suo amore per un luogo e a smetterla di vivere nei ricordi per abbandonarsi all’amore e ricominciare a vivere davvero? Per scoprirlo dovete fare solo una cosa, passare un’Estate a Oyster Bay, certa che non ve ne pentirete.

Dopo tre anni di lontananza, Emily Tate torna a Oyster Bay dove sorge la casa dei nonni nella quale ha trascorso l’infanzia assieme alla sorella Rachel. La sua capacità di organizzare eventi la porta a lavorare presso il Water’s Edge Inn, recentemente acquistato da Charles Peterson, un uomo affascinante e ambizioso che desidera estendere l’albergo usufruendo del territorio circostante. Emily non può accettarlo e, armatasi di pazienza, prova a far innamorare l’uomo delle bellezze della cittadina. Una missione davvero ardua ma Emily non ha alcuna intenzione di arrendersi.

“Per la prima volta dopo tanto tempo sentì di essere di fronte a qualcuno che la stimolava, che le faceva venire voglia di essere una persona migliore, ed era proprio la persona che la stava facendo soffrire.”

Sono due i temi portanti del romanzo: il ruolo della famiglia e il peso dei ricordi. Tornare nel luogo in cui si è vissuto per anni provoca sempre una grande emozione, a maggior ragione se lì si è vissuta l’infanzia.

Emily, che si ritrova ad attraversare una fase delicata della sua vita, sa che nella tranquillità di Oyster Bay può ritrovare se stessa. Lì, tra la spiaggia bianchissima e le parete segnate dal tempo, prova a trovare un nuovo equilibrio e a godersi la famiglia dalla quale è stata lontana per troppo tempo. L’incontro con Charles Peterson, un personaggio che almeno in un primo momento incute un senso di timore, uomo di città abituato a cogliere gli utili piuttosto che pensare ai sentimenti, e il successivo venire a conoscere il suo piano rappresentano per lei sia una sfida con se stessa sia una sorta di “dovere” nei confronti di ciò che è stato. Sarà proprio durante questi momenti che emergeranno la determinazione della protagonista e il suo senso di attaccamento agli affetti che quasi stupisce il lettore.

Sicuramente ben descritti sono i luoghi, dove elementi esterni e interni si intersecano a delineare un’ambientazione estiva, amena e tranquilla.

Dal punto di vista stilistico il romanzo, pur presentando una prosa semplice, non risulta di agevole lettura a causa della presenza (soprattutto nella parte centrale) di frasi brevi con numerosi punti fermi che interrompono la narrazione. Dalla seconda metà, invece, complice anche il ritmo più veloce, la prosa risulta più scorrevole e fluida e il lettore riesce a sentirsi maggiormente coinvolto dalle vicende.

Un romanzo nel complesso piacevole che fa venire voglia di preparare la valigia e trascorrere alcuni giorni di relax in un luogo incontaminato qual è, appunto, Oyster Bay.

Oyster Bay è una località dove il tempo trascorre molto lentamente, dove la gente non è coinvolta nei meccanismi frenetici delle grandi metropoli. E' uno di quei luoghi dove ci si gode della tranquillità del mare, delle delizie culinarie, è il luogo dove Emily è cresciuta e dove ora vuole ristabilirsi.
Affezionata soprattutto ai ricordi, al passato, Emily torna con un bagaglio anche professionale notevole e quando le viene offerto di lavorare in uno degli alberghi storici del posto accetta, convinta soprattutto di riuscire a far amare il posto al proprietario che vorrebbe espandersi per creare nuove opportunità turistiche al posto.
Far innamorare Charles Peterson non sarà semplice, viste le idee di espansioni che ha, ma Emily ci proverà non mettendo in conto però che Charles è anche un bell'uomo, affascinante, sempre molto curato, attento, e così il trascorrere del tempo insieme li avvicina sempre più.
Purtroppo il problema c'è e anche se entrambi nutrono dei forti sentimenti l'uno verso l'altra, Emily è troppo legata ai ricordi che la casa dei nonni le ha lasciato, e scoprire che la stessa nonna ha deciso di guardare avanti e vendere tutto, le lascia l'amaro in bocca.
In questo romanzo anche nei modi di descrivere il paesaggio, i personaggi, l'ambiente circostante hanno assunto una dimensione di tranquillità, un tempo cadenzato dalle abitudini, dagli scorci della baia, e ti ritrovi a leggerlo molto lentamente, come se ti sentissi risucchiato da quella piccola cittadina, che vive dei prodotti locali, ostriche, gamberi... Che si sofferma a guardare il tramonto lungo le spiagge. Anche Emily e Charles rientrano in tutto ciò, e questo mi ha fatto apprezzare molto la lettura, che consiglio, soprattutto a chi cerca un romanzo come amo definire io "delle piccole cose", anche se non è propriamente una mia citazione, ma di un poeta studiato all'università.
