New Story Arc! "END OF GAMES" begins this issue! Inspector Thanoth returns with some startling information. Vader may have passed his master's tests...but will his own schemes prove his undoing? PLUS: A bonus tale of Triple-Zero and Beetee!
I don't think Marvel realizes that they are sitting on a gold mine. The two killer robots are most entertaining characters in this title or in Star Wars title. The triple zero matrix running wild in the empire and murdering people for 3 years. That's fun shit. Blastomech droid doing something similar that's fun. Both of them together is even more fun and mayhem. I feel there is something great there. Just need someone experienced enough with the Star Wars universe to write it.
Finally! Star Wars Darth Vader is back on track with a new arc. After that disappointing Shu-Torun war, we again get the feel that excitement we have felt before. Get ready for lots of conversations and expositions though because this issue is full of it.
Reading this bonus content was an absolute blast!
The breakaway story here is the add-in bonus that shows to us the misadventures of Beetee and Triple Zero. It was funny as hell, in a very dark way. Well you know those two droids.
One of the best issues in a long time for this series despite laying off the action. The dialogue between Vader and Palpatine really tied together the various plots along with their motivations.
It was kind of cool that they included a little bonus comic in the back, even though it's about the two droids that I loathe.
Despite the opening crawl saying that this is Part V of The Shu-Torun War, this is actually the beginning of a new arc titled End of Games. Thanoth has figured out Vader's secrets and reveals that he wants Vader to kill the Emperor and rule the Empire, which weirdly foreshadows how Kylo Ren looks up to Vader and how the First Order admires the Empire but perceives Palpatine as a fool. Thanoth reveals Aphra's location and says that Vader has to kill her, thus spoiling her fate in Rebel Jail. He also reveals that he knows Vader is Anakin, causing Vader to kill him. But it seems like Thanoth saw his fate coming, which is interesting.
There is also a story called "The Misadventures of Triple Zero and Bee-Tee." The title is funny and I feel that these droids fare better in their own adventure than with Vader. Triple Zero gets his arms that he got from C-3PO replaced, and after getting upgrades from Ruen, BT-1 awakens droids who kill him. I'm still trying to figure out when this takes place.

Freaking Vader is awesome. And the test from Palpatine ACTUALLY makes sense, and Vader's attitude towards him in later movies makes sense, and damnation, this comic is amazing.
Vader returns to the emperor for exposition. Vader's adjutant discovers Vader's machinations and confronts him. Plus a bonus adventure with 000 and Beetee!
This is the start of a new arc within the comics, so I'm excited to see where it's going. I almost didn't get this far in the series. Portraying Darth Vader as weaker than we know him from the movies didn't sit right with me (at least I found him weaker in the comics, but that's just me). Having Palpatine's explain, finally, was cool. Sorta.
After bringing a successful and profitable conclusion to the Shu-Torun civil war, Vader’s prestige has risen in the eyes of the Emperor. Now he must find the traitor Cylo and return him to the Emperor, but he also has to deal with the fact that Inspector Thanoth just might be onto his connection to Doctor Aphra.
There are a lot of Machiavellian maneuvers in this issue! The Emperor has been manipulating Vader and other potential apprentices, Vader and Thanoth have been manipulating each other, and Vader continues to manipulate events so Aphra can locate Luke Skywalker. Honestly, this is exactly how I thought things would work in the Empire. Everyone is trying to jockey for position and create advantage for themselves. What a way to run a government, right?
It’s really intriguing to see Vader maneuver these dangerous waters. Gillen’s writing in so smart and on point. He gives Vader a cunning an intelligence that we only glimpsed in the classic trilogy. Even the newly created characters like Thanoth are clever at playing the game. Really intriguing and fun to read stuff.
There’s also a backup story that focuses on the droids Triple Zero and BT-1. Even they work the systems and run cons like seasoned professionals. We get to see a little more detail on their individual back stories here, and this story provides a nice vehicle for providing that. A tense and fun little story with these great characters.
Overall, a really compelling issue supported by fantastic artwork, and an excellent start to this final arc.
#20 - “We did it, Vader. The Jedi destroyed! The Republic a shattered corpse for me to resurrect as a puppet! And you, Vader – the boy transformed into the man you were destined to be...” - Emperor Palpatine “Exactly, Beetee. If people treated droids with more respect, none of this would be necessary. The rudeness is simply intolerable. … Yes, on the bright side, the explosions are very pretty.” - Triple Zero [000].
These Darth Vader comics are some of the very best of Star Wars.
Lord Vader and the Emperor have a annual performance counseling session. Let's just say, Vader is 'Greatly Exceeding above his Peers.'
This is also a double-up, with two issues in one. Part two being the 'Misadventures' (I love this) of Triple-Zero and Beetee. These droids are soo much fun. Absolutely love these horrifying tin-cans.
Excited to start a new arc after the last “ore baron” story... plus, the mini adventure with Triple 0 and Beetee is entertaining and sinister with witty dialogue and oozes subtext. What a treat. Looking forward to continuing through End of Games.
