I’ve been a writer for over 15 years now, but it wasn’t planned!
I had a variety of jobs, including secretary, trainee buyer at Harrods, dental nurse, production assistant in a reprographic and printing company and various others.
I began to write after joining a creative writing class. I had no success with article writing, or short stories, or fiction, but the first children’s story I wrote, for a magazine called Twinkle, was accepted for publication. Hooray!!!
Things snowballed and a lot (yes lots and lots) of hard work later I now write full time and have over 50 books published. I still go to the same writing class and we have become a big happy family of writers!
For me, writing is the best job ever. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I love to create worlds for young children to enjoy and escape into – whether the stories are educational, bedtime, problem solving or just plain good fun. It’s also very exciting to see the first picture roughs, as my wonderful, talented illustrators bring the text to life.
I live on the Essex coast in a lovely two-bed-roomed flat, which I share with my husband, Michael. At long last I have an office to write in, with room for all my books and bits of scribbled on papers.
The seafront is (still) just around the corner, and I find a bracing walk (it gets freezing when the East wind blows from the North Sea!) or gentle stroll when the weather is warmer, is great for clearing my head and mulling over story ideas.
The illustrations were cute but it's a bit disturbing thinking about aliens playing with my underpants and having to check before I put them on to see if there's still one playing with them :X
This is a book about Aliens who love underpants as you would imagine. It is a rhyming story and is a firm favourite with children of all ages. This may be due to the fact that it contains references to underpants which as we all know is the funniest topic for children-and some adults! During SEB my mentor read this and the children's favourite "Aliens in Underpants Save the World" quite a few times as this was the most requested book when there was five minutes to spare before lunch. The illustrations are beautifully done and the children love to see the different types especially 'Granny's spotted bloomers.' The only difficulty with this is when using the visualiser, it is almost impossible to get the whole page in view so I would recommend gathering the children close to you and showing them the pages as you read. There is also a lovely website accompanying this book which has resources for children to use and also an introduction to other books by Freedman and Cort. I would thoroughly recommend this book to EYFS and KS1 as a filler for 5 mins. I will certainly be using mine in September and am hoping to get my hands on "Aliens Love Panta Claus" for the festive season!
I read this book with a year one class who loved it and found it very funny and engaging. I would also use it with FS and year 2 children. The book is a fun story about why aliens come to earth and could be used to base a unit of work around. The book follows a rhyming scheme and allows lots of opportunities for discussion or activities such as describing the aliens adventures to earth.
I found myself laughing out loud to this book. This is a great picture book for children about how aliens don't come down to earth to see us, but come for our underpants. It's a funny story and great for teachers or parents to read to the children, if they want a bit of a giggle. It's packed full of bright, fun and colourful illustrations that bring the book to life and a great story told in rhyme. The aliens drawn are very diverse,of all different colours, shapes, sizes. Some have trunks and some have eyestalks. Overall a funny story to read, great colourful pictures and rhyming is great for giggles.
You'd never guess this was a silly book from the title! The 2yo loved this one, and liked looking for the cat which appeared in almost every picture (and doing what cats do).
Edited later: The second almost-2yo has asked for this - with howls if the request is denied for other reasons - almost every night. Definitely holds up, and not boring for parents to reread constantly!
I can see EYFS and KS1 children finding this book really funny and engaging! I think it is also a good book to start exploring rhyme with children. The illustrations are so bright and bold, so would provide great talking points.
I think I would just read this book to children at the end of the day, instead of basing a unit of work around it. Having said this, children could write a similar story about a different monster coming down from space to explore something human.
I think this story could be used as a starter in PSHE for age appropriate discussions about not touching other children's underpants.
I was able to view this story as a PDF online, so digitally. I spent a large amount of time browsing for books in this genre, fitting for a younger age group, and settled on this one, partially because the title made me chuckle, partially because the title made me say "What the...?" The book did receive a positive review from the Horn Book Guide, so I figured it must have been a decent read. The review said "The book is giddy, silly fun," and I don't think there could be a better description for this book. There is not much of a theme to the book, or relevant/relatable characters. There isn't much of a plot of conflict, but the book is entirely intended to make readers laugh. As I read, I couldn't help but imagine the pure laughter and joy on the faces of kindergarten students as we read aloud about... UNDERPANTS... This alone would make it worth a read for them. I wouldn't suggest it for much higher of a group, but for young, emerging readers, this is a quick, fun laugh.
A Science Fiction book about Aliens and underpants. This is a rhyming story about Aliens coming down to earth to take your underpants. The aliens love underpants but unfortunately, they don't have any in space. It talks about how they come for your underpants instead of meeting you. They use their spaceship radar to find fresh underpants on the clothesline. The aliens enjoy playing in the underpants. They love the different colors, materials, and sizes of the underpants. This is definitely a book that will probably bring some laughter with the children because it is talking about underpants. The book presents some beautiful illustrations for the children to enjoy. I would definitely share this book with Kindergarten and 1st graders. This is a great book filled with rhyming words. This can help the children practice their rhyming. It is also filled with wonderful colors for the children to enjoy. In the classroom, the students use their imagination on what other things they think the aliens do in their underwear. Teachers can definitely expect a lot of humor from the book. Teachers could also connect this book with art and have the children draw their own alien illustrations with underwear and share with their peers.
Aliens Love underpants is a good book to read in EYFS the story is about the fascination that aliens have over underpants. The book is funny and quick and a lovely read. I have read the book on several occasions sometimes to the same children, who don't seem to want to do anything else for an hour! When reading the book there is great rhythm using the iambic pentameter, the children pick up on this and in my opinion when there is a good rhythm within a book children of a young age can start to recite the book and some of the verse and with books they find fun children love to read along. My favourite aspect of the book is that the text allows you the freedom to play with the rhyme and to play with speech. When reading books to young children I feel it is your duty to perform and to excite by using your body and the paper you have in front of you. Aliens Love underpants allows you to bring the book to life when reading the book I choose to act put putting on Grandma's Bloomers which the children love and laugh, I ask them to do the same and in doing so get them to play the action of putting on clothes, which in many areas of London is an essential part of education as they learn from school what to do. As much as the book is fantastic for text, rhyme and rhythm may I add engagement. It also allows for freedom of discussion from the children; open ended questions about the illustrations: what the aliens are doing and why allows them to open their imagination and explore the word "because" a key word in the child's development and understanding of reason and questioning. In all a very fun book and it also allows laughter through the illustrations but most of all the fact that the children hear their teachers use the word underpants!
The first thing that drew me to this book was the vibrant illustrations on the front cover and the interesting title. Any book which has 'Aliens' and 'Underpants' in the title, for me, is a must read! This book provides a hilarious and unique insight into what Aliens actually look for when flying around the universe, and it is not humans. As there are no underpants in space, Aliens fly to earth to find some. They like all different kinds, and enjoy participating in various races and competitions such as how many Aliens can fit in one leg! However, there is one pair of underpants which Aliens love the sight of, which are of course, "Granny's spotted bloomers".
Whilst this book would be perfect for younger children, especially during 'story time', I could not stop laughing when I read it myself. The variety of colours keeps you enticed throughout, and the utter nonsense of the story is Brilliant. It also provides sound advice that before you put your pants on you should always check just in case an alien lurks inside! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ALL TO READ!
An absolutely brilliant book filled with fun packed adventure to enthuse and engage even the adults. I thoroughly enjoy reading this story to my pre school children who gather round me and sit attentively listening to each and every word and giggling like crazy when they hear the aliens turn up in the most unexpected yet colourful underpants. As an adult, I was amused with the vibrant illustrations which captured my attention and the rhyming text which I felt added to the value of the book. The story itself plays a role in helping children to come to terms with familiar words and to the concept of rhyme which is reinforced all throughout the story. I would definetely recommend this story, read it and you'll definitely be laughing your pants off.
I loved this book for its utter silliness and the fact it just made me laugh out loud and it was fun to read. This would be great for EYFS and even KS1 for a humours end of day laughs. The pictures are brilliantly bold and colourful with descriptions of patterns which children could identify. The words are just short little metaphors and simple rhymes. In the classroom children could make their own washing line of underpants made from some of the colours and patterns they have learnt. It could even extend to make their own one line rhymes about their underpants.
We loved this book so much and it's funny whenever we read it! My five year old and I have a private joke concerning underpants-once I used his small underpants to shoo a fly out of the room, and ever since he laughs when he sees me holding his underwear. This story made him laugh a lot, but I was laughing just as loud. After reading this story, he now always checks that there aren't underpants-loving aliens in his underwear drawer :)
Great picture book with a fun and silly concept. I picked this because of the rhythm of he text and the bright vibrant art style. The topic is fun. This helped me begin a conversation about what underpants are without any weird ideas of shame around them.
Some of the rhymes were a bit of a stretch but that only made my kids laugh as I struggled to make it work. So in the end I call this a win. Fun and entertaining read for all.
WHEN ALIENS FLY DOWN TO EARTH THEY DONT COME AND MEET U !!! THEY GUST WANT YOUR UNDER PANTS . THEY LIKE THEM RED OR GREEN OR ORANGE BUT BEST OF ALL THEY LIKE THE SIGHT OF GRANNYS SPOTTED BLOOMERS :D
I am babysitting my nieces tonight and it is the eldest turn to choose the book for their bedtime story and she chosen this one. Aliens Love Underpants is a children's picture book written by Claire Freedman and illustrated by Ben Cort, which explores the relationship between aliens and undergarments.
Freedman's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and poetic. With simple rhymes, the narrative tells the story about the relationship between aliens and underwear in the narrative that is zany, wild, and crazy. Cort's illustrations are equally zany and humorous and depict the narrative extremely well.
The premise of the book is rather straightforward. Aliens come to Earth, not to interact with humanity, but with humanity's undergarments. Apparently, aliens love all sorts of undergarments and uses them an in myriad manner, which made my nieces laugh. It is a good story, but perhaps not one for bedtime.
All in all, Aliens Love Underpants is a wonderfully hilarious story about the relationships between aliens and underwear – it just might explain what happen to mine.
It’s a well-kept secret that Aliens love underpants. With none of their own in space, they are forced to visit earth to try on yours!
Look out around the washing line for these cheeky little creatures, and don’t forget to check your drawers!
Colourfully painted illustrations and rhyming verse make this an entertaining read about the mischievous little aliens responsible for all our missing underwear.
A reception class found this story to be very engaging and entertaining, there were many laughs and giggles throughout. The story itself is also well written.
So freakin' cute, the art is too cute. I also love aliens and I love the silliness of it all. Read this to a class of first graders and they were going buck wild over it.
This science fiction book is creative, fun, and humorous. Not only does this book discuss aliens who make special trips to Earth for underpants, but it also contains different shapes, colors, and sizes of underwear.
This is a very animated and engaging story which involves some aliens and you guessed it some underpants! It’s a fictional story in which the aliens feel that they do not have enough underpants in space and they therefore decide to embark on a mischievous adventure. There adventure takes them back down to Earth to collect some additional pairs of underpants. Perhaps you’ll find some children keeping a closer eye on their outside washing line after reading this text!
I think that it’s a brilliant text which is brought to life through the use of fantastic illustrations to engage both young children and adults. It’s a book which can be used within the classroom for children as young as the Early Year’s Foundation Stage and right into the Key Stage One age phase. It’s a great book to use during story time with a class of children as it really settles them down and keeps them engaged due to its animated nature. The bright and bold illustrations further add to the stories creativity and humor. They additionally help to keep the children engaged throughout a story time activity. I further found that the illustrations allowed open-ended discussion to occur between the children and their peers which I feel is a very important part of children’s learning.
From an educational point of view there is a key element of rhyme used throughout the text. Due to my experience as a trainee teacher within the Early Years Foundation Stage of development rhyme is an important feature within young children literacy development. This element allowed the more able learners to be additionally extended as they demonstrated the ability to join in with some of the rhyming language.
With this in mind, for children in the older stages of key stage one such as those in year two, the story could be used as a literacy core text and their work could be based around the theme of the book. Activities used within this context may include children writing their own stories based around the theme of aliens as inspiration. An additional cross-curricular approach that may be taken on board could incorporate science and literacy. Due to the setting of the story initially being in space, a teacher may incorporate naming of the planets within space as a starter of a lesson to then lead into a literacy story writing activity. Children would be encouraged to focus on the importance of adjectives within their writing to make it as descriptive as possible. I additionally feel that Geography could also be linked into this context as the children could be exploring additional areas outside of their local vicinity.
In addition, I think it’s a great book to be explored within the home environment as well as the classroom. It creates a great amount of enjoyment and lots of laughter for both the children listening to the story and the adult reading it. I feel that it is extremely important for children to enjoy story telling both in an educational setting and within their home environment. When children are exposed to such experiences I feel that it’s a brilliant way for children to be encouraged to read for pleasure.
Within a classroom environment I think it’s a great story that should be included within the book corner. So, if you are looking for a fun, entertaining and mischievous book to read to young children I would strongly recommend Aliens Love Underpants.
