Great series on the cultures of various countries. Manages to be relatively neutral and balanced, despite, for instance, Turkmenistan being kinda Amnesty International's worst nightmare. Beautiful photos, great history -- perfect for smart middle grades readers or history nerds of any age. Or, say, novelists who need quick background on a region, and who love great photos of fascinating places.

These republics that gained their independence from the former Soviet Union are fascinating to me. It is cool to read about a people who go way back yet today are trying to find their place in the modern world. Did you know they make a yogurt from horse's milk that is called kumise? Things like this are bizarre but interesting. I first got my interest for Turkmenistan from the wildlife video series by Nature called "The Russian Bear."

Not very well written but the only thing I could find at the library about Turkmenistan. A few discrepancies noted in the text so I question the accuracy of the rest of the information. However, it was a good overview of a little known country.
