(note: i listed this under fiction-poetry because it is written as a long form poem, not because its fiction, far from it.)

this is a short book and its great. read it. black latin americans are not recognized in the well known 'international' 'latino' literature on race on the continent. there are moments here that made me gasp but none of it was surprising because they are things i have always known and understood. anyway its like 30 pages and you need to read it. the link is below.

eye opening. enlightening. sharp, direct, and cutting poetry that holds nothing back. in a sea of contemporary poetry that's often just a vehicle for the author's vanity, this is poetry that is truly and powerfully about some real shit. as a person who is trying to understand the many complexities of race and nationality, this book gave me some crucial depth and layered insights. simply stated, this shit is must read.

Must-read. Layered investigation of race, ethnicity and nationality and the complex relations between them.

Shelves: borders
this thoughtful chapbook is more an investigation than a theory. trevino looks critically and carefully at race, place, and borders, as situated in the lived experience of the rio grande valley. the piece engages tenderly and unflinchingly with other literature that tries to explain these experiences, encountering others approaches with a careful eye. i was particularly struck with the notion "race is what is done to us; ethnicity is what we do to ourselves", thinking about how peoples do or do ...more

“A border, like race, is a cruel fiction
Maintained by constant policing, violence
Always threatening a new map. It takes
Time, lots of people’s time, to organize
The world this way. & violence. It takes more
Violence. Violence no one can confuse for
Anything but violence. So much violence
Changes relationships, births a people
They can reason with. These people are not
Us. They underestimate the violence.
