About the author

Shel Silverstein was the author-artist of many beloved books of prose and poetry. He was a cartoonist, playwright, poet, performer, recording artist, and Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated songwriter.

Shel Silverstein will perhaps always be best loved for his extraordinary books. Shel’s books are now published in more than 47 different languages. The last book that was published before his death in 1999 was Falling Up

شعر مورد علاقه من " کنترل بابا" که درباره خاموش کردن بابا عه بود وقتی حوصله‌شو نداری، و شعر مورد علاقه شاگردم ( همونکه کتاب رو براش خریده بودم و سرکلاس میخونیمش) " خواب مسخره" است که درباره تنبیه کردن معلمها با تکلیف سخته :)))))
عاشق این کتاب و بقیه کتابهای عمو شلبی ام. واقعا عاشقشونم. خیلی خوش میگذره موقع خوندنشون. تازه می تونید نقاشیهای باحالش رو هم رنگ کنید ( پیشنهادم با مخالفت شاگردم مواجه شد متاسفانه)

THREE STINGS

George got stung by a bee and said,
"I wouldn't have got stung if I'd stayed in bed."
Fred got stung and we heard him roar,
"What am I being punished for?"

"I learned somethin' about bees today."

HELP!

I walked through the wildwood, and what did I see
But a unicorn with his horn stuck in a tree,
Cryin', "Someone please help me before it's too late."
I hollered, "I'll free you." He hollered back, "Wait--
How much will it hurt? How long will it take?
Are you sure that my horn will not scratch, bend, or break?
How hard will you pull? How much must I pay?
Must you do it right now or is Wednesday okay?
Have you done this before? Do you have the right tools?
Have you graduated from horn-savin' school?
Will I owe you a favor? And what will it be?
Do you promise that you will not damage the tree?
Should I close my eyes? Should I sit down or stand?
Do you have insurance? Have you washed your hands?
And after you free me--tell me what then?
Can you guarantee I won't get stuck again?
Tell me when. Tell me how.

چقدر این مجموعه شعر شل سیلوراستاین بامزه و احمقانه بود! واقعاً با بعضی‌هاش خنده روی لبم نشست. مخصوصاً برای ما فارسی زبان‌ها که به قافیه داشتن شعر زیادی عادت داریم، اینجا عمو شلبی از هر روشی که تونسته استفاده کرده که اشعارش قافیه داشته باشند. نکته‌ی دیگه اینه که تصاویر کتاب فقط برای پر کردن و جالب کردن کتاب نیستند و گاهی نگاه کردن بهشون برای متوجه شدن ماجرا لازمه

واضحه که همش رو دوست نداشتم و خیلی‌هاش واقعاً خستم کردند. اما در نهایت به خواندن اون‌هایی که خوب بودند کاملاً می‌ارزید

Diving Board

You've been up on that diving board
Making sure that it's nice and straight.
You've made sure that it's not too slick.
You've made sure that it can stand the weight.
You've made sure that the spring is tight.
You've made sure that the cloth won't slip.
You've made sure that it bounces right.
And now that your toes can get a grip -
And you've been up there since half past five

I am not sure if anyone writes children's poetry quite like Silverstein but it is one of my favorites for sure!

Ever since I was little, I have been a huge fan of Shel Silverstein’s works as they were creative, controversial and hilarious to read through! I have practically read almost all of Shel Silverstein’s works including Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and Every Thing on It and I had enjoyed every single one of them! Now, I have finally read another one of Shel Silverstein’s books called “Falling Up” and it was just as enjoyable as Shel Silverstein’s other works!

This is another book that has a set of Shel Silverstein’s famous poems and some of the poems featured in this book include:

FALLING UP

I tripped on my shoelace
And I fell up-
Up to the roof tops,
Up over the town,
Up past the tree tops,
Up over the mountains,
Up where the colors
Blend into the sounds.
But it got me so dizzy
When I looked around,
I got sick to my stomach
And I threw down.

Once again, Shel Silverstein had piqued my interest in his talent for writing surreal and hilarious poetry that interest children as well as adults! I loved the wacky style that Shel Silverstein puts into the poems as the characters are always doing bizarre things such as in the poem “Complainin’ Jack” where a Jack-in-a-box just complains all day and in the poem “Rotten Convention” where there is a vast array of horrible characters such as Hamburger Face and Gruesome Grace attending a convention. I also loved Shel Silverstein’s artwork as it is mostly in black and white colorings and is truly surreal to look at. Probably my favorite illustrations in this book was of the image of the pet lion in the poem “Unfair” as it looked incredibly creepy and surreal at the same time and the characters from the poem “Rotten Convention” as they look truly frightening and surreal, especially the image of a man who has a knife going through his head.



Parents should know that like most of Shel Silverstein’s books, there are some poems that might either frighten children or cause them to perform the crazy stunts that the characters did in this book. Probably some of the most suggestive poems in this book would be “Crazy Dream” which involves a child having a dream about torturing his teachers and that might convince small children to do the same and “Spoiled Brat” where a child is eaten alive which would frighten small children. Parents should probably read this book before they show it to their children to see if they can handle the content in this book.

Overall, “Falling Up” is a truly brilliant book that contains some of Shel Silverstein’s most memorable poems and many adults and children will definitely enjoy the wacky humor of these poems! I would highly recommend this book to children ages six and up since there are some suggestive content in this book that adults might want to discuss with their children about.

اشعار کوتاه بامزه‌ی به ظاهر کودکانه ولی معنادار.
بعضی از شعرهاش واقعا منو می‌خندوند یا به فکر فرو می‌برد.
خلاقیت شل سیلورستان فوق‌العاده بالاست.
ترجمه حمید خادمی خیلی خوب بود ولی متن انگلیسیش بهتر حس رو منتقل می‌کرد که مخصوصا در مورد شعر طبیعیه.

با اینکه ترجمه ی نسبتا خوبی داشت، ولی بنظرم اصلا قابل ترجمه نیستن این شعرها.. وخوشحالم که متن انگلیسی شان هم بود که از خواندنشان لذت ببرم :)
نقاشی های قشنگش.. قوه ی تخیل بامزه ش که انگار از بند اون چارچوب های ذهنی رهامون می کرد...
از این واااقعا خوشم اومد :))
" پام گفت: هی، بریم برقصیم.
زبونم گفت: بیا بریم یه لقمه بزنیم.
مغزم گفت: بیا یه کتاب خوب بخونیم.
چشمم گفت: بیا یه چرتی بزنیم.
زانوم گفت: بیا یک کم راه بریم.
پشتم گفت: بیا سوار کاری کنیم.
نشیمنم گفت: خوب، من هم همین جا می شینم تا شما ها تصمیم تون رو بگیرید."
همچنین "داستان لک لک" رو هم خیلی دوست داشتم :)

I fell in love with the plays on words and how childlike the poems were. It didn't take a whole lot of thinking to interpret the poems, because it was all there, clearly stated in the poem.

One thing about Silverstein is his literature never lacks imagination or wonder. I had this book at one point and remember reading it to my kids. I recently purchased a first edition 1996 to replace my missing book. Is it as good as Where the Sidewalk Ends? No. The giving Tree? No. It is a well written book of wildly imaginative poems and drawings for all age groups. I would recommend this for all elementary age readers and any age group seeking imaginative writing.

سقوط به بالا/ شل سیلور استاین/ ترجمه رضی هیرمندی/ نشر هستان/ 204 صفحه/ چاپ چهارم 1394/ تاریخ تموم کردن کتاب: چهارشنبه 16 فروردین 96
کتابی دوزبانه شامل آخرین مجموعه شعرهای عمو شلبی عزیز برای کودکان و نوجوانان. ویژگی این کتابش هم مثل اکثر کتاباش، بیان ساده و متفاوت ولی پرمحتواست. البته میشه گفت 60 درصد شعرای کتاب محتواش واقعا برای بچه ها جذابیت داره و برای سن های بالاتر صرفا جالب می تونه باشه و ذهن رو مشغول نمی کنه چندان. شعرهای خوب زیاد توش هست که برای بزرگترها هم جالب باشه هم فکرشون رو مشغول کنه و چیزی یاد بگیرن یا یادآوری بشه. از خوندن این کتاب لذت بردم. خداروشکر واقعا که شل سیلور استاینی بوده که این ها رو بنویسه و برای مدت کوتاهی هم که شده ما رو از جدی بودن زندگی دورتر کنه. راستی ترجمه ی کتاب برای اکثر شعرها افتضاح بود. مترجم سعی کرده ورژن فارسی شعرها رو هم مثل ورژن انگلیسی آهنگین و با قافیه کنه ولی به شدت ناموفق بوده و ترجمه لوس و خیلی جاها کاملا متفاوت با ورژن انگلیسی هست. منظورم از متفاوت یعنی اینکه نه تنها واژه ها عوض شده بلکه مفهوم و محتوا و کلا همه چی عوض شده انگار یه متن دیگه رو ترجمه کرده !!! ورژن انگلیسیش که اصلیش هست خوبه و شعرا اگر هم آهنگین هستن به طرز موفق و خوبی این کار رو خودِ شِل انجام داده.

4.0 to 4.5 stars. I think this is my favorite Shel Silverstein offering. One of those books that can be enjoyed by children and adults depending on how deeply you dive into the meaning of the stories. Incredibly imaginative and very well done.

After seeing this on one of my friends list I couldn’t resist re-reading it. I read this book to my children when they were small. It’s both entertaining and educational. It’s a great way to introduce children to art, poetry and the limitless of one’s imagination.

This is the third Silverstein book I've read to my brother, and he hasn't seemed to show me one bit that he's tired of it. He's really enjoyed this one, and I found myself laughing out loud a couple of times too. This is another great book to read at bedtime or I guess, anytime.

Odd little poems with even odder drawings.

With black, sketched illustrations on cream colored pages, the words flow down the pages as they do off of the reader’s tongue. The lyrical type narration use rhyme and repetition to show the adventure of Pinocchio (on page 46). An illustration of the wooden toy boy sits on the bottom of the page, with his nose as long as one, two, three lies. About ten stanzas long, this tale is only a part of the 171 page long book of poems for young readers. The silly and quirky stories use different types of poetic structures to show different themes- from deep messages about telling the truth to respecting grownups. The real life type themes are twisted with a mix of humor, these aspects combined appealing to kids who can relate to the messages. The lack of color and detailed illustration is made up by the witty and unique use of words. The words alone paint a picture in the readers mind, and evoke the children reader’s creativity and help to grow their analytical skills. As they read, the children can pick up on the poetic style and may feel inspired to write their own poems. Kudos to Shel Silverstein, the author of Falling Up, for giving children an uplifting and relatable inspiration to become a poet themselves.

Falling Up is another fantastic book of pure fun, laughter and adorable illustrations by Shel Silverstein!!
I'll share with you two of my favorites. From the first poem to the last, this book is sure to put a big smile on your face 😃
FALLING UP

A book of humorous poems and puns and quirky drawings with a cast of eccentric characters from Danny O’Dare the dancing bear, Screamin’ Millie, Terrible Toy-Eatin’ Tookle, Remote-a-Dade, to Allison Beals and her 25 Eels. Whether you are Falling Up Plugging In, or Hand Holding, this Warmhearted collection will not be Hard to Please its target audience of ages four to ten. However, like the Brothers Grimm some of the them may be quite gruesome and terrifying like the carnivorous rabbit, a spoiled brat boiled in a vat, the haunted house, poison, and a chopped head. Approach with care and humor.

i remember when i was in first grade, i had to do read a poem from his poem book Falling Up and i decided to pick a poem about this little kid going home and he notices a hat following him, the little kid gets all paranoid and relizes the hat has a tail. the little boy picks up the hat a comes to find that under the hat was either a little cat or a dog, i really cant remember, it was kind of a long time ago. but those poems made up my childhood. they made me think, analize, and got me to believe that the world is really this smooth wonderful place. this is a good mindset for a child and thats why i really like this book.

A fun collection of poems that put a smile on the face!
I enjoyed the play of words and the varied themes on which these are based.
Particularly enjoyable are the verses that pun on numbers and words to rhyme and tell a story.
The illustrations are really good too, making me wish I had a physical copy of this book.

Who can resist Shel Silverstein? I've read Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic over and over and over, sharing them with kids at the library, but I'm pretty sure I never read Falling Up. If you haven't read it, happily I encourage you to pick it up and give it a read very soon...It's delightful.
