In part one of the new Dark and Dirty Tale serial by New York Times and USA best-selling author Kristin Miller, you’ll meet Red, a wolf shifter with too many choices.
I’m indecisive when it comes to my shoes. Choosing a werewolf mate who’ll be with me until I croak? Pardon me while I take some time to think on it. But a steamy encounter before the final ceremony changes everything.
Reaper, the Omega’s eldest grandson, is fiercely loyal, scorching hot, and built for pleasure. He brings down my defenses, and before I know what’s happening, I succumb to the heat in his touch and the skill of his mouth. I’ve only just met him, but I need him like no other.
As part of my pack duties, I must parade in front of the Alpha, who has first choice of the pre-shifters. Rumors of his dark desires run deep, and I’ve always been intrigued. But the forbidden passion blazing between Reaper and me is too primal to deny. By pack law, Reaper can’t have me until the Alpha makes his choice…but Reaper’s never been one to follow the rules.
Get ready for scorching hot Alphas, a spitfire heroine, and a breathless cliffhanger ending!
The Dark and Dirty Tale series is best enjoyed in this reading order.
Book #1 Desiring Red Book #2 Dominating Red Book#3 Dangerously Red – Coming July 17th.
New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Kristin Miller writes sweet and sassy contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and paranormal romance of all varieties. Kristin has degrees in psychology, English, and education, and taught high school and middle school English before crossing over to a career in writing. She lives in Northern California with her alpha male husband and their two children. She loves chocolate way more than she should and the gym less. You can usually find her in the corner of a coffee shop, laptop in front of her and mocha in hand, using the guests around her as fuel for her next book.
Desiring Red is book one in the series, A Dark and Dirty Tale by Kristin Miller. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by NetGalley, Entangled Publishing and by the author. This is one of the brand new books from the Scorched line from Entangled and I loved it.
Ivy is brand new to the Arcana Wolf Pack. She is considered a pre-shifter. She and some other of the pre-shifters must each visit with the alpha, Lukas, for the first time. He may then choose one of them for as long as he wishes to have them. She is then supposed to declare her loyalty to the pack and choose a mate. Has she chosen one yet? No. So, she is in the garden in a state of panic before the ceremony when HE comes along. No-one is allowed to touch one of the pre-shifters until the alpha has made his choice. But when Reaper touches her, there is an electric spark. A yearning for this man she has never felt.
“My body responds to his on a primal level I can’t explain, in a way I’ve never known. I don’t want him. I need him, more than the useless air in my lungs.”
Reaper has been away from his pack for years. His grandmother, the Omega, has called him back to help with something. So he is only back temporarily. As soon as he saw Ivy in that garden, he had to have her. He wasn’t supposed to touch her until the alpha, his cousin, has made his choice. But he can’t stop himself.
“She’s everything. Made only for me. Mine.”
When Ivy’s turn comes up and she meets the alpha, he is not what she thought he would be at all.
“They’re like two sides of a coin, each intriguing for completely different reasons, yet cut from the same steel.”
This was a very short book, the first in a serial. So there is a cliffy, a big one. This was my first book by this author and I loved her style of writing. Once I started this, I had to go ahead and read the whole thing. I couldn’t put it down. Ivy and Reaper are drawn together by a force greater then either of them can fight. Even though it is against the pack’s rules. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series. I’m absolutely thrilled with this new Scorched line from Entangled. Another new to me author and another home run. Perfection.

A pretty good short story, thought I felt that I was missing information and had to check to make sure that it was the first book in the series. I feel a little like I started the story in the middle of the book because there wasn't enough background given for me to get a feel of what was going on in the story. I'm not sure if more information was going to be provided slowly as the story progressed, but I think this backfired on the author as the story ended in a cliffhanger and I just felt confused.
I did like the chemistry between Ivy and Reaper, but I was a little confused when she was also attracted to Lukas. I looked at the cover and though ok, maybe this is a menage, but in this first part of the book it isn't. So many questions unanswered and I'm feeling a little bit cheated because not only did I not get enough information at the beginning, but the story ends in a cliffhanger.
Hopefully the next book in the series will clear up all the questions that I have.
Ivy is a werewolf who has yet to experience her first shift. She recently lost both of her parents and they made her promise to join the local pack so that the alpha could teach her how to control her shift and everything else she needs to know about being a werewolf. Now, she's fast approaching the ceremony that will see her officially accepted into the pack and allow her to make her first change. It's also the ceremony where she must choose her life mate (unless she is chosen by the pack alpha, Lukas, since he gets first dibs on whatever women he wants!)but it's kind of difficult to make a decision when you've not met any of the available options yet. A brief encounter with the Omega's grandson, Reaper, in the gardens before the ceremony begins changes everything but it's forbidden to Reaper to touch her until after Lukas has made his choice.
I have to confess I was expecting a ménage story from the super hot covers for this series so I was a little disappointed when I realised it was actually a story about two different men vying for Ivy's attention and her struggling to choose between them. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just not what I was looking for when I picked up this book and I've never been a fan of love triangles.
However, that's not much of an issue because this instalment is all about Reaper. He is the omega's oldest grandson and the rightful alpha of the pack but he walked away from it all to hunt for the person who murdered his parents. He's only visiting briefly to check in with his grandmother before going back to his search so he's not really a long term option for Ivy but she finds him incredibly hard to resist. There is no denying the chemistry between them and this novella includes some great steamy encounters but Ivy is also drawn to his cousin Lukas, who is standing in as Alpha until Reaper returns for good.
I had a few issues with the world building but I'm willing to overlook those in the first novella in a trilogy and hopefully things will be expanded upon in the next two novellas. Desiring Red is a short but hot read and I definitely enjoyed it enough to continue reading. I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the serial novella format though. I just think that serials aren't great value for money, especially when you consider that each section is only about 55 pages long! There doesn't seem to be any need to split a 150 page story into three parts apart from to get more money out of readers and I don't think it's a good tactic for publishers to use.

okay, so ... waaaaaaaay outside my reading comfort zone. and when I say way, I mean a galaxy far far away! i took the opportunity to read this story by Entangled Publishing's new line: Scorched because I not only wanted to broaden my horizons, but also test out this new line by Entangled. And I have to say that for craycray this was really good. It is the start of a serial, which I will probably not be continuing (and again, NOT because of the writing at all but because this is just not my thing), so it took no time for me to read. But what I did read was very engaging, even for me! I kind of wish it wasn't a shifter romance because I think I would really really enjoy it. But not everything is for everyone so let's move on .... I really liked the style and voice of Kristin Miller. It was sexy and humorous and very detailed. The descriptions were very vivid and added to the depth of what's to come in this story. So overall, I have to give this very high marks. If shifter romances/story-lines are your thing ... I think this would make an excellent choice for you. Copy provided by the publisher for review
I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. 3.5 Stars 'Desiring Red' by Kristin Miller is about 60 pages long. It does open you up to a cliffhanger at the end to introduce the next book it appears. Ms. Miller wrote a very hot, exciting book that I can't wait to read more of. Ivy is a wolf shifter who has hit the 25 year age mark were she needs to find a mate. The alpha wolf of a pack she is thinking of joining holds a line up of women who he might consider as a mate. While waiting to be called to the Alpha.. Ivy meets Reaper. Ivy and reaper are attracted to one another and hope that the Alpha won't pick her. But after Ivy meets the Alpha it would appear that she likes him too.
As much as I hate serials this one was promising. My biggest problem with them is due to the short length the stories have so little depth. So many more details could have been added.
Right off the bat, I still love Kristin's writing even when this serials has an erotic taste. When reading the description of Desiring Red, I was like this young female just has no clue what she's getting herself into and that was the interesting part on reading to see how she figures things out. As well the two werewolves that will turn her world upside down.
A little bit on Ivy, the poor girl that is in this uncertainly about life. I guess it's one thing to figure out what you want to do in life, it's another to try and figure out who you want to be with the rest of your life. Ivy doesn't have complete confidence in herself, until . . . Reaper comes along.
The Mysterious Reaper, he's supposed to be next in line but he's decided to drop everything to go chase a ghost. When he return after being gone for extend amount of time, the first thing he sees is Ivy, in a deep red robe, panicky. When they touch it's instant chemistry. I actually really am drawn to Reaper . . . But I know nothing but his reputation and very little of his past.
Next we have the up and coming Alpha Lukas, I'm not even sure where he stands other than he can pick and choose any women to be his mate or his plaything (if you know what I mean). When Ivy has to be in his presence the first thing he does is brings out the Brandy. During their little interactions, I wasn't sure if bring out the Brandy was a way for him to get through all of this or simple just to drunken up female pre-shifers. But he didn't do either to Ivy, in fact he was rather curious about her since for Ivy its not about just her being a pre-shifter, it's also for her to determine if she want to join the pack.
NOTE this book ends in the biggest cliff hanger ever! I mean after getting to those last few words I was like "That's it?" That's all I get? But again it is a serial, so I can't wait to keep on reading it.
I give this 5 Cat Paws, clearly I was instantly drawn between Ivy and Reaper and their instant hot and sexy moments.
What can I say I love a good shifter romance and am always on the lookout for another one to read? Desiring Red is the first book in a serial about not one but two hot as hell, dominating, alpha males who happen to be shifters and who are both wanting the same woman, oh add into it one is the current alpha of the pack and the other was the alpha but stepped down to find out who killed his parents. Did I mention they are cousins as well? No? Oops well now you know. Reaper and Lukas are sizzling hot and I wish I was the one they both wanted but that would be Ivy, the one who has to pick her mate, the one who has not one but two hot wolves wanting her, and the one I think is going to bring both of these wolves to heel. Okay bad canine pun there sorry, but my point is this quick read is hot, sexy and is not lacking at all in the sexy department. Desiring Red has this book whore needing more of Reaper, Lukas and Ivy. I want to know not only who will Ivy claim as her mate, but what sparks will fly between all three of them.
What an awesome beginning to a series! It was a short read, but damn! It was hot! And I can't decide between Lukas and Reaper!
Not my usual genre, but I was intrigued from the first sentence. Ivy is a pre-shifter (werewolf) and has no mate. She must be mated before shifting whether it be to the Alpha or another pre-shifter. She must present herself to the Alpha Lukas with others for his choosing. But before we even get to that point, Ivy meets Reaper in the garden and of course, the connection is immediate. But Reaper can't be with Ivy based on the rules of the pack and he's busyring trying to avenge his parent's death. When Ivy does finally present herself to Lukas, the sparks were flying. The sexual innuendo as he taught her the proper way to drink brandy....yep, steamy!
And then, Lukas picks Ivy. Angsty! And major cliffhanger!
I was provided a copy of this book through NetGalley.
First of all, let me point out that DESIRING RED ends in a cliffhanger, and what a cliffhanger it is! I hadn’t even read the last word, that I was already wishing for the next instalment.
Ivy Douglas is a pre-shifter, a werewolf who is yet to shift, and she had never been actively looking for a mate, but now she’s left with only six hours to choose the one, or she’ll be stuck in an arranged marriage by the Omega, the oldest in the pack, if she is to belong to the pack. While taking a stroll in a park and pondering on her future, she meets the most gorgeous werewolf: Reaper. He is the Omega’s grandson, thus off-limits – sigh! – but he is not really supposed to be there; Reaper is actively searching for his parents’ murderer. And thus begins DESIRING RED.
Kristin Miller writes fabulous paranormal romances, and this first instalment of a new series doesn’t disappoint! As expected, it’s extremely well-written, the dialogues are sexy and fun, and the descriptions are just fabulous: I could easily picture Arcana Castle in all its glory. While I often find it difficult to digest, Ms. Miller made the instalust entirely plausible, because Ivy is also perplexed by how she is attracted to Reaper and … Well, let’s not digress… DESIRING RED is scorching hot, but I was also quite pleased that the seeds of what promises to be a very intriguing story have been sown, and I can hardly wait for the next episode! DESIRING RED is as complex, intoxicating, and delectable as a tumbler of the finest brandy (wink for those who will read it!). Lots of fine reading ahead from Kristin Miller!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Desiring Red's blue eyed and flaxen haired Ivy has a dilemma, she has to join a pack before its too late. To make things scarier her chosen pack (Arcana Pack) requires that she chooses a mate. So, how and who do you choose when you don’t know anyone? Well, good ole Fate (that twisted sister) has a way of stepping in when you least expect it. Yep, Fate is that lady who sometimes pitches unsuspecting victims deeper in the poo and poor, poor Ivy doesn't know what hit her when a little breather turns into Fate’s Special Poop Hole.
Honestly, I think that I kinda envy the girl. If the Special Poop Hole are two absolutely gorgeous alpha males then sign me up. Reaper the passionate former alpha of the Arcana pack didn't return to his granny’s fairytale castle expecting to find his possible future. but when fate throws him a treat wearing a nice red cloak, how can he not take a bite. Ivy and Reaper are drawn to one another immediately and he could be the answer to her mate dilemma. But as Poop Holes go … it only gets deeper and as she comes out the other side there is the pack alpha Lukas.
So, I like a good retelling of a classic fairytale. Who doesn't know the story of Little Red Riding Hood and wondered what the heck was she really doing in those woods. Well, this Red may have a little of the little cinder girl mixed in because she has two princes (of sorts) who happen to be worthy in their own right. The characters fit the tale very well because have Red the not so classic damsel but as the reader you have to decide which alpha is the real Big Bad Wolf.
Ivy is not happy. She is being led around like a prized horse for the alpha wolf to assess and decide if she can join the pack. No only that, she may end up mated. In this archaic practice, Ivy feels demeaned and she is a bit nervous.
Her nervousness carries through this entire short story. Ms. Miller is new to me and the blurb sounded interesting. I didn't realize this was more a serial than a full story. This first part is short, a bit chaotic and just whets a reader's appetite. The characters are a bit forgettable. The plot is okay. The desperate longing between Ivy and the Omega is a bit dramatic for people who just met. Their chemistry was just okay for me too.
This story does start out nicely and it does pique my interest in the next part. This short paranormal romance is recommended for readers who like an ingenue thrown to the wolves.
This book was a surprising little gem from a new to me author. For me paranormal books can go either way but this one was a sensual erotic read and I enjoyed every minute of it....who knew reading about drinking brandy could be so titillating. I loved the characters, Ivy, Reaper, and Lukas, each one of them brings a different quality to the story.
We are left with a cliffy so I am off to read Dominating Red to see what happens next.
***I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I wished for and it was granted by Entangled Publishing, LLC - Scorched through Netgalley*** https://www.netgalley.com
I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed books by this author in the past, so when I was contacted and given the opportunity to read and honestly review this, I jumped at the opportunity. Anyone who has followed my reviews for long will know that I don’t choose to read books which are generally classified as erotica - which this novella is. However, there is a solid plot structure in this as well as some steamy scenes making it an easy, quick read.
The heroine for the story, Ivy Douglas, tells many of the events in the first person, making it easy to relate to her and to understand her motives and feelings. Having lost both her parents in a relatively short time, she is struggling to accept her heritage as a werewolf but is following her mother’s instructions to join this particular pack so they can help her learn to shift and fit in. The pack has a special ceremony in January when pre shifters are paraded before the Alpha for him to choose or reject as he sees fit before they choosing their mate for life. Ivy was unsure who she should choose until a chance encounter in the gardens awakens her desires. Then she meets the Alpha and he’s hot, too! What on earth is the girl to do? Should she choose Reaper or Lukas - or let the Omega choose for her? Decisions, decisions, decisions!
This is a short, hot, paranormal romance with two powerful Alphas vying for Ivy’s attention but will she be won by either of them - or someone else? I’ll warn you it ends on a brilliant cliff hanger to tempt you to read the sequel as soon as you can (the same day in my case!)
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this in exchange for my honest review.
I was given a free copy for an honest review, I loved this book, Reaper is Sexy, Mysterious and Hot as Hell.... Ivy sassy and genuine. A Shiftier Romance, As a pre-shiftier Ivy needs to pledge her loyalty to the pack, any pack that will protect her as a family. Her dying mothers wish was for her to pledge her loyalty to the Reapers pack. He has been absent from his pack for may years searching for his parents killer. They meet by chance on the night of the pre-shiftier ceremony, Ivy and Reaper have a connection, but she must declare a mate by the end of the January Moon or a mate will be chosen for her by the Omega " a grandmother of sorts ". Reaper doesn't want a mate, he is only here to help his grandmother, pledge his loyalty to the pack then he's back to searching for his parents killer. Wickedly awesome read!!! Add to your TBR
Reaper and Lukas are both seriously HOT and sexy, and either one will be perfect for Ivy. Or can she have both? But I'm leaning towards Reaper right now...of course, that may change with the next installment. Didn't really see the dark.
Why did there have to be a cliffy right when someone gets tied up? Where's the next part?
This was one Steamy HOT book that grabbed my attention from the first several pages. Desiring Red is new by Kristin Miller in her paranormal wolves saga and is a steamier read than from her previous works. This is one of the brand new books from the Scorched line from publisher Entangled Publishing and I have to say-WOW, it really does scorch you when reading the intensity and the passion from the MC involved. Here we have Ivy who is brand new to the Arcana Wolf Pack and she has come to be presented to them before she shifts. She promised her parents she would do this and now that they are no longer living, she especially wants to honor their wishes but she is terrified she mistake. Ivy is considered a pre-shifter and the “pre shifters” must meet with the alpha for the first time. There is this thing where he can keep them for as long as he chooses to. Ivy hasn’t met Lukas yet and she is in a tizzy over what he will think of her. Ivy ends up in the rose garden, trying to calm down when she runs into the sexiest man ever who touches her soul with this spark that she has never felt before. There is the immediate sensual spell woven between them when this man, Reaper, touches her, Ivy has never felt like this , ever , before. Reaper has been away from his pack for awhile, looking for the person(s) who murdered his parents. His grandmother, the Omega has called him home to help her with something to do with the pack. His being back looks to be temporary but when he saw Ivy in the garden he felt this pull to her and went down to meet her. Repaer knew he shouldn’t have touched her because she was his cousin, the alpha’s until he had made his choice but he couldn’t help this pull he felt toward her. Ivy thought her and Reaper had something going and that her meeting the alpha would be ok, that he wouldn’t want her. Well, that isn’t quite what happned. She met the alpha and that was an experience in itself. Lukas was not what she was expecting and Ivy is left uncertain by this encounter. What is going on? Lukas isn’t the bad guy that she thought, he seemed to have this magic about him, all she knows is she is drawn to Reaper and his touch as well. The book ending an an epic cliffhanger; also this is a short book, like 55 or 56 pages so even with it being this short, it packs a huge punch. I loved this story and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Miller has coming up next because the Reaper/Ivy/Lukas triangle has me quite intrigued. This paranormal hotness of a story is something I do quite enjoy and am ready to read more of .
My rating: 4.8 stars ***** **I was given an ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review***
This very short read is the beginning of a very promising shifter series.
We begin with Ivy who is nervously waiting to meet the alpha of the pack she is joining. With no mate to claim, and nervous about meeting her current alpha, Ivy takes a walk into the gardens to think. It is there she meets Reaper. We are given a short understanding of who he is and what he is doing there. He is attracted to this girl and it does not help knowing his cousin, the current alpha will be picking a girl who he will take to his bed. There is pack law and it is not to be ignored and Reaper knows and understands this.. Yet Ivy, has him behaving in a way that he would not otherwise. He is back home at the request of his grandmother, the omega of his pack. Someone is setting her up for a fall and she needs Reapers help to discover the culprit.
With what the author has provided in this short but packed novella I just know the series will be awesome. I look forward to the release of the next book. Ivy has attracted two very alpha and handsome men. What happens next is to be seen. This author has a way of drawing you in to her story to where you will have a hard time waiting to see what she offers up next. The bases have been outlined, let the adventure begin.
Desiring Red is one of the first books in the brand new Scorched line by Entangled. It is very short and has a massive cliffhanger. This is really one of the only reasons I didnt rate it 5 stars. Im not really much of a paranormal reader but anything Entangled puts out catches my attention so of course this was on my watch list. The story follows Ivy, who is a pre-shifter as she joins a wolf pack and is trying to find her life mate. There is a ritual of sorts that she must undergo before she picks her mate (involving the alpha wolf) and Ivy finds herself torn between two males. She desires both of them very much. I must say that for such a short book, there is a LOT of story packed in these pages. And its good story. Well fleshed out characters, colorful scenes and ohhh myyyy... at the sexy times. Whoever came up with the name scorched was right on the money. This book was HOT! I am very anxious to get my hands on the sequel and rate Desiring Red a solid 4**** WickedGoodStars!
Ivy Douglas is a pre-shifter without a pack or a mate. Time is running out for Ivy. She needs the support of a mate and a pack to help her learn the ways of the shifter life. This night will decide her fate and her future in the Arcana Wolf pack. Holding to tradition, all pre-shifter females must present themselves to Lukas the Alpha. The honor is bestowed upon the one female who will be spend an hour with the Alpha before the mating ceremony. But before Ivy has the chance to present herself she is caught up in Reaper's web of attraction and desire.
But Reaper is the former Alpha, with a vendetta of his own. Just his presence is a threat the Alpha's rule. Though Reaper has no desire to rule or mate, his attraction toward Ivy is disturbing and the thought of letting Lukas have her is too much for him to digest.
Wow! From the very beginning I was caught up in this story. Ivy and her inner thoughts are highly entertaining. She is so normal and I thought she was cute, personality wise. Then she meets Reaper, and holy moly does he bring the heat. He is explosive and Ivy is unable to resist him. But I know I wouldn't be able to. Goodness his words and his actions...light her up fast. And their connection is insane! Their interactions are over and she then meets Lukas. And he is slow soothing, very intriguing. How lucky is Ivy?!?! I cannot wait for the next part of this story. I must know how it ends and what happens to Ivy, Reaper and Lukas. Either way it finishes, I know it will be hot and sexy!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.
Very short and fast paced story about a werewolf (Reaper) who comes back to his late parents pack after trying to find their killers, and meets a pre-shifter (Ivy) who is about to enter the pack in a ceremony with the Alpha male. I'm not a big fan of short stories, nor this genre of books, but having said that, this book kept my interest right up to the cliffhanger ending. Lots of erotic, hot scenes between Reaper and Ivy, and the suspense of what happens at the end made the story pretty interesting. If this is the type of genre you like, then you will love this book.
I received this ARC book in exchange for an honest review.
The opening synopsis had me chuckling with all the sass it contained from Ivy :P and the lustfullness between Ivy and Reaper was palpable with many very detailed interludes throughout the read. Lukas is a mysterious stand out for certain. Time will tell where the rest of this saga will go. A good start to the Dark and Dirty Tale trilogy for sure. Review copy received from Entangled Publishing for an honest rating
Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy this book. I was a short read, ends on sort of a cliffhanger and is the first book in this series. I felt that there wasn't a strong enough plot line so it didn't keep my interest for long. I think it possibly might have been a more enjoyable book to read if it had been a complete story instead of being the first part of one. I don't think I would continuing reading this series.
