When High Priestess Rose-Thorne bets her granddaughter Winter’s womb in a broom flying contest and loses, Winter wonders where the real danger lies: from the Witch Hunters she fled from the far north, or her shady grandmother.

Given until Yule to reverse the outcome, the teen ice witch discovers her inner earth magic and finds solace with friends, including Turmeric of the Wormwood clan. Turmeric warms Winter’s frozen heart, but their love defies the Segregation Curse of Old, cast by the Elders to preserve ancient bloodlines. Winter's Curse, the first installment of the Season of the Witch series by debut author, April L. Wood, is a fantastic magical adventure, sure to delight readers of all ages.

Winter Rose-Thorne's life is difficult enough. She has just been forced to flee her homeland from the dreaded Witch Hunters. Now her grandmother has lost a bet… one in which she wagered Winter's fertility. Devastated by this new curse, Winter seeks to reverse it with the unexpected though very welcome help of Turmeric Wormwood. Turmeric is handsome, charming, chivalrous… and forbidden. In an attempt to preserve and purify ancient clan bloodlines, the Elders cast a Segregation Curse to keep young lovers from different clans apart.

The stakes are high in this exhilarating and captivating Urban Fantasy novel. The characters are written so that I could see them, hear them, experience their joy and fear and sorrow and love. And the setting… Oh my goodness, the world that Ms. Wood has crafted is perfect for this time of year in which the days are getting shorter and nights becoming cooler and crisper.

Magic is in the air, and if by some chance you can't feel it, simply pick up a copy of this book, for you will surely find it within the pages.

A young adult romance with witches, this urban fantasy integrates fiction with our modern world. Winter is chased from her home by witch hunters and races against time to reach a safe haven. But how safe is it, and what dark secrets have been carried by those of the covens?

She finds comfort with a boy, not of her clan, and discovers how unforgiving the Segregation Curse is. Determined to shift the tares from the wheat, she struggles at every turn to discover the realities about herself, her curse, and those who pretend to be her allies. Will she learn the truth in time, or will she be lost?

I found this story interesting on many levels. It is fast paced with a blend of mundane and magic. While not a typical read for me, it picked up well and continued with enough momentum to keep me reading on. April L. Wood has done a great job.

But don’t believe me. Pick up a copy and look for yourself. Be sure and drop a review. She will thank you for it.

A Lovely Wintery Read

Since Mother Nature decided to drop an ice storm on us last night, I gave up on being productive and curled up with a blanket, a cat, and "Winter's Curse." It was one of my better choices :)

April Wood has created a world where the magical and mundane co-exist, where witches are both casually mystical and surprisingly human. Balancing teen angst, family drama, young love, Clan politics, curses, and homework is no small feat, but Winter handles it all with refreshing honesty.

I'm glad I bought the combo-pack, I'm ready for the sequel.

I quite enjoyed reading this book. It’s got a great pace and lots of unexpected twists and turns in it. I really thought the romance was beautifully done and perfect for a young person to read. The handling of the witch community was excellent and very realistic. This author obviously did her research.

This is one of those reads you find yourself expressing awe at the turn of every page. It’s not only a work with a unique concept, but also pushes the limits of story expectation by surprising you with its narrative. Wood uses the present tense to tell her story, which accentuates the immediacy of everything that’s going on. It’s not often that a book unravels its plot much in the way a film does, revealing its points and incidents in real time, as though the audience were moving through the story with its heroine, Winter of the Rose-Thorne Clan. The reader gets to experience her world as she does—and what a world it is. It is strange in the most normal of ways, with witches out of the broom closet, living peacefully among humans in Massachusetts (not Salem but Springfield). The atmosphere of Wood’s novel reminds the reader of Charlaine Harris’s small town universe where vampires and fairies and weres and telepaths all mingle as though it ain’t nothin’ but an ordinary Wednesday.

And here’s the thing—in “Winter’s Curse” Wood springs the extraordinary on you in the most ordinary of ways, slipping it in-between the action. From slushy tears to segregation curses to broom flying contests to pennyroyal oil tea, Wood’s imaginative talent shines through. But her story is not without an underlying theme, a message that seems boiling beneath, readying itself to burst to the surface. Nature at its very core is magic, and is the only true magic we posses. And by nature I mean nature with a capital N, and nature as in our core, our fabric, who we are and how we treat each other. The theme here is big and laden and busting at every seam so that it’s impossible to miss, which I think is the point. We cannot live without it, and should count ourselves fortunate that it—or she, as in Mother Nature—tolerates us. For the fantasy minded, the natural romantic, and the conscientious reader, “Winter’s Curse” will surely entertain. And for some, it may remind you that “every soul is a flower blossoming in nature.”

* The author gave me a copy of "Winter’s Curse" for an honest and fair review.

Wow, what a wonderful story! Books about witches and curses don't usually interest me. I'm too analytical to get lost in a fantasy or paranormal world. Winter's Curse was an extraordinary exception that kept me turning the pages. I can't remember the last time I read a book that sparked my imagination like this did!

The author was cleverly creative and delightfully descriptive. The story was original and well-thought out. I would definitely recommend a Winter's Curse and am looking forward to the next book in the Season of the Witch series.

Author April L. Wood has created a unique world of witches that also blends with humans - they coexist together! I loved the different groups of witches and how you could tell which clan they were in based on their physical characteristics.

The story revolves around Winter Rose-Thorne who is trying to heal from the recent death of her mother, finding her place at school, and living with her pretty weird grandmother. She is a patient and powerful teen witch who can manifest what she needs to get through challenges and seek higher guidance.

Winter has to break ancient curses to be with her sweetheart and live the life she desires. With the help of another witch, Clover, Winter is able to solve mysteries and gain momentum - oh, the suspense!

Winter's Curse has an exciting mix of romance, darkness, and family drama. I was drawn in by all of the details - it truly made the story for me! There are a lot of great characters, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. Five stars all day long.

Winter's curse was a nice descriptive book that gave witches a new name to me. I enjoyed the magic system the twists and turns and the characters were relatable as well. In addition I enjoyed the realistic concepts of school and other things.  My only issue I had with this was that some of the plot was a tad convenient and made things tied up in a little bow... because of this I give this book 4.5/5 stars  I am so glad I saw this book on Jacqueline E Smith's page and picked it up especially during this cold winter day/night. I look forward to reading the rest of the series when I can acquire them and absolutely recommend it!!

I can't believe how much I liked Winter's Curse! I'm not a huge fan of witches...

I don't know why, as magical creatures, they have never held a place in my heart like vampires, but this book dragged me in from the very first page.

OMG! From the very start of this book, you have the heroine running away from her homeland with her mother, you have festivals, witches on brooms in a sporting event, a gambling grandmother, and a curse! I couldn't put this book down. I had to see where this author would take me next!

The main protagonist in this story is very likable from the start. You really feel for her. the author does a great job of making me care, as well as showing me this world of witches. She does so seamlessly. It's embedded into the story without me even knowing it.

If you like the mystical and the magical, pick up this book. I mean it. It is worth the time and money.

Quite A Witchy Tale! This was one enchanting book! Full of sadness, but also much joy and love. The end of the book includes some recipes! Winter is such a sweet character and you really want to see her curse lifted and for her to get the guy in every way possible by the ending. This is full of cheeky wit as well as those "Awe" moments. I loved the spells and the history that were presented. I liked the way the plot and the pace flowed. From start to finish, you won't want to put this spellbinding story down ♡♡♡♡ Ms. Wood certainly has a magical way with words and I'm excited to read more of her work!

Very original and engaging.

‘Winter’s Curse’ is a very original and engaging YA paranormal romance novel in which Winter must overcome not just one, but two curses, that stand between her and future happiness.

The story is well crafted, with some intriguing twists and turns and a few surprises along the way. Winter and her friends are likeable characters, while those who work against her are clearly intended to be disliked. The magical clans, their qualities and the social structures and rules by which they live are original and interesting, which adds another layer of complexity to the story and helps to drive the complications of the plot.

This is a book that reminds the reader that real friendship and true love transcend the boundaries of class, heritage or alliance that people try to put on them, and that it’s more important to choose what is right than to settle for what others might decide or impose.

Winter hooks you from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to see her in depth development. Also shows emotions and very discriptive throughout the book. Granny is a great character and that’s all I can say about her and be fair 😁 adventures that keep you up late into the night. Cannot wait for book two!! Great debut novel!

After I read the prologue, I had to read more of this story. April did a wonderful job describing the characters, and their surroundings. She made it feel as if I was there with Winter, Turmeric and their friends and community. This story kept my interest high and I had to read on.. Even as this book one came to an end, I yearned for more. So I immediately went to book two.

I love magic and this story is full with witches, oh the glee. Winter our protagonist is as different as they come... she has blue blood running through her veins , yes her blood is blue, not that she's a royal, and instead of her blood boiling and turning her skin red, when embarrassed, flushed or angry, her blood cools and turns her a blue shade, such a delight... there's more she sweats ice, cool, cool, cool? Cool. (couldn't resist)

Winter has been cursed and it's by her grandmother... okay that's not right... it's her grandmothers fault, her grandmother is the cause of Winter's greatest troubles and has to secretly try her best to break the curse, without her grandmother figuring it out.

She becomes friends with the least people her grandmother expects her to and together with her friends she goes on a journey to break her curse and uncover a whole load of secrets and make astounding discoveries.

There are so many intriguing aspects of this story, which makes it unique to most of the stories of witches I read, for one it makes use of the broomstick witches use to fly, the witches live in harmony with the humans? etc.The plot of this book is sensational but the execution of the story is mediocre, the story fell flat in a lot of places and the flow wasn't well paced, the story pace is all over, there is need for re-editing, because there were times I got confused, but it's mostly because of all the hocus pocus that come with witches.

I did not connect with Winter or any character, because there isn't' much depth to them, I was being told this is what the character does, and not shown exactly. I found Winter to be the most confusing character because of how much self doubt she has in herself, and how easy it is for her to fall into the damsel in distress role, and relying on Tumeric, how she let others walk-over her, girl you're a witch, embrace it and be the badass that you're meant to be. Her emotions aren't well portrayed, in fact emotions aren't well portrayed in the story, that most of the time, where they are needed, they are swept aside like a minority.

Aside from that, this story was enjoyable enough for me to finish it, because I was curious to find out why certain things were happening and I wasn't disappointed. There are so many questions that the story brings up that are left unanswered which was quite disheartening.

I love the concept of the story, it's quite an easy read, because it's not really dark and very surface read and the cover is very beautiful.

I've been excited about Aprils debut book for a while and it didn't disappoint. This is a stunning book that I absolutely didn't want to end. I laughed, I cried and I swooned while reading which are all signs of a great read for me. Winters Curse is unlike anything I've ever read before. It's a fresh, unique and beautiful story. This book is easily one of my favourite reads of the year and April is now an automatic 1-click author. I am looking forward the next book and the rest of this series. As I understand from the title and blurb of the next book we'll be learning about a new character which is absolutely my favourite kind of series! I couldn't be any more thrilled with how this book ended for Winter. I loved a number of the supporting characters and hope we'll get to know them better in the future books!

Winter's Curse focuses on the titular teenage witch, Winter Rose-Thorne. Her family has fled the witch hunters and she thinks she's found a safe haven... Then her grandmother, High Priestess Iris, bets Winter's future fertility, and loses. Now Winter's racing against time to reverse the curse, and keep her grandmother's ill-advised actions from ruining her life. Along the way she finds solace with Turmeric of the Wormwood Clan, but as her feelings for him grow, so does the age-old Segregation Curse that keeps the clans apart.

Winter's Curse is part mystery, part romance, and infinitely readable. It's the kind of story you want to gobble down in one sitting, then leisurely re-read so you can pick up all the magnificent details and nuances. Highly recommended.

WOW! What a unique world of Witches. I love Woods' descriptions and names of her characters.

"A thin layer of frost spreads across my skin." - Winter

" His long black hair hangs down his back like a gorgeous ebony curtain."

*Swoon*

" Tumeric Wormwood....Even his name sounds cool."

I loved everything about this book it was magical, captivating and well written. You can tell that Wood took her time with creating spells and lore of this magical world.

Winter's curse is a wonderful mixture of romance, magic, and tragedy. Highly recommended for anyone who loves witches, charmed, harry potter.

I absolutely loved Winters Curse! I felt like I really got to know each of the characters and their feelings as well. Surprising turns and unpredictable. I love how the story takes place modern day but with the ancient beliefs/rituals. It is an amazing book and I can not wait for the next one to come out!!!!

Disclaimer: The author sent me an E-COP of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Winter's Curse follows a young girl named — yes, you guessed it right — Winter in her journey traversing the perplexing reason as to why her grandmother used her fertility, or rather, her womb, as a bet in a broom flying contest.

April L. Wood really did an astounding job with her world of witches. I absolutely adored the idea between the segregation of witches into factions (or clan) and each having their own special ability they are a master of. I am also amazed by how Wood separated humans to witches. Normally, witches call humans "humans" despite being human themselves just because of their capability to call forth the power of nature and such, but in this book, they really are completely different from humans.

Character-wise, I didn't really connect with anyone. Although I did like Cassia and Willow for their happy-go-lucky attitude and their spontaneity for adventure. And let me add Priestess Clover who is a bubble of kindness, but  I wasn't particularly interested in the protagonist, Winter, and her love interest Turmeric. I think Winter is a powerful character, although she wasn't really clicking with me. As for Turmeric, I do not like him as a person at all. His kind of personality isn't really my thing.  Let me add as well that this book has a trigger warning for instalove.

Moreover, I think the concept of the book is brilliant, but the plot was, to me at least, bland. I felt weirded out by the fact that the main storyline followed Winter's fertility curse and wasn't discovered why until 75% into the book. It would have been a wise choice given that the reasoning was great, but it was trivial. Certain events, though, are particularly enticing. Making me want to read through them.

Overall, I think the book could have been more full with a better idea on the plot, but otherwise, I loved the concept of witches so much so that it led me to the end of the story.

This book is amazing. Winter, the main character, is adorable from the start. You really feel for her as her family is hunted and has to relocate from Antartica, or wherever their land of ice and snow was. Immediately, Winter is thrust into a new school with witches from other clans, which always seem to be in conflict with each other. Winter falls for a boy from a different clan and they're forbidden to be with each other and literally burn each other's lips when they kiss. Their relationship is truly heart-warming. I also liked how the author created these various clans and her own version of witchcraft, which is largely based on real witchcraft. It's urban fantasy, but it's also fantastic world building, just the same. I can't wait to read the second book in the series.

There are some good aspects to this story.
The world this book is set in is intriguing. Better, more thorough world building would improve the story a lot.
The plot is very interesting, and one I haven’t come across before. This is definitely a big plus. However, the pace is erratic and the story line is very confusing. The whole thing was flat.
The characters were one dimensional. They offered no chance for connection and most of the interactions between them were unbelievable.
There is definite potential here, but it would need a re-write/edit to bring it out.
I received a complimentary copy from VRO in return for an honest review.

If you're looking for a YA Fantasy with a new kind of Witch world, this is the book for you.

As someone who is not a fan of 1st Person, I have to say I like April's writing! You're engaged from the first page and immediately come to feel for Winter. That intensity is lost as we come to see the world Winter comes to call home, but she is pressed by her trials and tribulations.

I liked the book and I bought Book Two!
