Most of us take for granted the ability to pull open a door, get up from our couch, or pick up a dropped pen. But for Amy Chally, a thirty-four-year-old licensed social worker, with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy (CP), these simple tasks are a daily challenge.

Determined not to let her CP hinder her ability to live a more independent life, Amy has overcome obstacles wi

This heartfelt story of perseverance gives readers an inside look into Amy's life and inside her service dog Yazzen's life as well. The chapter from Yazzen's point of view reminded me of "The Art of Racing in the Rain." Being able to think like a dog, especially a service dog, is so fascinating and reading about the process through Yazzen's eyes was extremely engaging. Amy and Yazzen's bond was very apparent in this chapter and Amy's positive and bubbly personality shone throughout her writing a ...more

This is the inspirational, touching tale of Amy Chally, a woman with cerebral palsy, and her loyal service dog, Yazzen. Being a true dog lover I found it really interesting to learn about Canine Companions for Independace, and am ever amazed what dogs can be taught to help us. I was also inspired by Amy's courage and determination to live life fully despite limitations. A short, easy read, this book is designed with children in mind, but it's a great read for any age. ...more

What a fantastic, heartfelt, sweet story. I was really touched by the emotional honesty in this short story. Amy did a great job painting a picture of life with her service animal. As someone who works in the field which supports persons with developmental disabilities, I truly enjoyed reading from her perspective. (And the first part of the book, of course from a totally different perspective) ;)
Very well done, Amy!!
Keep writing... And I'll keep reading.

Amy Chally has made a good effort at telling her story of her companionship with her service dog. I was disappointed that it was so short (only 46 pages) and would have very much appreciated hearing in more detail, stories, humor, challenges, joys of her experience with her companion. Perhaps, she is working on a follow up, lengthier book.
I will say that this is a concise, easy read which may serve well as reading for children, perhaps 10-13 as an educational tool re: service animals.

I'm an accidental author with a passion for helping and educating others. I love writing, speaking, and spending time with my family and my Successor Service Dog Portland. Making Independence Happen, my first novella is a two-part memoir for 5th grader's on up, that I started writing back in 2012. Why? Well, like any author, I have a story to tell and I want to encourage anyone who has ever strugg ...more
